I'm pinning this all these months later because I still get a few comments a day asking the question: Why do all your incomes shoot up between episodes?
The answer is they don't - I just switch from daily to monthly incomes. It's an option you can access in the options menu.

Kamya was celebrating. The team always had fun when they got together, which was getting rarer. 11 years in Tomi was never on Earth, even when she was. Max was too busy and also a little cold and scary. Vinsinar and Nero were good mates though - always game and unfailing cheerful. Sahiba heaped loving toleration and made a terrific grump for their jet setting "family game nights" - a kind of running 80-days-around-the-world race to the humanity's landmarks.
They had been partying in the streets of Islamabad all night. Reunification, with Kamya as the mouthpiece. She never would have believed it a decade ago. Back then she was a TikTok star, or rather a "star" of modest following with a strong chauvinist outlook. When President Modhi renamed the national party India First, she supported the move. And found herself with a mysterious influx of followers. She started speaking out against the aliens more than she did foreigners, and found herself with still larger audiences for anything she had to say.
Eventually a man named Castillo came to India to meet with her. Sahiba had introduced them. Castillo sheepishly told her that he liked her videos. He tried hard to smile, his leather-worn face cracking with effort. Later Max would tell Kamya that he warmed up to her more than anyone, because he would never have to send Kamya to die in battle.
Eventually Sahiba suggested she go to the test matches and wear Pakistan's colors. Vinsinar, a cricket maniac who didn't need to be asked, piloted her around the Indian ocean on his jet. Then Sahiba introduced Kamya to some popular Instagram models in Pakistan. Then she suggested Kamya say that Pakistan First and India First were merging into a new world party called Humanity First.
And if you thought about it too hard (which Kamya made sure not to do) it didn't make sense. Why would a series of national populist fronts start preaching unity and toleration?
But that didn't matter, because you didn't need to think hard. You needed to look at the humans around you. It made perfect sense to them - to the cheering millions who saluted a new flag as it rose over Islamabad.
Only Sahiba was still awake, bleary-eyed and nearly inchoate from exhaustion and drink. Vinsinar and Nero were collapsed in a heap on the couch, their normally smart suits wrinkled and unbuttoned. Even Max had stopped by, though he left early to "deal with something."
With one hand Kamya raised a glass over her balcony, filming it with an iPhone in the other. "To reunification!" Her phone would buzz and glow for a week.

I think it's worth noting that fission has some excellent engines. According to a chart posted on reddit recently, one of the best spacecraft engines in the entire game, and by far the highest thrust (at least, without protium fusion) is under Advanced Fission systems, the terrifying sounding Neutron Flux Torch.

I gotta imagine there's an event if you're stupid (or desperate enough) to use that drive around Earth (or even a colony). That's the drive for the nuclear salt water reactor.
For those that don't know what the NSWR is, you know the fission pulse drives Perun researched in the demo? Someone took a look at that and said "Blowing up a nuclear bomb out back every few seconds? That's a silly way to do things. You get MUCH faster speeds just having a constant nuclear explosion fire out the back."
Be sure to not confuse this with the drives which have a normal reactor core and then eject some fissile byproducts to generate thrust. Which is still bad, just not constant nuclear explosion bad. Or the current ones he's using which just heat up some hydrogen propellant.
On a logistical note, the Neutron Flux Torch also requires fissiles as its propellant and they're sometimes a bit hard to come by.

    • @QuantumShenna
      @QuantumShenna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@AgaresOaks it may require fissiles, but at ~4500 kps exhaust velocity that doesn't worry me as much as it could. You can get 1000 kps deltaV, enough to completely run rings around the aliens, with only 20% of your ships mass as fuel.

    • @AgaresOaks
      @AgaresOaks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@QuantumShenna Note that just looking at the exhaust velocity and thrust doesn't tell the whole story. Drives in the mid and late game typically have one (or more) of the following problems. Large reactor size, rare propellant, rare reactor materials, end of a long research line, or too much waste heat. Fission is a mix of the first two. Antimatter is a bit of research and a bit of rare materials (or a LOT of rare materials if you're trying to use a Pion Drive). Fusion is mostly research and heat management (a LOT of heat management issues early on) and a little reactor size.
Also, there's some kind of hidden variable multiplier determining the combat acceleration because the listed values are definitely for the cruise acceleration if you math it out. And it's REALLY easy to cap out your combat acceleration later on. Normal NERVA has a 20x multiplier. The advanced pulsar drive has a 40x multiplier to its combat acceleration. Antimatter drives have a 60x multiplier from what I can see. Chemical rockets don't have a multiplier.

