I really needed to hear all of this, thank you. I've struggled with loneliness and have had a lack of friends as an adult, have felt very outcasted for a long time. I got back into roller skating a couple years ago and started Roller Derby a couple of months ago :)
I’m 22 and I can relate to all of this, just the only difference is that I haven’t gotten into Roller Derby before but I’m investing in my own pair of roller skates after years of renting for school/Girl Scout socials. I miss the craft of roller skating and the nostalgic value of it, I wanna be surrounded by nature while I skate if I’m not at a rink… I love it all so much. I’m such an old soul!
I just recently got back into skating and made so many adult friends at the skate rink. Part of it is just making it happen, part of is that we all have this passion for skating. I would also say that roller skating saved my life too.
Skaters are cool people. 😎 I love the diversity of the skating community where I live. We’ve got a 90 year old granny who comes to dance on the side lines, a 70 year old skater who had hip replacement and another elderly gentleman who customized his walker with wheels so he can keep on skating as well as all the younger people from just about every kind of background. It’s the best bc we all love to skate. 😊
I am 42. One day I was on my mountain back at a park where I live (Costa Rica) and I saw a guy with quad skates, enjoying his ride. And suddenly it hit me: why am I not doing this? That's all it took. I swear to God, that was the phrase I said to myself. And I uttered it with my mouth. WHY AM I NOT DOING THIS? I saw this as a very entertaining activity. I had no clue of the implications, learning, gear, practice... none of that. I didn't even know there was much activity of this on TH-cam. I found your channel because I started (like many others) to look for tips, lessons and all of that on TH-cam. Ever since I purchased my first pair of quads on October 19th 2019 I haven't stopped rollerskating. I just can't. It is super addictive. I do it alone, but I listen to music while I do it, sessions of 2 hours, outside. It's a great exercise, I am thinner now, I feel much more happy and satisfied, my body craves for a rollerskating session when I finish working at 5 and the weather is nice outside. I used to watch much TV afer work or playing videogames and skating has taken over those things. It's amazing. I live much healthier now. And I am much happier. My country has many limitations in regards to that; very few to no parks where to skate, few to no stores (thank God for internet shopping)... people in here are more into football, mountain bike, etc. There is not a huge culture of rollerskating although there was much more in the 80s. Now I wish more and more people will be interested in that. And I'm not gonna lie, when you get to 42 like me, and you are single but very handsome (haha) it's a bit weird for people to see you doing this. It's like... you should be married raising kids and being bored at home all day. But some adults (and trust me this is real) have approached me when they see me doing it and say, where did you learn this? I would love to do half of what you do. And I can barely move, seriously... I just roll and it looks nice. Very nice. But I am far from being an expert. However people see you like you are a pro, probably because they don't see you falling or losing balance... and some of them really, really want to try it out because skating looks amazing. But I guess some people fear the reaction of others... like them, being also in their 40s or 50s, are going to look awkward and others will talk. Because you know. People talk. I don't know how many years God will grant me for living, but as far as I am concerned I am NOT planning on leaving this anytime soon. As a matter of fact I already ordered my fourth pair of skates, so I have 2 quads and 2 inlines. For different occasions and moods you know. Sorry for the long comment and thanks for reading. I have a zillion more things to talk and share, but let's keep it civil ;-)
Thanks for this! I found the roller skating community to be a fantastic safe haven when I started on my sobriety journey- the rink is like only group activity for adults that doesn’t inherently include alcohol! Also helped me make more sober friends ☺️
The perfect video and just what I needed to hear. After researching various skates, watched multiple skate videos over several months but hesitant to start because of my age (63 yrs young) now I truly feel confident to pursue my newest hobby. Thanks for the encouragement.
You can do it! I’ve met skaters that started last year in their 50’s and 60’s and some of them can pull off the dance moves a lot more effortlessly than I can 🤣🤣 it’s a lot of fun. It’s an endorphin rush for sure!!
Just started a month ago at age 66. I figure it’s now or never. LOL. Seeing my parents in their 90s makes me realize how important muscle strength and balance is to the quality of our life, and how we can lose them so easily as we get older. So I think now is a perfect time to start skating.
