Johns background vocals and harmonies at 3:30 onwards is just so hauntingly beautiful to listen to. It took a long time for me to really find those vocals even after listening to this song for almost 20 years
For those who are wondering, this song refers to one of the band members, Hillel Slovak who died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988. This song talks about his struggles from this addiction. The name of the song, “Otherside” is also used to say “afterlife”. Although it is sung by Anthony Kiedis, it is supposed to be Slovak’s voice and his perspective towards the situation. This song talks about how Slovak knows how much the drug has affected him and how he must kill himself to end his addiction. This song also shows his struggles to end this addiction by saying, “I yell and tell it (drugs) that it’s not my friend; I tear it down tear it down, and then it’s born again.” His constant struggle is also shown in the music video which shows a man waking up and then finding himself in the same position at the end of the video which means that it is a cycle that never changes and that never will change. The video also shows his struggles by having a scene where the man (Slovak) is fighting against his shadow which shows that he was initially fighting with himself due to the addiction. In general, this song is not only showing people Slovak’s struggles but also showing many other people’s struggles with the same problem.

I remember hearing this song years and years ago. Each and every time I play it feels like it was the first time I have heard this. Indeed this song has immortality.
Kevin Max Yeah man. It's just too mad the modern music industry is turning children into robotic guppies. Easily Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of few of my favorites. Been that way for years
I'm a teacher in a special school for autistic kids and thanks to one of them now I like this band a lot! He is so fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers and listen this music it keep him calm and happy :)
This came out the year my dad passed, my mom abandoned me, and I stayed in a broken house that literally didn't have a back wall. School was my sanctuary, this song reminds me of the strength it gave me back then, and now when I need it every now and then. Absolutely amazing song.
Believe in yourself. You can definitely change the cycle. 30 months of sobriety as of yesterday. All cold turkey. Never talk to nobody, never went to a meeting, Never went to a sober house...Nada! Never let anybody tell you that it's not possible and that you're doomed. All those in active addiction right now, your loved ones are waiting for you on "The other side"... 🙏🙏. God Bless you all
Nice work brother, same way I did it, I quit Crack 1 March 1999, I smoked 80 rocks the night before, was either going to die or quit, 25 years clean, married, good life, God ( or the other dude ) didn't want me yet.
@@steffithemad8327 It wasn't your time my friend. You had a lot of good to give to this world and 25 years later I'm sure you still doing it. Congratulations to you my friend and wish you another 25 years of sobriety.
It's okay to go to meetings, too. People talk about how they are living without drugs. Very good support. But if you can do it on your own, that's amazing! Keep it up. One is too many and a thousand is never enough
Sometimes sobriety costs more than you can know..that level of authenticity can cause the addict to sacrifice long time friends who won't also follow various 10 step progrms. People who have been in AA for a long time start to judge their friends by the same standards AA uses to judge the people who attend the meetings.
to anyone who is strugglin , it will get better , its hard but you can do this . im so proud of you even for waking up today and turning this beautiful song on , everything will be okay i swear ♡ take care

Anthony is so creative with his wording in speaking about his issues with addiction, this song is a masterpiece and he confronts the harsh reality of what he goes thru but realizes he has to stay on the Otherside
He doesn't just name-drop drugs to sound cool like most artists do who don't know what addiction is really like - you can tell Anthony really knows what he's talking about.
For still struggling with a really bad addiction, Anthony honestly never showed any signs that he was using. Always looked healthy for an addict. Kudos to the guys for surviving those times and leaving us with timeless classics.
Whenever I hear this song or see this video I'm immediately transported back to the summer of 2000 when I was 13. One of the best summers of my life. School ended in late June in Massachusetts and I'm pretty sure the first week or so was pulling all nighters at my house sometimes with friends or at one of their houses. This video would play two or three times everyday on MTV and we all loved it. One weekend in late June I went with my dad to Toronto to see the Jays play my Red Sox. In July I visited California for a week or so, came home and went to Sailing camp on the Charles River in Boston and then went to Martha's Vineyard to stay with my friend and his family in Oak Bluffs for TWO WEEKS. My summer nights were filled with watching the Red Sox unless it was Monday night because that is when I would watch WWF Raw. My family also had a trailer in a campground in Old Orchard Beach. We would go there every Friday night while not somewhere else as soon as my parents got home from work. The last weekend in August was my Sister's wedding and I loved having my entire family there. What a childhood I had😂😂😢😢😢😂😂😂

My favorite song from them… I just feel so nostalgic listening to this, it’s melancolic, so beautiful, during hard times it’s even better… It’s like a melody of hope for people in any kind of addiction… thanks you guys
The way the instruments are represented visually is so cool and clever. John wailing on one string at different spots for the solo while Flea frantically hits so many power lines and Chad keeps time in check in the center of a spinning clock. It’s just beautiful.
This song is sooo relaxing for people who are struggling with something. Note: listen to this at night with your eyes closed in the night with headphones and trust me it works to wind down and make you feel better mentally.
My dad used to love this one... When I started liking the same things he did... it was too late... May you rest in peace dad. I hope you're still watching me, I'm sorry for not being the best son, but I believe you'd forgive me.

