You can buy the starter brushes as a seperate item , around £8 ( did a quick search online ) sometimes it's just accumulated dust from the brushes wearing down , I blew out / cleaned my FJ1200 starter once and it was fine for a good while , mind you that was after around 40 thousand miles or so . I'm on dinner break so gotta go / Pete
That sounds like a sticky starter solenoid. Starter motors are easy to take apart, it helps to do this periodically anyway as you'll get all the carbon out of it. Old Goldwings were notorious for it, I couldn't believe how much carbon fell out of mine. It was good as gold afterwards. Another good mod is to fit an extra earth wire from the starter housing.
Evening mate had no internet since Xmas until Friday all sorted now, in sept, changed out my Vespa px battery for another yuasa only the second in 14 years, and in Nov changed out the classic 350 for a yuasa as my classic is 2+ years old now with 9000km on the clock and I’ve heard that the OE battery is finished after a couple of years funny isn’t it how us bikers who have been riding decades have brand loyalty, 🤣 well I have anyway ! when you get round to doing the HNTR I hope it’s an easier job Than the classic, talk about frustrating 🤣🤣🤣🤣 starter motor sounds well lazy. ….. @@PeterHolland-mu7yn Hi Pete, I was always a big fan of yuasa batteries, but fell out of love with them when they started to be made in countries other than Japan, that seemed to reduce their quality. That battery out of the cub was a genuine Honda part (yuasa) I found a 2004 date mark on it so that’s an impressive service life! Let’s see how long the hntr lasts.. I’d certainly be disappointed with 2 years?! Cheers, Martin.
Afternoon mate, according to TH-cam several people have reported dud or lazy batteries within 2 years one failing completely on a ride, I’ve got a couple of tours coming up next year hopefully so wanted a good battery as didn’t want to be stuck up a mountain with a dead battery 🤣 was unaware of yuasa being made in other countries, ignorance is bliss 🤣 mine for the Vespa px n classic were under €45 each, which is not bad. Gone up a bit in the uk I’m led to believe 🥴
I feel your pain
Did the same yesterday on my himalayan 411
Get that starter motor sorted 👌 before it lets you down
Happy New Year Martin! You will sort your Cub ready for new adventures. Jan

I’ll pull it apart and have a look, luckily it starts easily with the kick start so not too worried about it.
Lots of things suddenly work better after a clean.
Your bike is in great condition for the age
@@Colin399 thanks Colin. I try and look after my bikes. 👍
@@MartinRivespeed I'd be interested to hear you talk about all of the bikes you have had across the years.
@ that would be long video… good idea though, I could do a back story to my biking history? Maybe in the next vlog time # series! X

Had electric start on my anf 125. Gave up with it as would start on kick start if looked at it
Shame I thought the new battery would’ve nailed the problem , never mind new starter motor it is
@@theslowwalkhome7314 yeah, I was a bit disappointed! A new genuine starter is no longer available, I can get one from Japan but will cost over £200…
@@MartinRivespeed You'll have to have a Car Boot!
Hi Martin, is that a Myford lathe on the bench ?..... I have a 1968 ML7.
@@NickHellings-zq8xt yes, it’s a super seven. Lovely bit of kit that gets used regularly.
