Happy Friday guys! It was interesting to compare two of the newest small SUV's you can buy today, we've also been noticing in our local DC area that we see more of the Kia Seltos on the road versus the CX-30. What is it looking like in your local area?
Redline Reviews you need to live with rotary controller. I thought it would be annoying in my CX-5, but it is so easy to keep your eyes on the road and adjust the screen when you get use to it. Looked at KIA, but no seat memory on specs in Australia and a general overall feel of cheapness, we bought a Mazda.
I’d take the CX-30, personally. I prefer its looks and interior and I’d be able to figure out the infotainment. That’s not a huge priority for me. And I actually like that it has a naturally aspirated engine since I enjoy the linear power delivery. That’s just me...🤷♂️
@Richard Favreau Smart choice. Those new Corollas look attractive too and heard they've actually made them fun to drive now. The new 2021 Corollas have apple carplay and android auto.
Yes. In the 2020’s you need wireless charging. Your phone can be charging while your daughter wants to use her phone to play music in the car since the parents have not so good music 😂😂
I know we can't compare, but I drove the Seltos and the CX-30 available in my country (Mexico), here, the Mazda is a bit more expensive but it is a much more upscale car, the Seltos feels more like an economy car and the Mazda has more of a midsize sedan feel to it. Feels twice the price than the Kia for about 10% more cost.
Over here it's slow compared to the Kia by alot lol so over here most people would prob pick it for that, the huge warranty and other basic things. Mazda sells shockingly low around here
If mazda CX30 is twice the price of seltos, I would gladly take seltos, and everyone will take seltos too. Even Though CX30 feels more premium and upscale, but doesn’t feel like twice the price, like the actual MSRP, it only feels 2k more. CX30 MSRP is almost close to Compact SUV segment, I would rather get Compact SUV which is a class above Subcompact SUV.
@@HungNguyen-ep7cq it doesn’t feel twice the price, which is clearly over exaggerated, just about 10% more, no more. Mazda is not a luxury brand, it’s not Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Audi, no massage seats, no digital gauge, no big 10 inch screen, there is no way Mazda feels twice the price of seltos. If anything, Hyundai is the one that feels twice of Mazda because of tech, futuristic interior design with digital gauge, blind spot view camera smart park, etc, Also, read my comment, I used “If”.
MAZDA wins hands down, exterior is so clean and nice and Interior is unmatched in this segment, just wished the plastic on the exterior were not that big, specially on the sides
@@robbrown6240 yeah I don't understand why they do that? Cheaper to repair if damaged? Cx5 has the least of it (cx-9 the same) so it's a bit more forgiving and not as much of an eye sore but yeah it's so ugly and I would prefer they didn't have that
I’m at 142k miles on my SkyActiv 2.5. My previous car had the 2.0 SkyActiv and I owned it up until 100k. They’re great engines and I can’t emphasize that enough
I really don't understand the obsession with touch screens. I've driven company vehicles with them and find that they can be frustrating while in motion due to trying to touch the right item and the ride motions and/or the road bumps causing mistakes and having to divert my driving attention. I trend to agree with Mazda and they are less safe while driving. I own a 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature, and once you learn how to use it, the control knob and buttons work well and you learn to work them by feel and it is less distracting. Overall I've been very happy with the several Mazda's I've owned. I wish the new CX-30 had cooled seats. a 360 degree camera with parking sensors and a 40/20/40 split rear seat. And IMO, the side cladding is too heavy.
Touch screen makes operating the system much easier, easier to control than non touch screen, imagine we still use old cell phone with number buttons, that would be awful. Also, it’s a lot more difficult to type address than just simply touch screen.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 Most people will probably use apple car play and use their phone to type in the adress to the maps but idk. I like touch screen if im at a stop but the dial will be more useful when actually moving
@@johnnymanela1283 Yep agree. I think the Mazda connect system is great. Simple and effective. Love the high quality nice feeling rotary controller and as you say no annoying finger prints on the screen.
I have a 2016 Mazda 3 and in the 4 years I've owned it, I may have used the touch screen 3 times. Like so many have said, the rotary knob is intuitive and works so much better. I have a touch screen on my lap top too, but don't use that either. A mouse or track pad do the job better. Just like someone else said, it would be like preferring using the buttons on your TV instead of the remote. Think of the rotary knob as your mouse or remote. That being said, it would be nice if Mazda kept the touch screen as an option for those that think they need it.
I have a '15 Mazda3; it took me maybe 3 days to get used to the rotary dial and I can say, without a doubt, I'm less distracted when I drive and use it. I think the idea of losing the touchscreen is just so foreign because of how mainstream it is in cars that most won't bother to consider it. I tell people who are looking for a new car to give it a shot, it really does work!
I own a 2019 Mazda 3 hatchback and the infotainment is so responsive and so fast that I really never had the feel to want a touchscreen ,instead the shortcuts are the best for music, maps , favorites and home and the display far away from the driver is more comfortable to look at.
Cesar478 876, these were only found previously (and currently) in luxury brands like Lexus, Mercedes, BMW & Alfa Romeo but then Mazda adopted this yrs ago...unfortunately majority of drivers are just not used to this type of system as touchscreens have been the norm in the mainstream brands that’s why people hated them (cause they’re not used to them) but if you really analyze it, there’s a reason that some of the luxury brands had this - simply more intuitive. However, the masses still prefer touchscreens that’s why the luxury brands had both the controller knobs and touchscreen feature enabled at same time. Wish Mazda did the same in their newer vehicles and not disable the touchscreen - give drivers the choice and not do it for them! I find the knobs intuitive...owned 3 Mazdas
@@specktacular14 The very fact that you needed 3 days to get used to rotary dial is where it hurts Mazda the most, and why they need to get their heads together and adopt touch screen ASAP.
.... but theyre the same price and everyone shopping for the mazda will cross shop the seltos and vice versa. Great comparison showing us in 2020 Kia is no match for Mazda. Great info imo
BUt its still jst a Mazda for most ppl... Yall mazda lovers view it with "premium" eyes... Uness you sleep/live in your car...no one cares lol The kias as of 2020 has a great exterior and interior...CHEAP transportation? lol.....
