That was one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. You were clear about everything and I appreciate the time it must have taken to put it all together. As a matter of interest I also have that same colour scheme MT09 and have the same exhaust. I searched for a video about installing the exact same air filter and it was like you were doing the job on my bike hahaha. I had no idea about the mixture setting capabilty so I am following your figures to be safe. Many many thanks. Awesome job mate!
Robert Kennedy Hi Robert! - Many thanks for this feedback, I really appreciate it. Thank you for stopping to leave a comment mate! - Awesome - Like a Boss! :oD RSMF-*RI* Mr B
Great video thank you. I need to install my heated grips and need to remove the tank to install the wires. Your clever way of tank removal will help me a lot!
What CO settings would you recommend for stock pipe and filter? People recommend different settings, anywhere from +8 to +14. Would love to know your thoughts on the matter. Thanks! Love your vids BTW :)
Great videos mate. Iv only just found you on yt after searching on safari to adjust suspension. Much easier than I thought,& has improved my stock set up tremendously. I have a 2014 MT09,& have a question if I may. Assuming your still doing this sort of thing? Recently had a second hand akrapovic exhaust put on by a bike shop,& I think the air/fuel mixture is too rich. What settings do you recommend on the dash for each cylinder? Thanks to your video, I never knew it was that easy to adjust. Cheers from Australia. 👍
Clear instructional video Mr. B, thanks. A couple of questions though; first, would you not be able to hear the pinging if she's running lean, or does the Akro prevent that, or is it just not discernible? Where's a decent place for dyno, and what's a reasonable price to expect to pay? What does running lean mean (engine runs too hot because of too weak fuel to air mixture)? And what are the consequences of running lean ( excessive engine wear)? As you've increased the air flow through your engine with the new intake filter, and also increased the flow of exhaust gasses out with the Akro, it's a good idea to get it dynoed to make sure everything is balanced again, as you said. Have you noticed any excessive popping from the exhaust that indicates unburnt fuel being exhausted, or any other signs that by making these changes it's upset the air/fuel flow balance - like bogging down or other symptoms? You don't need to answer any of my questions, of course, but when you do an instructional video that alters the balance of fuel/air mixture through an engine sometimes it's useful to put that in the broader context for people who don't understand some of the key basic terms like 'running lean.' Oh, a spark plug check is a good indicator for running states, lean, normal, and too rich, so even without a dyno people could do periodic checks and make further minor adjustments as necessary to alter the mixture. It seems funny doing this by computer compared to carbs. Cheers
Pete F Pinging as I remember was a two stroke issue, so no pinging. Dyno would be 'Hammer and Tongs' - Best prices I know and on their website =) Lean = not enough fuel in the mix and caused hot running which will damage (much faster wear) the engine over time if not corrected. Always dyno when changing Filter and Race pipe. Popping - yes lots, as air is injected into the exhaust manifold to meet new EU regs. You can leave it to pop and fire flames or fit smog plates, no change to performance though. Plug tip Colours - White = Lean, Brown = Good, Dark or Oily = Too Rich Dyno is the best way to tune FI bikes controlled by ECU Great Questions RSMF-*RI* Mr B
great video. do you know if the steps are pretty much the same for the mt09 tracer? obviously the fairings are different. what about accessing the diagnostic menu? can that be done? cheers.
Don't use a screw driver to take the clips off you ecu cables! If you break the tabs you are mega f'd. The just press up and come off easy! Also don't take the drain hoses off the tank, just unclip from by sprocket and pull hoses up.
OK, so your fuel adjustment made me very curious. I looked at my Yamaha service manual and found on page 8-37 info about changing the co setting however it states that it is at idling so I'm wondering if you are in fact still running lean. I too have a K&N filter but with a stock exhaust. I may try to change this co setting a small amount but I don't get the impression it is for the whole RPM range. You may want to check your spark plugs. If you have a full exhaust and filter and your bike is not popping or backfiring on deceleration then maybe I'm wrong.
Great vid Mr B. I have recently purchased a 2015 MT 09. You mentioned in the vid that you would get the bike on a dyno after setting the co to 20 ( richer, rather than leaner). Have you done that and if so, were there any adjustments to the co. Great effort. Look forward to the next vid.
Great video mate .thank you... i own a xsr 900. didnt get the Akra yet but its coming.in the meantime though i should be able to put the k&n filter without having to mess with the flow settings right ?
Hi dude! I have a question: You change the Co settings just if you put a K&N air filter? or you must change settings if you put a non stock exhasut and a k&n?? I want just to put a K&N air filter on my MT09 2018...should I change the settings og Co like you did? Thank you!!
In your previous video, you showed how to change the CO level after you installed an akro exhaust, where did you get the stats for CO level? The reason why I'm asking is because I installed a Yoshimura exhaust, and I'm wondering what level my CO should be. Thanks!
Another great "How to" video for the MT-09 and another job I plan to do on mine. Did you notice any sound or performance change yet? I bet you don't hear much over the sound of that dam loud exhaust do you?
Very informative video Andy. Good job. Need a piece of advice, though. I changed to akra carbon but still on stock air filter. Is it okay? Should I change the air filter too? Meantime, what CO settings with akra carbon and stock filter should I used? Thanks in advance Andy.
Syamsul Herman Hi Buddy, +14 is the setting with just pipe, changing the air filter to a high flow like a K&N will give you more power... also the K&N can be cleaned, so it's a money saver too, last filter you will buy. RSMF-*RI* Mr B
Hi, Im installing my K&N filter today on fz09, I also have the m4 slip on (not full exhaust) . How much fuel flow should I choose?? 18 or 20 or less? Thanks
The fuel adjustment doesn't work on my 2014 Yamaha fz 09. It will go into the Diag but from there if you push select it doesn't do anything. But if I hold them both again it goes to a thing that says D1 1 and I can adjust it to 99. Idk if it's because I have a power commander or what
Pretty sure Lucy is quite right wing actually. 5:46 - that's an internationally recognised sign, but not for push gromits ;-) You need to have a word with the neighbour. Great video- Question-I just put the Akra TI exhaust on my FZ09-I am in California. I have the catalytic convertor in. Did you ever get it on a dyno?
could you put the filter in the deep lid channel first then slide it down the air box channels?

Great video, but that K&N set-up is shit. They should make it easier to get the top of the airbox into the rubber groove.
The CO setting is for idle ONLY it has no effect on wide open throttle what so ever
It affects the throttle from idle up to 2000 RPM, as far as I've heard. Above 2000, the lambda sensor takes over and regulates the mix automatically.
