Whats the final thoughts on these ICON Wrenches? With what information we have are they worth it or no? My answer is in the comments.

With just the testing I have done they do seem to be of good quality and I can't wait to try these wrenches out over a long period of time to give you my final answer but right now I think if you wanted to spend that much then they are worth the risk. I think they will pan out in the end.

Why worry the Icon wrenches are lifetime warranty just like Snapon so if it's damaged take it back get a new one and have you tested them on multiple fasteners made of different materials also The Humble Mechanic was given a Icon Tool cabinet setup with hutch to test out and a strut bracket broke he called and they overnighted replacement parts and included the strut bracket for the other side so that's how they are handling the warranty

I'm a heavy diesel tech who works on five to six trucks (for various repairs) daily. I still have my Craftsman Pro wrenches but have been completely put off on the fact that I recently tried to warranty one and was basically turned away. Now I do have some of the tool truck brands (Snap-On, Mac, Cornwell etc) but I have noticed recently that many of these brands are made overseas. Now if I am going to invest my money in something that is going to pay our house note it needs to be worth it. I love what you are doing with the Icon videos for two reasons. 1. You are straight forward and honest about your opinion (that honesty is something we need nowadays). 2. You ARE NOT ADVERTISING FOR HARBOR FREIGHT. I personally will pick up a set of the Icon wrenches (with the large wrench add on set) and putting my beloved Craftsman wrenches in the next yard sale for a buck each! Hopefully they work as expected and when one breaks, I'll drive two minutes down the street and swap it out. Keep doing what your doing. "Charlie Mike"

They definitely will and have stood the test of time but i feel like function similar to snap on with a lifetime warranty is really good. Even if the wrench didnt last forever i can just go trade it in lol. But that definitely is a big part about the snap on brand they are good tools.

@Chad Wilkins I see what you are saying. But I've pretty much used them non stop this whole time and I have never broken or damaged one. I also have some of my grandfather's tools that have also been used a long time. I think as long as you take care of them they all will last. I plan on passing mine and my grandfather's tools to my son.

I was always the fugal mechanic, I had the opportunity over the years to go on the Snap-on truck and I did buy tools from the truck but it was always limited to normally a single socket, wrench whatever I needed. I had a full set of Bonney hand tools and never really needed to buy much more. I could do everything I needed with the tools at hand that I got over 35 years ago. Now that I retired there are a few tools I like to get and that is mainly the long reach SAE and metric ratcheting wrenches. Everything else I have it and don't need it. I saw a lot of guys going out and paying the truck driver and buying more tools I never did that I saved up and bought the entire set cash and kept doing that my entire career. Now retired I do enjoy these videos as they show that maybe the Icon will be good enough quality to do the job and it most likely easily do it for me.

At the end of the day in my opinion the gearwrench the icon and the snapon all did great. If a wrench gets damaged you have warranty. I don't think anyone's going to put a three and a half foot bar on a wrench and expect it to survive, it is far more abuse then the wrenches are intended to endure. I will save the $305 and buy the icon.

I was all over the "non-slip" open end thing a couple years ago and jumped on a full set of Carlyle metric and Milwaukee SAE and metric. I noticed right away, at least on the smaller Carlye ones, that the "teeth" would get wiped out. A specific example is the 10 mm on the axle adjuster lock nut on a dirt bike. The Milwaukee ones fit tight on the open end, too tight in some cases. I also scrounged a Wright Grip SAE set off eBay. Those are the best in my opinion. I really like them and they seem to hold up very well. Not the shiny chrome of the others mentioned but chrome doesn't cause the bolt to break loose.

Guy Connell that’s really funny guy I bought the Milwaukee’s and I also scored new Wright metric and sae sets off market place. I got both Wright sets new unused for 100 bucks. The Wright are far far better than the Milwaukee’s. The Milwaukee’s teeth are soft like these icons. I tore up my 19 3rd time use. My Wright’s are perfect no issues also I have the satin chrome I prefer it. 👍🏼👍🏼 I have used the wrights and saved rusty brake lines multiple times. If I need to use a wrench that I know isn’t going to fail I grab the wrights.