@@edkar7604 actually the Mazda is $2,800 more than the Seltos and how the Seltos is doing sale wise the depreciation is very low. While Mazda does have the nicer cabin their materials aren’t holding up very well, the 3 low mileage CX-30’s I went to check out had shiny leather steering wheel on the center and to the left side grip as if they were already wearing and the creases on the seats were very visible on the bolsters. All 3 looked older than my current car that has 90k on it. Looked at 1 seltos so far it had 7k more miles than the Mazda and it still felt fresh. Looking at a Tucson next and comparing them.
Your reviews are excellent. One thing that you tend to not mention is durability, reliability over time, and repair costs and maintenance. You know clearly that a naturally aspirated engine generally requires less maintenance, due to less moving parts and less stress and heat stress on the engines. For this reason alone, the current generation of Mazda's will outlast the Kia's.
I'd give this win to the Mazda. Just feels like it'd be less painful of a transition for me if I ever had to do an emergency downgrade into a cheap car. More quality interior. Piano black also absolutely disgusts me, so that's a big problem with Seltos interior 🥴
This surprises me. Hyundai and Kia does do a good job with their interiors though. The palisade for example I think looks more upscale than mazda's CX9. Kia should have done a better job with the seltos interior.
@@asdfghjqwertyu1858 yeah Kia and Hyundai are definitely best in category on the higher end vehicles imo. As for this Seltos, they wouldn't have to change A TON for me to like it. But they kept it cheap, it's basically for people that can't afford much better than a Soul, but they want AWD. People who buy this tier of cars don't care about the things we care about, and Sofyan cares about. They just want the mechanical benefits, and the warranty. In that aspect, Kia wins. But for ME and what I LIKE, Mazda wins w/ CX30 v. Seltos
Devon Gee not necessarily can’t afford but prefer to keep the budget under $30k. I can afford expensive car but that doesn’t mean I want to spend it on a car.
I do agree on the cladding issue on the Mazda for lighter color cars, but the overall style exterior, I like the Mazda and the interior blows the Kia out of the water. Mazda's transmissions has always been very good and even though people think 6 speed is boring, it is much better than all these CVTs and many of these wannabe dual clutch. The only reason Kia might win here is if someone has a family and need to haul more things more often. I think the Mazda style, exterior and interior, driving ability is better. Kia might have some better tech, but it is not that much to be honest.
I can't stand him bitch about the Mazda Transmission. Maybe they want to stick something that is tried and true. No one wants a CVT turbo charged cars.
I just bought the CX-30 in white. In Japan. With a diesel. I took a trip of about 70 miles through the mountains earlier this week and averaged 55 mpg. I sold my Volvo V60 to get this and have zero regrets. I loved the Volvo on the highway, but the turbo 1.6 around town was pesky and a pain to drive in Japan with its narrow roads. What I took away from this review is that it’s a pain in the bum to make cars for a world market.
For me, the CX-30 wins the looks category by a landslide. For the class and price point, I think you'd be hard pressed to find an automaker that does outward aesthetics and interior quality better than Mazda.
I went with the Kia Seltos SX Turbo (bought one a couple weeks ago), even in that starbright yellow (I really like it) with the two tone black roof. Really liked the way it drove and has all the features I was interested in for my move to Colorado. Much better than my aging 2011 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V.
I like the yellow! It's def not "vomit yellow" as he says, haha Glad to hear your good review, as I'm considering purchasing one soon, deciding between this and a Kona.
@@berliozchick Try and find an older Kona with a handbrake lever, the Electric Park Brake is the "Boeing MCAS system" before they got it sorted, lose you electrics and have the engine cut out and if its total electric failure, you have no power steering, no power brake, unstoppable without power assistance and, worst of all, no emergency brake because the button is now useless, have this happen and you have completely lost control of your vehicle and my mechanic agrees with me. This system used to cut manufacturing costs is a potential death trap.
Looks are subjective but IMO the CX30 is the best looking small crossover out there. The Seltos looks more utilitarian and it does very well in that capacity. I also think Kia screwed up by practically forcing you to get AWD.
I have a 2018 Mazda 6 - The touch screen function is never used on my behalf. The rotary knob works seamlessly for navigating around the infotainment menus, as such there is absolutely no need to touch the screen. So, Mazda is correct. On another note - My Sport with manual trim has nicer interior than that Kia does...
I agree. The rotary knob is super seamless to use even while driving. The touch screen IMO makes someone reach up to find the right icon to push on the screen. The knob is actually very quick and easy to use.
Test drove a kona, was set on it until I test drove a Mazda cx 30. The overall quality just feels so much better. Could have had a top of the line kona for 21k but got a preferred cx 30 for 23k.miss the moon roof but very satisfied. The kona just felt like another 'car', the Mazda feels special.
You get over the lack of touch screen pretty quickly once you get the hang of the dial and buttons. It becomes muscle memory like typing on a keyboard.
I have to disagree. Had a Mazda 3 for 7 years, and while the knob is fine for Mazdaconnect, it’s awful for CarPlay. I just bought a Tiguan and the touch screen is much better and safer because I spend less time staring at the screen seeing if I’ve scrolled to the item I want to select. I just tap what I want and look back at the road.
For me its the CX-30. I test drove the White Base model and was impressed by its drive quality and features for 22k. Didn't mind the cladding since in the area we live, the cladding comes handy. Cloth seats on the base CX-30 was really nice. Seltos, might have the nice 'front' and ground clearance, but the rest...yea. I'll take the CX-30.
If the Mazda is only $1k more after you factor in adding a sunroof to the Seltos, I'd think the Mazda is nicer and more than worth the slightly higher cost. Also, I think Sofyan suffers from the same problem a lot of automotive journalists have when complaining about engine performance - their perception is warped from driving so many performance cars. Both of these really are more than enough for the average driver. I'd be hard pressed to find a new vehicle today outside the absolute cheapest subcompacts that I would consider actually underpowered for daily driving.