Very true! I asked a rando skating at the park for some advice and he was very happy to give it. Every skater I've met in the wild was just happy to see other people enjoying the sport!
I 100% agree with everything you said here! I'm 41 and started skating in January 2021. I'd say I've always been "friend hungry". Call me a loner extrovert. Work:nope; having kids and joining mom groups for play dates: double nope; being a Girl Scout Leader: a misnomer, free baby sitter with high-level content is more fitting; boyfriends/husband's friends: haha, yeah right; clubs: too much alcohol. SKATING: perfect! Absolutely perfect! I'm making so many friends, but not just surface level friends. Real friends that you really care about and have something fun to do with. I also love skating alone. I like really focusing on what my goals are and drilling. And then, when I'm tired of that, it's nice to see some familiar faces at the rink to chat with. PERFECT! And lately, I've been making plans with these friends for going to local adult nights and skate parties. I vote artistic skating video. I'm going to my first artistic skating competition this January.
Dirty... I just love you. I am 68 years old with 3 grandkids who love to skate. I did skate back when I was in my 30's with my kids. I fell two different times and broke both arms (2 months apart). I loved skating. Now my daughter (in her 30's) has brought me back to the skating world. I am shaky on my feet (because of fear... this time I may break a hip)... but your videos are so supportive and encouraging. Skating is so much fun. It has great atmosphere ... music and lights... and it is great exercise. I knew a girl who said she dropped 2 pant sizes by rollerskating. Thank you for your videos. They help so much.
Please get some padded shorts that protect your hips, thighs, and tailbone. I’ll be 72 this week and do have some physical challenges. Somehow out of the blue I decided I had to skate again. I’ve got all the pads and a helmet. I’ve been watching Debby a lot. My Lollys arrive tomorrow and I’ll be headed to the tennis court to Practice practice practice. My daughter and daughter-in-law will be getting skates and joining me on this new adventure. Good luck to you. Hope your falls are graceful and safe. I just want to dance and move and Not speed skate.
There is a video series on falling safely for senior citizens. It's on TH-cam - you'll find it if you search for it. I bet you could use those techniques when skating, too, so you don't break a hip.
I learned skaters are really cool people, as a newbie in this world, when I see someone who's skating I really like. I just skate up to them and say " you make that look so easy" and from that point they talk to me and give me tips
Thank you for this! As an adult, its hard to meet new people with the same interest. I’ve been skating for less than a month now and i noticed the skating community is so welcoming. Everyone is willing to answer your questions or give you tips on how to be better at skating.
Love this!!!!! I lived in Huntington Beach by myself for a year and felt I didn’t fit in. I started skating the beach after work and going to FVSC some Thursdays to get out of the house. Through this I made friends at the rink and other skate events! Roller skating literally saved my sanity. 💖💖💖
“people you know and could describe by their skates but don’t know their name” there’s one at my rink :’) she’s magical! I never talk to anyone at my rink though because I’m too intimidated by the idea-thanks for the pep talk!! I’m gonna try next time I go
I’m in my 40s have arthritis in my lower back and couldn’t even do a squat three months, I’ve lived with body dysmorphia all my life and wouldn’t allow ppl to take full body photos of me in any situation. Now I started skating in late May 2021 and it has transformed me completely!! I can do squats 😂 now, my chronic body aches are less and less the stronger I get, I’m posting videos of my progress on social media which means showing my full body and just accepting it and being grateful, my mental health is in check, my stress levels are down. I’m totally obsessed with rollerskating and it’s the only thing I talk about now lol. I’ve met so many great ppl too! The skate community is the perfect example of what diversity looks like. I’m so grateful I found this hobby and the community. I’m going to skate for as long as I can and let’s hope that’s up into my 80’s / 90’s because the joy of life is what I’m living for these days. Skating has completely changed me. I’m not the same person I was 6 months ago.
Hi Deb, I'm 60 and decided to start skating again. Your videos are truly helping me with understanding the gears, and wheels, and mechanics of skating. It is a fun activity and gets me around people. I don't have an activity partner, so even just a smile and a few kind words at the rink goes a long way. I've bought my first pair of skates and plan on getting the safety gear next so I can skate outside. Thank you for the discount code at Pigeon, it did save me money!
