  • Got a NEW old Honda XR650L? Or maybe you got an old one? Well, here are a few tuning tips. It is all about intake and exhaust! Got a variable exhaust? Add back-pressure! You can always use a little high-temp JB Weld! See my comments as I add them. I am not perfect, but I am getting better! I have a plan! I was gonna call this video, "Motorcycle Tuning for Dummies", but it just comes off wrong. Like, Share, and Subscribe!

    The breather storage tanks can have a very small effect on how your bike is tuned, but it is not a big deal. So it is perfectly safe to tune the bike without the breather storage tank then later on, but it back on, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

    I had recently used epoxy resin from JB weld to re-tune the bike. It was totally okay. Alright, it was a little rough starting, but otherwise not an issue. This happens to a lot of people. Their bike is not tuned for a specific RPM range, or temperature. In my case, the low end was not tuned quite right. Did I care, no! It was fun. But you will learn that there is a reason that I know all this stuff. It is because I try stuff. I spend the money and learn. Like college, only the learning is faster and there is less travel expense. What did I do? I tried to quiet my E-series tail pipe. How did I do this? I put a ring of epoxy inside the pipe end. Shaped like a volcano cone. Like Diamond-head in Hawaii. Closing up the nearly 2 inch hole. See my other video. What did it do? It BROKE THE BIKE. Yes it did. No starting. So what did I do? Well, the air-mix screw was pegged in the wrong direction with a tiny metal cap and stopping key. So, I slowly started testing again. Each time, moving the air mix screw for more fuel (clockwise looking downward). Adding more fuel. 1/8 turn each time (or close to it). I remembered the steps. Now, as I got to almost 1/2 turn, a warm bike started. WOW! I think this is good. So, I turned it a bit more. It fired up again. And a little more, and surely enough, it fired up without the choke. And then a little more, and wow! Restored function! Now, it starts very well. And... there is no hole in the lower end of the throttle. It always stumbled a little at 1/4 throttle before this. I go for a ride and WOW! More power at the low end. Less super thrust at top speed. So... I put another disk/ring in the E-series exhaust and Woohoo! Perfect function through the heat range and from standing to full throttle at highway speeds. Good passing power. Okay... see my point? Go out there and try stuff. You don't know it is wrong until you have done the work and made it right. Do the work! Don't pay someone. Do it yourself. Just remember how to undo it. The next thing I did was shave off a little more epoxy inside the epoxy ring. I also flattened the outside edge. It now looks like a more perfect epoxy cone. I put it all together and Woohoo! Less noise and more power! A win-win for me. I also painted the end-cap black. A win-win-win. The bike now starts without choke. A win-win-win-win for me. Wow. So many wins.

    The one-U-build tail-pipe cap is totally real. It works. And lasts! I have it on my NC700X. It worked soooo well. I got my low end power back!!! woohoo!

    You can get very technical with this topic. And later on, I will NERD out on you. But for now, I am practicing making videos, entertaining you, and having fun doing it!

    Check your spark plug over all color. Know what it is. Yes, there are tricks to reading spark plugs. That is not what this video is about. It is about the basics of tuning.... such as matching your tailpipe to your intake and knowing the overall tune.

    Having three filters can give you a leg up on basic tuning. Try it. Get a variable tail pipe! Try it! Try closing up your big wide-open pipe. Try cutting the center bar out of your stock pipe. See how it has an effect on your tuning. Check your spark plug color!

    It is very important to note that the stock filter foam gasket does break down and peel off the filter when exposed to gasoline and oil. It was 50% gone when I found it. Some of it was sucked into the motor. Wow. A little shocking.

    I kinda said it a little confusing. I cut down the number of disks in my tailpipe. The fewer the disks, the more restriction. The more restriction (from fully open), the more low end power I get. So I closed up my tailpipe.

    Check out my configuration video about adding lights and other accessories. Before you add any goofy add-ons, get the bike running right and reliable for short-haul trips.... like yesterday! Only 4 hours on the bike.

    I think when I said I had 50 mpg people got kind of upset. My spark plug is gray and a little on the tan side so the color is indicating a slightly lean condition overall. When you run your bike lean, it tends to run a little hotter and you do save a lot of gas. The downside is my header bolts and nuts are very rusty and I need to replace them with something that won’t rust with the heat up. I remembered on my old super bike. I had to replace the nuts so they would not fuse with the studs in the head. It is possible to go to the hardware store and find a nut that is made of a metal that won’t turn into a blob of rust. But before I attempt to take those nuts off, I am going to soak them in penetrating oil. I’m gonna get the best tool I can find to remove rusty nuts. And I will eventually replace them. So this is how tuning, saving gas, and hot running engines cause issues. Yes my old stock header is a little discolored but otherwise it is OK.

    I finally got the carbon canister routed with the fuel line wrapped around the side of the canister. Wow, one of those storage tank hoses is not shaped right from the factory. Oh well, I am gonna ride with it the way it is!

    You can put High-Temp JB Weld in a tailpipe to close it up. Just like limiting the number of vent disks on the E-Series tail-pipe. You can make your tailpipe a variable tune-able pipe. You just need to know how. Make sure that you anchor in the epoxy properly. Do not spit out parts at other cars on the road! Thank you!

    I just added a second K&N purple gasket. The single gasket was getting squished, so I doubled it up.

    You can remove the storage tank for tuning, but please, please put it back on when you are done! I am still running slightly lean with everything installed. I have some serious punch! It is not the best for the motor to run with a grey or white spark plug. Mine is grey going on brown. So, eh... pretty good for power!

    You can high-temp JB weld epoxy in a mesh screen to cause restriction in your tailpipe. Here is how: th-cam.com/video/ScHk6yb3HNo/w-d-xo.html

    What's that rear fender from?!!

    • @RideroftheStorm
      @RideroftheStorm  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I knew someone would ask that question as the rear end on this bike is awesome. The bike had a previous owner. And I think this is an older IMS white plastic fender. IMS makes some strong universal rear fenders. This one supports the plate and LED mini signals. Also. This plate has a LED brake light strip under it. So. Yeah. Very jumpable. Very tough. I Had to mount it low and re-drill the holes. The previous owner had it too high for a Corbin seat. But it did fit his high-end custom seat for dirt track jumping. So it fits a stock seat with the dirt shield for the intake. The new seat does not have the intake dirt shield on the seat pan. So I use rubber tape underneath to cover the intake opening. This bike is a work of art with the plastics. The tuning on this bike is super spot on. I can tweak it all over the place with the filters and tailpipe.
