Today I am in Milk River, Alberta, Canada interviewing Matthew of KJM Farms who is also a 4th generation 17-year-old farmer like me. Mom and I were in Alberta driving by and I saw a green John Deere tractor pulling the same kind of harrow I use. Mom said let's stop and visit!!! So my video today is a great interview with a Canadian neighbor farmer! A big thank you to KJM Farms and Matthew for telling me about his family farm in Canada!!!! Thank you for watching!!!

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th-generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

It's so nice to see eager young people working agriculture. It certainly is a lot harder then it looks...a lot of long hours. Many of my cousin's started out farming in Alberta and Saskatchewan when they were very young as well around 16 or 17 as you are. But as time passes most of them are into their 50s and are passing it on to their own kids now.

@@KatesAg The hard part is challenging conventional thinking. When I was your age the idea of spending $250K for a tractor was unthinkable. In the 90s when we suggested prescription application of fertilizers, farmers looked aghast.
Keep an open mind to emerging technology and science and at least hear them out. Many technologies are too expensive for all but the largest and most profitable farms. Fortunately, some of that eventually gets cheaper and trickles down to farmers fighting for their lives year after year.
Babygirl you are a beautiful girl and you have a lot of fun and you are amazing and smart enough for you to have a class and to teach them how to grow and harvest just like a professional as you are love. I'm looking forward for the next video of your life and your amazing

Hi Kate, this interview was absolutely stunning. Most viewers don't realize how difficult it is to interview a guest that might be a little shy or reluctant to embellish on his/her responses beyond a simple YES or NO to your questions. But you kept the questions coming rapid-fire - and very interesting questions too - which quickly relaxed the conversation to hear the differences in cross-border farming and to reveal your friend's knowledge and personality.
I hope your first love is farming Kate, because when the big-time producers see your natural talent they're likely to try to fit you into Oprah Winfrey's shoes or similar. Then again, who wants to be a TV star when you get to drive a John Deere 9870 combine, 6195R tractor or produce your own line of clothing accessories in your spare time? You're an amazing teenager Kate and a role model to your peers. All the best!

Hi Kate, welcome to Canada! Good discussion and sharing of ideas! Class 1 rules changed a lot - now more regulations and monitoring. Training costs are quite high to get a Class 1. Maybe you could plan to come north to the Calgary Stampede from July 8 - 17! Have a nice day! 😀

Thank you for a wonderful video. You are a very good interviewer, the next question just flowed from what he said with very few, um's well done. He was very into you, his body language was obvious, body line open, turned towards you, shame about the sunglasses, but I bet his eyes were focused on yours. You both exhibited an enthusiasm toward agriculture and the future, which bodes very well for the future of our food production. All around, a very good interview, you should do more.

I especially like this interview because it illustrates how farmers of different countries have more in common with each other than with their own countrymen..Catherine would have done what what you did.
I asked our daughter if she would like to see. Alberta. "Sure." The family napped and woke up in Alberta.
A farmer and I visited in a Brandon Man restaurant for so long we lost track of time and we were past Closing time. We offered to help the manager clean up.and it gave more time to chat.

Great video Kate! It is always great to watch other farms, especially if they are run by families. Today was fun, when I drove home I noticed a family having dinner at the field next to their tractor. And their baby was sitting in the high chair! Today I went to the cinema to watch 'Jurassic World'. In the movie they showed fields of grain completely overgrown by huge locusts. Do you like movies too? Many greetings, Marco

Welcome to Canada.... I guess you are accross the border from Alberta... Our farmers in Canada are not given the support they should have, Canada still does not consider food security a priority. Our farmers are faced with so much red tape and they are at the bottom of priorities while marketing bodies are treated as more important. Farmers are paid less and marketing bodies sometimes does not do what is best for farmers. I am so angry to see some municipalities given exceptions on switching Agri land into real estate development land.

Loved the interview. With drought being an ongoing issue on farms throughout the West, are you able to find any drought-tolerant cultivars for the family farm? This is an incredibly important area of research; perhaps you'll get a chance to look into it at Cornell. Which raises the question of will you be an Ag Business major or majoring in one of the areas of applied crop science?
Thank you for your wonderful kindness and great question. We are using drought tolerant varieties because we get about 10-12 inches of precipitation annually. Nothing can really survive on less moisture than that as far as a crop on the great high plains desert of Montana! I'm going to major in Communication with a minor in soil science and horticulture.
@@KatesAg Sounds like a good fit for what you are currently doing...and doing well. Soil is utterly fascinating and the things going on there at a micro-level hold the potential to transform our food supply. My daughter farms Lavender and I'm amazed at what the market for horticultural offerings has become. I've spent a few years working with soils myself; where I live we get about 5 inches of rain a year and our aquifers are seriously over-drafted. I'm looking to young folks like you to help us find a better way...

John Deere announced yesterday that it is leaving it's operation in Iowa
and will relocate in Mexico. This should be a Kick in the teeth of all
Americans especially our farming families. Could you please spread the

John Deere is not leaving. Tractor cab production is to be moved to Mexico. Will make room for new products fabrication. There is a workers shortage now in the country, also hitting John Deere. Many have dropped out for good, early retirement, during the pandemic.
We should design and build them here. Fridge and big comfortable seat with the controls on a swing arm
