    Do you prefer the bite on wrenches or a smooth opening? My answer is in the comments.

      They both have their place but for maximum gripping capability then snap on has one of the best.

      Depends on aesthetics of the fastener. Bite open ends are not something I would care to use on chromed out engines. Or maybe some exotic Z06 Vette that gets spit polished detailed inside and out by the owner...LOL.

    Based on your video, I would buy the Icon before the Snap On, big savings for similar quality and even it it breaks, just go to your local Harbor Freight store and exchange for new one. Nice job showing the difference between the brands!

      At one point life i owned somewhere north of 120,000 dollars worth of Snap-On tools, they got stolen from me. Now I own a decent set of the Icon tools. I feel that they are decent tools for the price. I still have a few things that I but from Snap-On, like pliers and side cutters, allen wrenches. But for the most part it's all Icon

    Worked for sears durring early 80's, went from tires to batterys to installing got snap on then. With modest snap on boxes. Job put me through college to be a nurse, got married had 5 kids that lost all my tools along the way. KIDS! End of this month ordering a 73" us general box and filling it with icon tools I'M sure they'll do ok for what I do at home.

    I think you have me sold on the $99 Icon set. Especially where you chucked the box end to a rusted frame bolt and struck the wrench with a hammer. I assume you used a grade 8 bolt in the vise test. Impressive. Hope to see long patterns and offset double box ends in the near future. Practically all of my metric stuff is the cheap stuff and I want to upgrade. Will be painless for the prices they are asking.

    Just counted my wrench sets - 12 including stubbies and ratcheting. Some are older US Kobalt, some x-long Napa (they aren't really extra long), a couple of Proto sets, GW ratcheting, and of course the ubiquitous US raised panel Craftsman. Doubt that I spent more than $300 for everything. All purchased new. As such, a $100+ Icon set, for me, is bordering on the ridiculous.
    On a strictly personal note, I obviously pay very little for quality tools. It's not hard to do. For example, each of my 1/2" SK ratchets cost less than $20 to my door. Just need to be focused, know what you want, and wait for the right deal. Visiting forums helps to find these deals. Hell, I bought a XP120 set brand new from CL for a song. I understand that a professional may need the tool immediately. Fair enough. But every tool? It kills me to see guys who are not millionaires spend a large portion of their income on tools they could have had at a much lower price. It's a self-imposed tax.

Wright 3/4 ratchet and 16 3/4 sockets that go up to 2-3/8 for 75 bucks. All my dual 80’s bought used cheap. Bought a Matco stubby 3/8 at a yard sale for 5 bucks 88 tooth. I like you buy cheap and I agree you don’t have to spend tons of money on quality stuff buy used.

    You get the biggest and best bang for your buck with gearwrench, just bought the 44 piece set both metric and SAE without skipping sizes set for $214 with tax, the metric goes from 6mm to 32mm, I don't know what sizes are the SAE I'll have to recheck and they're the non slip kind too. Same goes for the Milwaukee maxbite wrenches a good bang for your buck as well, goes up to 22mm. The metric goes for $100 on Amazon last time I checked. ICON may want to adjust their price just a bit seeing that there's other better deals out there.

      @@RedemptionGarage I am a fan of Snap-on and own a few of their hand tools like wrenches, sockets, ratchets etc. Most are actually old/vintage from about mid 1940s - 1990s. However I'm a bigger fan of righteousness and honesty. To me it makes no sense that the Gearwrench slipped and then the bolt broke.
      I believe Gearwrench held fast and broke the bolt. Then the leftover force threw the bolt end away. Somewhere... over there, I guess... If it were my garage it would end up under something that is very heavy or impossible to move. : ) Interesting testing. Those close-ups really helped show the grip that the wrenches have on the fastener. Cool to see Snap-on and Icon dig in. Thanks.

    I noticed a shit load of negativity surrounding Icon videos on numerous channels and figured I’d leave my 2¢ on your video. Warning: Rant......
    I am speaking for myself (although I think a majority of people feel the same). I only watch a few channels on YT and I notice some commenters also frequent the same channels I do. We click on these videos out of curiosity because either, we are in the market for tools or we just want to see what’s new on the market. So these channels make videos on the very tools we are interested in learning about and people leave negative comments about making the videos. WTF? I can’t understand how someone clicks on a tool video knowing what they are about to see, then complain about seeing it. 🤔 I see people complain about lighting, audio, vocabulary and practices used in making videos but they still decide to click on the videos just to complain in the comment section. Does anyone click on a Redemption Garage or Client Graphics video expecting these dudes to make a fucking cake? They are giving us the content we subscribed to see. I don’t agree with every video these guys make and sometimes I have a different opinion than theirs, but I support the channel because they are producing the content that I enjoy. Some of you people need to step back and take a long look at yourselves. I honestly feel some of you fuckers are jealous that some of these channels received compensated products. I’m sure if you had a YT channel that focused on tools and had 10K+ followers you might get some comp’d merchandise for your viewing pleasure as well. I would think most of us are grown men that dabble in trades that require us to get dirty with tools so I have a hard time understanding these Soy Latte chugging keyboard warriors. For fucks sake please stop crying over stupid shit and enjoy the tool reviews or find Martha Stewart’s channel and knock yourself out sewing sweaters.