I can offer a long term view, as we recently had two top of the line fully loaded cars, a 2018 Mazda CX-5 GT and 2020 Kia Soul GT Limited for 18 and 12 months respectively. We live in a perfect 100 walk score urban neighbourhood; Roncesvalles / South High Park, Toronto, Canada. With the ability now to work from home, we can now go days without driving at all. The CX-5 now felt too big, and for an only car the Kia Soul felt too small. We needed one car that felt just right, a “goldilocks” solution. We literally shopped the CX-30 against the Selltos. It was no contest for us. The CX-30 had all the space we needed and felt far more premium than the Kia Seltos or Soul. The CX-30 is far more engaging to drive in the real world. Being slightly smaller and lower to the ground it is also more engaging to drive than the CX-5. In the real world, you don’t constantly drive around trying to find the performance limits of the car. That’s not what Mazda is trying to do here. With normal CASUAL spirited driving the smooth power delivery of the Mazda engine and transmission easily out outclasses the more temperamental, though more torque capable Kia turbo dual clutch combo. The CX-30 is a far better city car, that fits far better into a premium urban neighbourhood. In terms of utility the larger interior Seltos wins easily for ultimate practicality. If you NEED all that space, the Seltos is a very practical Walmart style driving appliance. The Mazda by contrast is a premium machine, with obsessive attention paid to details. The Mazda is literally designed to feel like an extension of the driver. Mazda engineers the car’s responses to work in sync with the physiological responses of the human body. It’s not just marketing - it’s real engineering. The Mazda “horse and rider as one” philosophy works so well that you don’t realize it is happening, which is the ultimate goal of perfected design. It’s obvious only when it is removed completely, such as when getting back into the Kia. My last drive in our Kia Soul after getting our CX-30 further validated our choice. Having had the Mazda CX-30 for a week, the difference going back into the top line 2020 Kia Soul was even more stark by comparison. All I could think of while driving the Kia for the last time was “yuck”, and “so glad to be rid of this thing”. Equally important we found the Mazda dealer experience to again be far more premium than the Kia dealer experience, both for sales, and service. The Mazda is a far more driver focused car, with every driving detail far better thought out than the Kia “just get it done” attitude. I strongly disagree with you on the lane departure assistance of the Kia vs the Mazda. Yes, the Kia’s will keep you in lane while Mazda will not, but that’s how it should be. The Kia always feels like a passenger suddenly grabbing control of the wheel to correct the errant driver. It’s unnerving and seems borderline unsafe. Mazda provides lane departure warning via steering wheel vibration which the Kia completely lacks. This is far superior to a “driver interruption” system. . The Cx-30 does provide some very gentle tug back to centre, but unlike the Kia, does not try to take control away from you, which is exactly how a well thought out driver focused system should work. Both my wife and I are very happy to now be a Mazda only family. For both us, in terms of cars, and dealership sales and service,, the Mazda is by far the more premium ongoing experience. The Kia is something you do only if you have to. We’re so glad we don’t need the extra space of the Kia !
Something not mentioned in the Kia Seltos/Mazda CX-30 comparison is their off road and 4-wheel drive capabilities. Although obviously neither vehicle is meant for heavy duty rock climbing prowess, the CX-30 has an advantage over the Seltos in that, in traveling over a ravine while using only two wheels, the CX-30 manages to pull out a lot more effortlessly than the Seltos. Also, the Seltos’ dual clutch transmission overheats when pushed hard in off-road conditions. However, the CX-30’s 6-speed automatic doesn’t overheat even when pushed hard. The weakness in the CX-30 in this regard is the lower ground clearance versus the Seltos.
Just test drove the 2023 Seltos SX and the 2023 Mazda CX-30 Carbon Edition. Acceleration felt negligible. The Seltos 1.6L turbo was far more whiny and high-pitched noisy than the Mazda 2.5L. The Mazda felt like it had a more satisfying sound when stepping on the gas. The Seltos had more body roll and felt less stable than the Mazda, especially when taking a cloverleaf on-ramp to enter Interstate driving. Around here, it's a huge bonus during rush hour, being you're entering traffic traveling 75-80mph. Ground clearance, the CX-30 has 8.0in, the Seltos has 7.3in The Seltos had more cargo space. But we also have a Honda Pilot, so if we need to haul anything significant, or going on a family vacation - we won't be taking anything the size of the CX-30 or the Seltos. Appearance. The Seltos (and the Niro - as we tested that one as well) looks and feels more like a toy. Lots of molded plastic. Kia loves using odd textured molded plastic parts around various parts of the car, where it's on the front grill surround, around windows, across a good portion of their SUV line-up. The plastic cladding on the lower portion of the CX-30, while looking rather overkill, I much prefer, as it'll protect the paint on the lower part of the car when driving on gravel or dirt roads - even two tracks...a bit further off the beaten path of pavement. And for canoe fishing in some remote areas, this is a nice feature. It's one of the big features that was a deciding factor. Interior: The inside of the Seltos continues with the cheap and toylike feel and appearance. I do prefer Kia's touch screen over Mazda's dial/button interface for navigating the infotainment system, though it's not a deal breaker for us - we'll get used to it either way. Overall, Mazda has the interior nailed down in spades. It's so much more refined and comfortable - and if I'm going on a long solo roadtrip, I'll definitely want that extra bit of comfort. If you're looking to haul kids, then yes. You're going to want something bigger - and for that, I'd go with the next step up - a compact or mid-sized SUV. ...or even a full-sized SUV. The one place Kia is better, is viewing through the windows, but the CX-30 doesn't feel unsafe at all. It was definitely good entering and changing lanes on the interstate in heavy traffic, as well as navigating heavy traffic in town. Mazda definitely won us over, and it wasn't close. YMMV for sure - it's all subjective.
I wonder what percentage of Seltos sales will actually be the SX Turbo trim. Most other trims have much less equipment (cloth seats, semi-independent rear suspsension, halogen headlights, less ADAS, smaller engine, CVT, smaller infotainment, cheaper interior) than in any other comparison, the CX-30 is a much better driving and value car. The 2.5L, 6spd auto, and still leatherette and nice interior of the lower trimmed CX-30's would embarass the Seltos models with the 2.0L engine, CVT, and cloth seats. That being said, the Seltos SX Turbo is a great SUV in addition to the CX-30 and I've been interested in both for its looks and driving; I just wish Kia brought a better value proposition to idk, every other trim of the Seltos.
