This song is incredibly moving - a superb performance by Laurel. I have to admit I have NO idea what she's singing about but the emotion in this song amkes me shed a tear every time I hear it!

Laurel's 'tour de force'. This clip is more than 30 years old. I wonder if she still performs it. I love the aching oo-ooh that comes in the third line of the second run through the chorus. Where do the lyrics say that? The way it builds is just spine-tingling. Quelle chanson! Quelle chanteuse! Magnifique, ma cherie.
Love the way the song 3:38s gathers pace to reach that magnificent crescendo just like ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All... (lyrics/song section) "But you see...The winner takes it all" etc. Laurel Masse creates a performance of astounding brilliance and absolute mastery of her chosen art. Some singers are not just born, they are sent from heaven!!!!
Saw this or a very similar performance in August 1978. It was shown on BBC, I am sure. Went out and bought Pastiche (the album), which is fab from start to finish. This song is incredible and performed to perfection.
Totally agree with you This song is from a French singer composer Michel Jonas I loved it by Jonas but but with Laurel Masse it is fabulous I also have the dvd Pastiche and still listen to it Those artists are so talented they also sing another French song "Malaise en Malaisie" from Alain Chamfort and Serge Gainsbourg very nicely
I had never seen Laurel sing this until now. Thanks so much for putting it up here. The song and her voice are both wonderful. If you love the song, you need to have it translated to fully get it's power and sad sad story.
Wow! Laurel Masse is just fabulous with her pitch and diction - is she French, or French Canadian? She just absolutely nailed the French in this song!! Ms. Masse: congratulations on your work at Yale, and also on the new, smaller apartment! Blessings, Bernie
I made a n agreement with some mates a few weeks ago to produce my definitive list for desert island discs ( a programme where you initially name your top eight songs/tracks to take to an island) This was one of them; it reminds me of when my partner and I were separated for a few months because of visa restrictions. That was 25 years ago and we are still togeteher in the same country. Love this song!
Hi, emgasu. This was recorded before the accident. After it, I had such serious injuries from which to recover, that I needed to leave the group. About the mouth - there aren't a lot of wide-open vowel sounds in French, so no wide-open mouth was needed. No one has asked that before - you are very observant! Blessings, Laurel
Franchement : amazing peformance! i am not good enough in english to say how much you captured the feeling of this song. But be proud. it was very, very good...
I bought 'Pastiche " many years ago and have always loved it. I hope you read this Laurel as I still and always will love Manhattan Transfer... and i love you too, Thanks for the memories.
@@MrFrampo56 Exactly like me! I bought Pastiche, fell in love with Manhattan Transfer and was enchanted by this song - I hope that Laurel Massé can read these lines, with admiration from Italy

the drama of this is great, even with a few flat pitched notes from Laurel. She sells it theatrically, which is more important than a few clams most wouldn't hear except someone like me, whose wife is a vocal instructor and music teacher. I would hear her teaching in the other room and over time it caused certain things, even minor glitches to leap out at me.
My house mate (and landlady) had bought The Manhattan LP Pastiche mistaking it for the Woody Allen Film Soundtrack of the Film of the same name (!!! These things happened in '70s London). At the same time a 2 year Engagement to be married I had made was breaking up! - I wore this track out as it 'captured my feelings' For me it revived passion like Piaf - which coming from a Welshman is no small compliment. Should be in anyone's "break up" list
Laurel performs it live on the Transfer Live CD re-issue, but it's badly distorted like most of the CD, so avoid it. She's stunning and arresting (est-ce que le meme chose?)- her interpretation evokes the Quebec chanteuse Fabienne Thibault (vocal range) and the French cabaret star Charles Aznavour (dramatic intensity).

I just watched this amazing vidéo. About the meaning of this song, it’s quite difficult to translate it, just keep in mind the phonetic works very fine. Redhead sings it incredibly well, and her french interpretation is near perfection. Hopefully, she keeps a thin part of her native american accent, so sexy ...I don’t think she’s a french canadian. The story told, originally sang by a male singer, talks about « I ‘m waiting for you », with the feeling that you won’t come back ... She sing’s it with a hint of madness a female in love should do.

I wanted to tell you that I am waiting. it doesn't matte if I lose my time. I am waiting for you, I am waiting all the time, Tonight, tomorrow, anytime. like someone who has none anymore sleeping near his phone And who seeks you when he wake up Alone in the sun, I am waiting.
No words to describe. A masterpiece of the '70s...

The first time I saw this song performed I was blown away - still am so many decades later! Laurel Masse is utterly unique in beauty and voice.

She took on so many songs so difficult most singers would just run away from them screaming in fear

"Sell my heart three francs fifty"
"Vendez mon cœur trois francs cinquante"
You knew how to listen to it so well
Tu savais si bien l'écouter
That my life has stopped
Que ma vie s'est arrêtée
When you left me
Quand tu m'as quitté
I wanted to tell you that I'm waiting for you
And too bad if I waste my time
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for you all the time
Without getting discouraged though
Sans me décourager pourtant
Like someone who has no one left
Falls asleep next to his phone
S'endort près de son téléphone
And smiles when we wake him up
Et sourit quand on le réveille
But it was only the sun
Mais ce n'était que le soleil
The other day I saw someone who looks like you
And the street was like a shaking picture
If it's you who passes the day I walk
If it's really you, I already see the scene
I look at you
Moi je te regarde
And you look at me
Et tu me regardes
I wanted to tell you that I'm waiting for you
And too bad if I waste my time
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for you all the time
Tonight, tomorrow, anytime
Ce soir, demain, n'importe quand
Like someone who has no one left
Falls asleep next to his phone
S'endort près de son téléphone
And who looks for you when he wakes up
Et qui te cherche à son réveil
All alone in the sun, I wait
Tout seul au soleil, j'attends
I wanted to tell you that I'm waiting for you
If you knew how I wait for you
Si tu savais comme je t'attends
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for you all the time
When will you be there?
Quand seras-tu là?
I am waiting for you
Je t'attends
I wanted to tell you that I'm waiting for you
If you knew how I wait for you
Si tu savais comme je t'attends
I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting for you all the time
I wanted to tell you that I'm waiting for you
Quand tu m'as quitté

What has loving the Beatles have to do with hating Manhattan Transfer?! I love both bands. Ringo Starr also played drums with them once.
@@dariowestern yes ringo starr was a drummer during the recording of their album "coming out" in 1976

I wanted to tell you that I am waiting.
it doesn't matter if I lose my time.
I am waiting for you, I am waiting for you all the time
Without discourage me yet.
like someone who has none anymore
sleeping near his phone,
And he smile when he's waked
But it was only the Sun

I will put my heart in aluminum foil,
My phone number to the absent subscribers .
My love songs will remain there in my piano,
I threw the piano key in the water.
I will go to see the kings of the antique market.
Sell my heart three fifty francs.
You knew listening so well,
that my life has stopped
When you left me
I wanted to tell you that I am waiting.
it doesn't matte if I lose my time.
I am waiting for you, I am waiting all the time,
Tonight, tomorrow, anytime.
like someone who has none anymore
sleeping near his phone
And who seeks you when he wake up
Alone in the sun, I am waiting.
Merci, ramserge!
The other day I saw someone who looks like you
And the street was like a trembling photo
If you are passing the day where I take a walk,
If it's really you, I can already see the scene.
I look at you
And you look at me
I just watched this amazing vidéo.
