Chorus blows me away every time. The layers sync perfectly. I saw them in the middle of promoting Offbeat and their upcoming Christmas Album (the 1st one). Fun concert. They harmonize like the rest of us breathe.
I was in high school when I heard this song. It was so shocking that I listened to it every day. I listened to this song so much that I wore out the tape. But I was glad I did. I can search for this song again in this 2024 year and listen to it many times on youtube. And this time it won't wear out. I really like this song. Manhattan Transfer is a great group.
This is the kind of music only The Transfer themselves--primarily Cheryl on this one--could write & sing. Not only do they sing in harmony, but OMG, this is so complex! Awesome, simply awesome. I saw them do this on this tour, '93, & in person it's more amazing. RIP, Tim Hauser. We Miss you. Wolfsky9
+Wolfsky9 I absolutely agree. The skills they provide for this are amazing. When the CD was first released, I purchased it and played this song over and over. I was mesmerized. I love the video, too. :) Very creative in having them play different characters. It must have been great for you to see them perform this live. I wish I would have had the chance to hear the entire group, though I hope to someday hear the remaining three. I just learned this morning that Tim Hauser had passed away. I was in the mood for TMT and decided to watch the video for "So, You Say" and look up some information and tour dates, and saw that he'd passed away in 2014. He will be greatly missed by many.
I have been a big fan of the Transfers since the late 70's when I first started seeing them on TV variety shows. Their unique vocal harmonies and the sheer range of their timeless jazz/pop hits are phenomenal. This is yet another of the countless songs by them that I love, and the music video is one of their best. It was terribly sad when they lost Tim Hauser, but being the outstanding professionals they are, The Manhattan Transfer lives on.
I was searching for that song fir more than 20 years! Once heard on the radio, and DJ did not say the song's name, just informed it was Manhattan Transfer. Finally I am here. Thank God and TH-cam.
Good thing I learned immediately 25 years ago when I heard this on the radio that the name is "Beat of Avenues" (that's how I memorized it, even though it is "The Offbeat of Avenues". Otherwise it would drive me crazy not knowing what's this jewel is.
Absolutely awesome. I’ve had this song since 1991 and it still hits me. Now that I’ve seen the video for the first time I’m even more amazed. Then again if I had seen the video earlier I would have dropped out of school to take up my full time job as a stalker of all things Manhattan Transfer! Thank you for the video.
Hard to believe this is 20 years ago (as of this writing). Cheryl is fanTAStic in this. Singing harmony is one of the most intimate of human connections.
@monicavpires -- The lyrics include a ton of vintage "jive" slang spoken by (mostly African-American) jazz and swing musicians of the 1930's and 1940's such as Cab Calloway. As an example, "help me, he blew his wig...he plays gutbucket doghouse, dig" means "the guy is almost crazy with excitement...he plays some low-down music on that upright base, understand!"
And what are they really singing when I think I hear some part about Peter Gabriel's canary's frame? Can hardly understand a word of it but when I hear this song I can't get it out of my head. It gets a 10+ on my earworm-o-meter.
This song brings back some memories. I heard it on vh1 or some music video channel and rushed out to buy the cd. I played the hell out of it. MT is one of if not the best jazz harmony groups out there. Gold standard for the up and comers. This song is definitely a showcase song. It shows off each individual’s range and how they blend together. S-tier arrangement and vocals. Tim’s laugh I’m the middle is priceless.
