Glad I came across your video. I was getting mine and my wife's scooters that have gy6 ready to sell as we don't use them in the last few years, Mine was fine started right up, but her's just clicked, first thing I checked battery it it good, so I knew it had to be starter or solenoid (it kick starts fine though) and it had the same exact click as on your video. But with your guidance on checking the solenoid I found that to be the problem, I tapped it a little and the starter kind of went but not enough to start it. Glad you had this trouble shooting video for this particular problem and even though it clicks it still could be starter or solenoid as I found out. Thanks!
Thanks, just got my taotao 150cc out of winter storage. New oil. Gear oil, belt, variator rollers. Ready for the test ride and she won't fire up. I am sure it leads to the starter. The great thing is parts are so cheap you don't really have to diagnose. Just replace parts until you get it right. You can get a GY6 motor, brand new each spring for $300. I will be doing this sooner than later. I ride 7000 miles a year. That is a couple drive belts and 7 oil changes. No other maintenance required. Maybe an air filter. Then new motor next year.
Very good video! Thank you. I'm currently troubleshooting for my Honda CBR600RR. Got the dreaded "click" one day so I replaced the Relay Solenoid and still has issues. I can push start her consistently and ride for hours, and sometimes she'll start up the next day sometimes back to the click. The battery charges during riding and stays charged (rules out stator). I guess I could try testing the starter thanks to this!
First and foremost great video you don't know how much you save me it just happened to me the other day and I did it myself it took a little bit of time but now I got a bike that up and running you definitely got a new subscriber here
Darryl, Thank you so much! So happy that you were able to get your bike back up and running. People like yourself remind me that helping others is the only reason I started my channel. So welcome to the family!
Thanks for explaining in detail what those parts were and how they work and the different options for fixing it. Saved me 200 bucks man. Need that dough to eat and pay for tuition in the tech course.
Great explanation, I think perhaps though you should include trying to kick-start the scooter as part of the troubleshooting process after checking the voltage from the solenoid because the engine could be seized. That would cause the exact same symptoms.
iv'e only ever worked on 2 gy6's both starter's mounts were different than yours . also both motors brushes ''caked'' over armature contacts and needed just cleaning . however also discovered both would spin backwards making bendix useless due to brush wire shorting out on can . fixed by loosening screw glued in piece of rubber band between . And now i know what/how to check solenoid issue . thnx . Kachi's Kid
Kid thank you for your video thanks to your video I installed it my starter today and everything went so well thank you I've never seen her turn on so fast like she did soon as I installed it thank you again kip making video like this
Thanks for this video. I have a Znen Vista that the starter looks like it has quite a bunch of oil that came out of it. I'll definitely be buying a new one off Amazon as Well as a solenoid, just in case it has gone bad. I've had quite a few electrical issues with my bike. I'm just glad this looks to be easy that an idiot like me can fix. Lol. You saved me at least $400
No problem Erik. Make sure that you have a multimeter, it will help out tremendously on most electrical issues. Hmmmm, Znen's I hear are pretty reliable bikes, sorry you are having a problem with yours. If you have any questions, I will try to help, if I can.
I do have one concern... I did get my bike started using the kickstarter and noticed that the battery was at about a little more than half of what it usually is. Is it because it's not running off the solenoid or alternator? I did order a new starter and solenoid and hopefully it goes smoothly and I don't fuck it up.
