Kate, nearly fifty years ago when I was an Ag student I got a job with a cropping farmer who would be of the same era as your grandpa (this was NSW, Australia). At the time we thought so much had improved since the horse era. Did not use herbicides, fertilizer and seed was carried on your back to the machine(drill, then known as a combine) for loading. No fat farmers then. Cabs if on tractors were pretty rough and noisey and at times extremely dusty. Could be cold at night with lighting only for a few yards. Still, we got the job done, just not as big an areas as today. I still think the underlying problems have not changed; the weather , the markets and the costs.I wonder what you will be able to relate to a younger generation when you achieve your grandfather's age.

We’d like to hear about your farm economics; cost for operations, seedling, fertilizer, and your percentage of profit margins for the various crops. Also, how do you decide what crops to plant in the spring?
@Fred Thank you for your suggestion and question. Our costs and profit or loss margins are private and my father will not disclose them. We rotate crops and look at the predicted weather patterns to determine what we plant.
The old generation are a blessing and they are the ones that paved the way to today's improvement in farming. Family farming has been the backbone of food production in North America. Family farming is facing a big danger which is the big corporations. It is dangerous when you see companies owned by Bill Gates and people like him own the biggest portion of farm land in the USA...and they continue to take on big family farms and turning them into their own style of farms or simply turn it into farm land "on hold". Losing control of farm land security is a big issue, and is an issue that nobody is protecting. Politicians seem to please lobbuests and there are so many of them in the farming industry. Protect your family farms and keep your food secure....do not fall for the high price they offer for the precious land that fed everyone for generations.
I shouldn't laugh, but sometimes when you ask questions for our benefit, your dad and grandad have a tone like, "Kate, are you okay? Your mama didn't drop you on your head, did you?" because you yourself obviously already know the answer and are doing reporter-style questions. 😆 Well, our mamas maybe dropped us on our heads, because we didn't know most of it!
I love you guys and sorry you got snow now but I remember when I was a kid we got a blizzard on memorial day with 3ft of snow God bless you and your family stay safe ❤

80 years of farming is sooo impressive. Farming is the most important job there is. Without farmers we are without food. And that snow is crazy. Here we were complaining we couldn't turn out the cows till today. Your people are a tough people to survive out there. Stay warm Kate.

Farming is NOT for the faint hearted. Weather can make or break a farmer. We live in Calgary but I grew up in Saskatchewan. The cold sure makes a difference being it is already the end of May 2022. I understand that we were expecting a warmer and drier year. That was the long range forecast. I heard nothing about an colder drier year. Maybe I have selective hearing. Thanks for the video. It got so cold with the 3” or so of wet snow that we’ve lost the heads off the hay. Everything else looks good. It looks like it will recover fine, but definitely stunted a bit. We’re just thankful for the moisture.

Farming is NOT for the faint hearted. Weather can make or break a farmer. We live in Calgary but I grew up in Saskatchewan. The cold sure makes a difference being it is already the end of May 2022. I understand that we were expecting a warmer and drier year. That was the long range forecast. I heard nothing about an colder drier year. Maybe I have selective hearing. Thank you for making your video(s). Hang in there. 😊

Thanks for the video. It got so cold with the 3” or so of wet snow that we’ve lost the heads off the hay. Everything else looks good. It looks like it will recover fine, but definitely stunted a bit. We’re just thankful for the moisture.
