The “black tower” is called the hussar tower. It is called the hussar tower cos the little tower sits on the roof of the church like a hussar on his horse. Because it sits on the middle of the roof it had to be built from a light material (usually wood). This particular hussar tower has a red copper cladding to whitstand the weather that’s why it appears to be black. Besides its decorative function it serves as an access point to the middle of the roof in case the roof needs repairing. It also houses the smallest bell in the church which was sounded only when someone (important) passed away :)
@@NorineF Hungarian language sources are abundant of course 🙂 Just one addition: the small bell of the hussar tower has a whole in it because it was shot in WW2 therefore it was removed and is exposed in the church.
We spent 4 days in Budapest in December and loved it. Visited some of the same places. Some of our favorites were the Jewish Quarter, Parliament, and the Central Market ...and of course Christmas Markets.
Ernő Rubik is a Hungarian engineer. He used to teach on the Budapest University of Technology (Gellért square). He turned 80 this year. Ha was in his 30s when he invented the cube and still lived with his parents. He's a really lovely person.
Thank you for bringing back Happy memories of Budapest and walking so much. Wonderful history, brilliant views and fantastic food. Plus the gorgeous indoor Market.
I went to Budapest not long after the Berlin wall came down, so over 30 years ago. I recognised lots of the places you went to but it looks much wealthier now - it was all a bit run down looking when I was there but was still beautiful

No she didn't, but probably someone like you made her do that, like it was a thing. There's Pari(s) and "Pairis", there's Budapes(h)t and "Boodapest". Nothing wrong with that.

Sadly, if you wanna have the authentic Palinka experience, you probably won't find it at any fancy place in the city. It's supposed to be a strong beverage but that doesn't mean it should taste like alcohol. Good quality home-made stuff is in a completely different league, and you can get that in almost any village across the country. Trick is, you don't go window shopping for it, just try to talk and connect to people, and there's a good chance they will offer to share theirs with you. Or at the very least, they will point you to the right place to get it.
This little black tower (on the top of Matthias Church) is a knight's tower, named because it sits on the ridge of the roof like a knight on a horse. Hussars' towers, also seen on other churches and public buildings, became fashionable from the 13th century. Since it sits on the ridge of the roof, it has to be light, so it is built of wood and given some kind of showy and resistant covering, often shingles or slate. Our little tower has an elegant tan copper slate roof. This slender tower houses the church's seventh and smallest bell, the soul bell, which weighs only 50 kg. The soul bell is used to announce the passing of a soul.
The whole of Europe is steeped in history. The more one understands the historic background, the more one understands the European soul and the way of life.
When Michael Jackson filmed here (Budapest, Hero Square) the videoclip for History song he stayed at that hotel (and then he stayed there another two times).