@@erikpetrie637 I don't think you will mess it up. Do you have a battery tender? Our bikes don't really have an alternator, but it's a stator under your cooling fan that keeps the battery charged when the bike it running. The bike wouldn't even start it not connected to the solenoid and the stator. Take a reading off the battery with multimeter, before going for a ride... take a nice long ride if you can...measure the battery again, if the battery hasn't increased even a little, then you might need a new one.
@@kachiskid thank you again so much for this video. I just finished putting the new starter and solenoid on. It started right up. The thing you mentioned with the battery, it's still a little bit low but I think after I drive it a little bit it should go up. I've had the bike for a little over a year so the battery should still be okay I'm hoping. I'm just glad I was able to fix this problem by myself and not paid some overpriced shop in the Bay Area to fix it for an astronomical price.
Good job...forgot you have to ground starter body and not just run 12 volt jump wire to positive starter post....ain't my first rodeo on this but must have hit my head coming out of the shoot last time I did a outboard motor starter test..today its a vintage old cb175 in really good shape
Thank you very much, I have the same problem with my Suzuki Thunder 250 but I don't have a spare starter yet to try. But at least you made me believe that my starter may be bad even if it does work free on a battery outside of the engine. I was scared of thinking that I have something clogged in the engine however the engine starts very normal with the Kickstart. I hope there is a way to contact you personally to tell you what I did that led to this situation. Thank you very much in advance.
I Can relate to this video, my solenoid is clicking so I purchased a new one on Amazon, my friend also said for reference try using Sea Foam to clean any debris I may have in the gas while leaking, and Carburetor oil for the filter for compression. I'm gonna purchase a Starter for on hand just in case? And a Multimeter. Your video may have helped me solve the issue.
Yup, the Multimeter is the best purchase you can make. I'm sorry did you say that you have a gas leak? What is carb. oil? Do you have a Uni air filter or pod? That is the only thing I can think you would need oil for.
Yeah ! Fixed the little leakage where gas was escaping from the air pocket. Dirt and debris was probably building inside sitting the gas. Friend said try using Sea Foam to clean it up, its an Additive he said. And Carburetor spray to spray inside the hose to filter out gunk, he said it won't fix the problem, But it well make my Phantom scooter run better for days on in.
Great video, my starter is spinning in the case as well as all the gears behind the flywheel but the flywheel will not spin. The starter clutch/ one way bearing was locking up while spinning it by hand but no start with starter.
Mine spins freely one way but locks up the other way which is supposed to happen but I’m wondering if the strength of the starter compared to my hand is making it spin freely. Any ideas?
Been trouble shooting my scooter starting problem and being it has starter connection to switch and harness too coil and grounded to bike with direct current from battery from switch I'm gonna try to spin starter as you to see if starter work and if not I will go and break down on a purchase of starter .I'm almost sure switch and wire wires are good to batter and coil so it must be starter! Thanks for vide .
Great vid.. i honestly think u just had a corroded connection @ starter.. always a lil grease helps trmendously against corroded connections. I would have teasted the cable, then the positive stud on starter. But hey, its running... all is good.😊
Nice trouble shooting...My starter relay just clicks I have measured with my multi meter and get the same reading as you did. No change. I did remember testing the starter a few months back with 12 volts and like yours, it does spin. I am trying to locate a video which might cover the DF125
Man I appreciate it I have a DF50SST or what they call a venom X18. The battery is fine I replaced the fuse no crank spark plug is good too so I’m going to check and see if it’s the starter ,relay or solenoid. I know this vid is old but it’s still helpfull.
