Terra Invicta Guide - Alien threat level (and how to avoid total war)

  • For many players of Terra Invicta - the 2020s end in a positive fashion. You probably have a few good nations under control, you've got a space economy running, and your technological development should be proceeding well.
Then, sometime in the late '20s or '30s, the aliens start changing their behaviour, they start launching retaliation attacks, and from there many players struggle to out-build the damage.
The trick behind this, which the game explains (but not loudly or well enough) is that the aliens are willing to tolerate some actions by humanity, but more than that invites measured retaliation - and if you provoke them too heavily, they will continue to strike back in response.
In this video, I talk through the alien threat/hate mechanic and how you can manage it in order to stay (mostly) under their radar until you're prepared to challenge them openly.

The first faction I played as was the Servants, and I tell you what - It was so unbelievably EASY by comparison, to say, a Humanity First playthrough. I literally didn't have to build any space stations, bases or ships. Everything I did was on Earth. I just spent my time sabotaging all the other factions' efforts, nuking them to hell, and basically making it impossible to resist the aliens. Once the Alien Nation got going (as Russia), it was basically on an unstoppable warpath of death and destruction. Those 7.4 miltech spider mechs are freaking unstoppable.

Man, the aliens don't pull punches. Because I've been watching your playthrough I made an effort to keep my MC to an upper limit of just under 100, and it was fine for a while. Up until I had the bright idea to detain a second alien councillor only a few months after the first; the aliens then proceeded to blow up most of my LOE stations which triggered the Kessler syndrome event. The math of Perun's advice (found on wiki):
    Normal difficulty = 0.3 threat per used MC (Cinematic 0,05; Veteran 0,6 and Brutal 1). 0.3 * 90 = 27/50 threat, a little over the halfway point.
All but the two highest threat-generating actions (I won't spoil them) fit within the remaining threat. You can destroy 2 tier 3 habs or 2 facilities and still be under the 50 threat cap of retaliation.
The wiki does not mention how much threat detaining or killing an Alien councilor generates, but since they're very important assets, I'd say it's probably a lot.
Side note on threat meter: It is only updated when the aliens conduct a mission against your faction or by doing a Contact mission on an alien councilor. So the only way to check if your threat level has dropped enough to reheat the conflict is by knowing of, and contacting an alien councilor.

  • @yousaidthusly461
    @yousaidthusly461 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Two things are still unknown it seems:
    1. Are there activities that actively BLEED OFF hatred (ie attacking alien-unfriendly factions; dismantling bases; building civilian/research vs resource/warfare?)
    2. What is the AI FACTION thresholds and do they affect yours? While your own actions may provoke them, would a GENERAL PRESENCE OF ALL FACTIONS be a factor of specific threat? Or does the threat of one faction not affect others? CAN I ALLY A HOSTILE FACTION AND HAVE THE ALIEN FIGHT THEM only for me to remain UNHARMED!?
These are important questions we need to solve; perhaps one faction is considered notable, but maybe multiple factions in space SHARING RECOURSES CAN BE A STRONGER PRESENCE WITHOUT REACHING THR HOSTILITY THRESHOLD????

    • @ExceedProduction
      @ExceedProduction ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think each faction has their own threat meter. If YOU go over the cap, the aliens nuke YOU, not someone else. It makes little sense (because how would the aliens know?) but it's just something to be handwaved as game mechanics.

I'm in late 2030s and I just hit the point, not by intention, but just missmanagement, that I am basically at war. I'm so no prepared (humanity first). I already got clapped 2 times and needed to start a new campaign. This time, I'm am able to retaliate. Tho that 9k mothership fleet above earth gave me a headache.
Tips I learned for neutralising it:
    1) their arsenal is mostly missiles, so if you deplete it, the combat rating goes down to like 2-3k and they become mostly harmless - so just suicide a few ships into it and in my experience, they rather leave to refit than stay (they will deplete all of their missiles on the few ships)
    2) all of your stations by this time should have defences built up - 3 arrays are enough for most fights. But you need good lasers
    3) don't be me and leave Mercury undefended, it's gonna hurt a lot. Have a few ships to intercept raiders there. They, in my experience, send destroyers and corvettes rather than bigger ships there. So having 2 fleets of 5 suicide ships is enough to stop it for some time. Tho you need the ability to rebuild quickly

Keep it vague-ish before that, okay, but there needs to be some form of mechanic in place to clearly and precisely alert the player that if they confirm their current action, they would push their ceiling past the Retalitation threshold, thus creating a perma-aggression-situation.

especially if your stations can scare off the small raids, a pair of raiders and maybe a mothership do one pass, get damaged, destroy nothing and then beg to end combat. at that point you might as well push on them. heat you take is pressure off the other factions to grow and take heat off you in turn