This is awesome, Dirty. I skate outdoors alone and I feel so fortunate to have met a group of skaters. I've only skated with them twice, but already feel that bond and can tell they're wonderful people.
This is sooooo true!! I came to the rink by myself for the first time a couple of months ago. I met some awesome people in my skating class and when I go to different skate sessions. The seasoned skaters are super helpful in helping you if you have questions. I have received many compliments about my progress!! I find myself helping brand new skaters get comfortable in their skates 🛼 and sharing what has helped me. The vibe is truly infectious!!!
Great video Deb!! Good advice and true. I am 39 and I go to the skating rink with the hope of making some new friends with a common interest....skating!!
What treat for me this weekend in So Cal. Not only attending a beach music festival but also meeting an inspiration to me in taking up skating again from this lovely lady. I've watched many You Tube tutorials from Dirty Debbie and being able take a lesson and meet her was truly an honor. THANK YOU, THANK YOU,THANK YOU!!
This is so true! I joined a beginner roller skating class because I was lonely in a new city and it’s been one of the easiest way to make friends! I even have a few fairy skate parents who’ve adopted me and give me all kinds of tips.
AMAZING video. My 8 yr old niece just brought a pair of skates. I’ve never been much of a skater but was trying to enhance her skating abilities. In doing so, I found you. She has since went into the house (didn’t like your video, said you made her fall). LOL LOL LOL. No I’m sitting here mesmerized, from, you tone, body moment (looks like poetry on skates), your words of inspiration to skate, your overall beauty. AMAZING I need you when I’m pitching real estate leads. I love you and I’m found skating. 55, single, no love, no friends. THANK YOU. Skating here I come
I have made SOOO many friends through roller skating. I have never met a skater who wasn't lovely, approachable, fun and generous sharing tips and tricks. If you're reading this post yes, I am talking about YOU, Cambridge Adult Skaters and St Neots Crazy Skaters!
I may only go to the rink once a week but most of the friends I have, I’ve met at fvsc! It’s so much fun having the freedom and the seeing the diversity of others. I’m bringing some of my school friends and teaching them how to skate with the amazing people I met here! I love skating and I hope I can skate for as long as possible 🛼💖
So good to hear you talk about this topic. When I was ice skating all the time I had skating friends who also turned out to be situational. Now I belong to an artistic roller skating club. After covid the few adults who joined the club disappeared. Now it's almost entirely kids Except for the kids' parents. No match there.
your words in this video felt so good to hear!! I'm totally in a transitory place in life where I have no friends and would like to find community, but more-so just want to have something fun and active to go do by myself. if I make pals, it'll just be a bonus :) excited to step out of my comfort zone and get used to rinks
Good topic and all true, have met skaters from all over the country, learned some different styles of skating, have made friends I never would have met otherwise and found my husband. Adult skating is alive and well here in Central Florida. No matter what your level is you are going to have fun rolling ! I skate 3x a week, it's always number one on my day's agenda.
Wow, I am just loving your videos! I'm 28 years old and struggle making friends internally. I seem like a happy go-lucky person but inside I have a lot of anxiety about it. My skate friends range from ages 14-35+ and they're so awesome, I'm appreciative of their true friendship 💖
So true!!! I feel the same way when I watch ppl skate . I use to skate growing up : I’m 27 now I’m going to get some and let’s see how it goes lol. Thankful to have found this page
SO TRUE about people beginning skating in transition ! I was new to town, met plenty of folks who started in retirement, after divorce, etc. For me skate culture is the most welcoming of all hobbies I’ve had. From STL Love this channel!
I wish SO bad that my local skating rink and surrounding ones were open more frequently with different kind of sessions through the week. Evening skate session would be phenomenal to let go of a work day. I wish there were adult skate nights too because the kids all make me nervous 😂
Talk to the management. Often they are looking for someone to spearhead it. Especially if you can let them know you have a fair amount of people who want it.
