  • GM 6 cut was used between about 1968 and 1996 and used a fairly standard procedure for taking apart the locks. I detail that here.
I split this into two videos, you can find the process of taking the lock apart and decoding it to make a key here: • GM 6 cut Series Part 1...
As always, I am by no means an expert so you may have other tips/tricks for doing this and I may have goofed on one or two explanations or whatever, so no refunds.
    THX
ps: uhhh, I forgot to edit the end of this video, my bad ;) I ain't re-uploading it tho

I can see the GM lock supply company also hired someone to twist springs together before putting them in bags. Ruko also have someone doing that

assuming you are a locksmith in the field and happen to have a kit with numbered wafers. In the circumstance where the numbers aren't on the wafers in the lock you are making a key to. You can compare the wafers with the ones in your kit for an exact read. This will also work in the circumstance that the numbers have just worn down to the point of non readable.

also, I recommend a springloaded center punch. you can get them from harbor freight. one of the only places you still can. You can put from tabs down for those replacement housing caps much easier. and safer on the hands. trust me.

Hi Jason! I will be doing a rekey on a door lock for 1990 Chevy c1500. I have a GM 6 cut rekey kit, will that work even if it's a 10 cut? Also, will I need to remove the cap or do I need to remove it and have it re-peened?

10 cut didn't start until 94 as I recall so you should be good with the 6 cut! (but no, it is different wafers for 10 vs 4.
Most 10 cut doors had a easy to pop off facecap, especially if its in the handle style

@@thewhittierlocksmith121 6 cut you will really need a replacement cap! There is that tool but I hear it’s very finicky to use and still look ok afterwards

The first time I ever saw a locksmith do locksmithing was on one of these keys. He called out the cuts from looking at the key hanging from the ignition, and afaik, he also cut the key by sight, with nothing to set for each cut. He just cut the key and opened the door like magic!

what year models does this correspond to? I'm looking for a u tube that explains how a 2006 truck door lock can be rekeyed

06 probably uses the B106 or Z keyway which is not this at all (and in fact easier to DIY)
It might also Possibly be B102 or GM 10 cut which is similar.
Once lock is out the cap can be non destructively popped off, clip removed, and plug slips out