Looked like you had to apply more torque to the icon then the snapon to cause the jaws to start spreading. To me if the jaws spread easier on the snapon then it is also easier to round off a bolt or nut. And if the jaws are stiffer then your more likely to turn the nut or bolt before rounding the head like the Icon appeared to do.

And you need to consider is those cheaper wrenches like icon and gear wrench will strip fasteners,, Not all the time or ever time But sooner then later they will as you use them. Then it will cost you time and money and in the end it’ll cost you your job if you don’t won’t upgrade.

The thing that really sucks about tool truck brands, (all of them) beyond the price, is that the warranty is limited strictly to the original buyer of the tool. That is clearly posted on each of their web sites. You may get lucky and find a truck dealer who is willing to warranty a second hand tool, but that is strictly their own decision, and they are not obligated by the company they work for, to do that for you. If I were to buy your used Icon wrench, ratchet, socket, etc, and then break it, I can take it to Harbor Freight and get a brand new one in exchange, now questions asked. Tool truck dealers may or may not be able to make it out to you for warranty service same day, and if you have to buy Snapon or other truck brands online, you have no choice but to do warranty claims through the USPS. The tool trucks will also try to rebuild your broken tool before replacing it, and now that Stanley B&D owns Crapsman, they will give you a refurbished tool that could have cosmetic damage, or someone else's name engraved into it before they give you a new one. And I believe that if Crapsman has to give you a new tool in exchange, it gets done through the USPS, and not any retail store.

I appreciate that brother and the new Crafstman I dont know a whole lot about but what I do know they seem decent. If I personally were shopping between the 2 I would choose ICON I feel they are cheaper or close in price and I prefer Harbor Freight's warranty is better amd I think the ICON tools are better. Just me personally though so I am not recommending them simply because I did receive the ICON tools for free so I dont want anyone to think I misled them.

I bought the four piece large SAE set for 74.99 I used the the 1-1/8 pretty much all day I am happy with the wrenches. The only thing I can say bad is I thought I was getting a sturdy plastic wrench holder and it felt that way in the box . Once you take it out is just thin flimsy plastic reinforced by cardboard. How much extra would a solid plastic tray have been? Just saying.

Snap-on doesn't sell to the general public because they have franchises which would mean that they would be screwing their own distributors it's the same as if the harbor frights manufactures sold there products to the general public undercutting HF.

The franchisees would still continue to go to the shops so why not offer the same deals to the general public that the franchisee doesnt sell to anyway so it wouldnt take money from them unless they were to offer better deals and most people in shops would stay with the franchisee because they offer them service and a truck account so i really feel like they should offer their deals online to everyone. Actually I found Wright wrenches and Snap-on to be of similar quality. With Wright you pay under half the price for a 15 piece set compared to Snap-on Im not paying over 400 bucks for combination wrenches, when you can buy something of the same quality for $180 for Wright metrics 7-21mm and for SAE 1/4" to 1and 1/8" for $230 I believe Snap-on has a 10 piece set 8-19mm for just over $400 yup it's a no brainer, the wright will do the same thing.

The reason Snap On doesn’t discount tools online is because they are supporting their dealer network. Why would someone invest in a business if they’re product supplier was going to undercut their sales online? People criticize Snap On and compare prices but they do provide very high quality tools at the workplace, and keep in mind even if you paid full price on the tool truck, your usually gonna pay $25 a week at zero interest. Is it smart to always buy snap on. Probably not, but as an old timer once told me “yes craftsman will warranty that ratchet when it breaks, but your not getting paid when you warranty it, and they don’t put the skin back on your busted knuckles”. Also dirtbags skip out on their tool truck bills all the time. Every time a tool dealer extends truck credit to a tech they are taking a risk, and have to trust that the guy is going to pay the for the product that they already paid for out of pocket. Even if they do pay but don’t pay every week like agreed, if the tool dealer says anything and pisses the guy off then he goes into the shop and tell all his buddies that the tool truck guy is a jerk for expecting to get paid then you run the risk of pissing off the whole shop!