This sounds very similar to my experiences when I started to learn Lindy Hop and what I've seen since then. I love that roller skating has that same kind of power! Thank you for making this video. Hopefully it will inspire people to try roller skating.
this is my favorite video!! thank you for sharing your wisdom! i had so much fun taking your adult class in august, it was such good vibes and a great place to meet new people. i’m a solo skater but have met some great people and amazing skaters at the rink. i have to get back to my local rink (moonlight) soon and come back for another lesson with you ASAP!!
I have just started roller skating. Fortunately I already have friends, because where I live is a roller skating desert. I skate on my own in a car park (parking lot to my US friends 🙂). Still have fun, though. Great video (again), by the way.
After not being on skates for over 30 plus years and now age 71 I’m trying to skate again. I was a good skater as a kid but stopped skating around 12 years old and started up at 40. Skated 2 years until they closed the rink. At 71 it just hard to meet others who are my age skating. I feel like a very new beginner
Yes!!! I want to give a shout out to the amazing skaters at my local rink, they are absolutely incredible and amazing and I am in awe of their talent! Skating is one of the best ways to have fun, make friends, and achieve so much!!! GO SKATE EVERY ONE!
Thank you sooo much.. i was so hesitant to go to adult skate night solo.... I literally turned around and realized i have no friends. i am going to be 50 next week.
Amazing video sooo good. In my area I had never seen anyone skating around, but after watching your vids I became super inspired to be the first skater in town. For about 12 months I skated every weekend, rain hail or shine, by the bay boardwalk , falling , trippin, crashing and eventually was cruising, but I was always the lone roller skater by myself for ages, about a yr and a half later I see about 4 or 5 others that have taken it up. I've never talked to them but your vid has inspired me to be thinking of setting up a roller skating group in the area on FB/reddit/ or meetup and giving me an excuse to go up and talk to see if they'd be keen.
Shout out to all East and West coast skaters, been skating since the 70s and loving it,will be buried w/my skates.Deb is correct 👌 about everything she said in this video
Great timing again Deb! I'm headed to an open skate this weekend and it's been a while since I've dived in to a new social group. Nervous but excited 🥲
I am 50 and was skating for a bit with a friend. He moved. I did not know anyone at the rink as I was only going for a bit. I stopped going because I felt weird going by myself. My sister came up for vacation and we went one night, I met a few people and have been going alone to adult skate night weekly since this Summer. I know every regular there now. Everyone is nice, we have people in their 20's and some skaters in their mid to late 70's!
My friend commented the other day that every time we go skating, I make a friend. I just end up talking to people, through compliments or questions, or encouraging when people are new. You know what? I like that.
I needed to hear this thank you…now can you talk about adjusting your kingpin/cushions and the difference between skating on factory tight kingpin/cushion and loose kingpin????I’m asking because I’m a new skater that wants to learn more moves and I’m having issues with certain rhythm skate moves…it seems like i am working hard on certain moves I think should be easier…thank you for reading and for your teaching! I’m a huge fan…
oh my gosh.I watch this lady on Tiktok and she does toe spins and I was like, Wow!!! how does she do that??? Can you please please please pleeeeeeaaaaaaaassssssseeeeeee do a video on how to do these???
YES!!!!!! Not knowing names at the rink...at mine, we've had: Candi Girl Mom (we talk, but she's only semi-regular, never "properly" introduced ourselves to each other.) Ombre Mom (actually got to talking with her, she has 5 kids, like me, we're friends on FB now) Ballerina Bob (older gentlemen, still doing artistic, now know his name) Stompy (one of the many regular teens - didn't glide so much as...yep..."stomped" around on wheels, though she's gotten SO MUCH better over the last couple years, and I know her name now, too) Crybaby (10/11 - ?? - yr. old boy, the little dude cries over EVERYTHING. Falls down? Cries. Snack bar out of his favorite food/drink? Cries. Loses a single quarter? Cries.) "Lil Man" (Kid was about 4 years old first time I saw him, comes with his parents, and was already out there doing some pretty slick JB skating.) "Dad" (single dad, 95% of the time he's there with his 7/8 year old son, we talk often, even his son - very shy at first - will come up to talk to me now and then.) ...and SO many more! I am a rink rat, always have been, always will be...though I do love getting outside - street, trails, park - just as much as getting into the rink.
