    The joy of old 4wd's, doing some basic wiring in my Gu today and found 3 earth leads going to nothing and some rubbed through wires to the uhf.

  • @richardwilliams8667
    @richardwilliams8667 ปีที่แล้ว

    Confirming on an 80 series you need to combine the two yellow wires together from the unit and earth them. I used the earth bolt behind the drivers kick panel where I brought the control wires through the door grommets I joined into the connector at the drivers door control panel. The two green wires are either side of the lock tab on the connector. These connect to the two white wires on the unit as per the video. This saved me running another earth wire through the door grommets.
    The power feed comes directly through from the accessory power box in engine bay following the bonnet release cable.
    I mounted the unit to the inside of the drivers side kick panel there is plenty of room for all to fit and tuck wires neatly.
    A neat solution in the end and works brilliantly.
    Pro Tip - when wiring the indicator light feed I did not remove any of the dash. I prised hazard switch out with a hook tool. There was enough slack to access the back of the connector to join the wires. Using a coat hanger wire i taped my wires to I was able to feed the wires down behind the console below the steering wheel where I then routed them to the unit.

    I did this to my van. By wiriing it to the switch, you can have the car running and then lock the vehicle and walk away. Good for warming it up in the mornings or jumping out for a quick delivery and not having to turn off the engine.

    For those who have purchased the unit linked in the description and wired up like Patty has, and can't get it to work... try wiring in the yellow AND yellow/black wires from the remote control module to the earth as well. Mine wouldn't work without wiring them in as well.

    Alternatively, for vehicles that don't have power locks, you can get kits to do that or take all the OEM switches, actuators, etc, off of the same model with power locks, including the door harnesses. I'm getting a 92 Chevy 2500hd with all manual locks and windows. So I'm buying the switch panels new and taking everything else off of a truck that did come with the power option to convert to power windows and locks.

    you could have easily found the left and right turn circuits in the drivers sill harness, rather than pulling the dash out and risk breaking something.
    also, old nissans require you to install an aftermarket drive motor in the drivers door to get CDL working remotely.

  • @fatmanoverlanding

    What perfect timing. My LC80 (also a GXL), has an aftermarket alarm (fitted to it some 26 years ago), and its remote receiver started playing up. It only works intermittently using the remote control fobs (x2) that came with it. I've replaced the batteries on both fobs, but I'm still getting the same issues. This narrows the issue to the receiver itself. So I haven't been using the remotes, and have been locking/unlocking my LC80 manually. This is perfect. But I wonder if wiring this eBay unit in my LC80 the same way as yours, will work as it has an alarm. Goodness only knows how the alarm's been wired etc. Another great DIY episode Pat. Great work. 👍

    The best thing is if the $20 module should fail, the key still works, the door button still works! Best technology is redundant technology!
    Interested in hearing your thoughts on soldering over crimps. I reckon solder for "floating wiring" where the joint is not going to be subject to flexing and crimping for wiring to a fixed point where it will be subject to flexing.

    • @ianwhitford3596

      Yeah it's a huge debate hahah! Gotta find out what NASA used in the space shuttle 😂

    • @BenMitro
      @BenMitro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianwhitford3596 Yeah, I've heard the same, but I reckon AA has a point regarding soldering, just don't solder to a fixed point or you will get fatigue failures. The solder wicks up the multi-strand wire and makes it brittle, with time it will fail, but floating, no stress on the joint so will last a long, long time.
      There are great advantages to crimping, it literally fuses the connector and the wire strands without causing a fatigue sight. Problem is as AA pointed out, inexperienced hands will deliver a great proportion of failed crimps - the yank test is not always enough to work out if a crimp is good or not (It probably is) but just one in a dozen or so that isn't up to scratch and god help you find it. It will look perfect even though it has failed... so hard to spot.

      Don't look to NASA go straight to motor sport wiring if you want to end the debate.
      Open barrel crimps are the way to go. And butt splice crimps are my new favourite system for tapping into or butt joining small gauge wires.
      They do take a fair bit of trial and error and at the end of the day a poor solder join is better than a poor crimp.

      @@kymlawrence6077 I test fitted it last week. But I have an issue that when I use the key on the drivers door to open the car all locks open, but when I use the key on passenger side it won’t unlock driver door. Not sure if that normal, or an issue with my car. Anyway I did test fit the keyless remote and it worked for all door, except the DRIVERS DOOR!! I taped into the black with red strip, and black with yellow strip. I also had to earth the yellow wires to get it to work. Let me know how you go mate.

    The one thing I'd be very careful of is if those key modules all have a unique signal to their paired keys, or if someone else with one of those kits key would also unlock your car.
    I'd buy a second one just to test it's keys on the one you installed in the 80 for peace of mind that only your key fob will work on your locks and no one else's.

      Kind of, the 70 series in general started in 1986 but the 76 started in 2006. The 80 series came out in 1990.
      The 70 series was released for Toyota to be able to still make the old reliable LC, while also being able to add more luxury features to their main series, (80,100,200,300,ect).

      I really like the 70 series although I'd probably go for the ute. For the money I'd rather have a decent semi-luxury city car and a full offroader, rather than a main series LC.
