Hi Kate, you do such a great job of finding new crops and interesting subjects plus you always know how to ask the right questions. You're very brave to cold call different farmers and ask for permission to interview them, you'd be great at sales. Your good manners, cheerful smile and high intelligence all add up to opening many doors for you. I'm curious to know why you're thinking of attending Cornell University, it's so far from your family, yes it'll be totally different than Montana, but traveling for home visits will be difficult and your family will miss you tremendously.

Thank you for your wonderful and kind words! Cornell was my #1 choice because it is one of the best universities in US. I was very honored to be accepted at an Ivy League University! We have family close there also.

Fascinating video, Kate. You are a natural journalist, my gosh! I’m stunned at how you, at only 17, are better than most journalist I’ve seen. It’s really uncanny how you think to ask questions that I’m thinking in my head. You ask all the right questions, you never interrupt, (I hate when journalists interrupt!) You have such a fantastic rapport with interviewees. You really knocked it out of the park, young lady. Your dad must be very proud of you. So, you have choices in life, farmer, producer, journalist. Please consider a Patreon account. I’d love to contribute to Kates story.

hi kate. another informative video, in the uk, we have rhubarb crumble with custard The Rhubarb Triangle is a 9-square-mile (23 km2) area of West Yorkshire, England between Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell famous for producing early forced rhubarb. In February 2010, Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb was awarded Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Rhubarb is native to Siberia and thrives in the wet cold winters in Yorkshire. West Yorkshire once produced 90% of the world's winter forced rhubarb from the forcing sheds that were common across the fields there. thank you.

Great video Kate! I like rhubarb very much. I suffer from hay fever quite a lot, but when I eat rhubarb the problem of the hay fever is immediately solved! Ha ha, just like mr French said, it is popular in the Netherlands! Maybe you remember my comment about the vegetable project for babies in the Netherlands. In this project families get a bag every week for eight weeks with vegetables for the babies. The families get a book with recipes and even a blender for preparing the food. It is important for the babies to get used to vegetables quickly, this promotes the development of taste and prevents them from eating fastfood later. Parents must continue this healthy food after the period of eight weeks. Well some scientists started evaluating the project and that turns out not to be good because the babies also have to set an example, they have to see that their parents eat it too (some parents eat fastfood and prepared the vegetables for their babies!). So now they try to make the project better. Parents should lead by example (just like your dad teaches you to drive the tractor!). They want the parents eat vegetables too.
I read an interesting story about the customers visiting the local farms to buy products from the farmers. Customers started driving more miles to get around and so that is not good for the environment (that says an international study). In addion to the supermarket, they also went to the farms. Still I think it is very important to buy products from local farmers. They get a much better price and the products are fresh and often not wrapped in plastics.
Today I heard Ukraine supplies 10% of all grain in the world. The farmers there are now trying to sow as much as possible despite the war. The problem is that farmers have to hand over their diesel fuel to the army. So it is complicated! Many greetings from the Netherlands

We grow rhubarb from "donated" plants. I was doing some landscaping and a person was turning his garden to lawn. I asked what he wanted done with the rhubarb plants. He said to take it away. It is called strawberry rhubarb. It seems sweeter than other varieties. My wife cuts it up and freezes it. It is good with pies and in rhubarb loaves. Your guest is right about the elephant ears. Thanks for sharing a different crop. Eating rhubarb when it is warm means that less sugar is required. Of course we cannot eat all that we can grow. The neighbours love it as well. 😊

Growing-up we grew rhubarb in the garden. We would eat it fresh, like celery. Perhaps an acquired taste, some people dip it in sugar. And of course rhubarb pie is popular. Our rhubarb in the garden had huge leaves, as discussed in the video.

hahaha yeah I'm a huge fan of sour always have been. I control diabetes with my diet but I don't like sweet so much anyway. Mom had to hide the aspirin from me when I was a little brat cuz I loved to crunch them up and eat em. Still love the flavor but a little smarter now. Not much, a little. lol

So a person who harvests rhubarb is called a rhubarber? I guess a collaboration with the apple orchard and your grain harvesting would make for awesome rhubarb and apple crumble or pie. Food, and tasty food at that, is always a priority with Kate. Stay safe and keep smiling.