I really needed to hear all of this, thank you. I've struggled with loneliness and have had a lack of friends as an adult, have felt very outcasted for a long time. I got back into roller skating a couple years ago and started Roller Derby a couple of months ago :)
Girl same!! Roller skating literally saved my life.

I don’t have enough fingers to count how many friends I’ve made since I’ve started regularly coming to the rink and started skating. I appreciate you😘
I count as 2 friends...

@petra tetris welcome to the beautiful world of roller skating 💛😉
Thanks for this! I found the roller skating community to be a fantastic safe haven when I started on my sobriety journey- the rink is like only group activity for adults that doesn’t inherently include alcohol! Also helped me make more sober friends ☺️

Great topic but a non-issue for us loners. My music is the only friend I need when skating.
Where my loners at?! LOL
Much love to everyone. :)
I like people, but I'm so dang shy, yes. I end up a loner a lot. It's all good though! Just gimme the beat! Love to you too!

THANK YOU. Skating here I come
I came back to skating b/c my cousin roped me back into it. I met some of the nicest ppl @ your family’s skating rink!
YOU ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST! 🧡
I started skating again in February 2021 and haven't had a dull day since 😅
I have made SOOO many friends through roller skating.
Yes, yes, and yes! Thanks for helping people understand the whole skating friends, deal, vibe, thing…lol
Wow, I am just loving your videos! I'm 28 years old and struggle making friends internally. I seem like a happy go-lucky person but inside I have a lot of anxiety about it. My skate friends range from ages 14-35+ and they're so awesome, I'm appreciative of their true friendship 💖
100% truth!! I get so excited when my favorite skaters are at the rink. Just watching their moves makes me smile. We have a great time
Thank you so much Miss Debby! I bought new skates 6 months ago but I just haven't had the confidence to get back into it!.......UNTIL NOW!!
Once again…singing my life with your song, Deb⚡️
So true!!! I feel the same way when I watch ppl skate . I use to skate growing up : I’m 27 now I’m going to get some and let’s see how it goes lol. Thankful to have found this page
I am thankful too!!!!
SO TRUE about people beginning skating in transition ! I was new to town, met plenty of folks who started in retirement, after divorce, etc. For me skate culture is the most welcoming of all hobbies I’ve had. From STL Love this channel!
I really needed this video today. Thank you. It’s like you were speaking directly to me. ❤️
I feel so many can relate to this! How true! It’s a good feeling to have a great friend!
Would love both videos: toe spins OR figure skating in the future 💜💜💜
"Adult Night" is the best. ;^)...
I should get into a rink then! I skate alone in parking lots. I enjoy it but I do need to do a little better at making human connections as well!
This was like going to a therapy session. I feel better already lol.
Thank you so much for making this video! I needed this ❤️❤️🛼🛼
Yes!!! I want to give a shout out to the amazing skaters at my local rink, they are absolutely incredible and amazing and I am in awe of their talent! Skating is one of the best ways to have fun, make friends, and achieve so much!!! GO SKATE EVERY ONE!
Love you Dirty! Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks so much for this video. What you said is so very true
Thanks for watching!
Thank you sooo much.. i was so hesitant to go to adult skate night solo.... I literally turned around and realized i have no friends. i am going to be 50 next week.
Great advice and inspiration!!!
I can relate.
This couldn't pwrtain to me more, Ms Dirty. Thank youuuuu
As always you have great info thank you 😊 - I enjoy your videos- videos showing routines would be really good
Amazing video sooo good.
Oh you absolutely need to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@Dirtydeborahharry Thanks for the inspiration Dirty :)
Ty 😊
Shout out to all East and West coast skaters, been skating since the 70s and loving it,will be buried w/my skates.Deb is correct 👌 about everything she said in this video
Great timing again Deb! I'm headed to an open skate this weekend and it's been a while since I've dived in to a new social group. Nervous but excited 🥲
I feel like such a loser and I really thought there was no way I could make new friends as an adult. Thank you queen ❤
This much more excited for my next trip to my local rink 🤩
Love The Shirt Giving Me Rocky Horror Vibes. Love watching your Videos
Omigosh yes! Same.
