Now it’s all payola. Artist pay to vote. Artist pay to be nominated. Artist pay for seats to go. Artists pay for everything from a paper slip saying they participated in th4 song and the actual award.
Whoever taped this onto a vhs tape did the music world a huge favour. This deserves to be digitally enhanced as much as possible (hopefully 1080) for it is an iconic moment in Grammy history.
I saw them last night, and they talked about this, and how during rehearsal, they watched in awe as Ella scatted just as flawlessly. She ended, looked at them, and asked, “was that okay?” “She momentarily forgot she was Ella Fitzgerald.”
There will never be another Ella. God only puts talent like hers once in a generation. And she was accompanied by an extraordinary group, Manhattan Transfer. What a combo and the audience truly appreciated this mini concert. I got to see Ella in concert a number of times in LA and Vegas. She was even better if you can imagine.
How lucky can one person be that you can say that you performed with somebody like Ella Fitzgerald, much less multiple people? That’s gotta be amazing. My mom saw the First Lady of Song live at the Wolf Trap sometime during her college years, and has still said that it was one of the best live performances she had ever seen.
Ella is coming up on 70 here and can still out sing, out scat anybody in the house here! I was lucky enough to have seen her live twice, in 1978 and 1985 - I will never, ever forget it. She will, never, EVER be replaced - no one comes within a light year of her. God Bless You Ella, for the music, the joy your records STILL bring to us!
I watched this magical moment as it happened , & My heart was pounding ! Lady Ella & TMT ! It was one of THE forever & ever highlights of The Grammy's . Ella was not feeling well, almost cancelled, showed up in time to do a quick run through, & then, just like the pro's all 5 were /are, they knocked it out of the park ! What a moment . --------MJL< 76 y/o
I remember seeing the original broadcast of this, and I literally stood up and clapped at my TV when I saw the Transfer and her together here and that was before they sang a note because I knew it would be PERFECT. Then I thought so, the best performance of the Grammys was at the presentation of another award" - just incredible. I only wish Ella had simply sang instead of the scatting because when she just sings straight it absolutely awes me. There should NEVER be any doubt who the First Lady of Song is.
It's my hope that many people watching this on TV are now in tune with what real music is all about, and the talent that brought it about. Ella and Manhattan Transfer.
Ladies and gentlemen it does not get any better than this. Ella should have dropped the mic. This performance was in her later years, you would never know. No words can express how genius she was. I wish I could have seen her live. RIP QUEEN! No one has ever come close
Tremendous performance!!! I saw Ella Fitzgerald live at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta years ago. She signed my playbill after the show. Where was my camera? Ugh! I also saw The Manhattan Transfer live as well, and it was a wonderful evening of really good music 🎶. G!
The note Ella sings at 1:39 it just burst open my heart, exactly what artists r supposed to do, move you with E-motion, but few achieve the degree of mastery and the talent to do so. God Bless whoever made this available, and live!!!! Really somewhere there is music!!! wherever these ppl played!!!
OMG!!!! My favorite SINGERS OF ALL TIME!!!....TOGETHER ON ONE MIC!!!! My favorite Group and Favorite vocalist.....This is a dream.... I love Ella and The Manhattan transfer
Never seen this before but love Ella & saw Man Tran twice in the 70’s at the London Palladium theatre, fabulous live concerts. Still listen to their music & Ella.
It must be really something to be beloved by so many admirers all over the world at the singular and rare talent of this lady. God bless her! Her modesty and shyness makes her even more loved. Ella embodied all of music. She was music personified. She looks like a typical older lady here anyone could see at any given place. But the moment she opens her mouth and literally NOSEDIVES in the throws of the rhythm and the music, she immediately causes a sensation just with the scatting alone. She hasn't even really "sang" here. She was just so unique, so very special, and she had a voice that nobody could match. Her voice was deemed the voice of America back then..........the First Lady of Song. Can you imagine a black woman earning such a title like that back when race relations was at its absolute worse?! She was truly the best there ever was. And there are just so many singers that I truly like and admire. But Ella was an entire different ballgame. I mean she left everybody in the dust without even trying as a singer. Period. And I have always loved her personality, her grace, her inner beauty. You know when God brings gifts, He doesn't half-step. We are so fortunate to have been graced by everything she brought.
Where, oh where, oh where, is the Kennedy Center Honors for The Manhattan Transfer? The premier jazz vocal group of the U.S. for over 50 years… They should have been honored 10 years ago!!!
Ella ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ in awe of her..........her improvisation was spot on every time - never missed a note.......and it was from a place where only someone truly let themselves go.......that’s jazz!!!.......Manhattan Transfer are the greatest vocal period 🔥🔥🔥🔥 wonderful collaboration
Ella seems so modest, but you can see in her eyes she's thinking, it's all quite cute your a capella singing, but within one minute I'll show who is the boss here and I will totally rip you guys apart and no I will not take hostages.