have the same problem with my yamaha, thought you might have talked about the cranking amps of the battery but very helpful especially as the original starter motor was spinning anyway, thanks
Quick question I got my scooter running. It kick start when it's cold but once I rode it for a while the thing doesn't wanna start back up. I changed the spark plug already
You need to check your carb., maybe needs to be cleaned? Make sure all your vacuum hoses have no cracks in them. Are you running a airbox or a pod filter? If an airbox, make sure it is connect securely to the carb. The bike started, so you are getting spark.
Airflow, change your airfilter..if its starts, ride for a while then die on stop signs or traffic lights..change your airfilter its too dirty to allow air in
Great information on this video, never had to replace starter yet on any of my scooters but I like to know what problem might show up some day! Thanks Frank
Why thank you Frank. I'm big into modifying, so you get use to starters needing to be upgraded. I was able to start the 171cc big bore, with a standard starter though.
Yes, I heard that you used standard starter on video, I remember years ago I watched your video on checking valve clearance and I've been doing it to my scooters every year nov/dec so they run the best when coldest weather arrives. Thanks!
So I have a GY6 150cc with a big bore kit taking it up to 171cc. Scooter Tuning wants $120 for a starter but I see other 150cc starters on Amazon for $20. Is there a difference? How do I know what to buy?? Your video is awesome and super easy to view. Thanks bro
Thank you. The $120 starter is most likely a high torque starter. Word on the street is anything over a 150cc (such as your 171cc, and above) need a high torque. I have one but only because I don't have a kick starter on my bike. Before changing it, my original starter didn't have a problem starting my bike. I didn't notice anything special with the high torque starter either.
@@aocleader I could recommend a whole bunch, 24, 26, or 28mm? Something cheap or expensive? Flat-slide, round-slide, PWK, or CVK? Normally I would increase size, if you increase size of the engine. Just a whole lot to that request.
The road side low tech way to test a solenoid is to turn on ignition & use an insulated screwdriver or jumper cable to connect both posts of the solenoid to see if starter engages,... If it does by forcing the bridge this way then the solenoid is bad :)
Thanks. This video was extremely helpful. Im having the same issue and just found out that my starter solenoid I’d bad. I’m going to replace it,but will a bad solenoid cause the bike to shut down while in motion and not be able to be push started?
@@Doflamingo11 yup, the test pretty much works for any bike. By no means am I a motorcycle pro but some bikes have the solenoid attached to the starter. I have seen many video's on that rectifier going out, so you are right...it one of them.
Great video, very well explained for a gearhead like myself whos skills fall short at electrical. My solenoid tested out fine testing it at the solenoid at stand still and while cranking. However I am getting less than 1 volt at the starter while attempting to start. Could this still be the solenoid?
Thank you. I don't think so, if the solenoid tested fine. Are you able to short the solenoid out and start it? Also check starter cable for any corrosion.
@@kachiskid Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I was able to try jumping the solenoid to no avail. I also checked the cables running from the solenoid to the starter and there didnt appear to be any corrosion or shorts. There is a connector at one point in the harness for these two wires and I did check voltage while starting at that point and it wasnt showing anything as well which tells me the issue has to be between this connector and the solenoid if its not the solenoid.
@@ZScherling yeah replace the solenoid. It should have sparked and attempted to start. Hook your multimeter to just the battery, when you hit the start button, what kind of voltage are you getting?