I think it is the time to visit. But beware from the tourist magnets... there are so many other options outside from the "downtown". It is just a five minits walk from the border of the "downtown". There are great foods at the first floor of the Main Market Hall, and in the Buda side, the market called Fény utcai piac (Light street market). You can spend a lot of time just walking in the heart opf the centre, and see the buildings. There are a lot of sights there, also!! You can find everything outside from the tourists districts - usually the tour guides walks on there. Just take 1-2 stops with any public transport vehicle, and you find in a never-seen-by tourists part of the city. There are very good restaurants there, usually cheaper than in the downtown.
@@darylnogo3279 imho Budapest never was a capital iof an empire. It was Wien, in the 18-19th century. Budapest was merged in 1873, so until then we just can say Buda, Pest and Óbuda, the three part of Budapest.
@@zetor2Kit wasn't just only Vienna, there were two capitals of the Monarchy and the second one was Budapest. It's the reason why Budapest had developed so much in the second part of 19th century- it was one of the capitals of the empire.
Not only You where paying the tourist prices but possibly got some "tourist quality" pálinka as well. Pálinka is at least 50% alcohol so yeah it has a kick, but it is made out of fruit so You should be able to smell and taste the fruit.
Authentic Hungarian pálinka never reaches the alcohol level of fifty degrees. Forty-eight and forty-six degrees is what the Hungarians drink and the alcoholic taste is not so dominant, so you can feel its fruitiness. Unfortunately, tourists don't get what we "natives" drink!
Hello Cara and Jeremy. Back when I toured Europe, Hungary was behind the "Iron Curtain". I certainly missed out. So beautiful. I did get to Vienna, the other historical imperial capital, but I really should plan a trip to the bits of Europe I missed. I recently saw a Brett Cooper report from Budapest, but I preferred this one. I learned French and German in my English school, but you could not really get a language course in Yorkshire dialect to converse with my nan, but I spoke it at home, so no problem.
It was great seeing you guys! 🍻 It's funny seeing what you guys were up to just hours before our meet up. You were walkin' all around our hood. 😂 We only just left Budapest for good, and we're going to miss it for sure. 😢
1:40 Saint Stephen. The state founder. The traditional depiction of King Matthias has a laurel wreath on his head. The reason for the popularity: the last time the country was stable and legally ordered during his reign. After his death, a continuous crisis followed the Turkish wars. His nickname is Righteous. His coat of arms shows a raven holding a ring in its beak. This is the coat of arms of the Hunyadi family. He came from this family. Hungarian churches are live churches, not museums. This is how religious activities happen. This main function always comes before serving tourists. 11:28 I recommend a simple and traditional cocktail. It's not really trendy anymore, but it's extremely refreshing in the summer. This is the fröccs ( cca splash). It has two components: sour wine and carbonated water. Its name depends on the wine-water ratio and the quantity. 11:48 the inventor of the ballpoint pen is Hungarian, László Bíró. There are places where the invention is called biro. 12:59 Being canonized requires more than being a king. There must be some kind of miracle attached to it. In the case of Saint István, the miracle was that his right hand remained intact after his death. It's in the basilica.
A címer amit mondasz Mátyás király fekete seregének a címere. A holló a levelet a szájában vitte Bécsbe. Koppány, István nagybátya viszont a pogány életet szorgalmazta. Sarolt is a fiát támogatta.
Mátyás királyhoz fűződik Szent Gellért neve is.
A hollós gyűrűs címer Mátyás címere. A Hunyadi családnak oroszlános a címere. Bécs sosem tartozott a Magyar Királysághoz. Hiszen evvel a pápa világi hatalma növekedett. Aztán mások is beleírtak.. Szóval nem irigylem a kutatókat. Manapság vitatják a történet több elemét, pl magát Koppányt is.

