To get out some of the fishy taste bleed out the fish right away. Basically slice gill to gill like slicing the fishes throat and the heart will pump out the blood.
keep on it guys, you'll get the hang of it the more you get out there. And watch a lot of how to surf fish on YT. Locations might be different but the techniques are the same everywhere. You don't need really spend gear either...try & fund. nice 3000-4000 size reel and about a 9-10' rod. There are deals and you can get a nice setup for under $100 that will give you a bit better chance and reach... oh. simple mono line is fine until you feel more confident and a 600yd spool is under $10 vs about $100 for that much braid and braid is a whole different way of fishing... Best part about fishing is sharing time with your buddies and just getting away from the world for a few hours.... bet the cookout was a blast and tasted great!