Because I wanted to find it and try to lubricate it!.......I'm confused can you please help me!!!
Do you think it could be your starter clutch? I have replaced mine twice, before going to an expensive Taida name brand. Does it sound like this, at the very start of this video? th-cam.com/video/RujjyNothfU/w-d-xo.html
Kachi's Kid well mine can start when I do that so I know the starter is good but now I don’t know what else to do as well as my kickstart gear is broken and super loose I was wondering if it’s fine if I take off the kickstart cuz it’s broken and I don’t need it as well as I was wondering if I have a wiring problem as when I bypass the starter relay it starts or do I need a new relay

at first i throught it was the solonoid but thats trying to do something when i bridged my screwdriver over the 2 bolts to get it to fire so looks like that is fine. im just wondering if the starter motor is really clogged up with oil as the bike was stood for like 6months but did fire up then stopped straight away with the click noise
thanks fot the video man...but i still dont understand why the faulty starter spinned when connected direct to the battery? i was hoping that if the starter is the problem then it wont run even when connected directly. Please help me with this
You know E, I thought the same thing. so this is my theory...The oil that got into the starter didn't allow it it to spin while on the bike. I would almost bet that when you hit the starter button your not getting a whole 12.6+ volts directly to the starter. When I had it connect to the jumper that is direct voltage with nothing in the way. It's gonna spin under that load as long as it isn't broken or jammed. I think the starter was just weak. You know when people hit their starters with a screwdriver and getting them to work kind of thing. Ain't nobody doing all that, when it can be replaced for cheap. Also I have a 171cc engine, I'm suppose to have a high torque starter..
My Start Stop switch doesn't do anything. No clicking noise. New battery; new solenoid. Electrick Shifter button doesn't work either. But head lights do. What could be causing this???
thank u very much that is the problem am sitting on right now but i hv found that the negative solenoid is not giving out voltage but its new one i bought could it be faulty or wat plz help
Kachi's Kid yes i dd that it shows around 0.6 voltage out to the starter but the battery is 13 volt and it clicks only. does it affects also the sparking of plug
@@anonymousautos1317 Nope, no spark is a whole other problem. Is the starter grounded to the bike? Do you have another starter to swap out? Disconnect the starter from the solenoid and measure the neg. side again, when attempting to start the bike.
Mine spins when jumped, but when reconnecting to my atv It would work for 2-3 sec cranking then go back to just clicking on the solenoid (tried a new one too). After that I cleaned the wire from solenoid to starter and now it came white smoke from it. Wire is a lill too short imo etc. Maybe I need a new wire as it seemed twisted a lot
Aye man I really need some help with my taotao atv I know the same principles apply from this video since it’s basically the same wiring. So my question was I don’t know if my starter solenoid is bad since I got my readings 10 volts from battery and the positive side the same 10 volts but when I try starting it it won’t crank all I get is a clicking and I only get 2 volts from the other tower (negative side) of the solenoid but when I jump the battery it starts right up I don’t know if it’s my battery that needs a charge or if the solenoid is bad since I think the 2 volts are way to low of a reading from the negative side but any suggestions thank you
No problem, when you measure your battery alone, what is the voltage? We need at least 12.6 or above. 2 volts doesn't seem quite right, as you know. If your battery is good, yes I would change out the solenoid. Always good to have a backup just in case.
@@kachiskid when I measured just the battery alone the reading was about 10.5 volts but the negative side of the starter solenoid only gives about 2 volts when trying to start it I will try charging the battery out of the quad and if it the solenoid still gives 2 volts then I will replace it but hopefully it is just the battery needing a charge
@@kachiskid I have charged my battery and checked the volt readings after a full charge and I am getting enough volts to the starter and it started right up the first time but my starter is making a weird grinding noise like if it’s getting stuck and won’t crank when it does that so I might have to end up replacing it but thank you man I really appreciate the help
Hey! I have some light smoke coming from my engine...I'm not sure if maybe a gasket was blown or if there's something wrong with the coolant. Seems the bike was leaking some oil. There was no visible "gooey" stuff like you get when water is mixed with the oil. It was very dark in color and smelt like it was burnt. I went home immediately when I knew the bike had some white smoke emitting from inside the engine (could've been a little gray, there wasn't enough for me to tell). The bike has been running awesome since I fixed up the starter so my question is, should I take the engine off the bike and inspect it? What should I be looking for to diagnose the problem? This one is definitely a doosey
Ally, if I remember correctly you have a 250cc. Ok, no need to panic, 1st take the cooling cover off and then run the bike to really check for leaks, if you have to ride it down the street and back with the cover off. It's best if you can tell exactly where the smoke is emitting from. Don't try to hit 70 going down the street but do get it up to cruising speed. As long as you didn't hear a loud pop or grinding, I think it will be something like a gasket, or even a vacuum line possibly. Did you lose any compression on the ride home?
Hey man nice vid, so the ground that is connected to the frame goes where? It’s the ground that connects with battery negative on the Frame , where does it connect to?

