I love the style of the tutorial, but there are a few missed (and pretty important) commands/keystrokes in the narration that can lead to massive frustration. for instance: creating the bevel in the top requires a modifier key (alt I think) in addition to just dragging; adding the mortise requires "opening" the component for editing by double-clicking it; something that isn't mentioned at all so that when people try to push the rectangle they drew into the component, it won't work. There are a few more but these were the two that really threw me. That said, I learned a lot. Thank you for the tutorial.
the modifier key for the bevel is the UP key... seems like I tried forever to figure it out, then saw it on the instructor for modifier keys. Click the line with your move tool, then press the up key.
Of all the Sketchup tutorials I have seen, most of them recommend installing the older version. I have never found how to do this. Yours is the first to show how to get that older version. Thank you and please have Sai keep working on these tutorials.
Several people have commented on having trouble with the bevel on the underside of the table, and was having the same issue. After lots of trial and error and a clue from @matt welch, this is what finally worked for me. 1. Deselect everything. 2. Select the four bottom outside borders of the tabletop. 3. Select the move tool (or press "M"). 4. While holding the alt key, drag one of the corners up and release the mouse. I found that with how thin the tabletop was, I either had to be zoomed in really far or else just drag all the way up to the corner (making the bevel go all the way to the top). Release the mouse button, then type in ".5" and hit enter. If someone can enlighted us on how to do this without having to select all four borders individually (or, conversely, how to to it without having to manually deselect the four borders of the offset rectangle), that would be great. Aside from this one kind of huge issue, this is a great video. Thank you!
Thanks for adding this update. What type of keyboard are you using? Following these steps exactly I don't get the same result. I'm using the wireless apple keyboard and a logitech MX Master 3 mouse. I was able to create the bevels on the table using the tape measure in a similar fashion as tapering the legs with the exception of moving each bottom edge one at a time with the "scale" tool.
Update - I deleted everything, rebuilt the table from the beginning to the point of adding the top bevel, Followed the Vince Earl steps exactly EXCEPT on my Apple Keyboard I held the "Command" (⌘) instead of the "alt" and this worked. FWIW, I tried this once before but I must have had something else selected or goofed up. Thanks again Vince Earl, James and Sai for this.

Absolutely a great video. I've been using SketchUp for years and you taught me at least 3 new things. One thing viewers might have problem with is entering "10,20" for a rectangle - this might not work if you haven't set your system up to use US style measurements, units and currency. Instead, this might work: "10;20" - this will especially be relevant to european Mac users. Other tips: Circles do not accept radii below 0.5mm - to get around this, draw a circle with the radius 100 times larger (eg. 30), then use push/pull as needed and group it as an object. Now use the Scale tool to scale it, enter "0.1", press return. Scale it again, enter "0.1" and press return. You now have a cylinder with radius 0.3mm. Also "intersect with selection" has a lot of problems with small radii. Again, draw 100 times larger, then scale down. (This especially solves problems when you have two 3mm diameter cylinders / rods that you want to intersect - sometimes you might need to make them 1000 times larger and scale down by 0.1 three times). "Intersect with selection" allows you to "drill" a round hole in a round cylinder. You can do this by moving one cylinder into the other cylinder, then click the round face of one cylinder, shift-click the round face of the other cylinder, right-click and choose "intersect -> with selection". Remove the unwanted faces of the "drill cylinder" and you're left with a round hole through or halfway through the cylinder. You still need to make sure your cylinders are large (preferrably larger than 100mm radius). There are TH-cam videos about this, but they do not mention the radius problem. "Follow Me" also have problems; especially with making circles into spheres. I haven't found a complete solution; it seems there are always holes in two "ends" of the sphere. Note: I'm using SketchUp 7 and SketchUp 8, so you can make all my tips work with even older versions.
I struggled to push the mortis rectangle into the leg. It would only pull. After some searching around, I discovered the following: The leg is a component (remember making it a component after creating it?). You need to "edit" the component. What this means is that there are black lines forming a sort of frame around the piece. If you double click it, this frame will appear. Then, create your rectangle using the guidelines, shift it into place and you should be able to push it into the solid leg. I won't even go into the struggles I had with the tabletop bevel. No explanation about _how_ to deselect everything but the four lines around the object. I tried shift, ctrl, ctrl + shift... and ended up starting with nothing selected, holding shift and going around to click each of the perimeter lines. It still took a long time to work out how to make the bevel work equally around the whole tabletop. -.- Aside from these snags, it's a comprehensive tutorial and teaches some valuable shortcuts. Converting inches to usable measurements (mm) was a task in itself. :) I also figured out that O is the orbit tool, as my middle mouse button was not doing anything.
I had the same problem. He really needs to explain single/double/tripple click every... single... time. lol. Not his fault entirely, but I missed the edit box, indicating a double click as well.
What I did was to select them manually but I hope there's a faster way to select all edges. Then I struggled with pulling the edges straight up and not to the side. Turns out that by holding the arrow key up you can drag along the vertical axis
@@RadoHudran I agree that this is not very well described in the video. It took me about an hour to figure out this vague subtlety with the program. The key lies with how the faces and edges are selected and then deselected to end up with only all of the edges going around the beveled top. Here's what I did, I made sure I was using the select tool and that the point of the tool was in the middle of one of the faces contained within the bevel and then double clicked. This then highlighted all the faces and edges within the bevel. Now, hold down the shift key and the pointer tool should now be displaying a minus sign next to the tip of the cursor. Now click once inside of the same highlighted area of the face (be careful not to click on the edge or it won't work). Then, what you end up with is just the highlighted edges going around the bevel. The narration of the video didn't mention anything about this and assumed the user would just, "figure it out." in actuality, what was supposed to be a "learn Sketchup in 20 minutes", is very misleading when you don't know all the subtleties of how to operate the program. Another thing is the orbiting to get better angels and views, this is very important and nothing is really said on this, it's just assumed the user will know. My opinion, this is a better tutorial to follow if you already know a thing or two about SketchUp. It's not a great video for somebody who is totally new to the program. In that case, it won't "teach" you how to use the program in 20 minutes.

