This LESSONS Series playlist you are doing is absolute gold. I know a lot of these topics are covered in some of your older vids but having all these essentials brought in together in learning order is absolutely brilliant. You are a master teacher !!!
I love that you are showing what we are usually doing wrong, I saw myself there so many times (and I didn't even try this transition, but I do some of these mistakes in other moves)
Yo I was skating sunday night (it's tuesday) and noticed I still wasn't sure how to turn back around without doing a toe-stop turn, fancy that timing. Perfect video, thank you so much. And yes, I am definitely in skating for life, I'm sure. It's been around 5 months now and I've been just practicing basics, not trying to copy tricks, I know once I get a solid foundation the "tricks" will come naturally. Someone yelled, "Now I need to learn THAT," to me one of the first times I felt I was truly vibing at the rink (Sunday), and it was so validating.
That is so true about not wanting to practice the baby steps or drills to improve the bigger move because they are “boring “.! I just want to learn it super quickly but in the end, it’s quicker to go little by little to make sure you have the whole basic skeleton
Thanks! I went skating last night and was totally wondering how to get in and out of skating backwards. Since I don’t really know any moves, I was practicing balancing on one foot just like you showed. Today, after watching your video I was able to successfully go from backwards to forward! Your such a good teacher! All your little tips and break down make it easy to understand and try.
Hey Dirty! First of all I think you're the only person who loves camo as much as I do. LOL Second - this is right on time. I have been so scared to try this but I actually did it on Sunday. So now I'mma pay attention and see what Muva has to say. Always appreciate you and what you do for the community!!!
Dirty, I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see you skate to some of the songs we all like....but you have helped us to do get skills so we can learn to skate from the heart.....thank you for that
Thank you for this video!!! I have finally gotten pretty comfortable skating backwards after watching your videos and now it’s time to figure out how to transition from forward to back and back to forward!!!
I just got my skates last week and your videos have really helped me get back to skating even better than when I was a child. I look forward to going to CA to your ring
My ability to turn like this is correlating pretty closely with my ability to hold a back outside edge (but I still cheat and kinda just turn on the back axles). But also, one thing that was making this and the forwards-backwards turns *sooooo much more* difficult when I started was having the big chunky stable grippy default stock wheels on my Suregrip skates. They grip like buggery, with Zero margin for error if my foot when down at the wrong angle. Now those are still fun for hooning around corners at high speed, but the very first lesson after I got harder indoor wheels, with that bit of forgiving slide all of a sudden I could do mohawks, sidestance/spreadeagle, powerslides, (fell over from pushing too hard on crossovers), all that speccy stuff.
I appreciate what you do for us roller skate learners. Thank you very much Debra. Can you please make a videos on how to use the big and small cyrcles drown on the ground? Thanks
You’re such a fabulous teacher and your energy is infectious. Thank you so much for all your efforts, it shows how much you love skating and helping others In your videos. And it’s FREE, I feel so fortunate. Please could you do a transition video backwards to forwards for one foot? I can manage forward to back and 3turns are coming naturally now, but I’m struggling with reversing it. Thanks Everybody involved Special shoutout to the skating videographer too ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Solid video D, thank you for taking the time. The way you explain weight distribution helps me as a left dominant skater. This transition works better for me
I’m screaming because that shoulder move was so me 😂😅. All of your videos are so spot on and help me navigate where my mistakes are. Somehow you’re offering private lessons to so many of us stuck inside ♥️! Headed to practice!
I just tried this recently, going back to front makes sense in my brain because you're turning in the direction that you'll be skating. Turning front to backwards skating is where my brain breaks haha Thank you for the content!
I started to get frustrated with this transition, but now I know where I finally went wrong!! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try this transition out at the rink 😊
This is so helpful!! I notice i have very smooth turn half the time and that horrible push off the other half. Your example was the perfect example of what i wouldn't be able to put into words to inquire about. Also i may have to put a neck foam thingy on because I'm currently awful with looking down. Ways i avoid it is use the mirror and look myself dead in the eyes, or open my windows blinds and look out. But darn if the look down sneaks back. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU BRING TO THE SKATE WORLD especially those of us new to the adventure.
Thank you for your videos, I've been skating seriously for the three years and your videos have been instrumental in my progress. You articulate the fine points of skating so well and I have benefited from it.
I’ve watched your earlier videos on this but I NEEDED the reminder to turn my head! Lately I’ve been wondering why my transitions were feeling rusty, especially when I try to turn to the left. It’s because I wasn’t turning my head enough! I guess I just got “lazy” once I felt I had the move down. I went out yesterday, followed this advice and they went so much smoother!
