"Sew a seam; press a seam, " is a litany that seems to be part of my fiber. I use a Rowenta Focus 1700 W iron which would not be easy to convince me to replace. My husband is meticulous about his "pressing business" ( work shirts) and is completely won over by this iron. There is one caveat to using irons with this wattage, especially in my 60+ year old home. Always use an appliance extension cord to carry the electricity safely to the iron, otherwise, the iron may suffer sudden death. Currently, our Rowenta Focus has been in daily use. Even thought it is wise to empty the water, we don't. We do use distilled water to fill it. We only use one setting: highest and steam. We just hover over specialty fabrics. Renee, your video covered all of the essentials about ironing and I appreciate your assessment of such a vital sewing appliance. I rank the value of my iron just a tiny bit below my sewing machine.
Rina, Excellent information here! I will get myself some distilled water now. I'm always running down the hall to refill the tank. I think it will save time - especially if I don't have to drain it too. My go-to setting is highest steam too. It does a great job! Thank you for your generous tips, Renee
Hi Renee... being of German decent and quite familiar with Rowenta... want to caution EVERYONE NOT to turn up too much heat when ironing WOOL!! If iron is too hot and not enough steam, your WOOL garment will get SHINY... therefore it's ruined!! before invention of steam irons... we always ironed our velvet, wool + garbadine slacks and skirts with a damp thin flowersack like towel between the iron and the garment. OLD trick that I still use TODAY on special fabrics to prevent shine!! I think the issue of needing to turn up temp to properly remove wrinkles lies elsewhere... and NOT in the "inefficient design of German engineering".... LOL!! 😌 it's been my experience that there's a HUGE difference between German and American washing machine wash and spin cycles... wherein MOST likely lies the answer! also some people may DRY their garments too hot in the dryer... actually SETTING the wrinkles! Germans have ONLY manufactured garment protecting frontloaders since wringer machines were outdated... with HIGHLY selective and built-in spin cycles that leaves garments MUCH LESS wrinkled upon cycle finish. also MANY Germans still hang their laundry out to dry in fresh air... rather damp to avoid much ironing today. but IMO even many of the new American front loaders strangely twist garments during the spin cycles causing MANY MORE annoying wrinkles and wear and tear on garments... forget Top loaders...worse!! believe me... I'm pretty sure I hit the nail on the head!! 👍😌 you may be surprized how well engineered and strictly tested German appliances are by LAW... and how meticulous and environmentally conscientious Germans take care of ALL their laundry! 👍😜🌞👕👗🎽👖👚 NOTHING beats Rowenta irons IMO and I've been ironing since I was a little girl... trained on tons of handkerchiefs... LOL!! 🇺🇸🇩🇪🇺🇸
Shepherd Bella, Thanks for the words of caution. Ironing from the backside is the best bet in case anyone is unsure. My husband is an engineer with a wonderful German company and I know that they do extensive testing on their products. I believe that the Rowenta company would prefer that their iron have to be turned up to the next highest setting than have the user ruin his/her garments. It's just my opinion. I still love mine - it's just an FYI for all the folks out there considering a new iron. Thanks for your point of view, Renee
Mad Church Disease, You are so kind! I'm so happy you purchased a Rowenta (the Cadillac of irons) and I know you'll be very pleased with it. I love mine! I can't take credit for the bathroom - the previous homeowners did such a pretty job with it. I just get to enjoy it - yay! Please check out my website reneeromeo.com for more DIY adventures. Karen, I am trying to improve on my process every time I make a video and try to highlight all the features that I would be interested in. Thanks for the nice complement! Renee
Renee, I went and bought the Rowenta. I ended up choosing the Intelligence Technology :) No setting required, No burning, Safe on all fabrics and I just absolutely love it. You know I was able to iron everything, even things that burned in the past with another iron. Thank you so so much for having made your review.
Agree on the "cool" nature of the Rowenta line of irons. For my use on "less than delicate fabrics" (cotton, poly blends, poly Walmart fabrics), I simply crank the temp knob all the way to the max, and with always using the profuse steam setting (I have an older, for dry use only iron that no longer is used with steam because it leaks more than my wallet), the Rowenta line can handle without harm most common synthetic or cotton fabrics that I have worked with.
Michael Rodney, I'm sure that Rowenta knows this is a common 'complaint'. I'm not sure why they haven't changed their settings. Do you think that they don't want to be held responsible for scorching? It's funny about your dry iron - I have one just like it! Thanks for the laugh, Renee
Hey, Martha Stewart uses or used this iron. I have had mine for about 5 years, never had a problem with mine. I use mine mostly for upholstery fabric, which as you know is a thicker grade of fabric. I played with mine since seeing your video and you are right about the lower settings. Never use vinegar to clean this iron, so the instructions say. speaking of videos I never did get to see your last one, it just would not come in. LOVE your scarf, good video.
