- The Lishi key cutter can be used to duplicate keys and also cut your own from blanks to pin up a lock. I recommend buying the original Lishi as others may not work so good. I have cut hundreds of keys with this tool and it shows no sign of wear at the cutter.
It truly is a great tool.

People always forget that originally all this stuff was done by hand like this at first. I feel like it's a cooler way and a semi lost art these days. A machine would only be really better if ur making LOTS of copies to save time.. this can be done at a site immediately with no need to walk to ur truck and carry a machine around. Plus in cases where u don't have power access or end if world scenarios its good to have this tool and know this hand made method.

Yes, I been using mine for a few years now. Takes a bit of practice the more paracentric or "wiggly" keys but I have made some fantastic copies. Glad you like it.
Thank you, Al! I have wanted a punch-type key cutter since I saw one, years ago. Of course, when I could afford it, they were missing. I recently learned about the Pak-A-Punch, and hey! gotta get one! Those disappeared a year ago or more. So, I will try to get one of these. I will say, being nearsighted makes key work easier! I was watching LockPickingLawyer, mostly about Master. Eventually, the topic of Lishi tools came up. After a number of those, TH-cam decided to show me this vid on the side, so I clicked it. I appreciate your showing us this!
My pleasure. The lishi key cutter is absolutely fantastic after some practice. I have gotten to the point now where I can cut a key with it that looks machine made and works like the original. Of course it works best with flat keys like Kwikset but you can learn to cut the more paracentric keys also. I made another video showing how I do that. Check out vid #377. Also glad to know YT is actually helping me. It feels like no matter how good I get I still don't win the popularity contest. I hope you stick around and maybe even help me get noticed. That works well enough indeed. Copy looks quite fine and works properly 🙂 It's a lot cheaper and more quiet than a normal key cutter. Probably the way to hold the keys together can be improved but it already is practical and very easy the way you demonstrated it. Thanks for sharing Big Al 👍
Works like a champ. Yes, another clamping device could work but locking pliers are very popular, usually available and holding them gives great control.

Awesome, take it slow. Remember keys need to be quite accurate to work right. And my best advice would be make sure you buy lots of blanks. Get extra because you will need some practice and possibly ruin a couple. I know I did. Feel free to email me or whatever if I can help in any way.

Would this process work with the smaller keys like for mailboxes and padlocks?
I have cut MANY padlock keys with it but I am not as familiar with mailbox keys. So long as they flat bladed it should work great unless it's a warded lock.

I just ordered one. My plan is to use it to make sets of depth and space keys. It would be great for making bump keys as well. I have a caliper and can spend some time making my cuts to factory sepcs. Thanks for the video.

When decoding for key cutting, if the depth is "in between" (2) gauge numbers
(ie) The pin is reading between depth #4 and #3.
Do you use the top depth gauge number (4) for key cutting?
On this type of gauge I used here, I keep the key perfectly vertical and slide it across till it stops and thats the number. Hope that helps
Way Cool. I live overseas and lost some back up keys. The local key shop said he doesn't have US key blanks. I was able to order what I hope are the right blanks. I order this tool and try to cut them when they get here.

You got that cutter mastered. Banggood sent me one a while ago. I used it and it work pretty good. I since gave it away having a couple key machines now but kinda wish I still had it.

Hi, what can I do to fine tune the duplicate? When I turn it, I find it has more resistance than the original. It does unlock, but the action could feel smoother (I am working off the original key).
Personally, I would throw it away and make another one. This is why I highly recommend making a few practice keys before actually using one. It takes practice. You could try some very fine sandpaper and try the match the cuts a bit better.
I just got a cutter but didn't think just to clamp them together! Your Vids are done very well and are enjoyed here!

I’m having hard time trying to get the keys aligned properly so I can make accurate cut with pliers. Any tips?
Sorry for late reply. Maybe try setting the bottom edge of both keys on something flat to align them and just align tips by eye while clamping with vise grips. Trust me, this takes practice but you will learn how to do it great. My first few were awful, now I find it very easy

Perfectly safe. The cutting edge never gets on top the original
how many type of key in your list?
I have cut several types but obviously just "flat" keys like Kwikset, schlage, Master lock, and Abus to name a few.
Will this Lishi key cutter do all types of pin tumbler keys ?
I have only cut Kwikset, Schlage, Abus, Master lock, several car keys and a few similar keys. If you watch video 377 I show how it gest a bit more tricky when cutting anything paracentric or "wiggly". It's best used on flat blades but absolutely achievable cutting others with practice. I hope this helps. Seriously a great tool to have
I have had a shit time cutting a key for my lock. I figure I need to replace it, as it is a BHP lock with a kwikset key, and even the original key doesnt work very well.

