    I've had mine for about 6 months and never knew you could downshift to the lowest gear while in manual like that. Tomorrow's commute about to be lit

    • @Tabbyf
      @Tabbyf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That is the DCT will shift to the "acceptable" lowest gear based on some algo parameters without over revving the engine. It's not going to shift to 1st when your 100mph :)

    • @oni5909
      @oni5909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      by kick down button he means basically just flooring it and downshifting before hitting the rev limiter right?

    • @cj0lo
      @cj0lo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@oni5909 No, I think he means if you floor the throttle pedal, there’s kind of a extra little bit of resistance you can feel right at the floor. It feels like you’re pressing an extra button underneath the pedal. It’s really easy to feel if you press the gas pedal in while the car is off. I think he’s saying floor the car and push the throttle completely to that extra button feel while in your high gear like 6th and then hit the downshift paddle and the car will drop you to 3rd gear. (I drive an M4 with the DCT)

    Hey- thanks for this video! I've driven an '06 550i 6spd manual for 11 years, but with local stop and go traffic, I'd take my automatic pickup out on my interstate runs over the 550 just to avoid wearing out my left leg. Was down at the dealer when a 2012 e93 M3 showed up in near mint condition and I brought it home. Even had the "Individual Package," with the piano black trim and extra-fancy leather. I'd never driven a DCT before and was perplexed on my test drive leaving the crowded dealer lot when it just sat there with no creep in D. It didn't take long to figure out that this transmission wants to GO, and once you learn it's quirks, it's a LOT of fun while still saving your left leg on the bumper to bumper runs. Keep the vids coming!

      Depends on your tires, and willingness to allow salt on corrosive components of your car. If you are on summer tires, I'd say wait until it is at least above freezing. Salt is the enemy so avoiding it at all costs is best, but if you drive in salt, simply wash the car and undercarriage as best you can as soon as possible.

    It's hard to defend DCTs sometimes because 'hardcore' car people don't give it a chance. What they don't realize is that it can be just as rewarding as a manual transmission, although in a different way. Good DCTs feel like shooting a gun when shifting.

After owning an e46 m3 with the SMG, e39 M5, and now this, I can say it's truly the best of both worlds. The only thing that drives me nuts is WHY IS 7TH GEAR SO SHORT?! UGHH. LOL

    • @memememine1

      James Powell Jesus Christ the 7th gear is under used. I guess if you are on auto bhan and need to out run someone then the 7th is useful but in all other situations the car would be so much better if they geared 7th as an over drive with 6 close forward gears. there's no reason it needs to sit at around 3000 on the highway

I don't really want to get into another car that will have a fairly large depreciation in the next few years, and I've always always wanted an e9x M3. So I've been finding myself looking for an e90 DCT....
    Just not sure I want to give up the xDrive for a daily, or drive the M3 in the winter. So maybe the plan should be to get the manual e9x M3, and then wait for the DSG Golf R's to come down in price to replace the 335?

    Tedward, if you could do it all over again, would you still get the DCT? I have a manual and have always been a diehard manual fan, but this engine just seems to be built for a DCT given the power band and how much it loves to rev. I've been driving stick for 15 years, and this is the only car that I have ever questioned a manual in...

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ahhh this is such a hard question to answer. The only thing missing from the DCT experience that I truly miss, is rev matching. The S65 is soooo light and smooth to blip. But that said, I think i'd still go DCT. It's an amazing box for the price point of the car.

      @TedwardDrives  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Power sharpens the throttle response. I think the nomenclature stuck around from the E60 M5 when it actually made an extra 100hp with the power button. No such luck on the m3! EDC is the electronic damper control. Each mode will stiffen the suspension more and more. when the lights are off it is in Comfort Mode. DSC is traction and stability control. This button only allows you to turn it on or off. MDM mode must be selected through the M button.

      @TedwardDrives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not driven the IS yet, but as far as I can tell, the IS allows for "creep" and I would imagine the tune for clutch engagement is different to adjust for the differences in torque. I will get you a better answer once i've driven the IS =)

    • @nickmeier282
      @nickmeier282 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tedward thanks for the reply. The IS does creep. After watching the video I was scratching my head. I suppose the IS is tuned differently for a different buyer. The creep makes me wonder about clutch life for the IS. The shifting is much more similar to a regular auto than what's in the video. The IS has a sport mode, and the paddles, but does not have the shift intensity button. Another thing I have noticed is that when switching from R to D there is a noticeable delay as the gears change.

    My 2011 335i e93 DCT is totally different...
    Creeps... Has a Park button, that will take it out of sport when stopped. Pins the gearbox in Park, like a regular auto would...
    If in sport, hitting the kick down switch gives you the lowest possible gear anyways, without having to use the steering shifters....
    Guessing it's only the M that came with that DCT in the video?

    • @MaddmattH
      @MaddmattH 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the exact same hardware, just different software. For some reason BMW coded the DCT in the non-M cars to behave closer to an auto.
      The ''creep" is artificial, it engages the clutch as you release the break. You'll notice if you release the brake quickly, it takes a second to engage the clutch before it creeps. If you try a regular auto you'll notice the difference.
      I have a 335i DCT too, and I'm currently driving an auto 116i loan car while it's in the shop, lol.
