- I am Nigerian and my skin is melanin popping. On the other hand the typical Asians/Japanese are used to non melanin clients and so this is the case also with the make up artists over here. Its been years down the line now and i Cant tell you the struggle is over, so i understand the concern of those asking about practical day to day life activities like this over here other than 'book'. In this video, i made an appointment with a make up artist that has never worked on a black client before. This helps give you a realistic view.

Absolutely! I grew up in Japan in the 80s. As teenagers, we walked into our local Japanese salon and asked if they could do our goku-jin hair! Without batting an eyelid, they gave it a go! Nowadays there are a lot more salons that will do it. But this is my most enduring memory of being a teenager in Japan.
I wouldn't say "the Japanese as a nation" cuz there's rude people everywhere but these people in particular were great

The fact is Japanese culture focuses on discipline, respect, honor and the group rather than individual.
Folks who want to break out and not conform were and to some extent are dealt shame and stigma: 出る釘は打たれるthe nail that sticks out gets hammered down.
So the collective statement that Japan collectively are these things is correct.

The transgender and drag queens put those trends in style and honestly we shouldnt follow nothing they do. The mock us and laugh at us women. Obviously, drag queens basically wear theater makeup.
It blows my mind that when you go to these places in Asia and get your hair and makeup done as a black person, in tourist areas they don't refuse you and work hard to make you happy but as a black person in America I have been turned away because certain shops have never learned how to do black hair and won't attempt to learn and many non-black MUAs here in American cant match shades for shit.

If they don’t have the shades or tones or even foundation adjusters in their kit - RUN AWAY. They shouldn’t even call themselves a makeup artist.
In Canada as well it’s frustrating... we don’t do your hair type we can’t do ur makeup.... annoying much u know
I was worried at first about the foundation color not being a match, but once it oxidized it was much better. She did great job of telling you exactly what she was doing and was very gentle.

@@DylanRomanov I was a bit concerned as well until i realized she might have been using the lighter foundation to take the place of having light concealer and to help with contouring. The way she blended it out, it just seemed that way to me

I feel like the Japanese culture (from what I experienced when I lived there) is all about the details. They don't skip shit whether working or in their every day lives. Everything they do is purposeful and has meaning.

For her first time doing makeup on a black woman, she did an excellent job. It can be a challenge even for myself to find the right foundation shade. The makeup was a great match and the overall look is very soft and natural looking. I love it.💄 ♥️

Gorgeous. What I love most is that she didn't hide any of her features, she simply enhanced her beauty. She's glowing! And the artist was lovely, I'm happy to see aestheticians that take not just the job seriously, but their commitment to bringing people joy.

She did an amazing job for her first time doing a black person’s makeup. That showed she cares versus some nonblack“makeup artists” who don’t even try and blame their mistakes on the client being black (as if we’re some nonhuman species).
The way she started with the neck rather than just directly on the face making the process seem so much less abrupt and intrusive

First of all I must say that you look beautiful with or without makeup. That being said, the make up artist did a great job highlighting your wonderful features. It looks fresh, it doesn’t look cheap and although you had to take your own makeup products, she did amazing with colors she not familiar with. My close cousin is dark skinned and even here in Brazil (more than half of people are black) she sometimes has a hard time trying to find a professional who doesn’t make her look like a clown, a ghost or a Drag Queen (her words, not mine). Japanese people are very professional. I’ll ask my cousin to watch your videos, maybe she can relate and even improve her insecurities. Loved everything about this video. ❤️❤️❤️

I wish that in the US we would have people of other races be this respectful and have this attention to detail when handling black clients. I recently got turned away by an African braiding salon staffed by all black women because I have 4c hair. Even in our own communities people discriminate against us so it’s nice to see that people in other countries where there are not even that many black people will look at you as a human and want to do a good job as with any other customer. I've recently been watching so many videos about the culture whether it be beauty, shopping or people staying in capsule hotels and I would love to experience it one day. When I studied fashion, I had a makeup artistry class. Our instructor was a celebrity/editorial makeup artist and he often told us to look at the mirror while doing someone’s makeup to see its entirety better and other reasons I forgot already 😂
If you go and watch old school makeup artists from Hollywood, they do it a lot.

As an illustrator I regularly look at my drawing in a mirror, because the reversed image will highlight any imbalances that my brain doesn’t notice from straight on. It’s funny, an image could look fabulous, but once I see it in reverse, all the areas that need work jump out at me from the different perspective. I’m guessing this could be part of the reason for looking in the mirror - using the flipped image to keep symmetry on track.
