In today's video, I am very excited to be able to see the Jewel Strawberry developed at Cornell University in person at Barrie Hill Farms in Springwater, Ontario, Canada. I learn how to grow strawberries and the process of harvesting these delicious and beautiful berries! The Gervais Family has been growing strawberries since 1977. Morris Gervais, 2nd generation farmer is giving me a special tour of his strawberry fields. I learn the secret to irrigating them too. This is a fantastic family farm and a terrific opportunity to buy local and you can even pick your own! I can't believe how delicious and juicy these strawberries are! I don't think I have ever had a fresher strawberry ever!!!!! A big thank you to the Gervais Family and remember to buy local fruits and veggies wherever you are!!! My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.
A lot of “professional” interviewers and TV and radio talk show hosts could learn a lot from Kate. Always excellent questions and never interrupts the answers and is always enthusiastic. Kate could ask questions about paint drying and make it interesting. Such a great natural gift of communication at such a young age!

After acquiring new skills, Kate wearing a white lab coat, creates a top secret new strawberry plant breeding program to develop a superior variety strawberry. Those strawberries are some juicy sweet rubies but you Kate, you're a gem in agriculture.

Years back (1996) I bought a California Ag database of potential customers for my soil amendments and fertilizer business. In looking at who had what acreage and who had what kind of revenues I was puzzled about these 200-500 acre farms that were in the top ten on the California farm income list. Now mind you this is out of thousands of farms and the other 6 in that top ten each had 20,000 acres plus. It turned out that they were coastal strawberry growers. You can do really well here on a 40-acre block of strawberries. There are many small-growers here who started out with an acre and over 20 years survived, thrived, bought additional acres, and expanded their road-side fruit-stand business. Yum! This video brings back memories of working on a diary farm in CT. Dad grew rhubarb and strawberries for mom's incredible rhubarb strawberry pies. With fresh whipped cream directly from cow, to whipping bowl, to pie. A GREAT late night snack without a plate at times! :)

Hello Kate, one of the best summer products to buy, awesome taste and very healthy, just like strawberry jam, jelly or compote.
Prices have doubled last two years in Europe, a pound of strawberries ( 0.45 kg/450 gram ) is an easy US$2.50 to US$4.50 😥
I don't know what prices do in the USA or Canada but here it is crazy, but no worries, ..... I eat them all summer. 🍓🍓🍓🍓

Barrie Hill Farm is kinda like having a garden where all you need to do is harvest the food! However they do need to be aware that a robot IS here that is taking over the picking and packaging of Strawberries. That will put their more commercial strawberries at a disadvantage if they continue the hand picking. So in my opinion the people that come out to pick the crops for their own table become even more important to this farm.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada and I've neen getting local strawberries for $2.49 C ($1.93US) for 1 imperial quart (1.13 liters). They are fabulous and the weather has been perfect for them. Lots of rain, not too hot and everything is green and lush.

Great to watch Kate! It reminds me a bit of my vacation in the 80s. Then I started picking strawberries in England as a little boy. I remember it very well. It certainly made a big impression, I think I was twelve years old then. Strawberries are delicious, I sometimes put them on bread with a little bit of sugar. The juice running down as you sampled a strawberry reminded me of our daughter when she was about 5 or 6 years old. We were picking in Creston, BC. There was a sign that read "No sampling as you pick." Our daughter could not resist. She sampled a few. The juice had run down her top and when we went to the area where the scales were, the owner asked, " . . . and did you sample any fruit?" Our daughter turned red and we had a bit of a laugh. . . . of course we did not want to make her feel bad. 😊 . . . and yes, she still loves strawberries.

Kate great to see in Ontario Canada. You are near were my family farms. I live start south of Barrie. I am in the GTA area. My family has farmed here for around ninety years. I have learned a lot from my Grandfather and father. I see you have the same gift. I love to see how much your family works together to farm. Please keep farming. A farm story to share that involved my mother growing up on a Saskatchewan farm. When grandpa & grandma headed to town for groceries, it was about 10 miles to town. Back in those days, horses were not fast and even cars were an afternoon trip to town. When the vehicle hit the mile intersection, the kids went into action. The cow was milked and the cream separator went into action. It was time for homemade ice cream. The kids across the road were invited and they picked strawberries from their garden. Imagine fresh strawberries with homemade ice cream made with real cream. Everything was washed up and put away by by the time their parents arrived back home. At supper time the kids were not eating much. My Grandpa would come in after milking the cow saying, "Bessie didn't have as much milk this evening, . . . maybe she's drying up." The kids did not dare look at each other because they might start laughing. . . . those were the days alright. Just to show that time is quickly passing, there is a memorial service for one of my last surviving aunts in mid July. She was 96. . . . I wonder if we will have strawberries and ice cream at the reception? 🤔

Here in the Pacific NW picking berries was a Summer job for many of us kids, you'd catch the berry bus at 5:30AM in front of a local store and they'd drive you to the farm, you would have a punch card safety pinned to your belt loop to keep track of how many flats you picked, it was a tough job but it put some spending money in our pockets
