Did Daemon Just Drink Weirwood Paste at Harrenhal?

  • It looks like daemon might have just drank weirwood paste in house of the dragon season 2 episode 4. The weirwood magic on display at Harrenhal has been one of the best parts of the season for me and bumps up against a lot of the cool things we have talked about in the past.
    I needed to get out my initial reaction to the weirwood potion that Daemon seems to have just drank and what it could mean. I really look forward to your reactions to this one and to seeing what effects this has on Daemon in the future.
    Is this paste similar to the paste bran drank with the 3 eyed raven/crow and the children of the forest? I think the evidence says they are similar, but how much so remains up in the air.

    I think one of the most interesting things about what happens is how we see, from Daemon's perspective, how he appears to "lose time"... he goes from taking a swig of the potion to immediately coming to his senses... some time the next day in the middle of an ongoing meeting? He doesn't just get sleepy, then stumble back to his room, and then have a groggy morning... he INSTANTLY loses a whole segment of several hours of his awareness... and this is VERY similar to the experience we have described in some situations in the main story, like with Cat sitting at her father's deathbed and losing a day, or even Doran Martell saying he needed to keep his mind clear for an important meeting only to then go fall asleep in the Water Gardens...
    It seems like, perhaps this potion is something that preps a person's mind to BE "warged" rather than to BECOME a green seer per se... someone may be trying to prepare Daemon's mind to implant the seeds of something in him that they can use to control his behavior... it would certainly be an interesting twist on the Battle Above the God's Eye if Daemon was actually being mind-controlled by a third party to ensure an outcome that resulted in no Targaryen winning, directly over the Isle of Faces...

      My interpretation of the scene is that Daemon was hallucinating the entire time he was in the middle of meeting with Lords Strong and Blackwood (or Bracken, whichever) and came back to awareness in the middle of the meeting to realize the whole incident with Alys Rivers was just a hallucination.

    • @JimRFF
      @JimRFF 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@extraplain2412 I do agree with that in general, I think the literary point of Daemon vs Aemond is how fundamentally similar the characters are, and it makes a neat externalized version of the characters' self-loathing aspects, which is completely undercut by the elimination of motive will from the character if they're mind controlled... but I can't think of another reason why the show would have added this detail in otherwise xD

    • @simonholmes841
      @simonholmes841 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I think both decisions are to preserve his ego. Eating the dinner would have meant accepting guest right and, more importantly for Daemon, accepting that his coup of Harrenhal wasn't a difficult or dangerous feat. I suspect he thinks he's risking his life for his lady wife and the honor of his dead brother, by single-handedly taking the battle to the enemy and infiltrating the greatest stronghold in the realm . . . when really he's left them vulnerable while he plays war hero because he's frustrated having to listen to his wife. He wasn't ready to admit his life wasn't at stake.
      He's not afraid of being killed, he's afraid that his contribution to the war will be sharing mediocre meals with gormless men in a leaky castle. But also, he saw Alys lick her fingers. He probably thought the dodgy draught was either delicious, spooky but harmless, kinky flirting, or straight up blood magic . . . none of which are downsides in Daemon's book.

    Since Alys says in the previous episode to Daemon that he will die at Harenhall, could he die as the green seer for the trees at Harenhall? His body is never found according to fire and blood, so it could have been grabbed by the children of the forest. It would be a pretty depressing end if we see him being forced into a postion of power he never wanted after he did the same to Rheynera based on the visions.

    Weirwood magic makes a lot more sense when you see the Oden imagery from Norse mythology that George is using. David Lightbringer actually has some good videos on the topic.

    I think this is setting up Daemon surviving the Gods Eye battle. His body was never found, a detail Martin specifically added. Many people claim Daemon couldn't have survived the fall, but Caraxes did. The dragons could have been flapping and flailing enough to slow the fall for everyone, reducing velocity. Daemon could've washed up on the Isle of Faces and patched up by the Green Men or hooked up to the weirwood network, making him a predecessor (and potentially even mentor) of Bloodraven. He could still be there now. Watching. Waiting. But for what?

  • @MrHws5mp

    Of course, it's not a choice between Weirwood Paste and porridge: there's no reason why Alys' concoction couldn't be some other kind of magic potion. Indeed weirwood Paste might have regional variations just as cooking does. Maybe the COTF of the Riverlands mixed it with some local berry not available north of The Wall to make it taste better, or to give it some other characteristic.

    I think it's possible that the paste has a weirwood component in it. The question is why? What intention does Alys Rivers have in giving it to Daemon? Knowing what apparently happens between Aemond and Alys at a later date, I can't help but wonder why we are seeing these interactions between Daemon and Alys now. Is she trying to help, hinder, or harness the Targaryens? It definitely seems that she wants to manipulate in some shape or form - and, at a guess, it's to serve her own purpose. Note how we see Daemon running repairs on Harrenhal in the trailer to episode 5. Perhaps she just needs the assistance of 'a' Targaryen, and it doesn't really matter if it's Daemon or Aemond.

