They always seemed to have fun performing. They put up a great show, singing great songs. Who cares about the outfits? In 20 years whatever looks soooo fashionable now will look like crap, but good music is immortal
I've rarely seen Manhatten Transfer deliver a lacklustre performance...they are passionate vocalists and dedicated to their craft and you can instantly tell that they love to sing...cool cats :)
A time for great vocal groups, Manhattan Transfer and the Pointer Sisters. Incomparable. Save your criticism of the 80's style. It was a style, and I actually prefer it to some of the sluts I see singing today. And that includes the men always clutching their balls.
@Melody Sanger: That is why I came to this video. I was researching Tim's ex-wife, Lori Lethin, and I learned he was a member of this fabulous group from back in the day. I had forgotten about them, but they do sound GOOD! Yes, rest in peace to Tim.
This was the sond my lifelong girlfriend and I shared as our theme song. We blasted it on the car stereo all the way to the disco, every Friday and Saturday night. I miss you Beanie. You'll never be forgotten.
ClassicRocker61 Thats all I think about when I hear this song. Jimmy The "Boogie Woogie" Man Valiant's entrance in the NWA. With his crazy yellow and black tights and yellow bandana.
Fridays used to be the poor substitute for SNL. Now after seeing recent SNL shows, those old Fridays episodes look better. Did they get better, were they better than I remember, or is SNL just a lot worse than it used to be? Also, this is a great old song, and the main singer is/was a cutie.
Fridays was an acquired taste and the humor was a little more offbeat (remember Kenny, the hunchback monster mime?), but I loved Fridays. I also preferred SCTV to SNL.

39 years later and these amazing guys are still touring! Check out their recent shows with a full orchestra here: th-cam.com/video/t4qrN7MJzIM/w-d-xo.html :)
I wonder if this group was ever aware how popular this song was in mid Atlantic championship wrestling territory it was entrance theme for Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valient who was hotter than Hogan in 83/84 I'm sure he helped boost sales of this single
A dying if not dead art form of Harmony style group music that started in the 50's, Motown took it to another Universe and it started dying off in the 80's....Very few left. What a shame.
Just practice, practice, practice. And just when you think you can't practice anymore, just do it one more time. Someday, you could be even *better* than her! Good luck to you! ;-)
I'd agree that the MT version has the best vocals but, in fairness, the Darts version added a whole new dimension to the song. Namely, Den Hegarty's eyebrows.
I remember back in the 80s the publicity centered on Siegel. As if the record company suits could not get their head around the idea of four equally talented singers working together. Fortunatly Tim the others knew better & held to the vision.
Fridays was trying to attempt to be abcs answer to Saturday night live 2 pronlems ran into the 2nd half of johny carson and a lot of people were not going to switch over 2nd it was just a copycat of Saturday night live and that usualy doesnor w Imean being a copy cat/clone of anthoner show
The emperor: Gun that let's you direct bullets at will. So no skill needed. Sex Pistols: Little stands that let's you direct the bullets at will, and also they can get bullets to use them. Some skill needed and they can be used for defence. Manhattan Transfer: Stand that can reflect the direction of the bullets. Since it has to rely on the wind it does require a good amount of skill to use it.
I really like Manhattan Transfer, but British group Darts did this song a lot better. Nowhere near as technical proficient as MT and they were a group of Oddballs, but on this particular song they had a lot more verve and energy.
I 've been yeaning Janis's unforgettable voice so long time If someone asks me who' the most greatest female singer until now? I say "Absolutely Janis Siegel. neither Janis Joplin, nor Janis Ian.
I just realized this was over 30 yrs ago, how depressing. MT is one of the all-timers of vocal groups of course, and this was a fun dip into the pop world.
@jazzsoul60 Larry David for one but true not many made it from the cast of Fridays. I think the one thing everybody will remember of that show was when Andy Kaufman stepped out of character and smacked Michael Richards if memory serves!
maaannn..i remember this show. it just seemed like a bad SNL ripoff. it was seldom funny. but now to see one of my all time jazz vocal group, The Manhattan Transfer, was one of their guests, i have a new respect for the show.
"Hay, that was the height of fashion in the 80's. LOL!" It was - that was urban, retro Manhattan hip - people used to shop old clothing stores looking for vintage 50's clothes, satin jackets were a thing too, and bowling shirts - I remember those unlined jackets and skinny ties guys wore ( same style the guys with Blondie wore on album covers ) - I can remember Upper East Side parties with dozens and dozens of guys wearing those jackets, turning the lapels up was a thing
They always looked like they were having fun together when they performed. Just one of the things that made them so enjoyable.
the ganja mon
i have a rock n roll hall of fame walls of pictures.....THIS is one of them. sometimes you just need a little something different.
Janis was my favorite. Very underrated vocalist.
'Just loved Janis Siegel's vocals and her stage style... what an entertainer...!!
They always seemed to have fun performing. They put up a great show, singing great songs. Who cares about the outfits? In 20 years whatever looks soooo fashionable now will look like crap, but good music is immortal
RIP Tim Hauser. Thanks for the great music.
113 people don't appreciate real music.
Thanks. I Love The Manhattan Transfer. They had some Very Good Music.I Love this Song, as well as all of their other Songs also.Mmmmmmmm
Great version of a great song. Love to watch the dance routine of the backups, esp. Cheryl!
R I P Tim Hauser who passed away today Oct. 16, 2014
I'm shocked! I just saw this today...how sad.
I only knew about this today a very sad day indeed.
Perfect song for when you need to incriminate the daughter of the guy that killed your lord gay vampire
Yare yare Dawa
I still see Jimmy Valiant coming out to this song
I've rarely seen Manhatten Transfer deliver a lacklustre performance...they are passionate vocalists and dedicated to their craft and you can instantly tell that they love to sing...cool cats :)