Have seen many ‘how to’ Sketch Up Videos but yours is the one that works for me, I don’t need to know how to strip down the individual parts of an engine to drive a car, just show how to do what I need to do. I can’t wait to get home and try this out and watch some more episodes. THANKYOU!!
I purchased Sketchup Pro 2017 perpetual version when it was released as I wanted to make plans for fitted furniture around the house, haven't gotten around to using it as it seemed to complicated, I have tried to follow along with other videos, it was just to complicated and I wasn't getting the same results even though I was following along. I love your way of teaching, getting right into it straight away and learning by doing. I suffered a stroke some years ago, and my short term memory is terrible. A big thankyou to yourself and of course your daughter for these great tutorials. I would like more like this exploring other types of joints, pocket hole, dovetail, box, dowel etc. I personally struggle with how to use the protractor tool.
Any possibility of making a video of how you go from sketch up to final product? My question is how do you get all the dimensions, your cut list, and all of the angles you need to cut for the tapered top and legs?

I just spent about 2 hours trying to create the bevel under the edge of the table top! Out of total frustration I read the reviews and note the first one mentions the lack of alt command! I just tried it and it worked first time!! :)
Awesome tutorial on sketch up. I have been wanting to use sketch up, and haven't found a video that explains it as you do. However, I did have one issue I was unable to get past. Around the 18:02 minute mark where you do the underside of the table top, I could not get past that part. I was having issues with selecting the whole underside to make the adjustments. I would appreciate any help with this. Once again good job to you and Sai. Looking forward to future videos.
I've been trying to learn how to use Sketch Up for quite a while now, and this was really helpful for learning how to understand the use and manipulation of the various tools, etc. My computer's operating system is not new enough to run this 2017 version of Sketch Up, so I've been using the even older version Sketch Up 8. It's plenty powerful (for me) and meets all my needs (if I could just learn how to use it!)...so was wondering if these same basic instructions might also apply to Sketch Up 8? Everyone claims it's 'easy' but I've become somewhat frustrated with the learning curve on my own, and by watching other people's videos. Explaining the 'how to use' and the 'manipulation' of the various tools really helps a lot, and most people don't do that in enough detail, or they go way too fast. Thank you for this video, and I hope to see more from you about learning Sketch Up!
I have to commend you on being such a good father. not only are you a very skilled woodworker but such a great father in having your kids work with you and now really coming into their own as very helpful additions to your work. I know what it is to serve an apprenticeship and after all the learning time there comes a time when you really feel useful and productive in your work in becoming apart of the workforce or company. BRAVO TO YOUR KIDS and to You Too.
How to do the bevel feature at 18:00 in the video. This is glossed over, but I figured out precisely how it is being done. #1 press "space bar" to enter the select mode, then double-click into the space at the bottom of the table between the outer edge and the newly-created offset edge (the inner edge). This will select (and highlight) the outer edge, the inner edge, and the flat area between. Our goal is to have only the outer edge selected. #2 While holding "shift" button, double-click on the bottom of the table inside of the highlighted region already selected. Now you'll have all the bottom surface selected: the outer edge, the inner edge, and all of the bottom surface. While you're holding "shift" the mouse cursor will have a +- beside it. This is key because you are adding and subtracting from your selection. #3 While still holding "shift" button, double-click on the bottom of the table at the same place you double-clicked in #2. Because this was already selected, this de-selects both the inner area and the inner loop. When you're done this you will have selected only the outer edge and that outer area. #4 While still holding "shift" button, single-click on that outer area of the bottom surface. This de-selects that area. At the end of this you will have strictly the outer edge of the bottom of the table selected (and highlighted). If you make any mistake, let go of "shift" and click somewhere off the table to reset the selection group to nothing, and start over at #1 again. #5 With strictly that bottom edge selected, press "m" for move. Now click whichever corner of the bottom of the table is handy. Now you have to press "cursor up". This locks the movement direction to strictly up & down (along the blue axis). Incidentally the other options are "cursor left" (locks movement along the green axis) or "cursor right" (locks movement along the red axis). As you move the mouse up & down it will say "On Blue Axis" to show you that the movement is locked to the vertical direction. Now type in 0.5 and press "enter" to cause the bevel to be 1/2" upwards. And that's it!

