When I rec'd my Ariens 920014 (10 years ago) and primed it for the first time. The gas did start to leak. Thought something was wrong, so it was sent back to the supplier to check it out. There was no charge and they said nothing was wrong. It was because I primed it two many times. Now I only prime 2x and never had that problem again. After 10 years the engine just started surging. I added a little sea foam to the gas and now it runs fine. Thanks Donyboy73 for what you share. I hope people appreciate all the time you take to help us.

Mine did this after I re-built the carb and I was worried I had either done something wrong or that there was something wrong with the carb itself. I think you just saved me the trouble of tearing this thing down again!

Another great vid, Dony. What people don't realize or understand is that on a 2-stroke engine application...the primer bulb is just that. The bulb actually holds small quantity of fuel and moves fuel from the tank to the carb and back again in a continuous motion assuming the bulb itself and the lines are hooked up correctly and perfect condition. These large rubber bulbs mounted on the outside engine covers are what I call "puffer" bulbs. They do not hold any fuel nor do they move fuel. When pushed, they simply puff air into the float bowl chamber which forces fuel droplets into throat of carb and manifold. They do seem to work better and drip less if you fully close the choke first then pump the bulb.

Good one Dony. My daughter was worried when her snow-blower did this. I told her the primer mechanism was like a small squirt gun squirting gas directly into the carburetor air passage. Squirt to too many times and it will leak out.

@George Granlund I have a husqvarna st227 unfortunately I just discovered a gas leak, while moving it roughly 200ft. Only notice it, the last 15ft or so. It was dripping out and covered the left hand side tire, pretty good. As I was 15ft from where I was placing the blower, I immediately shut it off, turned off the Fuel. I noticed drain screw to carb bowl was wet, as well as the bowl itself.
Any idea what the issue could be..?
Much appreciated in advance, and thank you for your time.

I have a problem similar to this very informative video. The tank was empty when I filled it with gas. I did not touch the primer before I noticed a small stream of gas shooting out of the rubber primer hole. Then, while checking the air in the tires, I noticed the gas leaking down from the carburetor in the same area as you noted. So, I had gas coming out of both the primer and the carb. It continued to leak and eventually stopped leaking down thru the deck. Does it matter if the fuel cut off switch is off? Thank you very much!!

My garage was smelling badly of gasoline. So this year I’m like maybe it’s the carb. I see gas under bowl screw wet. So I decided to replace carb . The new one came with no screw and spring under bowl. Which I was nervous I got the wrong carb? Still nervous? I assembled the new one onto blower. It works fine! But still smelling gas in garage? So I didn’t replace gas primer. But with your easy video I will. My rubber is fine. Garage kept blower in winter and shed in summer. All rubber lines are still soft with no dry rot!
Even though blower is 20 years old !
I’ve never had an issue starting it! I run carb gas out after each use and shutting gas valve off!
Is it ok without bowl screw not on it? Or did I get wrong carb??

*THANK YOU!* I've been worried, too, about the leaking. And, just as you explained, it seems to happen when I primed it, usually like five times! I hoping that it's just my over-priming! Mine's a two-stage Troy-Bilt, about ten years old, and it's seen light usage and seems in good shape, but has a leak exactly like you showed. *Thanks again, you've put my mind at ease!*

This video is great and describes the exact problem I was noticing (Same Engine). I usually prime 2-3 times and have never noticed gas flowing back out from the intake side but after buying a new aftermarket carb online one prime seems to spew one pump worth of gas out the back side. Is there anything I can do to keep it inside the carb with one pump?

  • @Peppermint1
    @Peppermint1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I had it leaking because I was pressing wrong and too many times and the engine wasn't firing up easily. If it leaks, it's because it's not pressed right. Now I press only once and keep it there for 1 second, then quickly release it. Engine fires up right away every time.

Thanks for all the awesome posts. ANY CLUE why when I prime the engine 1st time this yr it primed way too much fuel? It was like the primer system wasnt drawing any air with fuel just pushing pure fuel. Every push produced a stream of gas. I took the carb off , checked the float, needle, etc. put it back together and seems OK. I was thinking too much gas in bowl? THis is an Ariens 24" with an LCT engine. Engine has been pretty good for 5 seasons save for a couple carb issues.

I have a question regarding my 10 hp Snow King snowblower. It has a feature where the auger lever will automatically lock on when it is released providing you have the throttle lever depressed. This is a great feature if you use the manual chute a lot. Alas, it will no longer lock on for me. I was hoping that you could point me in the right direction so that I could be a happy camper again. Cheers from the Maritimes. Thank you.