Tyler Young You can look at the ex seltos to compare which is still 5k less in my country to a comparable Mazda, with the Mazda having a few more features, the lower end seltos are significantly less than a Mazda so not sure what value issue you are noting.
Picked up my new Seltos AWD Turbo from Durham KIA here in Canada last night. It’s early days, but I’m loving it. Oddly enough, the other vehicles I tested were the CX30, the VW Tiguan, and the Kona. The CX30 was my second choice, but the Seltos won it on power, transmission, and steering feel/handling. Black on black leather (I think it’s synthetic leather, but it looks good enough and I love the cooled seat feature!). PS - I can’t abide that puke yellow on the test KIA. it does the car no favours. Go for black, dark grey or dark blue!
Mrs Farzana The experience so far has been very good. I don’t drive it hard, and am pleasantly surprised by the excellent fuel consumption - I’m averaging, over the first 2000 km, 7.8 L/100 km (30.2 US MPG). The Dual Clutch transmission can be jerky at times, but only very rarely, and at parking lot speeds. The Bose sound was better, once I adjusted the bass/mid/treble to my liking. Seats are comfortable, and I’ve used the cooled seats a lot this summer. One major inconvenience, at least to me, is the auto stop/start feature. I don’t like it, and you have disable it every time you drive the car. The Rain Sense wipers work great, as do the Auto High Beam LED headlight function, which is great coming home from the cottage at night. And if you need to pass a car, the 60 km to 120 km acceleration is excellent with the 1.6 Turbo in the SX I only use the Heads Up display occasionally, but it also works well, once you set the height you like. Very handy, the HUD also has the blind spot monitor, a great feature. And, for a sub-compact, I think the Seltos is the biggest one out there. Yup. Overall, I’m very happy. Oh, and also, no delivery faults at all!
Thank you very much sir for the information. I'll test drive this one & HR-V back to back. But I like this more as a new vehicle, more up to date & for not having a CVT.
I have a 2020 CX-30 and I absolutely love it. Interior space is not a priority for me; I'm the only one riding in this car. I love the looks of this car, inside and out and surprisingly every friend I've shown this car to actually likes the thick black cladding ( I have the nice Polymetal Grey paint ). Hey... Crosstreks don't exactly spare the plastic either. I drove them both.. the Mazda was a no-brainer for me. It feels like a more mature car to me. My favorite exterior part of it is the front end styling... I happen to like the chrome expression Mazda has given this car. I do not miss the busy looking fog lights from my previous vehicles... the headlights on this car would blind the sun. I have no problems with the engine power in this Mazda... I don't drive my car like you did in this test. I did not want a 1,000 speed or CVT transmission and I certainly did not want anything with a turbo... period. Sometimes, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' goes a long way. I'm not a jackrabbit-start kinda driver but I do like to drive. On the interstate, this car's drive train is a completely different story. You're going 85 mph before you know it... that's how smooth this car is in real-time daily driving. It's very serene on the open road. I actually like the BMW-esque rotary knob for the different functions... I'm not having to take my eyes off the road to do stuff... exactly Mazda's intent with this setup. And I really do feel like I'm driving a small Lexus-ish car, every time I get I get behind the wheel. And my car smells SO good inside. I have had my CX-30 for 3 months and I have not seen another one on the road since I got mine. But, auto sales are not good in my area due to this virus... a lot of dealerships are just closed for now. I will mention again that everyone who has seen and driven my car loves it... we're talking BMW, Mercedes and Audi owners. I think I have a pretty damn nice car and it's a joy every time I drive it.
If I'm keeping something short-term (leasing), I'm going with the Kia. They've been killing it lately with the styling, the tech, and the standard features! However, I'm hesitant on the long-term reliability of the turbo and transmission given their history w/ the Theta-II engines and the dual-clutch transmission failures... If I'm keeping it longer term (which I typically do for cars), will take the Mazda any day. Proven engine and transmission and fantastic styling! Why change something if it isn't broken? Maybe there's a reason why Toyota bought a stake in the company... Great review as always!
Mazda’s always been the underdog but give them a few more years and I think we will start seeing their sales sky rocket. It’s inevitable cause their vehicles always perform well and are gorgeous. I agree, there’s a reason why Toyota invested in them. They see it coming too.
Ayush Malpeddi Except for the DCT clutch is warrantied as a wear item excluded from the 10 year powertrain warranty. Likely to be an expensive issue down the road if you do a lot of city driving and often get stuck in rush hour highway gridlock that will wear out the clutch.
This was not a great compassion trust me I have a cx30 And a lot of things he says negatively I don’t disagree with I have it over a year first batch it’s a great car never feel under powered never feel sluggish and if features are excellent Kia cannot touch it
Great job on a comprehensive review! Definitely disagree with you about touch screens though. We have a 2016 BMW Z4, and a 2020 Kia Telluride. Using the control knob in the Z4 (same as in the Mazda) is MUCH easier, nicer, and safer than the (newer, obviously) touch screen in the Kia. Making selections on the touch screen is slower, more difficult (especially on non-smooth roads), and far less safe. I agree with Mazda’s use of non-touch screens. We’ve had a few Mazdas and they were very good (B2000 truck, MPV minivan, MX-5 Miata (NC), and my daughter had a previous generation Mazda 3. This is our first Kia so hopefully it’s as reliable as the Mazdas were; they certainly are killing it on the styling and features.
You can't really beat Mazda's style lately. I hate the plastic cladding but damn that interior and body lines are killer. If only they had a coupe for sale.
I tested both and watched many reviews and bought the CX-30. I completely disagree with the Seltos being quiet and sure footed and so do many other reviewers. The Seltos is great, but feels cheaper in feel and that adds up over time. I went with car and driver on this one where the Mazda was number 1.
Yo same, it was a little annoying since I'm someone that likes Mazdas, but I think he just wants better execution from Mazda if their vision is to be this "budget luxury" car and they're cutting back in places. In contrast, the Seltos SX is just trying to be a baby Telluride.