I love this so much. I wish we had a rink in town.... I haven't found a skating community here yet...
yes toe spinsss
Hello DH how are you is amazing to see you again you look wonderful is always !!!!
That was great the heat Dirty thank you. I would love some more videos on spins I really struggle with them. 😍
More to come!
Love this video. Would like to see more like this, giving life advice!
Thank you! Holidays are the worst times of year for folks with no family and friends. I hope rink will be open for the holidays.
We are always open on Thanksgiving. We have also been open on Christmas in the past.
This is a good topic. Tks
Oh, soo true! I happened to find new friends through skating! Mostly from other cities (and for some weird reason they all are skating instructors 😆)
I'm already rollerskating but this makes me want to start rollerskating!
I really thought the music from the machines in the background was your outro music 🤣
My friend commented the other day that every time we go skating, I make a friend. I just end up talking to people, through compliments or questions, or encouraging when people are new. You know what? I like that.
This is good, thank you
now this is the content I need
Great video 💜💜
I’ve been going to the rink for a few months and I haven’t made any friends. Is it just me??? This video was encouraging though!
Find me :)
Smile,. Speak,. To others,. maybe other activities,. Church,. Classes:. Art,. Dance,. Sports.🙂👍🧡
It's true! That's how I met you. And how I met that strange woman skating in the middle of your video. (Hi Deb!)
LOVE YOU CINDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’ll just happen! 💜🛼🛼
Thank you. I need this
😊
Yay!! I needed this!❤️
This video is perfect!!!
Hello! I definitely have a video under the "gear" section of playlists. Please watch it :)
👍🏿There's people I've met at the rink that I probably would have never have spoken to outside the skating rink.
Same, so true and of all different ages
TRUTH! Crazy when the media tells us were all divided and then you go to the rink ...
@@Dirtydeborahharry media only reports on negativity! If I watched the news I’d think the whole world went insane…
Who sells rubber cushions for suregrip classic plates? Thanks Ramon,Canada
Hiya I love your tutorials your beautiful and amazing ❤❤also was wondering do you ship roller skates to Dublin, Ireland??🇨🇮❤
Do it. Just keep going and you will make friends.
Dancing is one of the easiest ways to make friends as well!
Our rink has an Age 50+ session one morning a week, with about 25 regulars. They play old show tunes the first hour, then switch to more modern music.
Are you talking about me in this video and life lesson lol
Erek said omg she is lol
Misty!!!! :) You know when you relate to this ... we all relate. It was one of the reasons I joined derby!
oh my gosh.I watch this lady on Tiktok and she does toe spins and I was like, Wow!!! how does she do that??? Can you please please please pleeeeeeaaaaaaaassssssseeeeeee do a video on how to do these???
YES!!!!!! Not knowing names at the rink...at mine, we've had:
Candi Girl Mom (we talk, but she's only semi-regular, never "properly" introduced ourselves to each other.)
Ombre Mom (actually got to talking with her, she has 5 kids, like me, we're friends on FB now)
Ballerina Bob (older gentlemen, still doing artistic, now know his name)
Stompy (one of the many regular teens - didn't glide so much as...yep..."stomped" around on wheels, though she's gotten SO MUCH better over the last couple years, and I know her name now, too)
Crybaby (10/11 - ?? - yr. old boy, the little dude cries over EVERYTHING. Falls down? Cries. Snack bar out of his favorite food/drink? Cries. Loses a single quarter? Cries.)
"Lil Man" (Kid was about 4 years old first time I saw him, comes with his parents, and was already out there doing some pretty slick JB skating.)
"Dad" (single dad, 95% of the time he's there with his 7/8 year old son, we talk often, even his son - very shy at first - will come up to talk to me now and then.)
...and SO many more!
I am a rink rat, always have been, always will be...though I do love getting outside - street, trails, park - just as much as getting into the rink.
You made this for me. I’m sure of it 😜
Do the Pontiac pls!!!!!!