As a HUGE Take 6 fan I have to acknowledge them. I cant w/o all due respect say that Before the "6" There was the "4" (doing this kind of Vocal innovation in the 70's) - And that 4 Is the Manhattan Transfer. You can imagine my ELATION when I researched that one of the Tracks on the Offbeat of Avenues was written and arranged by ... Mervyn Warren (formally of Take 6) called "Confide in me" As a die hard T6 fan I could tell when MT did some of their scat parts, that it was MW ;)
Big blues in the city, Trailin' the main stroll (a kitty) Cup o' joe, get witty. At Deuce's Cafe, it's the mostest hideaway (Mez muggles "Flip Zooty Flim Plant you now solid, dig you later Slim") First you crawl then you walk, scat then you talk Hear the cool, feel the heat of the Rhythm of the offbeat of avenues
I never heard of this group until recently re-watching the series home improvement, (They're a bit before my time, I'm 31) they were on a christmas episode doing santa clause is coming to town. Now I'm NOT a fan of christmas music nor did I particularly like their version of that song but something made me really want to look up more of this group and I'm glad I did. I did not expect to find something as unique and intricate as this.
I remember where I was when I first heard this album. We were on a summer trip, probably in 91 or 92 and vacationing in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Always gives me the feels whenever I listen to it.
What Harmony of sweet and great voices...Surprising and Astonishing MANHATTAN TRANSFER.In their musical field, they remain the best for me.As the saying goes "if they did not exist, they would have to invent them." Without them, it would miss to JAZZ, this little something of genius and madness that propels us a little further, beyond the notes of a beautiful composition.
I used to listen them when ı was 12 around ... they on tv in TURKEY ❤😘👏👍 Very happy to see them again now ı am 42 🤗 very emotional 😥love from istanbul TURKEY
First time I listened to this song, I was 8 and living in TR. Completely different culture and time, and even then I was completely hooked. My dad was baffled at that :)
And somebody said that was one of your Greatest Albums they put out let me say this all their music is jamming. One of the greatest Jazz groups in my time but of course I'm a native New Yorker
Hi all. I have to say that you people are by far the absolute BEST BAND I ever had the pleasure of listening to and grooving to melodically and personally. You have brought sooooo much joy to my life and heart you cannot imagine. I had the pleasure of seeing but once at the open air theatre in Vancouver B. C. At Expo 86. Thank you for all of your years of musicality. Hopefully one day I'll get to see you again. You opened my eyes to your style of jazz and Wow!!! Thank you
It's so upsetting how little this music is cared for in our society... This is definitely not giving me a headache like the WUB WUB of teenage pop (even though I unwillingly admit I am one)! I really must get this music out to our generation.
This album has been my ‘album for life’ and I absolutely adore it, everything about it. If you are reading this guys - thank you so so much. You’re all stars!
Hard to pinpoint one with TMT, but this has got to be my favorite of their music videos. The styling, the direction, their performance, and the narrative are perfect! Pure gold all around.
on a family vacation to LA one year with my brother, sister, and brother in law, my brother drove and he had a couple of mix tapes that he played the entire 9 hour drive---more then 10 years later and still remember this song :D
I never knew the name of this song. In the early 90's, this came out on vh1 and I was able to record it on video tape. The only thing was, that I only got the last two and a half minutes and the name did not appear on the video. Thanks much for posting this, it's a great song with great vocals.
This album came out after a *7* Year Hiatus from Recording /Touring (I remember an interview with them and thats how they announced them before the interview) RIP to the founder of TMT :'( Timothy DuPron Hauser (December 12, 1941 - October 16, 2014)
I heard this song 32 years ago and never again since then. It’s always stuck with me and I finally put in the right google clues to find it. Yay!
Oh my gosh, me too! Heard it once many years ago, and never forgot it. Finally i found it today. Yay Part 2!
Anche io stessa cosa!!!❤
YAY!!
This HAD to be composed in a dream.
So right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These groovy cats can blow with style, sass and sophistication!
Chorus blows me away every time. The layers sync perfectly. I saw them in the middle of promoting Offbeat and their upcoming Christmas Album (the 1st one). Fun concert. They harmonize like the rest of us breathe.
As a Korean, I love this group so much
But, Korean, you against of Russia? Americans?
One of my favorites. RIP Tim Hauser. A true Master.
I had no idea he passed.