As scotty kilmer would say, smaller engines with turbocharger/supercharger works harder and breaks faster. So madza for me. (But I'm totally biased as I own a few madza) 😆 🤣
"I don't like it", so tired of testers with no regard for real world driving, real buyers needs and total disregard of maintenance/reliability issues. Non turbo, relatively big displacement with a conventional automatic in the Mazda. Translation, less stressed engine, no overheating DTC in traffic or if you take it on a trail (see some "off road" reviews with transmission temp warnings and smell of burned clutch material) all pointing towards more reliable package. I am looking at the Mazda, this is number whatever review, so much fluff and "marketing" info out there, yet so little real world info. I guess these are the times we live in.
Mazda with that STUNNING interior in the CX-30 higher models with leather, just so so gorgeous! The CX-30 with the leatherette or higher is a nicer interior than the damn BMW & Lexus. Also the exterior look, way better on the Mazda hands down.
Sorry Sofyan, I respect your style choices most of the time, but this time I can't go with your choice. The Mazda is gorgeous, whereas the Kia screams of Range Rover wannabe with none of the brand appeal. I mean I don't hate it, but it's far too fussy. I do however agree with you on the Mazda's side cladding, it ruins the clean design. (I may be biased owning a Mazda 2/Demio)
I'm usually not a yellow guy but I actually like the vomit yellow here. It's more of a mustard with the faintest hint of greenish. Idk, I only know the 16 colors from Windows 95.
I appreciate how Mazda has its own cool unique look instead of just doing a good job of copying others. Driving dynamics are also always better than all of the other Asian brands.
I leased a 2021 Seltos SX for 3 years and absolutely loved it. It’s a very solid vehicle, and the interior doesn’t feel/look cheap by any means. I checked out the CX-30 as well. The biggest problem was the lack of space as it’s a tiny vehicle. The backseat is only suitable for small children. I had the Neptune blue SX turbo and got tons of compliments on it.
@@skiran69 Although I live in south east asia and things are way different here, I just bought a seltos and couldn't be more satisfied. Test driven the CX-30 before making a decision too, btw. Costs $10.000 more here but definitely didn't feel like it.
@@skiran69 I'm a "kid" (17) and I love mazdas cause they're fun to drive. Adults would prefer comfort and efficiency over the fun factor, no? Over here mazdas are basically for kids
I bought that exact SX 1.6 Turbo in that gorgeous yellow & love, love, love it! It handles so very well with plenty of power! It's loaded with very cool safety features galore! The touch screen with verbal command navigation & phone calling anyone on my contact list is such an easy breeze! The adaptive cruise control is amazing, it's actually semi-autonomous driving! And a whole lot of space for a compact car!
Mazda was doomed from the start with this review. The plus side to having a non touch screen is that you don’t need to clean it. The rotary button is easy to use like luxury vehicles. 😳
You are right. He don't like mazdas. The cx 30 is superior and more reliable. Like most of them he focus on the entretainment piece oh is "8" apple this banana that". You like turbo,? The mazda turbo is 250 hp.
I’m blind man can see that the Mazda looks better! So looks is always in the eye of the beholder change because I have nothing to say good about the Kia styling styling
he keeps saying the cx30 just looks like a lifted mazda 3, however the idea of Mazda is to really preserve the side profile of the mazda 3 which explains all the plastic cladding.. and plastic cladding isnt bad, it protects your car actually.. it is really designed to look like a lifted mazda 3..
Yeah new Mazdas look and feel a lot more premium than other brands in the price range. I kinda like the new Kia K5 but this one is just overdone with design elements. All the busy body lines, those headlights and turn signals with tons of little lines and chrome bits and folds ... it will get old fast.
I would say the Mazda looks the nicest. To my eyes it has a cohesive and clean design yet still distinctive. For me the Kia is fussy and somewhat tacky.
I was a fan of redline reviews then eventually found his reviews too middling and never watched his videos for the past year. I tried it with this review, but again, it didn't give me the data I want. Sofyan spends too much time on the exterior(when you drive the car, you can't see the exterior of the car....and beauty is too subjective to spend this much time on), especially on lighting, cladding and paint job (we get it, you don't like puke yellow paint and plastic cladding), spends an inordinate amount of time talking about stiching and hard plastic vs soft plastics. Spends a lot of time griping about non essential features like heated steering wheels, cooling seats, power lift gates and whether your seats are made out of nappa leather or not. Doesn't spend much time about: - The driving feel - The lights, if you're going to grip this much on lighting, maybe you should have a segment on how well they light up the road. - The transmissions - The handling with the tire difference and the suspension differences - The engine feel (turbo vs natural aspirated) - Noise and vibration - He never takes it for a real ride, just driving in boring everyday traffic (highways and regular roads) - Never talks about pricing more than in a superficial way. - Never talks the differences between trim levels in a meaningful way. I guess I'll stick with my holy trinity, savagegeese for car mechanics and his insightful (if overly pessimistic) commentary on their place in the market, Alex on autos if I want to learn everything about the car plus his insightful scoring system and chartsand throttle house for boy racing enthusiast reviews. These guys put the car through it's paces, in their own way.
This comment hits the nail on the head and I agree 100%. I have watched Alex and Savageese and they both go into great depth and cover most meaningful information on every vehicle they review . I wish they all learn from each other and provide high quality content esp the driving dynamic of the vehicles the cover we all expect . If they want to a to hit the bell and subscribe savageese
Most people don’t like Mazda, that’s why their sales aren’t good, on the other hand, Hyundai and Kia have been doing well in recent years and sales are going up.
Great comparison. I am currently weighing up exactly these two vehicles. Have test driven the Kia (GT line) and liked it very much, still need to see the Mazda in the flesh. Oh, and the top spec Kia has heated/ventilated seats, heated steering wheel and HUD here. Why the heck isn't it an option in the US. On the flip side, we have fewer colour options, no current white roof option only cherry black roof for the two tone look and only with white or the yellow.
Mazda is prettier, but in terms of tech its dated compared to the Kia. Most people in this segment want latest tech, enough space, decent engine, good looks, good reliability - Kia ticks all those boxes.