I think what he really meant by "Deselect everything" was to just deselect the offset line. He clearly still has the line around the bottom edge of the table selected. I got it to work by selecting all 4 edges, then moving the corner up.

If you get stuck on the second table on the bevel, like I did trying to move on the Blue axis, push the up arrow to lock it into vertical blue axis movement. and to "deselect" hold the shift key and click on the item. CTRL key allows you to only add an item to your selection, Shift Allows you to Add and Remove selected items. After banging my head on the desk after half a dozen attempts on the dang bevel I had to look into it more, so I thought I would sahre. This is my first day on sketchup and I am very thankful for your videos.

After the first 12.5 mins of watching this video (minus pausing and rewinding a few times), I was able to complete the first table. You are a very good teacher, I have watched lots of your videos and built a version of your extreme assembly table. I also am in the middle of making a version of your miter station. Thanks for the excellent videos that you make. For those who are searching for the program, the sketch up website no longer looks like James is illustration. You’ll have to click around in Google to find a spot where you can download older versions. I wish I could tell you exactly how but I had to run into dead ends several times. Sketch up make is there eventually.

You can do this by moving one cylinder into the other cylinder, then click the round face of one cylinder, shift-click the round face of the other cylinder, right-click and choose "intersect -> with selection". Remove the unwanted faces of the "drill cylinder" and you're left with a round hole through or halfway through the cylinder. You still need to make sure your cylinders are large (preferrably larger than 100mm radius). There are TH-cam videos about this, but they do not mention the radius problem.
"Follow Me" also have problems; especially with making circles into spheres. I haven't found a complete solution; it seems there are always holes in two "ends" of the sphere.
Note: I'm using SketchUp 7 and SketchUp 8, so you can make all my tips work with even older versions.

I struggled to push the mortis rectangle into the leg. It would only pull. After some searching around, I discovered the following:
The leg is a component (remember making it a component after creating it?). You need to "edit" the component. What this means is that there are black lines forming a sort of frame around the piece. If you double click it, this frame will appear. Then, create your rectangle using the guidelines, shift it into place and you should be able to push it into the solid leg.
I won't even go into the struggles I had with the tabletop bevel. No explanation about _how_ to deselect everything but the four lines around the object. I tried shift, ctrl, ctrl + shift... and ended up starting with nothing selected, holding shift and going around to click each of the perimeter lines. It still took a long time to work out how to make the bevel work equally around the whole tabletop. -.-
Aside from these snags, it's a comprehensive tutorial and teaches some valuable shortcuts. Converting inches to usable measurements (mm) was a task in itself. :) I also figured out that O is the orbit tool, as my middle mouse button was not doing anything.
I had the same problem. He really needs to explain single/double/tripple click every... single... time. lol. Not his fault entirely, but I missed the edit box, indicating a double click as well.
How did you select the edge at 18:20?
What I did was to select them manually but I hope there's a faster way to select all edges.
Then I struggled with pulling the edges straight up and not to the side. Turns out that by holding the arrow key up you can drag along the vertical axis
@@RadoHudran I agree that this is not very well described in the video. It took me about an hour to figure out this vague subtlety with the program. The key lies with how the faces and edges are selected and then deselected to end up with only all of the edges going around the beveled top. Here's what I did, I made sure I was using the select tool and that the point of the tool was in the middle of one of the faces contained within the bevel and then double clicked. This then highlighted all the faces and edges within the bevel. Now, hold down the shift key and the pointer tool should now be displaying a minus sign next to the tip of the cursor. Now click once inside of the same highlighted area of the face (be careful not to click on the edge or it won't work). Then, what you end up with is just the highlighted edges going around the bevel. The narration of the video didn't mention anything about this and assumed the user would just, "figure it out." in actuality, what was supposed to be a "learn Sketchup in 20 minutes", is very misleading when you don't know all the subtleties of how to operate the program. Another thing is the orbiting to get better angels and views, this is very important and nothing is really said on this, it's just assumed the user will know. My opinion, this is a better tutorial to follow if you already know a thing or two about SketchUp. It's not a great video for somebody who is totally new to the program. In that case, it won't "teach" you how to use the program in 20 minutes.

