I've rarely seen Manhatten Transfer deliver a lacklustre performance...they are passionate vocalists and dedicated to their craft and you can instantly tell that they love to sing...cool cats :)
This was the sond my lifelong girlfriend and I shared as our theme song. We blasted it on the car stereo all the way to the disco, every Friday and Saturday night. I miss you Beanie. You'll never be forgotten.
love this song....miss this kinds of songs and performers....my friend use to call it our national anthem coz we always listen to it....BIRDLAND....OPERATOR....YOU MAKE ME SMILE AGAIN...ah memories of my teenage years....love the 80's.....
I saw them live when they were on tour many years ago in New Orleans. Their stage show was great! They ended with an a capella version of "Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" that was nothing short of incredible.
I heard this song on 107.9 FM CJNU radio earlier this morning for the first time in quite a while & here I used to think this group were black singers. Oh how so very wrong I was after all these years. I probably seen them on TV years ago, but I just can't remember. The main singer is so georgeous as is the back up singer as well & I know there's an older version of this song & both are good, but the lead singing lady on this group is something else. This is the 1st time seeing them on TH-cam.
They always seemed to have fun performing. They put up a great show, singing great songs. Who cares about the outfits? In 20 years whatever looks soooo fashionable now will look like crap, but good music is immortal
I just realized this was over 30 yrs ago, how depressing. MT is one of the all-timers of vocal groups of course, and this was a fun dip into the pop world.
the MT hit #7 in Billboard, 8-8-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! One of my high school teachers, Connie Relias, looked somewhat like Janis Siegel, the lead singer.
I have to do this for this one group I am in (The best group of singing at the school) We will be preforming in Washington D.C. in March 2012I hope I dont mess up for the altos!!!!
Hit #4 AC, #7 pop in Billboard. The lead singer, Janis Siegel, always looked like 1 of my high school teachers, Connie Relias. Connie, if you're out there, giive me a shout. God bless!
Janis in gauchos.......Cheryl in a long black dress, a young jazz players dream dates in the late 70's early 80's....LOL still love these guys 30 years later, great shows even today.
A dying if not dead art form of Harmony style group music that started in the 50's, Motown took it to another Universe and it started dying off in the 80's....Very few left. What a shame.
'Just loved Janis Siegel's vocals and her stage style... what an entertainer...!!
RIP Tim Hauser. Thanks for the great music.
They always looked like they were having fun together when they performed. Just one of the things that made them so enjoyable.
the ganja mon
i have a rock n roll hall of fame walls of pictures.....THIS is one of them. sometimes you just need a little something different.
Janis was my favorite. Very underrated vocalist.
The Manhattan Transfer - the greatest singing group ever - can do a variety of singing styles so easily.
Great version of a great song. Love to watch the dance routine of the backups, esp. Cheryl!
I enjoyed their concert in Copenhagen in 1981. Loved them ever since - and a bit before.
Loved them forever and finally got to see them in person 6 years ago. Rest in Peace Tim Hauser.
I think this group is the most amazing vocal group in history
another one called "the Singer Unlimited" was great too but Manhattan Transfer was the best
I saw them in London last year on their Farewell World Tour. They do have an amazing body of work

What a great song.....I had this on 45 LP in 1981
I saw them live at Radio City, front row ticks i think 1979. They ROCKED!!
it was 1979 - I saw them too - I think the opening number was Birdland - they rose up on the stage elevator

Man, if you are not giving that performance a standing ovation, you are half comatose.
When the camera pans the audience at the end, there’s a couple in the front row that are too cool to clap. 😂😂
omg 12 years to nice arrive to this place.
Ils sont merveilleux

Two songs that I remember from my childhood because they were everywhere: This song and Elvira by the Oak Ridge Boys. What weird times the 80's were.
They always seemed to have fun performing. They put up a great show, singing great songs. Who cares about the outfits? In 20 years whatever looks soooo fashionable now will look like crap, but good music is immortal

Wonderful when artists go on TV and don't lip synch!
Rare.
Or use autotune!

I wonder if this kind of music will ever be popular again?
A dying if not dead art form of Harmony style group music that started in the 50's, Motown took it to another Universe and it started dying off in the 80's....Very few left.
What a shame.
