  • When they sit for too long they get picky. Also, you forget how to tune them! lol
    So it usually needs choke, didn't need it this time. Funny at 115°F, right?
    Was running rich because was tuned for spring weather. Stalled on throttle crack because of pumper arm adjustment. Also float needle sticking open due to gummed up seat/needle from sitting == too rich.
    Once it rich stalls it's impossible to start for 5-10 mins because of the conditions inside the cylinder. So I waited and came back, this time with air filter off just to test.
    Test ride was horrible because I leaned it out too much with pilot screw and leaving air filter off. Will try it all over again after oil change and brain reset.

    2001 BRP here, second owner to my father in law who didn't ride it. He ordered it from the dealer uncorked with the HO kit. What a bike! I live and ride in the southern Canadian Rockies so my fuel mixture could be adjusted every few minutes as I climb and descend. Sometimes i wish for fuel injection like my buddies have but then I wouldn't have a Pig would I?

      When I rode the mountains in SoCal I would reach under and adjust the mixture screw (fuel on XR650R, air on my YZ250) every once in a while to adjust for altitude. Makes a difference! I think on the XR650R it also wanted the idle bumped up or down depending on the conditions. The TM40 I have makes it easy. But I know what you mean, sometimes I wish for EFI. I kinda would rather do it myself with mega/microsquirt tho.

    Ok, you just legitimized my desire to rely on the kickstand while I try to kick the BRP. I just bought a 2002. What beast to kick over! I have been using the recommended starting technique, similar to what you were doing. Can you share info about your fork set up and triple clamps? Do you like them better?

      First, the key to making this thing possible to start is a Mikuni TM40, the rest is tuning. I hope you have one too, the stock carb is designed for EPA restrictions and should go in the garbage as far as functionality is concerned. Kickstand and mount are plenty strong as long as the bolts are tight and not corroded. It ain't no aluminum stand street bike, lol.
      Forks are bone stock with bellows removed. They are puking massive amounts of oil out of the seals even after a crappy rebuild. 20 year old seals don't cut it, lol.

      @@mjodr Gotcha, I should have looked closer. At a glance I thought you had upside down forks. Mine need rebuilt and refreshed and rear shock is blown out so that needs done as well. I am going to remove the carb to clean it but I think it is a Keihin. The bike was professionally set up years ago and lots of upgrades so I suspect the carb is upgraded or different but won't know until I get it out. I will research the TM40, I like Mikuni's and have had them on other bikes. Thanks for the tips!

      @@traviswillis4491 As long as it has a pumper circuit you are winning half of the battle. This single cylinder likes a big shot of fuel when you whack open the throttle. Otherwise it is lean for a few milliseconds and doesn't feel crisp.

      Me too Peep. Uncorked and rejetted mine is an animal. No need for more power at my skill level, and at 50, my “hold my beer, watch this shit!” Days are over! I was a little perplexed at the constant “clear out” on decomp until I read on about the pumper carb. No experience with one at all, but I’d throw $100 on the table I could start mine in any condition, cold or hot in two. 95% of the time first whack. Anyhoo… let’s all be glad we own one of the finest pieces of two wheeled awesome ever built! Long live the BRP!!!!

    Can a lectron work well on these

    • @mjodr

      I've rebuilt this carb 3 times and the float/needle still sticks open then I ruined my custom drain so all I can think about is trying a Lectron instead of ordering another TM40. I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'd have to forget everything I learned about the Mikuni, though.

    And the point with this video is....? Btw...strange way to start a 650!

    • @mjodr
      @mjodr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a well known starting procedure for this bike with a pumper carb. There are several critical steps to ensure a nice atomized mist of fuel gets in the cylinder. I've been using this method on this bike for 30,000+ miles over the last 10 years. The point of this video is to show what happens when you let a bike sit forever, forget the carb settings, and things just don't go right.

      @@mjodr Ok...my XR650R starts at the first kick....

    • @mjodr
      @mjodr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@543helge So does mine, 99% of the time, just not in this video. All the slow kicks you see are with the ignition off to clear and then prime the cylinder, get the piston past TDC, etc. The final kick with the ignition on it usually fires. Do you have a high compression piston, bigger cam, and TM40 pumper carb? This motor is not stock.

    • @mjodr
      @mjodr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@543helge Here's the procedure you are seeing on this video that I never explained and is probably confusing you because you may never have seen it before. This is a well known procedure that I found over 10 years ago when I bought the bike and worked for me commuting on this bike 100 miles per day for 900 billion start ups.
      IGNITION OFF, GAS ON
      - 2 or 3 "clear out" kicks while holding compression release lever
      - 1 priming kick, whack throttle open during the kick, pumper carb squirts gas in the cylinder
      - release compression release lever and slowly kick until maximum compression (TDC)
      - hold compression release lever and kick just 1" past TDC
      FLIP IGNITION ON
      - One gigantic huge kick and it should fire
      I'm not the only one who uses this cool procedure, and again this motor is not stock. If it was stock I could probably be lazy and basic and just kick it "normally".

    If it was running good why making adjustments?

    • @mjodr
      @mjodr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wasn't. It was tuned way too rich for spring weather 45 °F cooler. I let it sit for ~6 months and had to find the tune from scratch. Usually I am tuning slowly and constantly as the weather changes day to day and week to week. My bad.

    Sounds lean

    • @mjodr
      @mjodr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every time I think it's lean it's actually rich and I flood it out. One of the main reasons it was too rich this time was because before this start up the last time I tuned it it was 75 °F. This start up was at ~112 °F. Hence, rich.