      A bit reminiscent of the House of the Undying, with the spooky potion tripping and the ambiguous motives. I'm sure Daemon and Aemond are interchangeable for her purposes, whatever they are. No idea if it's their status as princes, as dragonriders, as horny bad boys, or what.
      I would love to see her do the EXACT same routine, beat for beat, with Aemond. He'd have different visions, but then she'd throw the same line at him and we start to wonder how many times she practiced this.

    Alys is the the resident witch of the haunted castle. There’s no way she is here to help Daemon. She, like witches of myth, is fattening Daemon up spiritually before she feeds him to the castle. “You will die in this place”. His juiced up blood of the dragon will be an excellent sacrifice to the weirwood. People have a blind spot for the green magical faction (CotF, Green Men, Old Gods, Weirwoods, Wargs, Bloodraven, The Others, etc) believing them to be more benevolent than they are. They are fueled by human sacrifice and blood, every major holy event for them was a mass slaughter or orgy or both. Alys is of this faction and will want to absorb and consume Daemon.
    Another super sus part about greenmen is their bringing down meteors (eldritch old gods like R’hllor the red comet, the Drowned God & the shadow by Stygai) in myths like the Hammer of the Waters, and the Grey King (a green man) worshipping the cult of the Drowned God.

    I wonder if what happens to Daemon after drinking from that cup is the same thing that happened to Ned at the Tower of Joy? The way Daemon’s POV shows that he doesn’t even remember choosing to drink it, and his memory being wiped makes it feel like he just time jumps, reminds me of how Eddard recalls the events at the TOJ. Along w the his potential symbolic hallucinations and memories that don’t make sense (ie, tearing down the tower) and his unreliable narrator POV.
    Tinfoil: Maybe the events that Eddard believes took place at the TOJ, actually took place at Harrenhal, and he’s just confused bc he was drugged w the same kind of stuff as Daemon, or bc he was experiencing weirwood induced visions/dreams.

It would go a ways to explain why he doesn't suspect her of drugging him (with more than he bargained for) and trusts her tonic immediately. A little bit of editing show don't tell goes a long way to sell the audience on the circumstances.

Like, Rhaegar abducted Lyanna around Harrenhal and presumably seduced her into having his baby to fulfill the prophecy, but in the Dance, Alys, this supposedly dangerous witch, lets herself gets pregnant by Aemond. I don't remember if there is any evidence that the same could have happened when Daemon held Harrenhal, but the show seem to be implying that she wants something from him, yes, could that something be the same that Rhaegar wanted from Lyanna?

    I think the paste gives the consciousness of the old gods strapped in the trees and in the wall access to the body of the one eating it, however the one eating it must have a certain blood line. This is how the old gods are immortal.
    Like...
    Blood raven isn't actually the original blood raven , he's the access point between the old gods and bran and the old gods are done with blood raven cause his body is useless so now they will need bran's body to function within the world. Same goes for any other chosen ones that drink the paste ... Drinking it is a sacrifice in itself to the old gods . Bran sacrifices his body to the old gods just like blood raven probably did before him . This is what gives them immortality within the humane life & world. ... 🤔🤷

    I was wondering the exact same thing except we are shown that it was just a dream (or a hallucination) and he's really in the middle of a conversation with Lord Strong and Lord Blackwood. Or Bracken. Whichever it was. My interpretation of the scene is that Daemon was hallucinating the entire time and the whole incident with Alys Rivers was just a hallucination. I also think Larys Strong is orchestrating the entire thing through his greenseer abilities and connection to weirwood magic (see Joe Magician's channel for this theory).

    Look, I don't know what the stuff was. I just hope that before this show winds up we get to see Aemond or Daemon have a vision of the Tree of Kings like in The Northman. I don't even care if they steal it shot for shot. I just want to see everybody from Aenar and Aegon the Conqueror and Meager all the way up to Aegon V and maybe even an Emilia and Kit cameo at the very top, all hanging from the tree in full plate with the various princes and princesses and assorted Dragonseeds on its gnarly branches.
    If they do that, I'll forgive that dumb thing from S2E3 where Rhaenyra and Alicent have the exact same dream that Rhaenyra snuck into King's Landing. And yes, I'm considering that some kind of wacky Weirwood dream. I cannot stand the thought that the writers would actually have put that awful scene in the show otherwise.

    You can't "make someone a greenseer", but I think the drink could help make Daemon more attuned to the language of the Old Gods. They often speak in visions and riddles so much so that even those with the gifts can barely (if at all) understand them. And to take someone like Daemon who doesn't believe in this gobbledeegook at all, it might help make him believe.

    I think Brans drink is different since he's meant to be the 3 eyes raven, and what Daemon is given is just meant to let him see more. They did kill ("") a green seer for Brans smoothie, and it doesn't seem like Daemon got the same unless Alys did it without us knowing.
