Rare for RN Hellcats to get into contact with the Luftwaffe so that's an interesting matchup. Is this map supposed to be Norway? I'm guessing not but in that case i'm not sure where you are. Can't be France surely?
Anyway, an idea if interested: When I first got IL-2 forgotten battles I flew the TB-3 which I had never heard of, quite a bit. The TB-3 is an old classic soviet bomber of the game that is largely well, forgotten. You know the one, slow, four engines and open cockpit with 3-4 gunners and a guaranteed death for the crew if you nose over on landing and eject (a neat pile of bodies iirc lol).
With this in mind, consider building a mission around the winter war with Finland, where you and the fishyyy crew must try to bomb Helsinki while fending off pesky finnish Fokker XXI's and Gladiators. In theory it could be a blast. The only risk I see here is that the flight may be too long and/or boring as the plane is sloooooooow. But you do get fire extinguishers and the ability to shoot your fellow gunners in the head if they don't behave.

You might be right, the royal navy did have one of their carries in the Atlantic for them to launch one of their sword fish torpedo bombers against German ships but, I'm not sure if there was any mention of Martlets aka wildcats or Hellcats I could be wrong though.

Fleet air arm Hellcats were also used in south of france during Provence landing. They comes from HMS Emperor squadron 800 ;
US navy used Hellcats at same place with VOF_1 USS Tulagi CVE72
Damn the Hellcat does not care for the MK-108 at all !.....;) and the wing pods were a bit of a surprise, in a dog fight scenario.

The hellcat was no match for the Messerschmitt. The german plane had greater speed , turning ability and dived faster.
Not sure about that. Not with those draggy 20 mm cannon pods under the wings. And the Hellcat could definitely dive faster, being stronger and heavier.
At least not in video games. At that time of the war US Navy pilots would have slaughtered the 109's.
@@timonsolus no the mesderschnitt was a great diver and plenty strong. The hellcat lacked the supercharger that the T bolt had to fight at high altitude, the Me was fuel injected and had no such weakness. Many dont realize the T bolt and Hellcat had the same engine, The magnifacent PRATT &WHITNEY R2800 DOUBLE WASP RADIAL.
Hi Fishyy. I´m also an Il2 46 long time player and MB. How do you think about the old talk of the german types being slower in the game than they should be? BAT developers say they corrected several flight models - sorry i know you´r not a BAT fan - and indeed trying out the P-47 in BAT i find it much better than the YP version - i believe YP flight models are basically the stock ones - and the same applies for the 109 G and K series, they feel faster and with better rate of climb in BAT. Only the stutter effects are somehow better in YP, warning you the plane is about to stall, before it really does.
Anyway what do you and your friends think about this? Are the German planes really underpowered some how? Regards, and take care.

Bf 109Gs went up against wildcats once... And lost! 1945 near Norway.

@@momotheelder7124 It was more of a draw. As I recall 109s and 190s from JG 5 went up against RN hellcats and corsairs and both sides lost two aircraft, one of each type

By the way, would a Hellcat clash with a Me-109 at the time of WWII? they are fighters in different ways but it would be an interesting fight.
It happened over Norway (US Navy raid to block German reinforcement of France and protect the Invasion force from the north)during the Normandy invasion period and Hellcats were also used as artillery spotters over France that ran into 109s and 190s. Pretty much the Hellcats dominated the 109s, having the power and turning ability to dictate the fights.
Most if not all of the Hellcat pilots had Pacific experience fighting more agile opponents and had knowledge passed to them by intelligence gained from captured aircraft being tested.
It's a bit of a rabbit hole to go down but extremely interesting.
@@rodneypayne4827 Not just Norway, but I 'think' the FAA and/or the RN encountered the LW fighter force in the Med during the landings in the South of France.
That's not what happened, initially the 109s got the upper hand and shot down a hellcat, but in a accordance with the Luftwaffe's way of fighting the soviets which usually worked, but against hellcats couldn't dive away. The 109s took two losses and some FW 190s got another hellcat, but you can't tell which dominated as neither side knew how to use their aircraft correctly.
During an attempted raid to sink the German battleship Tirpitz in May of 1944, Royal Navy Hellcats from HMS Emperor engaged a mixed force of Me-109s and FW-190s over Kaafjord, Norway. Three Me-109s were shot down for the loss of one Hellcat that was lost to ground fire.
On 8 June 1943, Mutsu was moored in the Hashirajima fleet anchorage, with 113 flying cadets and 40 instructors from the Tsuchiura Naval Air Group aboard for familiarisation. At 12:13 the magazine of her No. 3 turret exploded, destroying the adjacent structure of the ship and cutting her in two. A massive influx of water into the machinery spaces caused the 150-metre (490 ft) forward section of the ship to capsize to starboard and sink almost immediately.