Out here (Australia, New Zealand market) the Seltos comes in a few different trim levels, the most basic is actually great value if you can live without the top end tech. So, if you're happy to swap the 10.25" infotainment for an 8" with no navigation (you can use carplay/android auto for maps etc.), only get 16" wheels (which are actually quieter on the road) and not have blindspot/crossing traffic warning, swap the 1.6L turbo with a DCT for the 2L CVT. It only costs around US$18,000 including tax, which is far cheaper than anything else in the category.
Im here in Aus too and genuinely looking at the Seltos as my first new car. I'm upgrading from a 2001 rodeo so, not looking for top of the line tech but mainly overall comfort, space for my dog, and value. This seems to be a winner!
@@hayleyemma7953 That's a bit of a change, from a Rodeo to a Seltos...you'll save on fuel. My mother bought a Seltos a couple of years back (around the time I would've been watching this video), it's a nice looking car and hasn't given her any issues.
There is no way I'd take a tiny turbo engine with a DCT over a larger naturally aspirated engine with a traditional automatic. Plus the Mazda is a lot more premium looking inside and out. Frankly I'm surprised at your choice.
Lol even the base 2020 Corolla L for under 20k gives you multi-link independent rear suspension, one touch up & down windows on all 4 windows, and USB and 12 volt power port in the center console. All of which are missing in certain Kia Seltos trims.
Great review and really informative. I find it strange KIA US decided not to offer a full range of heating and cooling options in the Seltos SX. A missed opportunity to add further value. Canadian model of Seltos SX comes with front heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and heads up display.
Kia and hyundai is a "budget brand" they were extremely unreliable when they first came to the US, if you want less problems, you stay away from them, but if you want bang for your buck, then go for it :) Don't get me wrong, they have beautiful vehicles. Just not higher quality like mazda
Great video Sofyan! If it were my choice I'd go with a top spec mazda3 instead. I love the sleek look of the hatch! I think this jacked up version slightly spoils the look
My first choice was the Kia Seltos. However, it’s now Summer 2021 and the Kia Dealers in the North East are now selling their Seltos for $4,000.00 over sticker price. So, I bought a Mazda CX 30. They even knocked $500.00 off the sticker price. Quite happy so far with my purchase.
I’ve watched several of your car reviews and generally agree with your outcomes but for some reason on this review you sound rather biased against the cx-30. Even when you find something positive to say about the cx-30 it has a negative undertone. Sorry, but you do not sound like your giving an honest review.
I own the 2021 CX-30 and have zero issues with it. For daily use especially during Winter months the CX-30 has proven worthy. I'm a huge Jeep fan so take my advice when you consider the Mazda CX-30 as definitely a good option.
Happy Friday guys! It was interesting to compare two of the newest small SUV's you can buy today, we've also been noticing in our local DC area that we see more of the Kia Seltos on the road versus the CX-30. What is it looking like in your local area?
HR-V is the King in my area
I see the same blue Seltos everywhere I go lol but it bothers me that it has halogen headlights.
I obviously like the seltos coz i own one.lol
seen two cx-30s one Seltos so far. austin texas
U complain about the engine but that engine put 3 Mazdas on the Consumer reports most reliable list. There were NO Kias on that list.
I got used to the infotainment on my 2014 Mazda 3 anyway. It’s not hard to use once you start playing with it
Me too
the infotainment is amazing once you learn it! i cant imagine going back to a touchscreen
William I love u
You don't need wireless charging when you are plugging in your phone to use apple car play. Wireless charging is overrated
I think wireless android auto make more sense.
Great point! I think it only makes sense for the passengers! That way there isn't a heap of wires :)
Yes. In the 2020’s you need wireless charging. Your phone can be charging while your daughter wants to use her phone to play music in the car since the parents have not so good music 😂😂
I use the wireless charging in my car all the time.
I wonder what these non wireless Apple car play systems will do when the future iPhone comes without ports......?
@@IReahpZz You're obviously biased in favor of Kia and no, the Mazda is not slow. That's a powerful engine in the Mazda.
@@blackwhirlwind1245 read the comment again dude, don’t you see the 10% price discrepancy?
@@HungNguyen-ep7cq it doesn’t feel twice the price, which is clearly over exaggerated, just about 10% more, no more. Mazda is not a luxury brand, it’s not Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Audi, no massage seats, no digital gauge, no big 10 inch screen, there is no way Mazda feels twice the price of seltos. If anything, Hyundai is the one that feels twice of Mazda because of tech, futuristic interior design with digital gauge, blind spot view camera smart park, etc, Also, read my comment, I used “If”.
I own a CX-30 and I appreciate the fact that it still lets me drive without having to worry about the steering wheel pulling you in each direction.
Well even in cars with lane assist, there's a way to turn it off.
It’s not as intrusive as other systems are...which is actually what they all should be! Meant to aid drivers...not the other way around!
Braeton Wilson it has lane assist tho 🤷🏻
MAZDA wins hands down, exterior is so clean and nice and Interior is unmatched in this segment, just wished the plastic on the exterior were not that big, specially on the sides
Not hands down. In some ways it's nicer in some ways but I would take the Seltos (if you compare models of the same price).
I agree don't like the black plastic. I got the cx5 because the black plastic is less pronounced
@@k8chillx Its ugly as hell, there is no reason it should not be body color painted.
@@robbrown6240 yeah I don't understand why they do that? Cheaper to repair if damaged? Cx5 has the least of it (cx-9 the same) so it's a bit more forgiving and not as much of an eye sore but yeah it's so ugly and I would prefer they didn't have that
I agree with the cladding I bought it in a black paint so its not so noticeable. Although we will see how the cladding fades over time 💁♀️
I’m at 142k miles on my SkyActiv 2.5. My previous car had the 2.0 SkyActiv and I owned it up until 100k. They’re great engines and I can’t emphasize that enough
The L-series engine with it's torque at low- to mid-engine speeds suits me in City driving.
Why did you get rid of the other at 100k? Did it fail or did you just want a new car?
@@adamz4737 well, I guess larger displacement. 2.5 > 2.0 🤔
@@majhestiq12 yes but I'm wondering whether the car broke down after 100k or if he just wanted a new car. Engine size has nothing to do with that lol
I'm driving my third Mazda 6. I love the dial. Not finger prints and just makes sense to me.
