  • We've learned all about Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution, but we can do another thing with benzene derivatives. We can do Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution. This is where benzene is attacked by a nucleophile. It sounds strange, but check it out!

    I’ve realized my professor only teaches us the reactions but does not show us the big picture, or larger concepts, as to how/why these things occur.
    Thank you for the explanation! It helps me to find Chem a little more interesting and important!

    why is there a negative charge this time? is it because Nu carries electrons with it... or does it come from the double bond that pushes onto that carbon?

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      comes from the nucleophile and then pushed through by rearrangement of pi bonds

    at 5.13 isn't there supposed to be a double bond between the Carbon and the Nitrogen on the resonance structure he drew? It seems like it's missing an electron pair?

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes that's my bad! i inserted a visual note towards the beginning of the video, hoping that would be enough to fix the error.

  • @matthewvernelen
    @matthewvernelen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    this is kind of late but did you forget the pi bond on the resonance structure at the bottom of the first page or will there be no pi bond at all between the carbon and the nitrogen? bcs I noticed that you did actually put a positive charge on the nitrogen

    • @ProfessorDaveExplains
      @ProfessorDaveExplains  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1