nice vid showing diagnostic procedures, however they did'nt yield any information. Hung a starter and it worked. But we dont know why. But i digress, parts for these are stupid cheap and you can totally throw parts at them until they work again. An amp draw on the starter wold be great, youre little power pack, im sure produces much more power than the stocker battery. Wonder is the starter had a shorted winding, similar to an automotive failure that causes the illusion of a bad battery.

Hey kid I have a 05 kymco venox 250 motorcycle.my first bike..the engine cranks no start..I am not getting any sparks ..could it be the ingtion coils ...
Hey Frank, I had to look this one up. But this is what I found with a no spark situation on this bike. Possible failure of the ignition unit. you need to trace the voltage to the coil, the trigger voltage if absent then the ignition system is defective. Check the input and also the 12 volt to the coil , if coil is heating it can be faulty.
I buy a second use scooter cy6 and it doesnt even make click sound, after chaning my battery everything works but only not the eletric starter it doesnt even make click sounds....???
Yes, the other thing that can go bad in this situation is the button is burned out. You need to check you starter button wiring and replace if necessary. I knew that wasn't my problem, but did check before starting filming this video. Does the bike start with the kick starter?

Thanks for explaining in detail what those parts were and how they work and the different options for fixing it. Saved me 200 bucks man. Need that dough to eat and pay for tuition in the tech course.

Most excellent dude no more going to over priced shops anymore or depending on any friends!
Yeah no problem, soon I will drop my "no spark" video. That was just part 1 of my "solved series".
Great explanation, I think perhaps though you should include trying to kick-start the scooter as part of the troubleshooting process after checking the voltage from the solenoid because the engine could be seized. That would cause the exact same symptoms.
Yes sir. My kickstarter was broken out of the gate. My bike is famous for not having one. I always suggest to others with a kickstarter as you did.
Thx man, i hope you did show us how to test the selenoid.

Love hearing that. Helping out 6 years and counting.
iv'e only ever worked on 2 gy6's both starter's mounts were different than yours . also both motors brushes ''caked'' over armature contacts and needed just cleaning . however also discovered both would spin backwards making bendix useless due to brush wire shorting out on can . fixed by loosening screw glued in piece of rubber band between . And now i know what/how to check solenoid issue . thnx . Kachi's Kid

I found your video extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. May I ask you a question or two? Please
Yes, absolutely
This was the best. You covered everything and no wasted time. Thanks
Thank you, and no problem.

Glad it helped!
Good job...forgot you have to ground starter body and not just run 12 volt jump wire to positive starter post....ain't my first rodeo on this but must have hit my head coming out of the shoot last time I did a outboard motor starter test..today its a vintage old cb175 in really good shape
Thank you, to tell you the truth, I did the same thing....it took about half a day for me to figure it out.
I hope there is a way to contact you personally to tell you what I did that led to this situation.

this is exactly the video i needed! thank you!
That is exactly what I like to hear. We both win!
Another potentially helpful tip, check the starter bendix and the starting gear or "pulley" with the teeth the bendix matches to turn the engine over.
Good tip.
@@kachiskid thanks

Great video, my starter is spinning in the case as well as all the gears behind the flywheel but the flywheel will not spin. The starter clutch/ one way bearing was locking up while spinning it by hand but no start with starter.
Thank you, hopefully you will be able to fix your issue. I have had to replace my starter clutch twice.
Before replacing your starter clutch, we’re u able to spin it both ways or would it lock up for you? Im having trouble diagnosing the issue 😕
Mine spins freely one way but locks up the other way which is supposed to happen but I’m wondering if the strength of the starter compared to my hand is making it spin freely. Any ideas?
@@kltwizler not actually clear on your issue? Is the solenoid just clicking or will your bike not start because of the starter clutch not moving?

Quick question I got my scooter running. It kick start when it's cold but once I rode it for a while the thing doesn't wanna start back up. I changed the spark plug already
You need to check your carb., maybe needs to be cleaned? Make sure all your vacuum hoses have no cracks in them. Are you running a airbox or a pod filter? If an airbox, make sure it is connect securely to the carb. The bike started, so you are getting spark.
Airflow, change your airfilter..if its starts, ride for a while then die on stop signs or traffic lights..change your airfilter its too dirty to allow air in

The road side low tech way to test a solenoid is to turn on ignition & use an insulated screwdriver or jumper cable to connect both posts of the solenoid to see if starter engages,... If it does by forcing the bridge this way then the solenoid is bad :)