Doug made a solid statement regarding to this. Well both have pros and cons.
Not to mention touchscreens are finger print magnets and you see all those smudges! Just look at your iPads! I prefer the controller knob!
I like how your intros are and not the basic "what's up everyone."
But how many twinkies can you melt in the glove box? 🤪
He’s a journalist not a ‘tuber!
Mazda is to the premium side cant really compare the 2 honestly. One has a more upscale feel the other is still built for cheap transportation.
.... but theyre the same price and everyone shopping for the mazda will cross shop the seltos and vice versa. Great comparison showing us in 2020 Kia is no match for Mazda. Great info imo
BUt its still jst a Mazda for most ppl...
Yall mazda lovers view it with "premium" eyes...
Uness you sleep/live in your car...no one cares lol
The kias as of 2020 has a great exterior and interior...CHEAP transportation?
I mean I have a feeling the seltos drives much better with that extra power. But I get the argument for the mazda interior for sure!
Seltos
@@IReahpZz Extra power? Mazda has 10 more hp and Kia has 10 more torque, not a big difference.
Daniel Kim I feel the same way I am not a fan of eight, nine and ten-speed automatics. six speed is plenty for me
I prefer the Mazda to the Kia. Kia just seems more busy. I like the handsomeness of the exterior.
Yup . For me the CX30 is one of the greatest looking crossovers around . The Seltos looks cheap and unrefined besides the CX30.
"Poverty-spec" bruh, not everyone can afford to lease a Porsche Cayman and never drive it lmao
I completely agree. He can be such a pretentious, millennial queen!
Brandon Stephenson ‘‘twas only a jok relax
He has a habit of coming off like it's an offence to be poor..
I can't stand him bitch about the Mazda Transmission. Maybe they want to stick something that is tried and true. No one wants a CVT turbo charged cars.
Ya'll need to chill, I was just dragging him a bit lol
Mazda is ugly now days
Claustrophobic and really poor visibility in the cx-30
Yes, and the wonderful metal knobs feel great when you touch them.
Even in BMW's I prefer using the center knob over touch screen. I always liked Mazda's for having something similar.
Great point. You can't review a car fully when you haven't had it for long to get those nuances down
I have to disagree.
I’ve had my mazda (2018) and it drive like new and no issues. I’ll take mazda all day long
For me its the CX-30.
And the touch screen. But yes, Mazda is better
Mazda just kills it with their interiors.
Steve E another feature that’s standard across all of the Mazda lineup now is rain sensing wipers!
CX30 has a better rear end IMO
Mazda way more elegant and interesting
as mazda doesn''t carry its upscale lines like lexus, acura, genesis, .... they don't need to downgrade mazdas.
and has already done it is proof
Remember guys this review is just his opinion/preference. Go drive each one for yourself and see in person what works best for you.
Ok genius thanks I hope u know that we all know that
This felt like a Mazda bashing fest lol
I’m all for the Mazda ♥️
I like the CX-30 hands down!!!
Sounds like a snooty neighborhood.
Mazda did it I think 🤔 that Mazda found there identity
Ground clearance, the CX-30 has 8.0in, the Seltos has 7.3in
The Seltos had more cargo space.
Mazda, better looking and no usually horrendous and shady Kia dealership experience
Are Kia's dealership not good?
If I’m single I’ll take the Mazda. If I have a small family it’s the Kia.
Whya??
Mazda cx30 hands down
I wonder what percentage of Seltos sales will actually be the SX Turbo trim.
How's the experience so far?
I'm also planning to buy one.
Mrs Farzana
The experience so far has been very good.
Watching this from Australia. One of the best presented and most comprehensive reviews I have seen. Well done and many thanks. 👍
I have never got a heart from redline reviews
You sure? :)
@@theredline thanks BTW your huge fan
After I got my first one, it made my week. 😁
Cx30 is awesomely cool
Mr. Moose I sure hope so because they are so underrated.
Mr. Moose first they need to hire a new marketing team as the current one is garbage
🙋 Mazda for me. Love love love it. My next vehicle
SAAAAME!!!
This was not a great compassion trust me I have a cx30 And a lot of things he says negatively I don’t disagree with I have it over a year first batch it’s a great car never feel under powered never feel sluggish and if features are excellent Kia cannot touch it
@@Eelgnotsa I hate the brakes on mine
Great review. I disagree on the Mazda info screen I think it bring further back and non touch is just safer and less distracting.
The answer to which of these to pick is none of the above. Get a Mazda 3 hatchback AWD instead.
@Jonathan McCully i think you never sat in a new mazda 3 am i right? Because it feels really upscale and premium
@@nikita.8637 Mazda quality control is bad.
They all of the CVT transmission... no thanks.
The Mazda is by far the more attractive car but you have to taste to recognize it.
wtf 🤣
You can't really beat Mazda's style lately. I hate the plastic cladding but damn that interior and body lines are killer. If only they had a coupe for sale.
Mazda never fails to make a suv with larger footprint feel cramped inside.
Mazda has terrible packaging. Maybe related to how insanely well it did in crash testing.
I'm sure that had to do with there design language.
I tested both and watched many reviews and bought the CX-30. I completely disagree with the Seltos being quiet and sure footed and so do many other reviewers. The Seltos is great, but feels cheaper in feel and that adds up over time. I went with car and driver on this one where the Mazda was number 1.
We've been saying for years but Kia and Hyundai have really been stepping their game all the way up and they're not slowing down anytime soon.
aesthetically atleast. resale/trade in value will always be the number 1 reason more people wont buy these brands
Regina Palisano am average consumer really doesn’t care about that
I feel like I am watching a KIA commercial.
Yo same, it was a little annoying since I'm someone that likes Mazdas, but I think he just wants better execution from Mazda if their vision is to be this "budget luxury" car and they're cutting back in places. In contrast, the Seltos SX is just trying to be a baby Telluride.
He’s really biased for Kia in all his reviews
Sofyan loves Kia and Hyundai and will always choose Kia and Hyundai when doing comparisons.