Sorry for late reply. Yes, that called a key gauge. You can find them on CLK supplies among other places. They are VERY useful.

this is the first video Ive seen on lishi key cutter that shows double punching kwikset keys. this is how I’ve been doing it for the last few years. Only differences I don’t know if tolerances are different in kwikset and defiant but I always find I have to make exactly 4 passes with a file on each cut after cutting with lishi for keys to work smoothly in lock. And it doesn’t seem to mater if the lock is a smart lock, factory pinned or lab pinned.
One other thing I prefer to use thats a little different is I use a jewelers lowell hand vise in place of vise grips. Vice grips tend to slide keys when clamping do to the clamping mechanism used in vice grips. Wheres on hand vise the jaws close parallel making it easier to line up keys.

Can't these do automotive double sided keys? They aren't brass so would they still cut keys
@@rs-nk8cf I have cut residential, motorcycle and car keys with it. Just depends on how flat the key blade is. But yes 👍.

@@rs-nk8cf I don’t mind the questions. I can’t testify as to how long they last but I have had mine for several years now and other than a dirty handle it looks brand new. It’s really a simple design. It just clips keys so there is not much wear and tear. I suppose if you used it several times a day for a while it would wear. But it’s truly a remarkable tool. I highly recommend it. Just keep in mind it does take a bit of practice to get it down. And they are no match for an actual key machine. But I have already saved friends a lot of money. One guy had a hard time getting his Harley key duplicated so I ordered some blanks and made him a few. They work great.

Impressioning requires very small amounts of material removal each time during the process using a very fine file. I would impression a key that way first then maybe use this to copy the key for a cleaner cut.

I buy a lot of that stuff from CLK Supplies. But I got my American / Master lock re-pin kit from Mr. Lock. I hope this helps.

I got my Lishi key cutter from Amazon years ago but you can also find them elsewhere like lock pick mall. Thanx Gumby. Get many extra keys to start and try a few Kwickset first to get the idea. The harder ones are like the Yale because of their shape but with practice comes perfection. For them I use several smaller nips each time to go with curve then clean up with light sandpaper. Works a treat. Machines are nice but their not pocket size and power free.
A KW1 key for a Emtek lock?
Emtek is just that display I got from a locksmith to display different locks as seen fit

I paid less than $50 US and I must say, it's a fantastic tool. I have been using a couple years and no signs of wear yet.
if you use the lishi and have the numbers of the pins and size of them can you make a key or do you need the original key! because this is part of the lishi and i think it should work with the lishi.
I would either go this route or use a set of space/depth keys.

I paid for keys to be cut at Home Depot and they didn’t work. I filed them down and they worked. I used the files to make one out of another old key I had for my house I sold. I have a couple of them and I made a key that works in my door here 3000 miles away just filed like 3 parts down. Need to get one of these so I can experiment more

A key machine is fantastic. I mentioned that in the video. But this tool is also great. It fits in a pocket and doesn’t need battery or plug in.

Just keep in mind it does take a bit of practice. Once your comfortable with the process you can copy all sorts of keys. I have used it to cut house keys like Kwikset, Schlage, and Yale to name a few, flat bladed car keys, padlock keys etc.

Hey Big Al, I think I already know the answer to this question but if you don't ask you don't know for sure! If you had the key bitting but not the key could you still use this cutter (another words can you cut by code)? I'm thinking NO, but want to make sure.... Thanks
Yes I can and I have. I simply use keys with cuts I need to copy the code number. Example, first cut is a 2, I use a key with a 2 cut and cut it. It's not as easy as a machine as I mentioned but with some practice you can cut one. I may do another video showing that in the future.

@@AlbertLebel I'm trying to finish my first key by filing it down by hand. Just really happy I didn't stick the key before it was filed down in a lock that was in use because I probably would have ruined the lock by getting jammed.

@@AlbertLebel I bought it to make the chip key for my F150, then program it, so I don’t have to pay $100 for redoing the chip ignition key :). Hope I can do it :)

You are spot on. That would work a treat. I tried using the markings on the tool itself but they don't work very well.
Great technique! I got a cutter (I think mine might be a knock off), but I have yet to use it. I hope to be able to do more for my customers with it and small cabinet/file keys.

Make a jiggler bump key with a y11 key, I made one that's modified and has cuts on both sides, one side opens y11 the other side opens y12-13- AND 14, LOL

If you're using this to cut a key to a code, you'll need space and depth keys for tool alignment. I just keep a bunch of blanks cut to 11111 to save me from having to nip any 1s. The tolaranes are so sloppy on SmartKey locks that you probably don't even need to cut those.

It’s one of my favorites. Works so good after some practice the keys will look machine cut.
You're right - the lishi key cutter isn't really good - crimps the keys on big bites, pretty poor at nipping for precision.
I tried this technique to copy keys - either it cut too little or too much. Had to resort to filing the channel cuts more clearer to make it easier to insert the key into the lock.
To copy the key properly, I resorted to using the cutter's centerline to determine where to make the channel cut. Then I used the gauge on the cutter to determine how deep to cut. Then I'd cut one number less deeper and file until the channel meets the cut depth.
It takes practice. I suggest getting several keys and learning how to use the tool before making a “working “ key. If you line it up like I show here you will cut an exact copy. Take it slow. You can learn how to do it good. 👍