There is a connector at one point in the harness for these two wires and I did check voltage while starting at that point and it wasnt showing anything as well which tells me the issue has to be between this connector and the solenoid if its not the solenoid.

at first i throught it was the solonoid but thats trying to do something when i bridged my screwdriver over the 2 bolts to get it to fire so looks like that is fine. im just wondering if the starter motor is really clogged up with oil as the bike was stood for like 6months but did fire up then stopped straight away with the click noise
Make sure all your contact points are all clear of corrosion.
Excellent step by step explanation. Thank you.
You are welcome!
thanks fot the video man...but i still dont understand why the faulty starter spinned when connected direct to the battery?
i was hoping that if the starter is the problem then it wont run even when connected directly.
Very rarely the switch goes bad, but it does happen. Do you have a kick starter on the bike?
Need to have a look at mine

@@anonymousautos1317 and you know you have to measure it by attempting to start the bike, right? Just like in the video?
Kachi's Kid yes i dd that it shows around 0.6 voltage out to the starter but the battery is 13 volt and it clicks only. does it affects also the sparking of plug
@@anonymousautos1317 Nope, no spark is a whole other problem. Is the starter grounded to the bike? Do you have another starter to swap out? Disconnect the starter from the solenoid and measure the neg. side again, when attempting to start the bike.

Hey! I have some light smoke coming from my engine...I'm not sure if maybe a gasket was blown or if there's something wrong with the coolant. Seems the bike was leaking some oil.
Thank you sir
No problem.
Hey man nice vid, so the ground that is connected to the frame goes where? It’s the ground that connects with battery negative on the Frame , where does it connect to?
Thank you. The ground on the frame connects to the Cylinder head valve cover.
Thank you
No problem Victor!
Us Chinese scooter owners can never have to many spare parts. LOL Salute 😎
Got that right.
@@kachiskid did you get the pics I sent of the scooter together? & another question did you need set your idol up when you first got yours together. Salute 😎
When did you send the pics? Did you send to my email? This weekend got really busy. Yeah, I had to turn the idle up on mine too...just keep it between 2000 and 2600 rpm's. Do you have a tach. on yours?
@@kachiskid yeah I sent to your email & that is a negative on the tack ! I bought a digital cluster that's got all that plus temp & voltage. See if I can actually get it work on mine first since the bones of the scooters are about the same, I give you a link .
nice vid showing diagnostic procedures, however they did'nt yield any information.
Well sorry you found it didn't yield any info....for you. Whatever the case, this video has helped countless others save money, and get their bike on the road. Maybe you could produce a better video. Either way my bike was repaired that day, and has never had the same problem since so....
@@kachiskid didn't mean disrespect. But like I said in my comment, we just don't know why. I happy it was an easy fix and it continues to perform as expected.
Really sorry Spencer, I have been under a lot of pressure in my personal, and professional life, and didn't speak to you right in that comment. I am currently attempting to complete a video that I started 3 days ago, but due to rancid weather will hopefully complete this morning. I sincerely apologize!
I have the same problem, I’ve checked all the connections, I’ve changed the starter relay, when I take out from the engine the motor starter is spinning, when I’m putting it back it doesn’t move
Any ideas what could be the problem?
My motorcycle is a Yamaha virago 535 94’
Make sure there are no corrosion on any connections. Did you try another starter motor?
@@kachiskid I’ve checked the connections, everything seems to be fine, I find it very wired because is the starter motor is spinning when is outside the engine and when I place it back it doesn’t make any sound wich makes me think the starter is not the problem, I believe it would make a sound trying to spin when in inside the engine
Hey kid I have a 05 kymco venox 250 motorcycle.my first bike..the engine cranks no start..I am not getting any sparks ..could it be the ingtion coils
...
I have a question if the starter. Begins to go bad with that. Cause your scooter to shake and buck and Lose power And shut off.
No, starter has nothing to do with your power. Sounds electrical. Shaking sounds like rollers, and your clutch need to be checked.