Nancy, I've been meaning to do this video since I got mine. Sometimes you just need to live with a product for a while so that you can accommodate for its shortfalls. I really do like this iron for steam. I forgot to comment on being able to use it vertically (like on drapes) because I have a separate steamer for that purpose. I love my 'toys' - it sounds like you do too! Thanks so much for the compliments and the tips, Renee
I wish the Rowenta Anti-Calc iron had a beep when it was up to temperature and when it sat too long, like my husband's Black and Becker. I really like that feature.
I just purchased the Rowenta DW9280, and the steam is amazing. However, when I hit the dedicated steam button, a significant amount of water comes out the sides and onto my clothes. I even saw a bit of gritty stuff in the water. Like, was this a used iron and returned, Amazon?!? Anyway, great video. Do you have any thoughts on my situation? Thanks again!!
Danny, I think your iron was tested before being shipped. It is a good idea to move the steam dial all the way to self clean and have the system empty out over your sink. Once you eliminate it, wipe down the heat plate with a soft, wet cloth and you're good to go. If you only iron occasionally, it may be good practice to do this process before every ironing session. See how it goes. I iron all the time and I can go two weeks between cleanings. All the best, Renee
Hi Margaret, I think its just packing material to protect the sole plate. You can keep it for storage or moving purposes though. Enjoy your lovely new iron! All the best, Renee
Emmy Dingler, I'm so happy you purchased one! I felt the same way - who knew it would be a game-changer? Thanks for the feedback. Now others may feel compelled to get one and take the chore out of ironing. Much appreciated! All the best, Renee
Jurell Rapay, I'm glad you liked this video enough to comment on it. I try to save everyone some time and effort when it comes to product research. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well but in this case, there are more positives than negatives so this iron is a keeper. Thanks for the nice comment, Renee
@@massagetherapyforinjuriesf8197 I really like mine. You can get other irons for half the price and most do a good job of ironing clothes. In my experience, you're paying for the longevity of the Rowenta iron here. I replaced other irons after just two years of functionality because the steam feature would always break and leak. My Rowenta has held up over 4 years now (double the time I ever got out of any other iron - without issues) so I feel like the investment is worth it. Others that I have talked to about this have had the same luck. I hope this helps your purchase decision! All the best, Renee
Charles, I'm sending this video to the Rowenta company so that they can (hopefully) address the setting issues. I would at least expect an explanation as to why the heat settings aren't perfect. It requires a little bit of thinking on my part and I think this is a disservice to the iron. Other than that issue - I love the iron. Thanks for the feedback! All the best, Renee
Hi Sue, If you're still experiencing problems with spitting, I would contact the company and see if they'll do something about it. I'm certain that they've heard about this issue before and know that it's a common complaint. I'd love to hear how you make out and what they're willing to do for you. I'm really happy with the performance of mine - you should be too! Please keep me posted, Renee
I just got the cord reel rowenta iron and am finding it a bit awkward as it is longer and heavier than my previous rowneta iron that stopped working, 10-12 tears old. I’m thinking about getting a lighter and not quite so long one. Do you think this would be a lighter one? Or could you recommend another one? This one seems sort of like my old one but the handle and buttons are different. I love the cord reel but it’s just awkward for me because the iron is longer. Thank you. 🙂
Anitabrwakone, Sorry to hear about your oldie-but-goodie! This iron seems like a good fit. It's not too heavy and very easy to maneuver. I really like mine and use it at least once a week. Best wishes!! Renee
I just bought a Steamforce and I love it. I feel like I can control the steam more perfectly because it's not automatic. I have to press a lever to generate the steam . It's much more precise for my sewing work and does a great job while ironing in general. I hope this helps! All the best, Renee

I got my Rowenta x more the 10 years! ...and never have a problem...heat up faster..etc,etc..( DM 880 ), But now I hear a lot of complaints about leaking water. I love my Rowenta.. but...Im thinking seriously in another brand...
Jorge Pachas, I think the leaking issue revolves around the fact that we're all too impatient to let the water heat up to proper temperature for steam to be produced. It takes 30 seconds to a minute for mine to come up to temperature after pouring water in the reservoir. If the water isn't hot enough to steam, it leaks out as water. It's just something to be aware of. I'm still very happy with mine. I hope this helps your decision making. All the best, Renee

I would tape the converter to the plug so that you never forget and damage the iron. I hope this helps! All the best, Renee

This high priced iron leaks water all over your clothes. Apparently they went cheap on their sealant and it leaks water so badly that it can;t be used for steam because your clothes will be covered in water. Who wants to buy and store more than one iron? At their price, buy another brand that won't leak and will work for everything