My favorite song of theirs. I got this CD right before I left for basic training. One day we were out practicing D&C, I hadn’t heard music in over a month and they were blaring this song in a shop across the way. It took all I had not to start belting it out I was so excited I got to hear it!
This is their greatest song IMO. I get chills from the 1st bass chords thru the end - "....once you know you can NEVER go back..." Truer words have NEVER been spoken. This song sings to the heart.

This song was written about Hillel Slovak, the founding guitarist of the red hot chili peppers who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. One of my best friends Kevin died from a Heroin overdose in 2011 so this song hits pretty close to home. May the souls of the both of them, and anyone else who has ever succumbed to addiction rest in peace. 🌹
It's not about drug addiction or depression. It's actually about the slit on my neck that's all I've ever had literally since I was 5 months old. When they did a surgery on me & put a microchip in my head that's not my friend & a demon & leaving the scar tissue I wish you saw, my lonely view. I eventually electrocuted myself with 240 volts & fried the microchip taking me to the other side almost died but was finally free. Actually I might have died for a minute or 2 & came back to life I don't know cause no one else was there when I did it. I couldn't see from any where from 10 to 20 minutes. I just remember being shot across the room then I was on my back on the floor & couldn't see, hear or move but became more & more conscious & aware but as things started to return for the first time since they put it in me I could tell it wasn't working & it was great.
I can't express how grateful I am for this song. every time when i listen to it, it turns my soul inside out. thank you my best band for this masterpiece, my number 1 song of all times. Music video is an ART.

My mother played this song on the guitar and sang to it all through my childhood and I enjoyed listening to her. Today I first heard the original- it‘s great!
there's something about RHCP music that makes me nostalgic for the best and most painful memories in life and i feel a deep ache in my chest when i listen. love and hate this one so much for it lol
This was always their best one , in my eyes . I never realized it was about drugs and addiction. I always felt the darkness and depression. It definitely rang the bell of my own suicidal depression. Song still places a lump in my throat and a weight on my chest , today. Almost as much as it did when it was first released.
This is the song that some friends of mine sang at my best friend's funeral. His name was Francesco and he died beacuse of a car accident. He was the most bright soul ever existed...RIP my friend...glad that I've known you
is it because I'm getting older and feel strong nostalgia for some of these songs or are they really just that goddamn good? Like, i can't count how many RHCP songs feel like they were just always around, perfectly formed rock pop goodness born from the ether.
Their songs won't ever age. They take you for a ride thru sonic waves, it's just fantastic music and very unique for Rock, they are still too underrated.
This song is paradise for me every time I listen remember how I beat my dark side battle of heroin addiction. 4 years recovery is blessing for me. I was lost in otherside for 10 years. Thanks RHCP for this song so we all can related.
congratulations. 3 years here. i don’t really listen to this song to think about drugs i just really like it. i like that you can use it that way though. stay strong
So many artists nowadays don’t write meaningful songs. This whole song is a confession to being a drug addict. And it’s amazing that Anthony was willing to do this
The Intelligent Gamer I'm gonna be completely honest, I think that mostly wrong. There is still amazing music that carries a real message, a story. You just have to do a little digging, but what you may find is definitely worth it
they are amazing band, top 10 bands in history and for many even higher, also down to earth and really great song writers and players, he also sings incredible, really one of those bands that their music did not start for everybody but became for everybody, very hard to not like their songs because they are genius!
This is the first music video I've ever seen in 2002 when I was 4, or maybe it was 2001. I'll never forget knocking on my 20yo brother's door and getting into his tiny tiny room and him taking me onto his lap and showing me this video. I was truly mesmerised. I watched it completely still until the end and I think I asked to watch it again. I'm pretty sure it's my very first memory, and I think it affected all my visual and sonic preferences later in life.
@0nsight it is! Especially since my parents separated not long after that and I never lived with my brother again. His room was like Harry Potter's under the stairs
Life is a roller coaster. When I first heard this song I was 18 years old in Zimbabwe (Africa), fast forward I'm about to be 39 this year and I've lived in Australia, London (England), Dallas, Texas and now Toronto, Canada. What hasn't changed is my love for this song.... #Lockdownchronicles...
My best friend Ty loved Red Hot Chili Peppers and got to go to a couple of their concerts , he passed away a couple years ago but he loved their music and was a good soul full of positivity and good vibes something we should all have more of . Be safe everyone , tell someone you love them and ask a friend if their okay , take it from a stranger in the TH-cam comments section , your worth it , your a good person , have a great day . I miss you Ty I’ll see you on the otherside
Even if we momentarily discard the really powerful lyric and what inspired the song's creation, this stands as a top notch rock song with lots of good stuff going on throughout. Also, gotta say, some brilliant imagery in the music video, without spending a ton of dough. I get lost in it. Very creative and moody.

