Asian Winged Beans - Growing Them For The First Time - Successes, Mistakes & Winged Bean Recipes

  • When I planted my Asian Winged Beans for the first time in 2021, I thought I'd gotten it wrong, and I did at first -- I planted them too late in the season - but they surprised me by popping back up the following April when the temperatures began warming up.
In this video I share with you a bit about the Asian Winged Bean and you can learn more about the crop on a variety of websites:
Learn More About Asian Winged Beans
    From University of Florida
    edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication...
There's even a book dedicated to the topic written several decades ago on Amazon.com
    amzn.to/3GQ416e
With protein content that gives soybeans a run for the money - it is a staple and relied upon food source in many countries.
    Buying Asian Winged Bean Seeds
I ordered my first bean seeds from a seller on Etsy. I've been pleased with everything I've ordered from PanAsiaHeirloom www.etsy.com/shop/PanAsiaHeir...
If you'd rather have a traditional seed company then you can buy Asian Winged Bean Seeds at both True Leaf Market

    and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

    Starting Asian Wing Bean Seeds
My first go-around I simply planted them directly in the ground. Next time I'll try soaking them at least for a few hours - maybe even until they sprout before planting them.
Asian Winged Beans are known as many different names including:
    Asparagus pea
    Winged pea
    Four Angled bean
    four-cornered bean
    Manila bean
    Cigarillas
    Princess bean
    Goa bean
    Kecipir
    Dragon bean
    Growing Asian Winged Beans
The Asian Winged Bean loves a hot humid climate, like here in our Northeast Florida garden. Considered a tropical legume it thrives in the heat and stops producing once the weather gets colder.
In my garden I planted it the hottest part of the yard where there is lots of mulch and the soil has been growing for a few years.
You'll want to be sure that you make plenty of room for the vines to grow as they are vigorous, growing 15 feet or more. Even with pruning it back it grew back quickly to reclaim it place in the peach and plum trees.
Next season I'll be sure to have a much longer place for the vines to sprawl, which I hope will make it easier to see the pods as they begin forming and growing. The bean taste best when you collect them before they get fibrous and tough. The smaller pods are great in salads. If you have a favorite way to make a stir fry - then you'll love adding these beans to your menu.

I don't have any of my own offical recipes to share - we are toss it in the pan and give it a try type of cooks, but I did find a few recipes that we are going to try soon. Let me know if you try them:

Hi I'm located in northwest Florida, I heard you say northeast Florida is where you are. I'm 8b where I am. I love wing beans. I'm giving them a try again this year, they didn't do very well last year but I have a better plan this year. I first learned about them from Regine (Asian Garden 2 Table) and then I bought some at one of the Asian Markets in Pensacola, FL, I was hooked! I just got some seeds in from Regine today among other Asian veggies from her. She is so knowledgeable and does a great job with teaching videos. Happy Gardening 2024!

Hello Mrs Michelle, you've talked me into finally trying these. I'm not sure why I always skip over them when catalog ordering. When you said "deep fried"...that did it. Should work in southern Tn.

Very helpful and enjoyable.Ive grown these beans both in Florida and in central Tennessee. A frost free Florida winter will allow these vining beans to continue producing bean pods. In Tenn. only a early hard freeze(2023) stopped the flower- laden and many podded plants fr om continuing. Central Tenn. gave me my best harvest yet from a June planting( using potted plants). Haven't tried the tubers but the leaves are good as greens or raw in salads. The 10 foot tall vines were trained to climb my high deck so trellises are really needed for these climbers. All in all,a fun and worthwhile vegetable to grow in warmer climates( zones 7-10) but may do ok in zones 5-6 if weather is favorable. Thanks for sharing this video

I just found out I could grow a certain variety of persimmon tree up here in Jersey! After seeing yours, of course I was envious. I just watched a video from a NJ gardener with a YT channel, called James Prigioni. He put up a video today about his persimmon tree! I must not have been paying attention, he must have shown it before. The reason I mention his video from today is because he has a great tip for ripening persimmons in the house and explains why it works. You probably already know this, but just in case: he says before the frost, or if you have pest issues, pick your persimmons, put them in a bag or container WITH ONE APPLE! The ethylene gas that the apple gives off will ripen those persimmons right up! I was excited to learn that, wanted to share it.

I had a hard time growing them because I didn't know about the day light neutral variety. I just ordered some and planning to grow them soon. What do you recommend for trellis size? ... if the beans are too old to eat fresh, you can save them on the vines to pick later to harvest the seeds.
It's so cold in my state, Minnesota, so it's hard to plant them here by the time they begin to give beans the weather change and they are tropical vegetables.
May i ask which state do you live in? How long to grow them from seeds to beans? Thanks

I'm in Florida. I don't have a good measurement on that, as the first year I planted them, I only got vines before it was too cold. The next year they came back, so I didn't replant them. @@michelleinthemeadow I have never planted them, it was even a problem to get the seeds, just one person in the whole internet in Ukraine sells them, the price was high, I bought 4 seeds. Some plants that have some kind of tubers ... calla flowers, potatoes don't need any moisture and soil when they are in hibernation period in the cellar or at home. I have no idea does it need to stay in wet ground or just stay in warm or cold place without soil. I haven't found any videos about growing this plant from tuber, but if it is possible it is more convenient because the plant will grow faster. I have about 4 months of warm season. From the middle of the May till the middle of September, but the night temperatures in September start to go down and rise in the afternoon, and at the beginning of May usually there is a period when the cold can come back. As I understand this plant should be grown when the temperature is permanently warm, without temperature changes. Theoretically if it loves warm it can be taken home, we have central heating in cold period, but there isn't enough day light in winter. It starts getting dark at 16.00 that is the stress for the plant.I will do experiment to find out which way to save it. Anyway thank you for answering.