Hellcat mopped up in the Pacific after the Wildcat killed nearly all the Zero aces. Japanese pilot training standards were hopeless in 1944-45 due to lack of fuel for training flights, so Japanese rookies were cannon fodder for superbly trained American rookies.
Did the g-10s use pods ?
And also at the stage when these two aircraft would have met you have to understand the quality of the US or royal navy pilots and the condition of the aircraft compared to those of Germany and the amount of aircraft available
In that case I believe the hellcat would probably wipe the floor with a 109’s

The Hellcat is Poorly Estimated. The British Pilots Would have mopped the Floor with the Hellcat .It was ,From what I read Advanced enough. Germans Used

yikes Fishy .. 30mm, right? .. especially, at the beginning of this, just a split second of firing, turning them into pieces. Somehow, .. later, in the video though .. not so much.
Yeah, the Mk 108 doesn't come with a lot of ammo.
@@Fishyyy pardon .. I meant that it seemed like the program/AI, wasn't giving you as much damage credit, at the end of this sequence, versus the beginning.
That's not a thing that happens, I had just fired all the 30mm ammo.

@@kenswanson1093 Without checking the facts I believe the G models had 2 13mm machine guns atop the engine firing out of the engine nacelle, 1 30mm cannon firing through the prop hub with only about 60 rounds at their disposal(fed from a drum mag and not a belt) and it looks like Fishyyy added the 2 20mm(I'm speculating) wing pods. Not sure how much ammo the 13mm guns had at their disposal but it was quite a bit more than the 30mm. I wanna say 500 rnds per gun, but not sure. The 2 20mm(if they are that and not the 30mm) carried I believe roughly twice as much ammo as the 30mm, so about 120 rnds per gun. The MK108 30mm cannon was devastating but it had a low velocity and a terrible amount of projectile drop compared to both the 13mm guns and 20mm cannon, which meant you really had to get close up and be able to lead your shot accordingly to be able to hit anything. Very effective when doing hit and run on flights of allied bombers. Fishyyy likely fired all his 30mm by the end and only had the 2 13mm guns, which although quite deadly, not quite as impactful of the cannon. Again, all from memory of books and videos and if I missed anything or got something wrong please don't hesitate to correct me.

Well gosh, it's a miracle the U.S. was on the winning side in WW II, given how one-sided this engagement turned out. On the other hand, since no engagement like this ever took place as far as I know (A few units in the the British Navy did fly the F6F, and had a few encounters with Nazi fighters, but I don't claim to know the outcome(s)), and I wasn't able to see the altitude, how do you determine which side is going to prevail?
It did occur over Norway and France during the Normandy Invasion. The US Navy raided Norway launching strikes on German bases to stop any reinforcement of the French units. Over France US Navy Hellcats being used for Battleship gunfire spotters dominated the 109s they met. Sources are difficult to find but they are out there. I've read these stories in Hellcat reference books and a Flight Journal special edition magazine.
Hellcats getting involved with the luftwaffe is an interesting thing to know about, I also didn’t know too that Royal Navy spitfires (sea fires) got involved with Japanese aircraft
Hellcats also encountered German fighters in southern France around Marseille.

@@fatdaddy1996 but didn’t 100% of Russian losses occur on on the Eastern front? I’d say that 25% margin is a win for the Luftwaffe. (Your logic applied directly back at yourself) The Russian pilots were not as skilled or equipped as well as Allied pilots on the western front .
Those were some crappy Hellcat pilots. They flew to the strength of the 109's. I realize this is a simulation but I doubt real world results would match these results.
It was the same AI as always. It's pretty much the only thing this game does really well, it is not "crappy". A G-10 is way superior to any Hellcat version. And btw I challenge you to achieve the same result.
@@Fishyyy Are you sure the AI model is an F6F Hellcat and not an F4F Wildcat? The F6F has almost identical specs to the BF109. It is down only on top speed and cruise speed by about 10 to 12 MPH. Service ceiling and rate of climb are very close. Seriously doubt the Hellcats would just be hanging out below a BF109 in front of their nose or engaging in a head on attack on a G model. Calling bullshit on the AI, not you. Really enjoyed the video.
One big factor you do not have in mind, is that this is the final good take. I was shot down about 20 times, before I achieved this result. You cannot pull accurate conclusions at all from this.
IL-2 1946 uses the same AI for all aircraft, they use all fighters as turn fighters. Which, in this case, actually is the right descision in the Hellcat.
At 7000m the 109 G-10 is 90 km/h faster then the F6F-5. They are simply outclassed by the late war 109s. The G-10 is nearly as fast as the super top line late war Mustangs and P-47s. Faster then a Hellcat. I specifically chose it, because I knew I would be able to easyly outclimb the Hellcats. IL-2 1946 flight model comparison:

And I repeat, the AI is FINE. The AI is the only thing that game does well and they range from offering a good challenge to being straight up overpowered and unfair.
Without checking facts I don't believe the Hellcats had the induction system to fly combat effectively above 15-20,000 feet. Whereas the late model 109's had superior perfomance above 20,000 feet because that's where the allied bomber were flying.