@@TheWORstFan same here my dear friend
This is how I discovered The Manhattan Transfer as a teenager in the very early 1990s - I’ve been a fan ever since - and this album is AMAZING!!😊
I remember the first time I heard this song. I put it on repeat for two solid weeks until I could sing every part. Amazing song still.
I was in high school when I heard this song. It was so shocking that I listened to it every day. I listened to this song so much that I wore out the tape. But I was glad I did. Know the feeling, I have taken occasional "sojourns" away from "life" to stalk all things T.M.T. It's like an occasional binge on a very good drug.
Master piece.
The song.
The vocals
The video
❤❤❤❤
Это несомненно ШЕДЕВР !!!
Each voice unique as individuals and together the most perfect harmony.
Cheryl Blew me a kiss (yes, it was to me!) at Irvine Meadows, Damn I love this Group! RIP Tim.
I just love this group! Their voices are always perfection.

это не песня, а вынос мозга! уникальное, ни на что не похожее творение!

I'll cut to the chase... This whole album is outstanding!!!
Yes it is outstanding and for many years AllMusic gave it a pathetic two-star rating! I don't know if they still have it rated so low.
Remember seeing this video on MTV in 10th grade. This song is unforgettable (in a good way)!

One of my fave songs ever, and I've never seen this video! HOW? OMG love....
There are so many sub-plots in this video that every time I watch it, I discover something new. I love this song. One of my favorites.
One of the greatest songs of the 90s
The one shared me this song, I may have no chance to see him again. Everytime I hear The Offbeat of Avenues it's hurt me much!
This and Vocalese are my favorite recordings. Can't get enough!
I've watched this vid a gazillion times, and NEVER tire of it.
There music ages like a fine wine. They are always at the top of there game.
I love Manhattan transfer. My favorite group
Love this song...this was probably their "Best" album!!!
At my school's choir performance one group sang this and I've been obsessed with the song ever since
That's so cool!
шикарная вещь! потрясающие голоса и саунд! великолепно!
Они лучшие,это фантастика!!!
I never heard of this group until recently re-watching the series home improvement, (They're a bit before my time, I'm 31) they were on a christmas episode doing santa clause is coming to town. Great lightning and photography. Had not heard this song b4 but I really like it. Janis and Cheryl are beautiful here.
one of my Transfer favorites!
Devastated! Tim, you will be missed! R.I.P.
Love the sax in the beginning!

Çok sevdiğim Manhattan transfer türkülerinden
another great one from the decade when music was music, not crap songs like these days.
The music is crap because money over courage to work, plus laziness
Fantasy music M. Transfer one of the most quartet in the Earth...
Yes, this was prime VH-1 material at that time. I just looked at that channel's schedule of shows. Goodness, what a difference.
This one has haunted me since the first time I heard it. One of my favorite songs ever and my very favorite music video ever. 💞💞💞
This was the first CD I ever got as a kid. (Christmas gift to go with my new CD player). Brings back awesome memories.
These guys are amazing- been light years ahead of their genre for decades. I could just blow away the whole day listening....
I used to listen them when ı was 12 around ... they on tv in TURKEY ❤😘👏👍 Very happy to see them again now ı am 42 🤗 very emotional 😥love from istanbul TURKEY
Searching for this song for years. Thanks TH-cam
Красиво, легко, изящно, стильно!
Absolute masterpiece
Masterpiece of modern music
Really huge artists, really a masterpiece
First time I listened to this song, I was 8 and living in TR. Completely different culture and time, and even then I was completely hooked. My dad was baffled at that :)
I love this song since I was a teenager and it's awesome to listen to this song again. So classic
Brilliant song, brilliant performance (as usual), and magnificent video.
Brutal...maravilloso...
Just remember this music video, back then, I was so amazed with the vocal harmonization in this song...
How come some people don’t like it? Can’t understand it. Brilliant!
WOW. So unique, so fresh sounding and so damn clever
And somebody said that was one of your Greatest Albums they put out let me say this all their music is jamming. One of the greatest Jazz groups in my time but of course I'm a native New Yorker