I purchased Sketchup Pro 2017 perpetual version when it was released as I wanted to make plans for fitted furniture around the house, haven't gotten around to using it as it seemed to complicated, I have tried to follow along with other videos, it was just to complicated and I wasn't getting the same results even though I was following along.
I love your way of teaching, getting right into it straight away and learning by doing. I suffered a stroke some years ago, and my short term memory is terrible. A big thankyou to yourself and of course your daughter for these great tutorials. I would like more like this exploring other types of joints, pocket hole, dovetail, box, dowel etc. I personally struggle with how to use the protractor tool.

I just spent about 2 hours trying to create the bevel under the edge of the table top! Out of total frustration I read the reviews and note the first one mentions the lack of alt command! I just tried it and it worked first time!! :)
Awesome tutorial on sketch up. I have been wanting to use sketch up, and haven't found a video that explains it as you do. However, I did have one issue I was unable to get past. Around the 18:02 minute mark where you do the underside of the table top, I could not get past that part. I was having issues with selecting the whole underside to make the adjustments. I would appreciate any help with this. Once again good job to you and Sai. Looking forward to future videos.
I had the same issue. Just hold down the ALT key while you drag it and that will create the bevel correctly.

I've been trying to learn how to use Sketch Up for quite a while now, and this was really helpful for learning how to understand the use and manipulation of the various tools, etc. My computer's operating system is not new enough to run this 2017 version of Sketch Up, so I've been using the even older version Sketch Up 8. It's plenty powerful (for me) and meets all my needs (if I could just learn how to use it!)...so was wondering if these same basic instructions might also apply to Sketch Up 8? Everyone claims it's 'easy' but I've become somewhat frustrated with the learning curve on my own, and by watching other people's videos. Explaining the 'how to use' and the 'manipulation' of the various tools really helps a lot, and most people don't do that in enough detail, or they go way too fast. Thank you for this video, and I hope to see more from you about learning Sketch Up!

How to do the bevel feature at 18:00 in the video. This is glossed over, but I figured out precisely how it is being done.
#1 press "space bar" to enter the select mode, then double-click into the space at the bottom of the table between the outer edge and the newly-created offset edge (the inner edge). This will select (and highlight) the outer edge, the inner edge, and the flat area between. Our goal is to have only the outer edge selected.
#2 While holding "shift" button, double-click on the bottom of the table inside of the highlighted region already selected. Now you'll have all the bottom surface selected: the outer edge, the inner edge, and all of the bottom surface. While you're holding "shift" the mouse cursor will have a +- beside it. This is key because you are adding and subtracting from your selection.
#3 While still holding "shift" button, double-click on the bottom of the table at the same place you double-clicked in #2. Because this was already selected, this de-selects both the inner area and the inner loop. When you're done this you will have selected only the outer edge and that outer area.
#4 While still holding "shift" button, single-click on that outer area of the bottom surface. This de-selects that area. At the end of this you will have strictly the outer edge of the bottom of the table selected (and highlighted). If you make any mistake, let go of "shift" and click somewhere off the table to reset the selection group to nothing, and start over at #1 again.
#5 With strictly that bottom edge selected, press "m" for move. Now click whichever corner of the bottom of the table is handy. Now you have to press "cursor up". This locks the movement direction to strictly up & down (along the blue axis). Incidentally the other options are "cursor left" (locks movement along the green axis) or "cursor right" (locks movement along the red axis). As you move the mouse up & down it will say "On Blue Axis" to show you that the movement is locked to the vertical direction. Now type in 0.5 and press "enter" to cause the bevel to be 1/2" upwards.
And that's it!

When using "Move" to bevel the table top, I am not seeing a blue line to "go straight up." Is this a trick not explained here?

I think what he really meant by "Deselect everything" was to just deselect the offset line. He clearly still has the line around the bottom edge of the table selected. I got it to work by selecting all 4 edges, then moving the corner up.

If you get stuck on the second table on the bevel, like I did trying to move on the Blue axis, push the up arrow to lock it into vertical blue axis movement.
and to "deselect" hold the shift key and click on the item. CTRL key allows you to only add an item to your selection, Shift Allows you to Add and Remove selected items.
After banging my head on the desk after half a dozen attempts on the dang bevel I had to look into it more, so I thought I would sahre.

You are a very good teacher, I have watched lots of your videos and built a version of your extreme assembly table. I also am in the middle of making a version of your miter station. I think what I like the most about your style of teaching is the way you build the students confidence along the way. The hardest part is always starting and now it's not.

Thanks for the excellent videos that you make. For those who are searching for the program, the sketch up website no longer looks like James is illustration. You’ll have to click around in Google to find a spot where you can download older versions. I wish I could tell you exactly how but I had to run into dead ends several times. Sketch up make is there eventually.
