I lived in Detroit when Sandy came out with this song and it was a big hit in Detroit and Canada across the River. She wasn't known in much of the rest of the U.S. market but in our area we appreciated her version of this song. Detroit area people heard her because of CKLW radio out of Windsor Ontario Canada a 50,000 Watt blowtorch station played her song in it's regular rotation.Even people as far down as Louisville Kentucky with good radio receivers could pick up CKLW in the daytime and after dark you could get it as far down as the Florida Keys.So Sandy was aided by that. Her next song ,Girl Don't Come ,was also well played in the Detroit area.

I must have lived in one of those areas of the U.S. that seldom played her version of this song. The only one I heard by her played on the radio was “Girl Don’t Come”. Dionne Warwick’s version was the one I heard.

On November 20, 1964 there was a tragic aircraft accident in Sweden when the flight LN277 from Linjeflyg crashed at landing in Ängelholm. On the radio they played this song just before the news about the accident was announced, so for me there is always something there to remind me when I hear this wonderful song sung by Sandie Shaw...

It’s odd…as much as I listened to the radio in my teens in the ‘60s, I can’t say that I remember Sandie’s version. Hearing it now, it’s like hearing it for the first time. I’m not saying it wasn’t played on the radio stations I listened to, but it couldn’t have been much. The version I remember is Dionne Warwick’s. Sandie’s certainly deserved to have been played more often by the stations in our area, meaning Eastern North Carolina. The ONLY song I remember by her was “Girl Don’t Come”, although I know she must have had other hits.

As I was searching for the version I knew I read on Wikipedia that this song didn't fare too well in the Billboard top 100 for many years.
Here in Canada Shaw's version hit #1. THIS is the only version I'm familiar with.
    Thanks for sharing it.

@@mottledbrain I heard the naked eyes version and I thought I had heard this before. Your heart remembers songs so I looked it up. I like Sandie's, version, it's pure. The 1983 naked eyes cover version is too full of unnecessary sounds taking away from his voice. His voice is the smoothest.

@@mottledbrain Naked Eyes is a band that had a smash hit version of this song in the 1980s. It's one of those iconic retro 80s new wave synthpop songs like "I Ran So Far Away" or "Don't You Want Me Baby" or "Tainted Love" or "Sweet Dreams"
Where was I in the 60s? Not even a dream yet. Mom was born in 53. I was born in 84. However, I grew up listening to a lot of 60s hit songs on the oldies radio station, and I never heard this version in the USA before today.

Despite her huge success, still massively underated and one of the few genuine rock singers, thats how I classify her rather than pop , country or tourch. Its the awesome powerful female voice, plus the fact she leads from the front rather the guitar having the primary or equal prominence. and of course she was a hell raiser, par excellent.

Beautiful song by a beautiful woman. One of my favorite Bacharach/David pieces.
I also think it's amazing how the flute player perfectly mimics a trombone. You don't see that kind of talent these days.

This is one of those “OUR SONG” I heard this a good few years ago whilst out on one of our regular Friday nights out with my ex partner in our local pub. He was in my life for 10+ years even though being in a relationship didn’t work for us we did become closer afterwards and we still always listened to this. He even wanted it on a music playlist I set up for him as he never understood technology very well to do this himself. He passed away rather unexpectedly last month and because of Covid rules and next of kin protocols wasn’t able to see him before he went into eternal sleep. What I’m trying to say regardless of how old this song maybe it will forever be timeless due to the words and its meaning to me. He was 20yr senior to me so there was a couple of differences in music likes, 😉🙃 making this song even more poignant. We both loved it and for the exact same reason 🙏🥰