Perun, there has to be something else that is keeping the floor as well, not only MC. In my playthrough I am very careful with that, I've been even running around 70 (for more monetary reason, having a bit of a problem with that), yet still I am getting the message that you mentioned. And I have two technologies researched. And I am not hitting aliens, maybe I am poking servants and prot a bit, but not that much. So there has to be something... Though aliens are not retaliating, so maybe my advisors are just stupid :p

    • @LangyMD
      @LangyMD ปีที่แล้ว +1

The threat level updates whenever you do something to generate or decrease hate, but A. it doesn't take into account the floor from used Mission Control and B. the actual hate gained varies by 20% in either direction but the threat meter does not. It is 'fixed' to the correct current value of hate when you capture an alien. This - especially the not taking into account the floor part - means it can be very, very wrong.

However the aliens do not act like it. They do go for a base maybe every 3-6 months or so but that seems just as random. Really wish that threat bar was more useful. There absolutely HAS to be something else
      70, you telling?
I had somewhat around 20-30 in the 202x and my advisors just kept telling me to stop already, though aliens did literally nothing to me until...
Until the moment I've managed to get full control on China other than EU and US and the aliens just went full nuts since then
Constant assault on the China's and US control points (37% chance when I caught them redhanded, somehow literally always pulling it down in the end)
Constant propaganda there to just make my life harder
Obliteration of every single station I have or just begin to build
They went so hard that I had Kessler's in the late 20-s with like 30 debris in the both interface orbits and like 10 stations destroyed in both, the moment I try to launch something I'm immidiately seeing the message of their fleets coming there and only a second later - more debris in the orbit
Even Mercury and Mars, both stations and mines are under constant assault, though, quite underwhelming on the mines, where I can simply rebuild all they've destroyed, unlike stations which are getting destroyed literal days after the launch
I'm not messing with them or the servants for like 5 years already
I have somewhat like 40-50 MC used (out of 120+ max) combined with the tech for 20% more cap
They've destroyed like 30-40 stations and colonies already and they simply won't stop
      Normal difficulty academy btw
I simply don't know what could I do in order for them to finally let me live
And most like obscure of it all - my advisors don't say not even a word about the aliens and the "Please, be cautious with the operations"
They're either trolling me or just straight up accepted the fate of being constantly bombarded
      tldr
      40-50 mc used 120 max +20% tech
Not messing around with ayyliens or servants for like 5 years
Somewhat around 40 of my habs obliterated since then
And they won't stop under any circumstances
Though it also might be a result of detaining like 12 of their advisors in a row and clearing the entire world from their flora before that, but like, how long they will be mad then, will they ever stop or they just felt like "I don't like those agressive guys, we should make them live in hell for the eternity AND WE TOTALLY WILL"

I was 2-3 / 5 hate level, I didn't engage any alien operative, I didn't fight any xenoflora, I didn't fight any space ships, and I gave Servants and Protectorate a break for almost 2 years, focusing my councilors on Advise and Public Opinions in my nations. Then suddenly my hate level is 5/5 and aliens sent out 15 fleets on me. 1 for each space station. They destroyed everything around earth, mars and mercury.
When hatred went up I had only 60 MC used (cap over 100 though), it was 2034, I researched both techs that allows me to have more "space presence" without triggering aliens. What I think changed is that I research "last tech" that sets my end goal. (as a resistance).
And I think aliens learned that I am in the end game now (although I barely can fight a single destroyed of theirs) because I rushed xeno research and they just want to shut me down.
If it's that, then it sucks, because game doesn't warn in any way that simply researching can be a defeat condition...
PS: oh and of course after they blew up ALL my stations and then all my habs in following months, the hate is still 5/5 and they still come and bomb anything I try to put in space.

Am I to assume the hatred from the other factions works similarly, presumably with less of a focus on MC usage and perhaps some basis on how much landmass you own on Earth?
I was okay with the Aliens destroying stuff because it was easy enough to rebuild, but the other nations continuously assassinating my heavily experienced councilors feels a bit BS to be honest - especially when I've been trying to use gifts to improve their opinion of me and my councilors have a high amount of security (One of them had like 18 and was assassinated first time. The others had a fairly low amount at about 10 but were just chilling increase public opinion in my home nation, so should have been about as safe)
I suppose what I'm asking is, what can I do to stop offensive actions? I've tried using gifts which is the only way I can guess to try and make friends with the other factions, but they seem to just hate me regardless, for example Project Exodus did some of the most offensive stuff to me, and I literally did nothing to them for years. Honestly it was so annoying I've just stopped playing the game completely until I can hear about how to stop the issue from coming up.
Edit: For the record, I know there's no way I'm getting a relationship with the servants or even the protectorate as the resistance - I'm specifically talking about the anti-alien and "neutral" factions.