The Kia is better.
@@cody5293 but remember he owned and loved his Miata 🤷🏽♂️
As scotty kilmer would say, smaller engines with turbocharger/supercharger works harder and breaks faster. So madza for me. (But I'm totally biased as I own a few madza) 😆 🤣
I recomend stop listening to Scotty Kilmer because he only considers one thing: reliability.
I like how everyone says mazda but dont buy mazda sadly
I prefer the Mazda. I’ve seen Seltos on the road and I think they will look cheap sooner and Mazda will look elegant and classy for many years.
Totally agree., own a Mazda 3 hatchback 2019.
In terms of styling :
front- mazda
Side- kia
Back- mazda
Mastered infotainment system on my CX30 in just 3 days. Super easy.
The ‘protruding’ chrome under the CX-30’s headlights is more about the recessed headlights than the bumper assembly.
Why don’t you compare the Kia with the standard engine to the CX30, rather than the turbo?
I leased a 2021 Seltos SX for 3 years and absolutely loved it. It’s a very solid vehicle, and the interior doesn’t feel/look cheap by any means. I checked out the CX-30 as well. The biggest problem was the lack of space as it’s a tiny vehicle. The backseat is only suitable for small children. I had the Neptune blue SX turbo and got tons of compliments on it.
Selto is the best CUV in subcompact category.
Lmao.. enjoy dissapointment.
@@skiran69 Although I live in south east asia and things are way different here, I just bought a seltos and couldn't be more satisfied. Test driven the CX-30 before making a decision too, btw. Costs $10.000 more here but definitely didn't feel like it.
@@masterplokoon4855 mazdas aren't for kids.
@@skiran69 I mean, with how cramped their backseats are, they definitely are. Maybe that's why you love them so much.
@@skiran69 I'm a "kid" (17) and I love mazdas cause they're fun to drive. Adults would prefer comfort and efficiency over the fun factor, no? Over here mazdas are basically for kids
I prefer the Seltos 🥰😍🤩😎 Good job Kia! You and Hyundai have been killing it lately and don't show any signs of slowing down! 🔥
You should clean it regardless. Still collects dust and germs.
You are right. He don't like mazdas. The cx 30 is superior and more reliable. Like most of them he focus on the entretainment piece oh is "8" apple this banana that". You like turbo,? The mazda turbo is 250 hp.
Mazda looks better
I’m blind man can see that the Mazda looks better! So looks is always in the eye of the beholder change because I have nothing to say good about the Kia styling styling
he keeps saying the cx30 just looks like a lifted mazda 3, however the idea of Mazda is to really preserve the side profile of the mazda 3 which explains all the plastic cladding.. and plastic cladding isnt bad, it protects your car actually.. it is really designed to look like a lifted mazda 3..
How can you say that the Kia looks better than that Mazda, I thought that you had better taste for cars bro 😶 come on seriously 😅
Yeah new Mazdas look and feel a lot more premium than other brands in the price range. I kinda like the new Kia K5 but this one is just overdone with design elements. All the busy body lines, those headlights and turn signals with tons of little lines and chrome bits and folds ... it will get old fast.
The Kia does look better. The CX30 is literally just the Mazda 3, which is fine if you want a hatchback car.
I was surprised too but looks are subjective, the Kia is more practical but the CX30 is a beauty.
@@robburcham6289 Very true Rob. They both look good to me, just in a different way.
Doesn't spend much time about:
- The driving feel
- The lights, if you're going to grip this much on lighting, maybe you should have a segment on how well they light up the road.
- The transmissions
- The handling with the tire difference and the suspension differences
- The engine feel (turbo vs natural aspirated)
- Noise and vibration
- He never takes it for a real ride, just driving in boring everyday traffic (highways and regular roads)
- Never talks about pricing more than in a superficial way.
Thank you finally someone has said it. Compare the vehicles gives the numbers etc...
I’d rather go with the standard Mazda 3 hatchback offered with AWD. It’ll age better. These crossovers are a trend that’s going to die eventually.
This comment is going to age poorly
Crossovers arent going any where soon buddy
Wrong if you slap suv on any car it starts sell 10 times better.
Tampa0123456789 I would not say 10 times better, but at least sell better than sedan. SUVs aren’t going downhill any time soon.
You can't fit 50inch tv in a sedan bro... Try moving out and having a sedan. Lol
Love that Yellow on the KIA.
I have to admit. Both Mazda and Kia are head turners nowadays. But I choose the Mazda because it looks sportier.
I just bought a used 2020 CX-30 and LOVE that it doesn't have the giant screen and that its NOT touchscreen
cx-30 hands down better looking and the interior is way better!
Sofyan is a Mazda basher hater 😒
Most people don’t like Mazda, that’s why their sales aren’t good, on the other hand, Hyundai and Kia have been doing well in recent years and sales are going up.
Sofyan hates Toyota even more.
true story
Interesting. Most people used to consider him a Mazda fan boy a few years ago.
I love the star yellow color on the kia.... I prefer the 2L non turbo and cut trans... The seltos is a beautiful suv
Which will be discounted more??
heated steering wheel available in Canada for Mazda.
Mazda is prettier, but in terms of tech its dated compared to the Kia. Most people in this segment want latest tech, enough space, decent engine, good looks, good reliability - Kia ticks all those boxes.
Fix the steering wheel, Kia.
And get a new badge
A new badge? Who tf does that 😂
those things are selling out like hot cakes. Think they are doing just fine.
Kia sells, unlike Mazda unfortunately

You failed to mention that with the Kia, if you get the front wheel drive version you lose the independent rear suspension
@Der Schwindel True. But no version of the Mazda gives you IRS.

Kia and hyundai is a "budget brand" they were extremely unreliable when they first came to the US, if you want less problems, you stay away from them, but if you want bang for your buck, then go for it :)

I agree. I think he need to disclose the fact that he was paid by KIA because this review sounds like paid commercial.
I own the 2021 CX-30 and have zero issues with it. For daily use especially during Winter months the CX-30 has proven worthy. I'm a huge Jeep fan so take my advice when you consider the Mazda CX-30 as definitely a good option.