Another great video!! Your videos are always great to watch!!! I am currently reviewing your video on turning while skating forward. As a new skater, I am more focused on mechanics than anesthetics. Can't be sexy if you spend more time on the floor than you do on your skates!! 🤣
I was at the rink in beginner 2 lessons on Saturday and asked this same question to someone else. If that question made it to you, and you rolled your eyes at hearing it again, I am sorry. But at the same time, THANK YOU for this breakdown. Believe me I am going to be memorizing every aspect of this video, and how to turn around front to back. 3 months of skating, 5 months of toe injury recovery time, and 1 month of starting over skating, and I still have big fear and clumsy feet. I can do front crossovers, but for some reason, I cannot seem to get my brain to do this. And trust me that is really frustrating knowing that you're trying and just can't seem to get it.
Deborah, I love these videos! These tips definitely apply to ice skating also! You are so graceful on skates 😊 I watch your videos for enjoyment and admittedly, for some tips 😁
Wow I feel like one day you could be a teacher of teachers... show the rest of the world how to teach whatever it is they are passionate about, because you've got a brilliant skill for teaching on top of your great skill and understanding of skating!
What a great video! Thanks very much for sharing with us! Would you also have a video about different variations of backward to forward skating? Have a nice day!
Thank you for this great video! I am taking figure skating classes at my local rink so I can be a better jamskater! The main reason I'm taking these classes is to learn how to turn around smoothly! I'm going to practice, today, especially, holding to the count of 1,2,3 on which ever foot I turn around on!
I've had surgery!!! No skating for at least 12 weeks!!! And we have snow now... And around -18C (-0,4F) :-( I live for your videos! Love and light from snowy, ice cold, Norway!
I’ve always found it easier to transition from back to forward over forward to back lol! Also, the part about skating on your, i guess we’ll call it, “transition foot”, instead of lifting up the other and trying to skate off of that is the one key i needed 😂 ready to make some smooth transitions 🙌🏾
Hi Deb, this is Telma from Portugal, I’m 33 y.o never skated before and I’m learning it all with you! I absolutely love your videos you’re a great teacher!!! Congratulations! Still can’t skate backwards though… 🤯
We keep asking because it's haaaard and asking for a magic solution is not 😂 Do you think the cushion hardness play an important role in this? My skates currently don't carve* at all and I feel like if I have a little bit of speed and my two feet don't get super close to 180° then the wheels of the forward foot will act as a break and I'll stumble face first in the floor 🙈 *Carving, that's when the skate makes a curve with all wheels on the ground without sliding any of them, due to the trucks mobility, is that correct? My cushions are hard and then my trucks don't have this mobility.
Love you beautiful ❤️bout to take the pups for a skate❤️❤️❤️never have been able to nail this smoothly every single time😂 passin my mind today baby. Smoooooothly😍😍😍
When I do a back to front transition, I tend to just pivot on my back heal so it’s smoother after I step with my lead foot. I’ve been trying to step into it on my lead foot, but I end up on an inside edge on that lead foot. How would describe what you do so that your lead foot is on an outside edge?
Ok ok ok! You got me I turn exactly the improper way!!! I should know better I've skated both ice and roller off and on since I was 8! Never was coached just self taught. So gotta remember to use weight and lean. You make me laugh! The whole thing about making things big is something I have to get out of my head! Small and tight! But so you know I'm 5'10 and on skates I'm 6'3!also WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA AND TUTORIALS IN THE LATE 70'S 😂😂😂 or in the 80s and 90s for that matter. Thank you deb your the bomb!!! Now off to the park to practice.
Love this!! My balance needs serious work so after standing on one foot I’m now skating forward and backward on one foot. Super hard. Why can’t I skate in a straight line backwards on one foot?
Could be that your trucks are too loose, your upper body is out of alignment, you currently lack muscle strength to hold the position or you just are not used to it yet. So keep working on it!
I noticed when you do it, you're curving into the transition instead of trying to place your feet completely 180° apart from each other. Meanwhile I've been here trying move in a completely straight line, stretching my hips as far as they can possibly go 😂. I can't wait to give this another try ❤ Ty!
Thank you! Great timing for me to practice this on Thursday morning. It’s something that I really want to do with confidence and panache but I’m doing that clunky foot thing you illustrated at the moment 😂 Now I know how to correct that.
And...I have officially figured out my problem. I can skate an entire lap - if I'm going fast enough - on just my left leg/foot. Can not, for the life of me, keep my balance on my right...at all. Sadly, that's a medical issue, so it looks like I may be doing jump turns forever.
This LESSONS Series playlist you are doing is absolute gold. I know a lot of these topics are covered in some of your older vids but having all these essentials brought in together in learning order is absolutely brilliant. You are a master teacher !!!
Glad you like them! I will make more :)
I love that you are showing what we are usually doing wrong, I saw myself there so many times (and I didn't even try this transition, but I do some of these mistakes in other moves)