    • @RedemptionGarage
      @RedemptionGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Okay i get that and i agree with you on a lot of points but them discounting their tools online wouldnt hurt the driver because the people who would buy online arent even getting on a tool truck. So them discounting as long as it was the same as their normal prices wouldnt make me stop buying tools from a driver and give up the service and the credit. So how does them selling their tools at the normal sale price every month effect the driver when it would only attract the people who dont have a tool truck come to their shop? As long as the prices are the same. And a lot of snap on drivers are not even franchisees so we cant forget that part. Thanks for your input Bryan and for watching I appreciate you.

Redemption Garage I see what you’re saying and I’m not necessarily disagreeing, I’m just saying what their policy is and their reasoning behind it. The dealers tend to look at it from an old school perspective that the exclusivity and one on one interaction with the tool dealer is part of the “snap on brand” also they resent the fact that as small business owners they cannot do things like sell on line, sell from a store front, they cannot even service long time customers that have moved to a different area and are not getting served by that areas dealer for whatever reason but then snap on corporate comes in over top of the and sells whenever and wherever. Agreed it is an older system based on a pre internet way of business. I don’t know if I’m the future any of the tool truck brands will be able to sustain this model. I’m not saying that it’s set up right just that for some it’s not set up as wrong as it might appear. I’ve turned wrenches for about 30 years and I’ve seen it evolve. My “core” tools are mostly snap on but I’ve bought other stuff for roadside service etc. it doesn’t hurt near as much if you lose a socket or wrench when in a hurry trying to get a vehicle back up and running from a breakdown. But nowadays with the tool prices I don’t know that I would have bought as much snap on etc. the sad part is a lot of people from tool truck guys to factory workers make good living wages and support families working for snap on and that’s not a bad thing. I’ve always held the belief that if I’m making good money than I don’t mind if others are too. It’s part of a social relationship. The problem is people’s earnings aren’t keeping up and so the look for alternatives. If mechanics were getting paid what they are worth the market would be filled with lower priced alternatives. Anyway that’s my soapbox rant keep up the good work. I like your no nonsense approach to videos

Teeth on most brands wear out quicker than the snapon version.. in my experience that is. Redemption Garage I guess what bugs me, about the whole icon deal.. why the marketing pitch of a cheaper alternative to snap on. So many wrenches out there, not many if any, market themselves as a cheaper alternative to any other specific brand.. the marketing strategy is as if, we the consumers are stupid and don’t know there are multiple alternatives. It’s not just snapon or nothing.. no, There’s a lot of other good brands out there , and anyone buying snapon knows that. Nobody buys snapon because they couldn’t find a good affordable alternative, they buy it’s because it has the Gucci handbag effect, and it is likely to be the very best on the market.. otherwise, they would go out of business.. snapon targets the professional tier, if they started selling stuff at Walmart, they’d lose their ass. (Even though that’s bringing them into more customers) a lot of it comes down to branding, we all know this. To make your brand worth more, you can’t sell it cheap first of all..

@@goinhot9133 they have been doing that for years now and i get what you're saying but i think its pretty brave and smart to do it just because of if anything the buzz it generates. And Snap On and all tool truck tools are just too expensive man for a lot of people. Granted they are quality and they should be expensive but the guy who is starting out and the average guy who wants quality and wants to have the snap on tools but cant afford them will now shoot for the tool closest to them that they believe is closest which is the main reason i think they are doing it. Are these wrenches as good as my snap on set no but for the price i would go with the cheaper option at this point in my life. Snap-on has a sales agreement with the Truck franchises that prevents Snap-On online from selling their tools for anything less than msrp price. There are a few companies that do this with retailers including Stihl chainsaws. It basically keeps them from undercutting their own sales force.