+Earthling Forever and The Tavares, the O'Jays.....
Loved them forever and finally got to see them in person 6 years ago. Rest in Peace Tim Hauser.

I think this group is the most amazing vocal group in history
another one called "the Singer Unlimited" was great too but Manhattan Transfer was the best
I saw them in London last year on their Farewell World Tour. They do have an amazing body of work
This was the sond my lifelong girlfriend and I shared as our theme song. We blasted it on the car stereo all the way to the disco, every Friday and Saturday night. I miss you Beanie. You'll never be forgotten.
all this needs is Jimmy Valiant
👍👍👍
ClassicRocker61 Thats all I think about when I hear this song. Jimmy The "Boogie Woogie" Man Valiant's entrance in the NWA. With his crazy yellow and black tights and yellow bandana.
Yeah that would be cool especially if he was dancing . Like he used to to this song when he would come out to wrestle
Lol! Oh Yes!
Rest in Peace, Mr. Hauser

SNL is not like it used to be. The "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" were the biz Ness!!!
I used to LOVE SNL, but it's not what it used to be... :(

They were fabulous.
A nice live performance. Love the Manhatten Transfer.
I've not heard this song for a longggg time and it's still as refreshing as ever!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!
ahhh...the '80's...era of BIG hair and even BIGGER shoulder pads!!
I saw them live at Radio City, front row ticks i think 1979. They ROCKED!!
it was 1979 - I saw them too - I think the opening number was Birdland - they rose up on the stage elevator
I wonder if this group was ever aware how popular this song was in mid Atlantic championship wrestling territory it was entrance theme for Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valient who was hotter than Hogan in 83/84 I'm sure he helped boost sales of this single
Rest in peace Tim Hauser.
Pure class.
Oct. 18: RIP Tim Hauser of Manhattan Transfer. Thank you and God bless
A dying if not dead art form of Harmony style group music that started in the 50's, Motown took it to another Universe and it started dying off in the 80's....Very few left.
What a shame.
They performed this on American Bandstand, I believe the same year they went in on that performance. I still like the original more though.
They did. The episode is now on TH-cam
Janis Siegal is fine too
Love I was 15 and remember this
The Manhattan Transfer - the greatest singing group ever - can do a variety of singing styles so easily.
Wonderful when artists go on TV and don't lip synch!
Rare.
They are still great. They wear much better clothes now. Don't we all?
HAPPY 68TH BIRTHDAY ALAN PAUL (NOVEMBER 23, 2017)
Just practice, practice, practice. And just when you think you can't practice anymore, just do it one more time. Someday, you could be even *better* than her! Good luck to you! ;-)
Man, if you are not giving that performance a standing ovation, you are half comatose.
When the camera pans the audience at the end, there’s a couple in the front row that are too cool to clap. 😂😂
I'd agree that the MT version has the best vocals but, in fairness, the Darts version added a whole new dimension to the song. Namely, Den Hegarty's eyebrows.
They were jamming!!! :-)
I remember back in the 80s the publicity centered on Siegel. As if the record company suits could not get their head around the idea of four equally talented singers working together. Fortunatly Tim the others knew better & held to the vision.
RIP Tim Hauser
studio version entered Billboard May 23, 1981 Reached #7 ..originally by the Ad Libs from Jan 1965
This isn't bad, but I prefer the original from 1965.
Pretty pretty pretty good.