How much relative power and how much bullying you do of them decides their hatred of you. Landmass, as such, isn't the factor. You could own all of Africa, and if you can't do anything with it, you're not a threat. But if you have the economic gun to destroy their faction (US, EU, Russia+something else, China, India+Japan), they're going to distrust you. If you're bullying them too, well now you're a clear and present danger.

@@shawngillogly6873 Like I said, I did nothing to Project Exodus - short of defending the opinion in my home (China) from falling to them as they were pushing hard for it.
If what you mean is "did I have a stronger economy than them" then yes I did for sure, I easily had the strongest economy and research on the planet.
So if your economic and military power has a determining factor in their treatment of you, it certainly makes sense.
But I'm not sure how to combat it, as they seem unwilling to take peace, never mind anything close to non-aggression.
I think the game could make it a bit more clear what you could do to mend your relations with people, or give more options. Why can't I give away control points I don't want anymore, for example?
And like I said it seemed no matter what I did, whether it was getting high security or keeping my people at home they would still get offed.

So, in my game, I've hit a point where all the other human factions are at war with me by default even though I don't actively mess with them. I *believe* it is a combination of factors:
      - Control Points on Earth, as you may have guessed.
      - Mission Control utilized in space, much like for the aliens.
      - Faction Projects completed, ie your faction-exclusive tech strength.
      - Recent acts of hostility, with a slow decay.
And as for the less obvious stuff:
      - MOST IMPORTANTLY the **level of difference** between themselves and you. It's not just that you're getting a lot of resources - it's fine if those resources are fairly competitive with what they have, or weaker - it's about how badly you're out-pacing them and how much they resent you for that and see your dominance as a problem.
      - Possibly their own acts against you can also increase their conflict/war status? I am least sure of this one.
      - Ideological difference. The servents natrually hate HF and Res more than most other factions and will raise to War status more quickly, and HF and Res hate the servants more too!
I have heard that an upcoming patch (it might be up on beta branch now?) is also going to change it so that factions which are more ideologically similar (like HF and Res, who share the goal of militarily stopping the invasion) don't automatically gain hate (or gain much less of it) based on growth/strength differences. So hopefully, for example, HF will stop getting mad at the Resistance just for building too much of a robust defensive fleet.

I can at least attest to this one, I gave a gift to the initiative to leave me alone - as they were doing a coup detat against a small nation I was trying to unify - which raised them from "War" to "In Conflict". Over the end turn they again did coup detat (presumably they queued it up already) and then it shifted back to "War".

How do you submit a bug/crash report I found one where if I reload after I wipe out all of one faction's councilors, say the servants for example after turning an agent I assassinate 4 councilors and make the turned one resign, while the last one still appears in their councilor list but if I click on them nothing happens but if I reload the game and click onto the councilor tab it becomes "Missing councilor name Investigator whitebox Location" and if I click on it the game immediately crashes.

How much does attacking alien Lifeforms increase Hatred? I've been sitting at the Hate Limit for a while now (with only around 50 MC) and all I've really been doing _recently_ is using armies to destroy Xenoflora. I suppose it could also be me "attacking" the servants by always making sure I have a turned councillor of theirs.

Attacking xenoflora doesn't affect it, I'm pretty sure. If you're repeatedly detaining Servants to turn them, that's probably what's doing it.

@@xeroprotagonist I'm not detaining them. my Councillor has enough persuasion to just turn them.
Maybe MC usage isn't quite like a floor and more like a constant increase, so as I'm building more stations and increasing MC Usage it keeps pushing me just over the Limit, before decaying below it again?

for me, I went from 2 level( kill 1 ship and 1 agent for the questline), to 5, when their Alien nation imploded from unrest.. and for some reason most country either went to me, or nobody.. Even though I only did just a few unrest missions.(other factions must have done way more, cause mine never passed 5.0 unrest, and only had 1 agent able to do it, while their attempts went to 7-9 often until they hit that 10).
But for some reason, now, the aliens are all out on me :/
I guess I did try to stop the servants a few times, and I've been mass exterminating fauna, but that civil war, made them all out crazy.
They didn't like when I colonized a moon of Jupiter real early, but after they blow that up they left me alone. The Academy had been pissing them off massively though, they kept sending tripods armies and attacking all their countries O_O
Oh and MC wise, nobody but the servant is above 50 in my game, and they are still pissed. I wonder if Veteran makes it much lower though.