    Headline of this video should be,
    "Do you need to spend 500 dollars on some wrenches to get quality tools? Answer, NO!"
    In the end are you overpaying for Snap-On wrenches... yes and no. Theres a lot of variables, yes in the fact that you can get a bigger set of wrenches for 1/5 the price and they're quality and come with a lifetime warrenty and can do everything that the snap-on can do for that price. No.. in that some people value a USA made product and the best of the best regardless of price. While both the snap-on and Icon have great quality and finish, Snap-on will be better. A sizable and significant difference? No. But a difference nontheless.

    A few observations. 1 comparing a older snap on wrench with years Of use bs a new icon tool. Proof is not a one time test but how they hold up year after year of use. 2. Finish on icon appeared to be rough after just 1 use. .
    3 although a good value for the money, over time I would say the snap on will be the better value as they hold up and still have a value after 10 years. It’s easy to resell snap on tools but have you ever heard someone searching for used harbor freight tools? They are getting much better and that’s commendable.

    • @RedemptionGarage
      @RedemptionGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats true as far as resale value i dont buy tools to sell them i buy them to use them with a lifetime warranty i dont care about the finish or about how well they hold up 10 years down the road because i can always drive down and get a brand new one while i understand what you are saying i am not so much worried about anything but functionality and good quality. I don't need the best if the best costs 4 times the cost of good tools that work just the same especially when i can rest easy that this tool will be replaced with a new one at any time. Can i rest easy about these tools? Thats another topic lol. Thanks for your input John

    So I need a set of metric wrenches for my garage at home. I also need a torque wrench, all for DIY home use. For the same price as one ICON wrench set I can get a 15 piece no skips and a 1/2 inch drive manual torque wrench from Tekton, is me saving money worth it? Or should I just go down to harbor freight and pick up some icon gear?

    • @RedemptionGarage
      @RedemptionGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man thats going to be a personal preference I haven't used the Tekton wrenches to be able to tell you one is better than the other. If you are just using them for home use then I would tell you to buy the Tekton wrenches because you can get the metric and standard set both for a great price. As far as quality goes I can't tell you right now. Now when it comes to torque wrenches if you are going to be using it for more than a few uses then I would recommend that you spend more on that versus saving money. The ICON torque wrench at $99.99 is a grear value. I have used the Tekton torque wrenches and they are good for a few uses and they suck after that. With that being said if you want my honest opinion then buy a digital torque wrench ( a quality digital torque wrench) because you really need to be able to turn in degrees as well as ft-lb measurements. You can wait and buy both but to save money I would buy just a digital torque wrench. I don't know if ICON is coming out with one or not. Precision and specialty tools in my opinion should not be skimped on if you plan on using them over an extended period of time. I hope this helps.

      @@RedemptionGarage So does the mechanism fail or fall far out of tolerances?

    • @RedemptionGarage
      @RedemptionGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every torque wrench needs to be recalibrated my matco digital torque wrench is supposed to be recalibrated every year but the tekton i used lasted 2 uses and was way off so i will never use it again. If the icon torque wrench is a lifetime warranty then that is a big deal because you can just get a new one and im not sure if they are going to offer some kind of recalibration service or not. But that is something to keep in mind if you need your torque to be correct. But it also depends on what you use it for as well. I was building engines and needed mine to be good but if you are just doing things that just need to be close or in the ball park then its not a huge deal

      That’s really nice that they didn’t increase the prices on the no slip grip wrenches, I’ve been wanting a set of no slip grip or flank drive for a long time but I really need on up through larger sizes and I’ve asked some of the guys if they will have those and I was told yes seeing that the tolerances on those from your part 1 video are so tight I’m sold. Hopefully they release the finishing set soon thanks man appreciate your videos and responses

    What's your favorite style of wrenches? Open end with a non reversible ratcheting end is my go to

      I think they all have their place but i honestly find myself reaching for the snap on set i am using here I am comfortable with them and trust them completely. If i have to apply a lot of torque then i like the box end of the non reversible ratcheting wrenches but for general use i like using my matco reversible ratcheting wrenches. I really want to check the icon ratcheting wrenches out because while i wouldnt get rid of my snap on i may comsider getting rid of the matco set because while they are nice i honestly dont think they are anything special. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question brother.

      @@RedemptionGarage icons tools are looking good! Your socket video convinced me to return some deep and shallow snapon i just ordered for the icon ones. $35-40 for some pro quality snapon on replicas? Dont mind if I do! If it doesn't go well I'll bust out the flank drive xtras and go back to the snap on sockets. Worth a try for the price point. Thank you for all you do brother. For real lol
      The flank drive xtra has a tight fit.. really meant as a last resort socket...feels like I spent 3x as much for a nut extractor set lol

    If I had the money I would buy Snap-on, MAC, Proto ect. Since I don't I have to settle for Asian made tools. I try to buy anything made in Japan first. The next is Taiwan. The very last is Chinese. If a 10mm 12 point socket cracks or galls trying to remove a cap screw from a BMW engine you know it's garbage. So if that brand of socket cracks or galls then you can pretty well figure the rest of their line of tools suck. Screw the life time warranty.