Great song. I'm glad they left shoulder pads to the 80's and to the NFL.
lol
aSingleDallasGuy
CLASSIC 😂😂😂
You can guess the year by the hair
What's a mohair suit?
Oops... I remember getting the 45s for this, the Stars on 45 Beatles and Beach Boys medleys. It was 1981.
Still waiting for Jimmy Valiant to come out and dance
I really like Manhattan Transfer, but British group Darts did this song a lot better.
Nowhere near as technical proficient as MT and they were a group of Oddballs, but on this particular song they had a lot more verve and energy.
Love the Manhatten Transfer.
I loved the Manhattan Transfer...loved them...Does anyone know who the bass player was in this video and did he tour with the Talking Heads?
Hell yeah Larry David.
EXCELENTE PERFORMANCE ,QUE EPOCAS !!
R.I.P. Tim Hauser.
crappy recording...can't even enjoy this at all!
Wrestler Hanson Jimmy Valiant the BOGGIE WOGGIE MAN Theme Song
I 've been yeaning Janis's unforgettable voice so long time
If someone asks me who' the most greatest female singer until now?
I say "Absolutely Janis Siegel.
neither Janis Joplin, nor Janis Ian.
Sigh. Janis Siegel and Cheryl Bentyne. Cheryl still performs in Georgetown (DC) from time to time.
Why are the vocalists always under-miked on this kind of tv show? We shouldn't have to strain to hear the singing.
What have they done to Janis Siegel! What a positively horrid dress on such a beautiful woman!
Blue-eyed soul right there
I just realized this was over 30 yrs ago, how depressing. MT is one of the all-timers of vocal groups of course, and this was a fun dip into the pop world.
and, yet, the song from the show taxi is very sad..when they cross the bridge..so it has its ups and downs...and they don't need no clowns.
Haha! This li'l song just popped in my mind - so funny! Timeless Music! : >
They're really swingin' it!
As a kid discovering The M.T's I always wish Janis Was my mother 👩

I saw them in concert in Spokane Wash. in about 1984 GREAT!!!!!!!
dozens of groups were out there; some made it some didn't; this didn't mean they were bad! this group never hit the big time
Still waiting for Jimmy Valiant to come out
Terrible impression of Howard Cossell, and this group was way toooo talented to be on that show.
A pity the sound-take is bad and so sound is muted or faded !
anyone know how the musical numbers fit in? is it 2 skits then music?
The Ad Libs may have done it first, but the MT took it to Mt Everest. Best vocal group ever ever EVER.
Hay, that was the height of fashion in the 80's. LOL!
"Hay, that was the height of fashion in the 80's. LOL!"

Always so joyful to listen to.
OMG they all were on fucking point
The WISE BOY from New York City? Really?
Josie, check the lyrics. No mention of the word WISE.
What's the deal with the guy that introduced them?
that was a parody of monday night football with Howard Cosell
I asked myself that for years...
It was a very bad Howard Cosell imitation.
This was definitely live, it’s different vocally from the record.
memory's from 1967 Augs urg 24 the infantry dev
omg 12 years to nice arrive to this place.
Supreme vocals
A tribute to this awesome group. A NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELEY SQUARE
great!!
the one gal sure can sing, but the red head sure can move. she is one funky lady. love her.
this is just too much damned fun. have to get out of this hick town in southern indiana.
I can't seem to find a version of this song that I can listen to. :(
OMG! Their version is AWESOME!! Thanks for giving us the info!! I LOVE their version!!!
Both girls have some oversized shoulder activity going on here.
I'm still fond of this song.
a'yup that was the style in 1981 Hair was big too
