I had lived in Japan when I was a kid and I loved getting my hair done there. I’ve been told all my life that I was nappy headed by other American stylist and then I go to Japan and they are so gentle with detangling. Even when I got my hair braided, I felt literally no pain. Eventually, my mom found someone who could do a silk press and I looked cute for days. I distinctively remember that every time I got my hair done and it took longer than expected, they would always give me juice and candy. It was a very good experience.
That's sad! When I was a teenager I wanted my hair cut in a certain style. The stylist that came highly recommend by friends was a white man. He owned a hair salon in a predominantly African-American area. He was very talented & he understood how to care for Black hair! The relaxer & cut he gave me looked just like the style in the picture I showed him. Now I am all natural & strictly maintain my natural hair, but he was definitely one of my top stylists!
I love that the hair technician didn’t seem scared of the hair but seemed excited. Like he was like “ Finally a Challenge!” I wish people over here in America were more like that.
@@sleepythemis me neither lmao I don't even have coily or kinky hair and every time I've gone to a hairdresser in the US it hasn't been that great. I started cutting my own hair because of it. Can't imagine having to care for type 3b-4c hair

You are so right. Always being polite and respectful and willing to please their customers no matter what. That’s what sets Jason apart from most countries.
@@Ashley_Magnolia I never said they did. The way they said IT made it seem like they did tho considering they said “Japanese mindset” which makes no sense😐..
@FREAQU genuine question: what was harmful about the techniques he used? i've never looked very deeply into natural hair but i know it needs a lot of moisture so i'm wondering if it was mostly the heat of the straighteners
@FREAQU thank you so much for replying, i understand now that were was so much done wrong. so many hairstylists are unfamiliar with black hair and seem to hope that a black person never walks through their door so they dont have to learn how to work with it. almost like its a taboo. thanks again for teaching what he did wrong, i hope more people see this and take it into account
As a non-Black person, I’ve come to realize my favorite stylists are those who genuinely enjoy a hair challenge. Not the lazy ones who wants simple and easy but still charging you an arm and a leg. The true hair artists want creativity, want education, want opportunities to explore. Hair is their medium. This guy fits that mentality. He truly enjoys his job
So true !! I ve been seeing the same hair stylist for more than 20 years. He still styles my hair way longer than he cuts it .. you can see he truly has visions and enjoys his job
I mean but this is a different kind of challenge tho. Honestly I don’t want anyone to do my hair that doesn’t know how to do my hair. That’s like going to a chicken place and ordering seafood and expecting it to be good.
I love a stylist that doesn’t have that “we don’t do that type of hair” attitude. All stylists worldwide should be taught all textures as part of their certification from now on.
@@senoracheapee1864 Nah because I went to a stylist and it was very clear she didn't know how to do my black hair because I looked like a pyramid when I came out....
@@senoracheapee1864 fun fact: everyone actually isn’t taught how to do black hair here in America which is why people get turned away and all. I know someone who went to hair school and had to teach herself to do hair like mine. It’s trash right because I also thought that it was. I think it’s slightly gone over but not enough to do that hair.
💯💯💯💯💯♥️♥️♥️♥️🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 yesssss and I'm sure he's going to call her to ask her to try again ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💞💞💞 more of these kind of people PLEASE SWEET LORD 🙌🏾
Lol from experience I know Japanese people will do this and also buy books about it and find ppl with the same interest/meet up groups. I remember seeing a dude on the train reading about the basics of footsal. 😊 I love their eagerness and sense of compromise with things.
I love how willing he was to learn. He tried his best and he did great! There are even a few Black hairdressers who dislike working with 4c hair, or find it tiring, smh
Maybe it can get tiring when you have to do this everyday, multiple times a day. For the japanese guy its his first time dealing with 4c hair so its a new experience for him, something new to learn, but not smth he had to do all the time. That said, its still not any reason to be rude to the customer.
