How Long Do I Have to Take a Prokinetic..?

  • Herbal prokinetics can be borderline MIRACULOUS for bloating, constipation, diarrhea, FODMAP intolerance, carbohydrate intolerance, and IBS and SIBO symptoms. In my clinical experience, 98% of people with IBS and SIBO find an herbal prokinetic that they love (yes, I track that data from my patients and students). But, once you find "the one," how long do you have to stay on it? A few months? Years? Forever??

I wish those packets you put together of the various pro kenetics would be available for us to purchase from you. I would order one in a heartbeat. Such a great idea.

Ive had low motility since I was about 10 years old and sibo symptoms started around 16… after tons of doctors who never could diagnose me, i self diagnosed myself thanks to youtube at age 39. Almost 30 years of suffering!! I have no idea what caused it :( but these videos are helping so much and I continue to try different treatments until I figure it out.

Here in UK SIBO is treated with 1 or 2 rounds of antibiotics then nothing. I've asked about taking betaine hcl for low stomach acid and neither doctor nor pharmacist knows anything about it. We may have "free" health care but it's pointless if your Dr knows nothing 😕 I've asked for prokinetics as I have zero urge for poo but I get a simple shoulder shrug. Looks like I'm stuck with SIBO for ever and a belly that looks 9 months pregnant 😭🤰

Also, my gut motility is very slow. He put me on Motergity. After, researching I’m not comfortable taking it. Watching a lot of videos on gut motility. I just don’t know what to do next.

Cycling saccharomyces boulardii has a significant prokinetic effect for me. The process of colonization (heh colon) seems to be the important part. Because it doesn't take permanent residence in the gut, I just rinse and repeat.

I've been meaning to ask this question forever -- so glad you did a video! Do the time frames stay the same even if the prokinetic contains 5HTP? (As a previous Fodmap Freedom student, SIBO MMC ended up being a huge game changer, especially after I had Salmonella!)

I appreciate the information you share! in another video I learned that the Ibs could have started from having food poisoning, which I've had more than 3xs since I was 20. Until you, I felt condemned to be without food. I'm asking questions more, now. Even went against my gp and saw an Allergenist, who suggested I try meat again. I can now eat chicken (with no garlic and onion). My next 'adventure' is to try hamburger. I can eat gf turkey, but its so gamey, its hard to get it down. So, what is a prokinetic?

I wonder if those herbal prokinetics really stimulate the MMC directly, or if they just increase bile flow, which then stimulates the MMC.
For example “Motility Activator” contains artichocke and ginger. Those herbals are often used to stimulate bile flow.

Thanks Dr D! With regards to the diarrhea predominant people, do prokinetics only help if they have slow transit time as well? i.e. if they consume corn, have multiple BMs or diarrhea daily, but the corn shows up maybe 4 days later. Do prokinetics work in this case only for the SIBO-D folks or would it also help if someone's corn transit time is 24 hours later?

Are prokinetics recommended when you have problems after removing the apendix? I had surgery decades ago, but now seem to have SIBO and especially inflammation in a certain area of the small intestine. It seems like there is a "mechanical" issue, where the passage is smaller around the inflammation. I'm afraid of using prokinetics and things like ginger since I'm afraid "things" will move too fast towards the inflammation, and then have a much bigger issue with inflammation and stuckness.

My understanding is videos are informational. If you need a response to something personal and specific, I would suggest a consultation, which is what I imagine she spends her time responding to. To say laziness feels a way to shame a person into responding, bearing in mind she spent her time for free making the video. Good luck on your health journey.
