    So you're the one who discovered this technique of tipping your side shoots? When I saw your other videos on the topic of pruning green beans, I presumed you were passing on what you learned from other gardeners. That explains why I've never heard of it before. (I've never heard of these "winged beans" before, either, but I presume it's a variety of trellis-climbing green beans.) This is brilliant. I was just about to go out and start on my first pruning of a bed of Kentucky Wonder pole beans and was in search of guidance... I'm very glad I found this when I did. Can't wait to try this! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and the results of your hard earned research.

    Amazing!!! Here in Hawaii, they grow year round. Luckily. I do container gardening, so it’s a bit tricky with feeding routines and moisture. Most times rain helps but is not good for some plants due to diseases. But I love these beans. They are delicious. And most people don’t know that the whole plant can be consumed. Roots and all. This is the plant that if you grow it, you will never go hungry. Great video and amazing beans!!!! Wow!!!🙏🏼👍🏼

      what size containers do you use for winged bean? How many vines per container?

    • @simplysimple7628
      @simplysimple7628 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jolus6678 usually no smaller than 10 gallons. I make trellises out of concrete mesh. Kinda tough to handle but those things will last forever. I started with 3 vines per container but some beans wentbto seed and dropped in the containers and now there’s more than 3🤣 Probably like 8 per container and they’re doing good. Just keep adding compost and mulch and once in a while I hit em with some bloom fertilizer (high phosphorus and potassium) with some fish fertilizer (Alaska brand). Most I’ve harvested at one time was 4/ 5gallon buckets full to the brim. Had to share with my neighbors and family. Vines do die off and comeback again here. Not sure if it’s due to the weather or not but when they do comeback it’s full of beans again. Goodluck🙏🏼👍🏼🤙🏼

      @@simplysimple7628 , wow that’s amazing. It seems they’re heavy feeders but it’s sounds like they’re very much worth the trouble . I wish they could survive the summer heat here in Florida. But I guess this gives me time to build a grow box, trellis, and get all the amendments together. Thank you for the detailed response, very much appreciated.

    I have been trying to grow this in Oregon . This is my second year and one died already. I started indoors since it's warm inside. but after I planted outside, it's still too cold in Oregon in may and June over night it's 40degrees F. and it can not handle cold. it only like 70+ F. I will keep trying . but maybe I'll try next year again with a grow light /heat indoor until it's fully summer time and the temp isn't under 60 at night time. thank you for making videos.

No wait, i have a new recent favorite. The parsnip. Now i have to figure out how to make the worlds tastiest dish containing all 3. :D

    Thanks for showing us the pruning technique. I don't think I've seen any videos or scientific research on winged bean pruning.
    This technique is very similar to the cucumber plant pruning used in Taiwan, where instead of leaving 3 leaves on the side shoots, only 1 leaf is left.
    I'm currently planting winged bean plants for research purpose (for seed harvest) and there are more seedlings will be planted in the next coming week.
    This will help me a lot!

      I have attempted to grow these several times in Orange County. Germination rate is rather low (I plant scarified seedlings and have tried starting outdoors as well as indoors with lighting and heat pads.) After attempting 3 batches since May, I got one to germinate in July. It has grown slowly to 4 ft height despite being planted in the sun and watered well. I have lost hope that it will bear fruit this season. I am hoping that the vine does not wilt on winter and will come back as the growing season starts nezt year.

      You can't keep them fresh for very long. You'll need to preserve them by either freezing them, canning them (using a pressure canner, water bath canning is not recommended for green beans), or dehydrating them.