That's so sad! As a stylist myself, I love working with different hair textures, I may not be great at it (just not enough people to practice on), but I certainly enjoy it!
not gonna lie, i fell in love with him, his personality, his manners, his HAAAANDS, his hair, his style. Nope, now my dream is to go to japan and let this guy do my hair
I love that when he initially touched the hair you could see the curiosity and desire he had about understanding the texture and how best to treat the hair. I know people are completely ignorant and rude to poc about their hair but he just seemed so genuinely excited to learn and do his best for you. It wasn’t that “can I touch your hair” it was like, “can I understand your hair?” And “I’m gonna take care of you.” It was so sweet
Well to be fair I think specially in asian countries there are very few foreigners so they tend to be very curious and excited to touch foreigners haurs. I'm white and when I went to a chinese hairdresser they could not stop playing with my hair. They maid a beautiful S shaped fishtale braid into my hair just to get some more time to touch it haaha
They should all learn to style black hair because its the most versatile. It curls, it stands, it straightens, it puffs naturally! The hairdresser who masters this should be an asset in these salons.
Idk how the TH-cam algorithm got me here but I’m so thankful. I got a bit choked up watching this. I know it’s just a simple video of going to the salon but to me it went so much deeper. The hospitality to those different from you, looking at something new as amazing, seeing challenges as exciting, the openness to learn. Hair is so dear to black culture and his attitude towards you was everything to me. Everything! God bless him and his business. I hope he reaches success, he deserves it. And thank you for giving those who aren’t black the opportunity to learn.
Same, I have thin, ruler-straight hair, but I'm a little teary at his excitement to work with your hair. He's like a child experiencing something new and exciting, but with respect and maturity. What a delightful person.
@oof actually, kinky hair should be blow dried in sections and tucked away after each section is done. (Twisted or placed in a small bun) However, I do agree that he did an amazing job for someone who has never touched kinky hair.
@oof "females be taking hair too seriously" idk but I see your internal misogyny lmao we take care of hair since it's part of our body and appearance is important for job's etc also please refrain from using "females" we are humans too not a different specie when talking about your so called "females" pleaseeeeee use women unless your writing a biology exam/ a scientist, also Women are not the only one's that should be taking care of hair and being "picky" Men should too we're all humans after all
U can tell when someone truly love their craft and is a true professional. Because some people wouldn't even try. But because he actually loves doing hair he was willing to try something he had never done before. I give him A for effort. Obviously he couldn't really do the styling part but that MASSAGE made up for it. Also he had a great attitude. You always want someone with great energy doing your hair because they're working on your head.
I'm a hairdresser and i love the fact that you giving him space to learn. Some customers are really mean when they see your not doing it there way. I mean we are all people and sometimes its possible that someone can not do it correctly the way you like it. But i love your patience girl ❤️
I'm glad that they could both vibe while she helped him through the process of straightening her hair. I would honestly do the same in her situation. There's a pandemic going on and he was willing to try something new. He deserves a stress free zone.
The thing is I get what u are saying but at the same time it’s just irritating that most of the time black hair dressers can do everyone’s hair but anyone that’s not black doesn’t know how to do black hair and what are the chances of me trusting a non black hair dresser that doesn’t have experience with my hair texture? Probably like 0.5 percent if I’m being completely honest lol
@@taelerrwashington9712 You're very justified in feeling that way, especially for your stated reasoning. It's because of those very issues that I feel it important to gently encourage those outside the culture who really want to learn our hair from the roots, and equally important to have helpful volunteers when it's time to truly test their mettle. 💜
I like how you go in knowing that this will likely be a new experience for a typical Japanese salon. People can be be very sensitive when it comes to their hair and something like this would terrify some people I know. You went in with a smile and faith and blessed this man with a brand new learning experience. I just love the positivity!
@@exoticalBecky_Miami Why? It's not like hair stylists know how to do their own race's hair😂. I quit going a long time ago. One time I had a chick cut bangs so thick it was almost half my head as bangs. Was a sad day
That's the best part of this video for me 🙋🏽♀️❤ 2 ppl from different cultures, but w/ so much more in common...now if we can all do this on a global scale...I always think of John Lennon's song...Imagine...✌🏾💯
It was adorable. Reminded me of my daughter’s friend who had 4c hair. My daughter never seemed to notice it until her friend had the cutest little fluffy pigtails (instead of the braids she normally had). She scrunched them and they both giggled. She was around 2.
