Life in a compound - an OPEN & HONEST review of J One Residence, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

  • One of the most frequent questions I get from prospective expats is the living situation. Where to stay, what's it like, if there is anything to watch-out for... The list goes on.
    The common concern is that there is very little information out there and you can't really find any honest reviews. People tend to arrive and commit to a compound or residence and only then find out the issues, once they've committed to a year's contract... Awks.
    After spending two years in J One, we wanted to change that and share our experiences - the good, the bad and the ugly. Please appreciate this is an experience-lead review from our time here. Other people may have better experiences or worse ones... We want to shine a light on our experience.
    We feel it's important for the living standards to improve and we are confident they will as demand increases as well as competition. Videos like this will showcase the realities of living in such places and hold establishments accountable in an effort for them to raise standards themselves.
    We hope this helps and gives you an insight into some of the things you should watch out for. Good luck and you can always reach out to either one of us if you have any questions.

    Hi guys, great video, really useful right now for us as my wife and I (no kids) are moving to Jeddah in a couple of months from Abu Dhabi. Moved to UAE from Scotland nearly 2 years ago and now heading to Saudi 😊 we aren’t looking for compound life, and wondered if you have some apartments or areas you would recommend for us to check out as newbies. Any other advice would be appreciated! Thanks

      Just seen you on IG, we can chat there 🙏🏼
      I would say it all depends on where work is for you - ideally somewhere I relative close proximity to there. That’ll make life that much easier rather than picking location first.

    Hi guys, can you recommend something good near Jeddah Prep School or British School Jeddah with a price range between 60-80k for 3-bed accommodation. Real estate rental is much more expensive than Bahrain over here and Ive been struggling to find a place.

    Hi guys! I am planning to move to Jeddah in the following weeks. How did you adjust to the costumes in the country? Specially Thea, because I am planning to move with my wife. Thanks for sharing. Just FYI, I have been living in Qatar for 3 years now.

      Hey Francisco, hope you’re well? Thanks for the message! We actually did a video not too long ago about the abaya and Thea gives all the info about how it is for women. But honestly, nowadays it’s not a problem at all, just dress respectfully (I.e. avoid tank tops and hot pants) and you’re good 👍🏼

      @@petedoessaudi Thank you guys! I will follow you and check the other videos. Do you recommend any place to live there? I mean, if you are comming to Qatar I will surely advise to stay in The Pearl. I do not know if there is a place like it. I have seen the Jeddah Gate area and it looks OK to me!

    • @petedoessaudi
      @petedoessaudi  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@franciscofernandez7753 I would say it really would depend on where your work is located. That’ll come first for convenience. Do you know where you’ll be working from? But to be honest, Jeddah isn’t huge so you can get everywhere pretty easily, but rush hour can prove frustrating! Thanks for the recommendation.

    Hi guys, can men wear normal T shirts and can they wear shorts? So much conflicting information online. Also, how tight is tight for jeans and chinos? Thanks.

    • @petedoessaudi
      @petedoessaudi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, none of that is a problem. As a guy you don’t really have to worry about too much. Recently it was announced that men can wear shorts and be allowed access to malls and shops. The only time you need to wear trousers is when you go into a governmental building, or likely a posh restaurant!
      Tight jeans / chunks are fine too, just may be debatable from a fashion point of view 😉
      Hope that helps!

      Do men have to wear shorts to cover the knee or any length? Thanks.

    • @petedoessaudi
      @petedoessaudi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@r1chmahogany287 No problem at all - any length of shorts are fine, assuming they’re not the hot pant variety! The covering the knees comes from what men have to wear when they pray if I’m not mistaken - they need to cover from their bellybutton to their knees, so as you could imagine in years gone by short shorts weren’t really a thing.