Wow! Just Wow! The greatest singer of the 20th century, and maybe EVER - with my all time favorite harmony group - doing a fantastic classic arrangement. What year was this? - it was the 25th Grammy awards, apparently. I think I caught a glimpse of Rick James in the front row?
Live, people. They did that LIVE.
With no autotune.
Legends🎉❤
Much deserved standing ovation for Ella Fitzgerald 👏🏽🙏🏾🕊️
See, this is when the Grammys was the damn Grammys 🎶💜
Now it’s all payola. Artist pay to vote. Artist pay to be nominated. Artist pay for seats to go. Artists pay for everything from a paper slip saying they participated in th4 song and the actual award.
This level of class needs to make a comeback soon.
Now, that's some high class singing. I love both Ella and The Manhattan Transfer
No auto tune, pure vocals!
Ella makes it seem absolutely effortless!
Whoever taped this onto a vhs tape did the music world a huge favour. This deserves to be digitally enhanced as much as possible (hopefully 1080) for it is an iconic moment in Grammy history.
What a great ovation for "The First Lady of Song"!
I think that The Manhattan Transfer were in Heaven for a moment. They look absolutely enchanted to share a stage with the legend Ella.
And love that they stepped to the side and applauded her with the rest of the audience. Beautiful performance 👏
It's normal who will not be ?
I saw them last night, and they talked about this, and how during rehearsal, they watched in awe as Ella scatted just as flawlessly. She ended, looked at them, and asked, “was that okay?”
“She momentarily forgot she was Ella Fitzgerald.”
Correct❤❤
Back when Hollywood was class. Not ASS.
Imagine?! Ella Fitzgerald and The Manhattan Transfer singing together. That is like dying and going to musical heaven!
Look at all the talent on that stage! The greatest female singer of all time, Miss Fitzgerald! Janice Seagal is great too.
Folks ! THIS is Class--------the likes of which, we'll not see or hear, ever again.
Just Great!
Oh that was sweet! She has such a good ear. They were great together!
What a performance of my favorite artist and favorite group.
Ella is coming up on 70 here and can still out sing, out scat anybody in the house here! I was lucky enough to have seen her live twice, in 1978 and 1985 - I will never, ever forget it. I must have seen you at those concerts! Couldn't have expressed my appreciation of Ella better.
So lucky to have seen her!
Well I guess you have a memory to share with us about a great wonderful person and singer !!!! CONGRATS !!!
How you possibly know that ?
This deserves 1 million likes minimum!
Look at that audience on their feet before Ella Fitzgerald even sang a note! That's how much she was revered!
No-one scats like ELLA ..MAGICAL

No one can outdo Ella. She’s a gem. RIP Ella ❤️
I'm sure I'm not the only one who wondered if we'd hear any of her iconic lines from the Live In Berlin recording.
This is why I love TH-cam rabbit holes. I never knew this moment existed, yet it came up just two clicks from a video I was actually looking for.
That's when award shows blew your mind🦅RIP Mr Hauser and Ms Fitzgerald
Ella truely was a gift to this world
Her voice still sounds as beautiful as it did in the 1930's! Hasn't aged a bit. LOVE HER!!
The late, great Ella Fitzgerald and Tim Hauser must be making a lot of angels joyous with their singing.
Why did I. yell at Luther Vandross to stand his ass up and clap for the legend before he became one later?? 😂 The incomparable ELLA!
I know someone who always says "I don't get why Ella Fitzgerald is such a big deal."
Some people just NEVER get it!
Awe, you should by that person a hearing aide and a beginners book on music
And I mean NEVER!!!
I think that "someone" is the only one to say such things. Never heard that in my life from anyone. Ella gets all the respect.
That person isn’t worth mentioning and they must be on the worst dope known to crackheads!!!
Yeah I'm sure that isn't the only thing they "don't get".
Ella!
The Manhattan Transfer!
Who could ask for anything more !!!
I remember seeing the original broadcast of this, and I literally stood up and clapped at my TV when I saw the Transfer and her together here and that was before they sang a note because I knew it would be PERFECT. Ella fitzgerald is music. She mastered the art of improvisation with an accompanying band. An American Master.

OMG!!!! My favorite SINGERS OF ALL TIME!!!....TOGETHER ON ONE MIC!!!! My favorite Group and Favorite vocalist.....This is a dream.... I love Ella and The Manhattan transfer
I read somewhere that musicians in her band would tune their instruments to her Ella Fitzgerald's voice. This vocal performance was great!
Oh wow I remember staying up for this when I was a kid. R.I.P. Tim!
Never seen this before but love Ella & saw Man Tran twice in the 70’s at the London Palladium theatre, fabulous live concerts. Still listen to their music & Ella.