Great videos Dony! Thanks for putting these together! I have a question for you too. I have an Ariens 927LE sno-blower that I bought new in 2009. It has the Tecumseh engine. I had used it a couple times already this winter and has worked great! However, when using it today, it starts just fine, but after several minutes, it just dies. As if it's not getting fuel. Even though they didn't look dirty, I cleaned both jet plugs in the carb and also checked my spark gap. Still does it. Any good ideas you may have I would really appreciate! Thanks Dony!! Shouldnt I feel the primer bulb full of fuel? Or is it normal for it to just sound like air shooting into the carb? I assumed its not getting gas because it wont start. I replaced my fuel line and checked for cracks in the primer line. Cleaned carb last night. Thought it was starving for gas?

I have a craftsman snowblower with a Tecumseh engine. Model 640349 and a 5002 carburetor. It was not running right and leaking bad.
I replaced with a new carburetor and it started right up and runs fine. The only problem is gas still leaks out of the mouth of the carb after I shut if off and it sits. I have to elevate the carburetor side of the snowblower with a 2X4 under the one tire to keep gas from dripping out of the carburetor intake where the choke is. I have watched and after I shut it off it takes about 30 seconds then it starts coming out of the inside and runs out of the choke hole / mouth.
Is this normal and I wonder why no one mentions this problem.
    Thank you for your help.

Hello Dony,! My snowblower didn’t start and not knowing why only after one winter use. I figured out it was the gas and so I empty the tank and added a new one. In doing so I primed it more then enough times but I got it to start only to turn off seconds later. I noticed a gas leak and freaked out. Empty the gas tank again and let it dry. I filled it with gas, primed it only to have same issue. This time it didn’t start but I primed it again, yes, too many times. I haven’t tried again and wanted your suggestion. It leaked from the same area that you show on yours but how come it won’t start with new gas? I have a Troy built 2420 that I got for last Christmas. I need your help.. thank you for your time.

Donyboy73, is this the 10hp engine?
I bought a a 10hp Tecumseh off Craigslist, is has a "516" on the Carb, I know it is not the the original carb (the previouse owner told be he bought the carb new (but it doesn't look like what you have on the one in this video), will the carb work for me?
I am going to use the engine for on a logsplitter.
BTW the engine starts, only when I spray engine starter into the carb. Runs 20 secs I am VERY new to adjusting Though this 516 is the non adjusting carb you talk about in other videos.
Also, the Tecumseh Control Bracket Assembly is on the side of the pull rope housing BUT there are no wires or cables.
    Please advise, Mike

I have an Ariens with a Tecumseh engine and I smell gas coming from the snowblower when it's parked in the garage (winter or summer), nothing drips or leaks. Is that common? It's stronger than I'd suspect if it were just temperature-related expansion or something similar.

I always wondered about this. Although, I did have a leak on mine when I tilted the snowblower back. I found that the carb bowl gasket wasn't seated correctly and this was actually keeping the primer from working properly as well. Pulled the bowl off, smeared a little oil on the gasket and the bowl went into position nicely and got a good seal.

7 years later......I have this issue with my Murray snowblower. When I tilt it back, it leaks. Set it level, no leak. Can you explain the fix to me please? Much appreciated.

I have a power that doesn't work properly. There is no need for priming, but leaks gas even after changing the carburetor and pump. Any suggestions.

I have the same model. 1st time I used it last night the oil dipstick smelled like gasoline afterwards. Changed the oil this morning it had gasoline in there. again after use , dipstick smells like gasoline. I did prime it both times but I guess it’s a carb problem ?

Is it normal for fuel to leak out when you tilt the blower backwards out of the carburetor?

My fuel line was leaking in my snowblower so I had to replace it. Holy cow was that a pain to replace. I got the same inside diameter, but the outside was just a tad wider. I had a hell of a time snaking the line between the engine from one side of the blower to the other.

Hi Dony, I have a question on the NOCO GB30 you reviewed. Have you tried powering a small 12v compressor from it (either with an adaptor or directly from the clamps)? Will the booster pack send voltage or would the electronic protections kick in and cut the tension? Thanks.

Why would you need a primer in the first place since it has a manual choke? I thought that the primer systems were a replacement of the old chokes in older engines?

My mtd snowblower does that and dies unless I keep pumping the primer in a slower rate the motor keeps running if I stop it dies. Is this a stuck needle float? Just bought it and it's a mtd Trac 26/8 snowblower and also the blower won't do anything with the drive levers. Any ideas on why it wont propel itself forward or backwards? Just a diy guy here need help