My dear, that small "black tower" at gothic cathedrals is called "the hussar tower" and it means hungarians took part in the building of that gothic cathedral!😊 (the colour doesn't matter, the site of the tower and the size of it is the secret) Of course, in Budapest this gothic cathedral from the castle was totally built by hungarians, but take a look at other countries' gothic cathedrals, and you will find in many places that "little extra tower" on the roof, showing that hungarians took a part in the building of that gothic cathedral! Now, these are secrets...the secrets of gothic cathedrals are interesting.
You switched up Buda and Pest at the beginning, the Buda side is where you stand (Castle with hills) and the Pest side is the flat one with the parliament.
The church called Mátyás, but that's King Stephen's (Stephen I.) statue next to the church. The founder of the state. You can recognise him from the gloria on his head. He is literally a saint - according to the Catholic church.
The Hussar Tower is the black (actually try dark brown) little tower is a copper-covered wooden structure was added to the church by Mr. Schulek. The Tower sits on the spine of the roof like a Hussar sits on his horse. During the renovation of the church, a time capsule was found in a copper barrel. The barrel’s content is displayed in the lower room of the tower. In 2013 two new capsules were placed there, but their content is a secret, only descendants will know its content.
At the place of Holy Trinity in the castel you can see Matthias curch, the statue of The Holy Trinity , the Fisherman's Bastion and the statue of the horseman is King St. Stephen's - Szent István who were the founder of the state of Hungarians at 1000, and who lead the hungarian tribes into christianity. Church: Knight's tower is the black one in the middle of the roof ridge. These type of towers were built from the 13th centuries all over Europe's cathedrals. These are in the middle of the roof so it should be light weight, often made from wood. This one is has a tanned coper covering.
12:12 I was at that basilica in 2008 and saw a woman on the grass verge there walking a ferret on a lead (which seemed odd). Only years later did I see 'The Big Lebowski' and realised she was probably a fan of that film, in which some Germans do it.
Ferrets are pretty cool just in general (as long as you don't tangle some raw meat in front of them), and you can train them. I wouldn't say they are very popular pets, but it's not uncommon.
Too bad you guys haven't tried 'Langos', the fried bread. The best one is sold at Lehel Piac, Lehel open market, the one closed to the elevators not the one by the end of the market. If you want good tasting and quality palinka, go into any supermarket and buy a bottle or two at low prices. Looks like you got the overpriced, tourist version. You must try Hungarian wines. The red Egri Bikaver (Bull's Blood from Eger. Eger is a Hungarian city) is world famous. So is the Tokaji Aszu which is a sweet dessert wine. Thank you for pronouncing Budapest correctly. Glad you enjoyed yourselves.
Budapest is the unity of Pest, Buda and Óbuda. With the food, I don't uderstand why was mushroom in the pork, cuz I think the hungarian peoles don't really use it in stew. There are mutch more interesting easter eggs in the city center. I'm glad, yall enjoyed here.
The "word" shocked sells a lot of YT thumbnails :) Still, it only underlines what a hole in people's minds has the 20th century made that discovering there's actually a lot of nice stuff in Central and Eastern Europe is "shocking". For instance, almost all the biggest magical-royal-castles-on-the-hill are to be found in the Eastern part of the continent and not the West, the grandest being the one in Buda(pest), Prague and Krakow, three royal capitals of the old and once powerful states (although Poland seems to be coming up lately) - nothing really comparable to them in Paris, London or Rome. Also, nearby Slovakia might just have the biggest number of castles per capita in Europe.
And one more thing. I bet those 2 palinka cost 20 euros and they left them on the table. Such a waste. Not sure they were good ones but still. That is blasphemy in Hungary. It is so strange to me, that palinka is strong but far the strongest liqueur, in restaurants the spicy dishes are spicy but not so much and still foreigners always find them too strong and too spicy. A typical and good palinka is about 42-47%, not so strong. Pepers in Hungary placed between 0-9000 on the scoville scale, not so hot. But i must admit a paprika from Hungary about 5-6000 punnished me more than any habanero with 200000.
@@real2143 above 52% is not pálinka. Just tasted alcoholic drink. Quality pálinka is under 52, but above 42. Plums have very high sugar quantity and good a is ratio. Still you cannot make at the first evaporation more Than 50-52% regardless how good the mash was. But basicly IT is about 45-46% and about this alcohol quantity got the best taste, mildness etc.
1:10 There is no deeper meaning behind the "black" tower, most gothic cathedrals have them. It is clad in copper because these tiny towers are made of wood, not stone, as the roof structure could not support a heavy stone tower. The wood obviously has to be protected from the elements, hence the copper cladding. As the church has just been renovated and the copper is still relatively fresh, it has already turned from its initial copper-metal sheen to this brown stage. Within a few months or years, it will slowly take on the final turquoise green of old copper, like the green of the Statue of Liberty. This stage then lasts "forever" or at least many decades, until the copper is so thinned by weathering that it has to be renewed again, and American tourists will certainly speculate about the meaning of the "black" tower once again …
Originally there was in this church 7 bells from all it was a smallest 110 pounds weight bell in this tower what used only at funerals. It demaged in the ww2, today downstairs able to see it in the building.
I am glad you had a good time in Budapest, but visiting too many bars and not the best ones, you missed out on quality hospitality eg. I practiced this in every country in Europe and I had a wonderful holiday. Good luck with your journey and must say that it was really nice to hear you practice German 🇩🇪 . (Your grandma would be proud of you)
The original goulash soup is not made from beef, but from lamb. The word Gulya means a herd of lamb, unfortunately, for the past few decades, it has been mostly made from beef in restaurants. It is also delicious, but lamb meat is much more authentic and tastier. You'll find these more in the countryside, and don't miss the paprika chicken or the "fisherman's soup", which is paprika fish soup with vegetables and tomatoes. All are good spicy or sweet.

❓Mi az a kis fekete torony a Mátyás templom tetején❓ De sokat hallom ezt a kérdést idegenvezetőként! Érdekes a története, most beavatlak benneteket is.

Thank you so much for explaining this, I wonder how you know all this? Just curious. Lovely, bless you.
@@NorineF Hungarian language sources are abundant of course 🙂
Just one addition: the small bell of the hussar tower has a whole in it because it was shot in WW2 therefore it was removed and is exposed in the church.

