      i had an 81 500r i think it was a 4 speed, it had power to from a dead start in 4th to roost a trench. anyway. i got with the kick starter shaft broken off at the case. every one was trying to push start it like 2 stroke. and not starting it. when they were gone i put it in 2nd gear, pulled the comp release and started to walk with it then just barely over a walking speed, let go of comp lever and it's start right up. so easy. that bike it didn't make any difference on how high the idle was, going through a sandy dip, it'd die all the time. i'd have to push it out.

    Thank you so much! I ride the 2002 XR 250R and the compression on it is out of this world, like a tank. Every time I stall it floods. If I fall over it really floods. I sure hope this method works I got stuck on a very steep trail last week and back flipped with serious flooding 20 kicks later it finally started. I am going riding 2 days from now and will update how your instruction works. 54 Strong but really hurts my knee!

    Great video. I never really have to clear mine out. Once I installed the 68S pilot jet, it fired first Kick every time. The one difference that I notice between me and other people who struggle to start my bike is the follow through. They stop short of the Kickstarter bottoming out. I think that’s a habit developed from starting 2 strokes. Give it a swift kick and bottom that kicker out. She will lite.

    If you have factory cam and the auto decompression works as it should then there is no need to use the decompression lever except to clear it out. Letting the kickstart lever all the way to the top of it's travel engages the auto decompression. I can start mine in one or two kicks while seated. Just have to make sure you let the kick lever top out all the way up. Don't short stroke it.

    Reminds me of a brand new Yamaha TT500 I bought in the late 70's. My greatest fear was tipping it over. I would more or less do the same things he just did. Although there didn't seem to be any pattern to how many times you had to turn it over with the decompression lever in order to get it running. Sometimes you just had to get off of it and sit down for 15 minutes. I wonder how well this works on other XR650R's and just not his. That was the other thing about motorcycles when I first started out, no two of the same make and brand worked the same. My friend who I rode with had the exact same model and it worked differently than mine. As the years passed I was amazed at how much dirt bikes improved. Although I'm nearly 70 I'm still playing in the dirt and am looking forward to purchasing a new bike this summer.

      I remember motocrossing in the 80s I had a 510 husqvarna 4 stroke it would sometimes cut out mid race by the time I got it started on a hot day I couldn't see for sweat where I was going. There used to be KTM 500 four strokes leant up against trees or posts round the track when they had cut out didn't matter what you did they wouldn't start till they cooled down. I've recently sold my XR650R I hunted high and low to find a minter in dirt trim I was going to keep it as there a great investment but I knew I could never ride it like I stole it anymore, a collector bought it I do regret selling it but at least I had one . Rode it a few times still a show off wheelies everywhere wasent worth losing my licence at 65, it had an Edlbrock pumper carb finicky job starting it cold but even on the hottest day when bike was hot it would start ist kick, glad to hear yr still riding stay safe bud 🤙

      I have an SR 500 Yamaha, with a 10 to 1 piston, and its much the same.
      I always roll it over a few times for good measure with the decompresser lever pulled in to clear/prim it, then find compression and using the lever again move it just past compression, this gives you a full turn without hitting compression part way around when you kick it.

    • @TheJMRChannel
      @TheJMRChannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can get them through baja designs, you have to call for them though as I couldn't find them on their website anymore, they are called the dual squadron XL race light, they run around $900 and draw about 80 watts from the bike. I have the trial tech stator in my bike which puts a total of 200 watt output (two 100 watt outputs) there are many options for this and baja designs can tell you all of them including trail techs, call and ask for Diego and you can even mention my name and video.

    Hi man. I have a question - my XRR with stock carb CANT be started with full choke. Half choke first, second kick. Switching to full choke imidietly kills bike. When I start it on half choke I need to hold a little throttle for a several seconds or bike would stall and die. After that it runs nice. When warm it works great. Is it normal?

    • @TheJMRChannel
      @TheJMRChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would take in consideration a couple things. First is depending on how warm it is where you are at it might not need full choke, like me I live near the desert so its been hot lately so I've been firing her up most of the time first kick at half choke. During riding season though when its colder I'm doing full choke. The other thing is you might want to check your jetting, ride your bike like you normally would and then let it cool down and pull your spark plug, if the tip of the plug is chocolate brown then you are jetted perfectly. If it is looking black then you are jetted a little rich (Too much fuel not enough air) if the tip is grey or white then you are jetting too lean (too much air not enough fuel, this is really bad for the bike as it causes it to run really hot)
      Also if your bike has been sitting for awhile it might be worth just doing a quick carb clean and clean out all the jets.

      Two things: One it should have a decompression release lever, if not you should definitely get on and a cable to run the line to it, this is a major part in starting that bike, also make sure you have the XR650R and not the L model as the L model is a trail bike and completely different.
      The second thing is if your bike sat for awhile the pilot jet in your carb could be clogged which would explain it not idling, you could also try running the choke lever in a couple different positions either all the way on or even just half way on sometimes gives you more success when your bike is at a weird temperature.