Keep it up. One is too many and a thousand is never enough
wish we could do the same with depression
Sometimes sobriety costs more than you can know..that level of authenticity can cause the addict to sacrifice long time friends who won't also follow various 10 step progrms. People who have been in AA for a long time start to judge their friends by the same standards AA uses to judge the people who attend the meetings.

"Otherside" refers to former band member Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose in 1988.
For still struggling with a really bad addiction, Anthony honestly never showed any signs that he was using. Always looked healthy for an addict. Kudos to the guys for surviving those times and leaving us with timeless classics.
I mean, in the music world is hard to find someone who isn't an addict to any kind of drug, it's sad but the truth...

This song was written about Hillel Slovak, the founding guitarist of the red hot chili peppers who died of a heroin overdose in 1988. One of my best friends Kevin died from a Heroin overdose in 2011 so this song hits pretty close to home. May the souls of the both of them, and anyone else who has ever succumbed to addiction rest in peace. 🌹
It's about addiction in general, including the addiction of John, Anthony and Hillel

Literally thousands of musicians have done songs about their drug addictions
The Intelligent Gamer I'm gonna be completely honest, I think that mostly wrong. There is still amazing music that carries a real message, a story. You just have to do a little digging, but what you may find is definitely worth it
I'm 55 years old and i always love this song, this album since 23, 25 years... thanks red hot chili peppers
No problem
2002, FOR 20y
I'm 49 love them
@@quantumfizzics9265 likewise
they are amazing band, top 10 bands in history and for many even higher, also down to earth and really great song writers and players, he also sings incredible, really one of those bands that their music did not start for everybody but became for everybody, very hard to not like their songs because they are genius!
@0nsight only on the internet can you have genuine and happy conversation with a guy named mermaid toes

Nowhere to go but up from here my friend!!!
Damn.. time really flies
Lol 😆🤣😂
Chili peppers and Zimbabwe ah nah sry
My best friend Ty loved Red Hot Chili Peppers and got to go to a couple of their concerts , he passed away a couple years ago but he loved their music and was a good soul full of positivity and good vibes something we should all have more of . Be safe everyone , tell someone you love them and ask a friend if their okay , take it from a stranger in the TH-cam comments section , your worth it , your a good person , have a great day . I miss you Ty I’ll see you on the otherside
Thank you, I hope to see you on the otherside also
Um dia em que você não sente parte desse mundo, ouvir esta musica dá um conforto.
Lembro de quando na tinha nem uma ideia para desenho. Eu colocava essa música para mim ouvi eu conseguia ter criatividade na hora
Eu entendo
Amo californication tanto quanto amo otherside.

Caracas,é complicado até em falar e comentar oq levou esse jovem a cometer esse ato, meus sentimentos para família do myles💙Forever
Uruguay noma! 🇺🇾. Tu vecino debe estar muy orgulloso de haberte enseñado tan buena musica. Salu compatriota

First Chili Peppers song I ever heard. I was 8 and immediately asked my parents to get me the CD Californication. Lucky my dad was a big fan so he obliged.
me too. first song, at age 8.
Same situation, but i was 12 . :D
Que envidia
Unfortunately I never owned any CDs but I started listening to them at 7 years old since I fell in love with Under the bridge and Californication
Been Listening since i was born thanks to my dad now 21
Still one of the best made music videos of all time, hands down. The visuals are absolutely phenomenal.
It's inspired by The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

It almost looks like something Michel Gondry would direct, but it doesn’t actually say who made the video. Anyone know?

Let’s be honest
It doesn’t matter what year it is, it’s nostalgic
One of those songs that conjured nostalgia when it came out .
@Universal nation *You're
Bro ur moms nostalgic
Yes
True, this was the very first RHCP song I ever heard.
Saving lives
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side, I don't
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat it's all I ever
I heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up and brought up the past
Once you know you can never go back
I gotta take it on the other side
Centuries are what it meant to me
A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind
I gotta take it on the other side
Take it on the other side
Take it on, take it on
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side, I don't
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat it's all I ever
Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray's full and I'm spillin' my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut
I've got to take it on the other side
Scarlet starlet and she's in my bed
A candidate for a soul mate bled
Push the trigger and I pull the thread, I gotta take it on the other side
Take it on the other side
Take it on
Take it on
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side, I don't
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat it's all I ever
Turn me on, take me for a hard ride
Burn me out, leave me on the other side
I yell and tell it that it's not my friend
I tear it down, I tear it down
And then it's born again
How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side, I don't
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat it's all I ever
How long, I don't, I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat it's all I ever

I like how in the beginning you see the dude on the ground...you see that he repeats the same cycle, but, it implies he isnt giving in
The chorus and the bass, pff give me goosebumps. It is my favorite song of the band without a doubt.