I went to Budapest not long after the Berlin wall came down, so over 30 years ago. I recognised lots of the places you went to but it looks much wealthier now - it was all a bit run down looking when I was there but was still beautiful
The small black (or dark brown) tower is called the Hussar Tower. It’s a copper-covered wooden structure added by the architect Schulek and meant to sit on the spine of the roof like a Hussar on his horse.

You pronounced Budapest well. I appreciate that.

Exactly...🎉
Whoaaah!! The artist who made the little rhino statue is my brother! :DD 😍

Then it's time for a fantastic trip.

My dear, that small "black tower" at gothic cathedrals is called "the hussar tower" and it means hungarians took part in the building of that gothic cathedral!😊
(the colour doesn't matter, the site of the tower and the size of it is the secret)
Of course, in Budapest this gothic cathedral from the castle was totally built by hungarians, but take a look at other countries' gothic cathedrals, and you will find in many places that "little extra tower" on the roof, showing that hungarians took a part in the building of that gothic cathedral!

Oh thank you!
The King you mentioned in the beginning was King Stephan the Saint.

You ate the paprika and drank the palinka. Now you are honorary hungarians
Adorable puppy!! Btw 36 $ for that drinks was a PURE ROBBERY!!
@@georgschrotten622well, then you should go to a hungarian family from the country-side, and try their palinka! It is VERY strong!

One correction for the Chapters. 2:03 Its called Buda not Buddha :D
Also you are cute. I subbed
It is the equestrian statue of King St. Stephen of Hungary!
From a lesser person that would be a patronising and pretentitious comment, as is it from you....
Originally there was in this church 7 bells from all it was a smallest 110 pounds weight bell in this tower what used only at funerals. It demaged in the ww2, today downstairs able to see it in the building.
No the statue is of Steven, the first king of Hungary.

Wait a minute....are these guys brothers
I am glad you had a good time in Budapest, but visiting too many bars and not the best ones, you missed out on quality hospitality eg. New York Coffee House and Párizsi udvar representing beautiful architecture and history. I just returned home from Hungary and as the sayings
“you must eat where the locals eat” if you want authentic Hungarian food 🥘 famous wines 🍷🍾and lovely cakes 🍰 . I practiced this in every country in Europe and I had a wonderful holiday. Good luck with your journey and must say that it was really nice to hear you practice German 🇩🇪 . (Your grandma would be proud of you)
1:41 It is the statue of king Saint Stephen...
Thanks for letting us know!
0:14 as one who lives here, my fav place is the national circus, also known as the parliament
The opposition parties as their biggest clowns...like the failed green party, momentum or the communist ( all three the same)😂😂
Every hat off to you for making sure to pronounce the city name with the "sh" sound. Thank you.
Gulya is a group of cattle, Bandi. You should be aware of it.
No, "gulyás" means a person who takes care of cows and bulls on the medow. So the soup rightly owns the name!
Search for the word "gulya" in the Google image search engine if you have no idea what you're talking about...
gulya is a herd of beef
hahah you are not right
Buda is a hill side Pest is a flat side
Why are you shocked ? What did you expect ?
Thats enough, too many visitors going to these shi*hole pubs, seriously, you have 24hours and you must visit one of these? If a future visitor read this please do not! You going to visit one of the most culturally important city between west and east, south and north, don't waste your time, if you are an alcoholic, do not show it to viewers...
❤🤍💚👋
You are t alking on the Buda side. The Parliament is on the Pest side.
Michael Jackson filmed his videoclip 'History' in Budapest. This is it: th-cam.com/video/qw0D_KN2KN8/w-d-xo.html
What does an American woman think about the world outside of America when she is shocked by the beauty of Hungary?
i think you are starting to see europe is better
There isnt really 'jewish district' in hungary, Budapest has no districts ethnically or religiously monotonous like say 'chinese quarter' in usa cities. Jewish minority is present however.
Gulyás is a soup ... period .. it is a shame that all other places it is a stew... Come on people !

❓Mi az a kis fekete torony a Mátyás templom tetején❓
De sokat hallom ezt a kérdést idegenvezetőként!
Érdekes a története, most beavatlak benneteket is.
Goss mich Anton Zechenter in Ofen 1724.
The Matthias Church is not gothic but neo gothic style.
Oooh i am from Hungary. Seeing the name of the video.. is it good shock or is it bad shock???🤔😅😂🤣
