  • Marlin Firmware 2.0 - should you upgrade and why not?
In this video, I am talking about why you should upgrade your 3D printer to Marlin 2.0 and what might be arguments against upgrading from 1.1.X. Should you maybe stay with the last 1.1.9 version on your 8Bit board? Questions will be answered in the comment section.
Also read my blogpost about memory consumption on 8Bit Boards with Marlin 2.0:

I've also checked the blog post about memory usage, also very helpful.
As "thank you" I will share mi findings that #define SPEAKER costs 1676 bytes in Marlin 2.0.X according to my calculations and tests.

Flash memory seems to be the real bottleneck. I am running Skynet 2.3.2, which says it is Marlin RC8. Unsure what version number that corresponds to. With mesh + linear advance features enabled, it already breaks to bootloader, so I have to use ISP to program. You have me interested now in trying the Marlin 1.1.9.

In my opinion I have carried out tests with several versions of Marlin and even variants such as SkyNet, I honestly liked working with version 2.0 the engines move very smoothly, the noise produced by the paused printer and in printing are incredibly lower at Comparison of previous versions, I could build a mod with a 1.3 "oled screen, rotary encoder with switch, sd card adapter and buzzer, it works perfect, easy to configure, even the connection with Octoprint or Simplify3D is better, soon I will add a BLTouch sensor to my Anet A8.

You can keep 2.0.x and add bltouch if you don't mind losing some advanced menu items on your LCD (on the fly stepper motor steps is one of them). just find #define SLIM_LCD_MENUS and uncomment it. I have currently 3 different versions on my printers. My first Ender 3 has Marlin 2.0-bugfix, because 2.0 wasn't stable yet and it has an 32bit board now. My Geeetech i3 Pro W has 1.1.9, because it was the latest stable version when I updated it. And my second Ender 3 has currently 2.0.1 on the stock board. "BL Touch V3.x only compatible with Marlin 2.0" ?? Im currently using a BL Touch V3.1 with Marlin 1.9, so have they made some changes to 1.9 since this video? Also, so there is no feasible way to have both SD card support and BL Touch support in Marlin 2.0?

Hi, have you tried adding the compiler directives like described here:- thborges.github.io/blog/marlin/2019/01/07/reducing-marlin-binary-size.html.
It now looks like I can compile marlin 2 with a6 display, and capacitive touch, and keep sd support while compiling for the A8. I have not however tried uploading yet as need to grab my USB cable and possibly my usbasp. However the standard config compiles to 104356 bytes.

should note "stable" is just frozen copy's of bugfix so bugfix is always newer 2.1 is currently older then bugfix also. it should also be noted as a marlin dev my self we push people to use platformio that can save as much as 25% of resources in the compiled firmware.

Lets get this straight really fast. Marlin is something that is given to manufacturers for free, not end users. Manufacturers should be paying for this but they are not. If Marlin did not exist almost no 3d printers would be sold and only a few people would buy PARTS nobody would buy kits. Kits are sold because Marlin exists. If hobbyists had to write code there would be only a few people in the hobby. I'm so tired of people begging in videos trying to put this on consumers because I can tell you 3d Printing is not needed by most people. It is a hobby just like Raspberry pi and arduino. How many of those do you think were sold prior to the Firmware/Software being released? None to hobbyists. Manufacturers need to step up and pay the code writers. Hold CHINA accountable for stealing from the community. if they dont contribute, dont buy their kits or parts, its that easy. We have seen these companies just fold overnight who have treated their customers like crap and forced others to step up, even if it is as little as what CREALITY does. These kits are not hard to source yourself, stop buying their kits if they do not contribute in a meaningful way. most of the time you end up replacing all but the 2020 frame anyways.