The trade off between thrust and Exhaust velocity is a thing in RL. Normally for the same amount of energy you can either throw MORE mass out the back getting greater thrust or throw less out but throw it QUICKLY making you have more Delta-V/Range. Systems like NERVA, Fusion etc side step these issues by providing... more power by using nuclear power over chemical reactions. (Atomic Rockets is a great resource if you ever want to learn about this all without browsing NASA papers)

I know it's easier to make the AI a challenge by just letting them cheat and giving them more resources than the player, but I also think that's very lazy; rather than make the AI better at the game, you give them a crutch which allows them to brute force things but which means that their actual skill is low. Looking at you Stellaris, looking at you Sword of the Stars.

That said, in terms of using the word "realistic", its not very realistic that the first alien race we encounter would be one that is so close to us in technology, and of such limited industrial output that they're even able to be countered at all.
A real encounter with a real interstellar civilization, would look more like 50 million ships descending from the Kuiper belt.
Not 1 ship deploying 1 base that constructs 4 scout transports per month.
But of course, if the game was "realistic" in the sense of incomprehensible scales of interstellar civilizations, there wouldnt be much of a game to play, because there'd be no chance to get past turn 2 and live xD
Unless they werent hostile, at which point again, there wouldnt be much game to play.
But its just an interesting thing to keep in mind during gameplay.
Basically in the ingame lore, Earth is unbelievably lucky to have met such a backwards starved alien civilization that barely has any more resources than Earth itself.

The problem with only taking the engine you want out of the current 'level' is that currently there's know good way to know what engine leads to what without researching them. I suppose eventually a good wiki will go up with fleshed out stats and connections, but I'm currently researching engines I'm not sure if I'm going to use half the time just to see if they unlock a better engine I might actually use because I'm not sure what's superior to what nor what leads to what without actually unlocking them to get my hands on their stats.

I have been experimenting with pairing ships, so any main ship has a Point defense ship that has light lasers, PD lasers and fast fragmentation missiles, all set on defense only. That gives three ranges of interception fire.
Putting out a cloud of anti-missile missiles ala Auroa 4x seems to help, before th e light lasers then the PD kick in, and ideally multiple ships can cover each other.

A gamey strat you can do to bait the aliens to fight you is to lower your fleet's kps to barely enough get back to station. Your fleet power lowers immensely, but your weapons fire all the same. You can get the aliens to fly into a 400-500 power fleet that is more than enough to fight off 2k worth of aliens. Kps impacts fleet power stats way more than it should and the aliens basically determine if their fleet should take a fight or not while at war by comparing fleet powers to one another rather than tonnage or weaponry.

You'll get stuck in a perma loop of fleet evasion if you have less than 9.5 dV yourself, so plan accordingly. After the battle it's simply a matter of spamming assault base until it succeeds or your run out of marine charges. 4 attempts is usually enough

Some of the spaceship stuff seems to be handled weirdly. Like how all ships seems to have variable thrust. Reducing thrust without reducing power gets you higher isp for better dv during transits (which is not something that happens in game), but reducing power to get lower thrusts with same isp rarely makes sense and those few scenarios in which it does, don't seem to be modeled in game. One would be to reduce acceleration to human tolerable levels for longer periods of time(which is irrelevant if your max acceleration is >1g), other would be to reduce radiation from rocket in some overcomplicated scheme to save on radiation shield mass.
Propelant seems to be volumeless, which is a massive loss of oppurtunity to balance armor mass, crosssection and isp (ex. hydrogen will give you higher isp than water but has significantly lower density, which in the end means that in some situations it might be better to to use latter).
Obvious things which are also missing are staging, different thrusters for combat/transit and variable isp thrusters which work as intended.
I could go on and on, but presumably devs and community are aware of this and it will be fixed as game gets developed.

Nice to have some stuff on the ship building.
I find it a little disconcerting you don't have any point defence in place though. A 4 missile monitor seeks a little like a glass cannon.
Or do you prefer to have point defence escort?
I've found a good bit of success with monitor with 3 missile racks and a pd laser, and then escorts with a missile and a pd, and making sure to fly the escorts ahead of the monitors to shoot down the incoming alien ordinance.
The current problems with starting ship position makes this trickery tho as battle start is a mad dash to get escorts into positions.