I think that a lot of hairdressers tend to be like "I know what I'm doing. I don't need you to show me or tell me nothing" so it's refreshing to see a hairstylist so ready and willing to take the time to learn something new. He was so excited and smiling so hard the whole time. Remember everyone, we are all students of our craft even after we leave school. There's so many experiences that school just cannot prepare us for. Remain willing to learn.
Exactly!! I thought the same when I saw her giving him directions and picking the comb... I was amazed at both! Her for having realistic expectations and be willing to teach! Him for having the patience and excitement to learn so much! The fact that both were patient, polite and smiley is what makes this video so wholesome to me 🥰 Plus he was so cute (I mean his attitude)!! And them vibing to Maroon 5?! 💘💘💘💘💘💘
I live in a predominantly white country so hairdressers tend to cater towards that hair. My daughter and I have Polynesian hair though, shit is curly so I try to learn them something but they all think they know everything and they end up knowing fuck all. I found one recently who kinda listens so I guess that's something lol.
Why is this so wholesome to me 🥺 I think is because he seems so excited and ready to play with your hair, this man has been waiting for your type of hair his whole career and he is so receptive of what you tell him
I'm not usually a fan of these kinds of videos because they are SUPER cringey. But honestly... I feel like this was such an educational experience for him. You are awesome.
Honestly they had wide tooth combs and a pic which is what caught me of guard (in a good way). He also was really willing to learn which earns my respect any day
I lived in Japan for 7 years. I NEVER even considered going to a Japanese salon. Always did it myself or my mom did it. But let me tell you, his attitude was everything! Not shying away, accepting challenge, his care, not wiping his hands after touching it (from what I saw!). Attitude is half the battle. Love this! 👍🏾
Right...I noticed that too. He even touched his hair right after he was initially examining her. Not a care in the world just wanted to give her service as she requested.
My mom had her hair done while in Japan but she had a relaxer in her hair. So it was a wash, blow dry and roll brush curl. Her hair was very soft and light feeling 5 days later when she arrived back in the USA.
@@aksmith2001 thank you for your response. I love hair, and his reaction made my heart sing! I'm not a stylist, but I want to touch everyone's hair, lol. It's a beautiful curiosity. 🥰
He’s so cute while trying to learn.. so respectful.. this is such a beautiful video.. the fact that you are willing to go there and the way you respectfully guide him .. and the way he does his job.. this video is heartwarming..🥰
I have to commend your patience and willingness to educate him knowing that it would be outside of his comfort zone! He was so sweet and enthusiastic, I'm proud of him for taking on a new hair type! Do you plan to visit his salon again soon? This is my first video of yours and I love your personality
Edit: OMG, I WASNT EXPECTING MY COMMENT TO REACH SO MANY PEOPLE! THANK YOU FOR THE 600 LIKES, GUYS! 😳😭😭💕 Let's take a moment to appreciate this man's kindness and dedication. - He asked for her PERMISSION before taking photos. - Complimented her - Asked her if the temperature was bearable for her - He didnt scrub her scalp very harshly, he took all his time - He asked HER which comb he should use, how to section her hair...etc - He straightened her hair very slowly Seriously, we should all have a hairdresser like him.
I use to live in Japan I taught a few ladies how to braid and they ended up opening their own braiding shop. If I hit the mega millions I'm moving back.
Stop giving away our culture you would have had to pay millions to learn how to do something that was culturally there's yet we give away our technique next thing you know they'll have shops overcharging black women to do their hair
He's going to share stories, many generations, about the day he saw a woman with raven sponge like hair- that didn't feel wet while washing it, curls smaller than his pinky nail and that grew infront of his face While he straightened it. Legends are born when diversity is embraced.
1. That hairdresser was super adorable. 2. You are super adorable. 3. Thanks for sharing this with me. 4. Thanks for sharing yourself with this hairdresser. You could've made assumptions. He could've made assumptions. Y'all didn't and came together to teach each other. Well mostly you taught him. But I love that you did.
This is why I don't get mad when people ask to touch my hair. Its such a versatile accessory we have and everyone's is different. His reactions were so nice to watch and your steam/massage looked heavenly z
A hair stylist is welcome to touch my hair of course but strangers at the grocery store? Noooo ma'am! They better keep those Covid fingers away from my scalp! 😂 If they're so passionate about different hair textures they can go to cosmetology school...this isn't a petting zoo.
