Doing 5k’s won’t hurt but for footy you want to be doing HIT workouts get that heart racing and replicate more what it will be like in a game, shuttle runs etc, lots of change of direction work, sprint work, being active though is never a bad thing.
Mile runs and 5K are always great but you need more than that to become great. The best would be partners drills since it is more game relavant and accurate. Soccer is a game where you have to do short sprints and short cuts many times, so mile runs and 5k are not the best for that.

Hey CN 10... I'm certainly not a pro (that bus passed LONG ago) , but, from playing LWB/RWB, here are a couple of things you can work on to make it tougher for ANY defender, especially from the wing..... #1 Get comfortable, get GREAT at BOTH FEET. In defending, it is our preference to "45°" you to your weaker foot... meaning when your advancing, we almost want to shield you onto your weaker foot... however, if youre like me, and can strike/pass/ volley well with both feet , it makes it DIFFICULT to predict your acceleration, preference, and you become UNPREDICTABLE. #2 When making your runs off the ball, weave back and forth... if it's possible, not running in a straight line makes it more difficult to mark you tightly. #3 Train your fast-twitch muscles ... become SUPER quick with the ball, emphasizing short, controlled, "chops" with the ball. Obviously, going back to #1, if youre able to be a quick handler, quick dribbler with BOTH feet, it will have your defender guessing most of the time... it makes you UNPREDICTABLE. The moment you sense hesitation in your opp FB , THAT'S when you make your acceleration. #4 Use your physical advantages... if youre tall with long strides , i.e. L. SANE, then your runs are dangerous.... if youre SHORTER, a more stout player, your center of gravity is great at shielding, and "bumping" defenders off you when dribbling. Trust me ..Im 6'2" 198 , and when shorter players would use their low center of gravity, and put their shoulder in my ribs, it could knock me off balance, which is an opportunity created for that "hesitation" ... then BOOM... you gone!!!! All in all... become UNPREDICTABLE... anytime you have your defender guessing , that is a moment for you to exploit with acceleration, pace, and or power. Hope this helps.