When she showed us how we “look behind” and barely turned her head, I died! 😂 I feel attacked! But it’s so true!
That vibe when the teacher is in a bad mood because no one in the class did their homework. 🤣
💜 you Deb!!
It’s really helpful to see that you’re doing more of a 2 point turn than a complete 180. I keep trying to do a 180 and fall over myself trying!
So good. I’m on my lunch break and putting my skates on right now to practice this.
Thank you for this! This playlist is really helpful. I got my transitions down from forward to backward, but then backward to forward was a struggle!!
That is so true about not wanting to practice the baby steps or drills to improve the bigger move because they are “boring “.! I just want to learn it super quickly but in the end, it’s quicker to go little by little to make sure you have the whole basic skeleton

I felt so exposed when you said “I know! Don’t lie!” About turning with my foot first 🤭
I love your lessons and your reminders of practicing what's in our own level 💜
Wow, thank you!
I'm taking the details seriously! I'm scared but determined to learn! I'm determined to learn! Thank you darling! 😉
Hey Dirty! First of all I think you're the only person who loves camo as much as I do. LOL Second - this is right on time. I have been so scared to try this but I actually did it on Sunday. OMG you make it look so sweet...I took a few tumbles, but finally got it, practice, practice, practice.
Great job!
This is why I have problems on the last part of the forward outward mowhak. I think this will help me quite a bit. Thanks
Preach! I need to book a trip to Long Beach just to visit FVSC!
I really appreciate the break down of moves I can drill to get better! Thank you! 🖤
Thank you for this video!!! I have finally gotten pretty comfortable skating backwards after watching your videos and now it’s time to figure out how to transition from forward to back and back to forward!!!
The DUN-DUN-DUN-DUUUUUN… DUUUN gets me every time 😂😂😂

I love this way to transition. It looks so graceful and intentional.
Awwww thank you 😀
Thank you, perfect timing!!
You're so welcome!
Thanks for this great breakdown and helpful analysis. I’ll try it!
haha I still love you so much. I’ve progressed onto shorty’s lessons for park skating but you are still my roots. ♥️ thank you
Shorty is the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We met when I was teaching a class in Australia. She is the most amazing skater.
Best instructor EVER!!!! God you are just a godsend thank you
I appreciate what you do for us roller skate learners. Thank you very much Debra.
Can you please make a videos on how to use the big and small cyrcles drown on the ground? Thanks
You’re a great teacher. Awesome video
Glad you think so!
This lesson is great!!👍
Glad to hear that!

I really love watching your videos! I want to start learning how to skate correctly but I haven't skated in years
You look AMAZING!! And loving the skating tutorials, could you do some more at the skate park? 👀
I started to get frustrated with this transition, but now I know where I finally went wrong!! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try this transition out at the rink 😊

One of my friends was at your rink last weekend. I was SO jealous!!
No way! Maybe we met?
@@Dirtydeborahharry possibly 😃
you are soooooooo detailed, your the greatest !!!
Needed that! You keep teaching what, you're teaching loving you here in London UK.
Yay!

Thank you dirty, I ask for this video😀
What a great video! Thanks very much for sharing with us!

I didn't realize how much I needed to hear FINALLY, YOURE HERE. Sass to skate on 😂
Thank you Ms. Dirty! I loved this video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I noticed rollarskating is lot like ballet when transitioning. It helps me when I focus on a center and turn my head to that as I turn.
LOVE!
You’re so pretty, oh yah a great teacher too! Thanks
Hahahah follow the rules then break em all!!! I think I’m gonna like this channel
Hi Dirty! My cousin and I are heading to your roller rink this Saturday! Can’t wait!
Have fun!
Hi Deb, this is Telma from Portugal, I’m 33 y.o never skated before and I’m learning it all with you! I absolutely love your videos you’re a great teacher!!! Congratulations! Still can’t skate backwards though… 🤯
Thanks for the videos! BTW, you sure get bossy whenever you carry that stick.
You got that right!

Cracking up laughing I be going wide as freak 😂😂
my favorite skate chick ever!
Thank you very much!
3:44 "Are you going to purposely do things that I told you not to do".
Threatening Mommy.
it's universal. most new skaters want to skate backwards right away!
I noticed when you do it, you're curving into the transition instead of trying to place your feet completely 180° apart from each other. Fun fact: I got it 🎉! Mostly 😅
😀😀😀
Thank you! Great timing for me to practice this on Thursday morning. It’s something that I really want to do with confidence and panache but I’m doing that clunky foot thing you illustrated at the moment 😂 Now I know how to correct that.
👍 👍 👍
Is there a reason why you only spin to the left? Is there anything wrong with turning to the right?
I spin to the right. It just depends on which side you're comfortable with.
I spin clockwise as that was what was comfortable to me as a child. I can spin counter as well. I jump clockwise only. Most people jump/spin counter.
That is so hard😩and difficult I can not do that
You’re a badass❤️
Hey Dirty! Why haven't you posted where you get your leggungs??? You and I have similar physiques, so be a pal and share ❤
And...I have officially figured out my problem. I can skate an entire lap - if I'm going fast enough - on just my left leg/foot. Can not, for the life of me, keep my balance on my right...at all. Sadly, that's a medical issue, so it looks like I may be doing jump turns forever.
Ok.. I see.. I'm trying to do a 180° and it looks like you are landing at 135° and straigting up afterwards...
6:40 12:05
Man I love u lololol
Dang i got called out hahaha
Idk why I’m watching lesson #9 and I can’t even skate forward.
🤦🏽♀️
Getting new skates tomorrow.
How many times have I had to remind myself that it's not about moving the feet...? (Many. Many times).