Honestly I’m a hair person. I absolutely love playing with people’s hair. BUT! I would NEVER ask someone I didn’t know and that we weren’t comfortable with each other. It’s such a personal thing. Hairdressers I’m fine with cause it’s their job. But strangers? No.
When you were helping guide him and he just said, "I'm excited" so earnestly I started to tear up 🥺 what a wonderful personality and work ethic that man has
He did a great job for his first time. And I love how excited he was to learn. That was so cute and honestly surprised me. Simply because of how Japan is. Absolutely loved this.
He is definitely on the right track. Once he learns that you have to place a heat protectant on the hair, then, you have to blow out the hair as straight as possible, then do chase method for the press, he will have all the folk in Japan coming to him. Cause you can do this on all hair types. I am so happy he was willing to learn. I hope he dives into it. For his first attempt, good job!
I absolutely LOVE watching people with this hair type get their hair done, in any way, it's so satisfying and always beautiful outcomes! I didn't know that about 4c hair.. there's so much other cultures don't know about each other and it's awesome getting to learn about other people & all the unique ways we're all so different but, still a lot of the same.
It was such a coming together of hearts and hair! He was willing to listen, but you were very patient. He was willing to be filmed in his profession, and you were willing to be his teachable moment. Made me all cozy inside. You met a lovely professional and you got your massage!! All my best.
I love the way she’s helping him and he’s actually paying attention and taking notes Instead of acting like he knows everything about hair like how most hairstylist act. And his Lil dancy dance 🥺🥺You can tell he genuinely loves what he does
The amount of patience and care that he took, you could tell that he genuinely didn't want to hurt her while trying to comb her hair through. What a wonderful hairdresser! He was so excited to learn something new also. I wish more hairdressers were like this man rather than seeming annoyed at being paid to cut or style your hair.
I guarantee he’s ready to go to a school that teaches how to do ethnic hair. His excitement was contagious. I smiled through it. I give him an A- because he gave it an excellent try
He's so beautiful and attractive.. His smile under his mask.. His eye wrinkles..the star on his finger... The care he manifests in the whole process... And please in the start of the video when he quickly touches her hair and gets excited as if a kid is given a new toy... This man is so cherish able.. God protect him 🍷✨
Caribbeans do, especially if you have major shrinkage like I do. After a big chop I went in with an inch TWA to get it trimmed. She washed and blow my hair out and said “where did all this hair come from, when you walked in your hair looked so short “. We were cracking up... I also went to an Asian American salon because of the neighborhood I lived in, and guy who cut my hair twice was very nice but the lady who colored it was very rude on my last visit, so I never went back.
such a handsome nice stylist. Love the fact he was willing to try something new and you were so patient for him. Great video. I was cringing when he started combing your hair from the middle/root vs ends but still enjoyed the video
I love his attitude about it! He doesn’t look at it as a burden or something to be scared of. He looks at it as something new to learn! This is a good approach to have in life and on the job

He's so attractive bec of how he presents himself and his personality and attitude 😩✨💖

He is fantastic. I loved how he was honest in saying he had not done black hair but "we will try". True artist.
My mom is a hairstylist and I know she would really appreciate this comment
So true!
Or the cut it off ones 😀
I love a stylist that doesn’t have that “we don’t do that type of hair” attitude. All stylists worldwide should be taught all textures as part of their certification from now on.

So true 👌
Lol more than a few sadly.
Passion and patience.

Your hair not the hair **
Well to be fair I think specially in asian countries there are very few foreigners so they tend to be very curious and excited to touch foreigners haurs. I'm white and when I went to a chinese hairdresser they could not stop playing with my hair. They maid a beautiful S shaped fishtale braid into my hair just to get some more time to touch it haaha

He did scare me a bit on the blow drying part though. But he did an amazing job for his first time on a Black girl! 🙌🏾
@oof actually, kinky hair should be blow dried in sections and tucked away after each section is done. (Twisted or placed in a small bun) However, I do agree that he did an amazing job for someone who has never touched kinky hair.
@oof It's important to enlighten yourself. That hairdresser showed how open he is to learning. You should follow his example. Have a nice day.
