    Pla meuk pad kapi prik thai dam (วิธีทำ ปลาหมึกผัดกะปิพริกไทยดำ) - or a Thai style of stir fried squid with shrimp paste and black pepper, is a very simple Thai dish, but it’s so delicious as long as you love squid.
    Here are the ingredients you'll need:
    250 grams squid (ปลาหมึก)
    1 head garlic (กระเทียม)
    1 tbsp peppercorns (พริกไทยดำ)
    ¼ tbsp shrimp paste (กะปิ)
    3 stalks green onion (ต้นหอม)
    1 tbsp oyster sauce (น้ำมันหอย)
    3 tbsp oil for stir frying (น้ำมัน)
    Once you’ve prepared all your ingredients, it’s time to bring out the wok, turn your heat to hot, add in the oil for frying, and then begin to stir fry. Begin with the garlic and peppercorns, and then continue by adding the shrimp paste and stir fry until fragrant, but make sure you don’t burn it.
    Finally, add in the squid, stir fry for just a few minutes until cooked, but don’t overcook it. Then add in the oyster sauce and green onions and turn off the heat.
    This simple Thai squid recipe should only take about 15 - 20 minutes from start to finish, so it’s easy to make, and tastes delicious. Just make sure you have fresh squid!

    I love squid! The plastic part is actually it's skeleton and the 'suction' part is the beak.

    Apart from your Vlogs and Adventures, I really love your authentic Thai recipe videos. I got really inspired by them and bought a mortar-n-pestle. Nothing beats fresh herbs. One of your videos in the Thai Street Food series you ate, Goong Ob Woon Sen (กุ้งอบวุ้นเส้น) at Somsak Pu Ob (สมศักดิ์ ปูอบ). I was literally drooling. If at all possible could you make a video on how to make this? Thank you once again for sharing your adventures and recipes.

    I actually REALLY appreciate your taking your time cutting the squid; I for one haven't cooked with it before and am unfamiliar with its anatomy. I hope you make another recipe series some time soon, or maybe even a skills demo with your mother-in-law.

    Hi Mark, this seems to be a wonderful recipe! I've got one tip here but I'm not sure whether it would work. In China, we would always add the white part of the spring onion with garlic and black pepper in the first step to bring all the that aroma out of spring onion and add the green part later. I think it might work well here and will definitely try your recipe thx!

  • @antonisusanto8148

    Been enjoying your japan vlog man. So great i want to go there right away. Anyway i think the squid stood too long in the wok. That residual heat in the oil will cook it even after you move it to the plate. Anyway, that recipe feels amazing. I think some birds eye chili and a squeeze of lime juice sure is nice addition (i love hot and sour foods). I'll try that recipe. Great video man!

    Looks so yummy!!! So nice to see you try to remake some dishes from your fav restaurants, that's what makes travelling even more fun and meaningful I think :) I only stopped by BKK when I was 4 years old on my way to Jakarta, where I had lived about 6-8 months while my father worked. I don't quite remember what I ate in Asia, but I love coconut aroma from Thai rice I sometimes cook these days.
    I love seafood, I think I will try this dish one day... I have cooked octopus but never squid, a bit scary to handle to be honest, but I will give it a try... squid is excellent as an appetizer also.
    I have not seen shrimp paste here in Guadalajara :( Possible to make it from Shrimp powder, or would you suggest any other substitute? Thanks! x

    • @MarkWiens
      @MarkWiens  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +sen koma Oh cool, glad you've been to Bangkok, though it was a long time ago. Hmm, I'm not so sure about the shrimp powder, but would you be able to find shrimp paste at any Asian supermarket? It's pretty common as it's very popular throughout SE Asia. Hope you can find some and enjoy the cooking!

    • @IzumiK1967
      @IzumiK1967 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mark Wiens Thank you Mark, I have Oyster sauce, and some sweet and sour sauces are available from Walmart here lol But I have not seen Fish sauce nor Shrimp paste. I just googled about Shrimp paste, and seems it is a bit tricky to make it at home because it needs to be fermented. I will try to go to a Japanese food store where I buy often Japanese ingredients, they might carry some South East foods and ingredients also... I am sure it addes great taste and flavour to the meal! x
