    I grew these for the first time this year. Beans are very pretty. I harvested mine a month ago. I did not know that the flowers and roots were edible. I also wasn't aware that they could come back from the roots. Good to know as I did not pull them up as yet. I think I will see if they will come back next year.

      I wish I mulched them . It was so cold last week so I hope they are still okay. We will see come spring. Have a great week! Thanks for watching!

    That basket full of beautiful towards the end!!! These still capture my eye as the most beautiful bean I’ve seen :) Thinking of trying some late this season, the spot I’m thinking gets all day sun which is in the low 70’a and we don’t drop below 50’s at night.

    Weather does remain much milder for you Misilla. Been several nights in the single digits and lower teens here along the NE border. But this is quickly turning into mid-December too. -Bob...

      Hi and thank you! I have some scarlet runner beans, but they’re a few years old. I may have to test their viability. I hope you’re having a good spring!

    I just added Scarlet runner beans to my list of things to grow this summer in Illinois. I'm looking forward to your seed giveaway. Maybe mr. Cheapocan save the cost of having to buy some himself. Have a good one.. 😎😎😎

    I live in 8b! I am just outside of Portland. I am so happy to have found your channel! I planted Scarlet runners and now with all this rain I am worried about rot soon. when you harvest the pods still large and green, may I dry the beans in a food dehydrator? can I still eat those green pods? Than you!!!!

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phillip,
      Greetings! I’m north of Seattle. Yes you can eat the large pod cooked. You can blanch then freeze them. I usually let them ripen and dry naturally on the vines, but yes you can dehydrate them. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend! Misilla

    I live in 8b in the PNW .. I have never had the scarlet runners come back the next year. I keep trying and hoping though

      I’m going to mulch mine to see if they make it back. If they have the tuberous roots, they might come back. Some don’t grow them. Have a great day! Thanks for stopping by!

    I can’t believe it’s already July! Is it too late to go ahead and plant these?

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi it takes 80 days for it to mature. You can probably get a small harvest by end of September. I can’t believe how quick this year has gone! Have a great weekend! Misilla

    these are gorgeous. when do you start them and do you just direct sow or start in starter trays? I am growing some drying beans this year and the only ones I've grown before are borlotti beans for drying ones. I have some options this year and limited space so trying to figure out which to grow and when to start the long growing beans to be dried in summer or before fall rains in October. Do you dry or freeze them?
    (so ends my 20 questions. lol) thanks for any info.

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amy I sow the bean seeds when the soil temperature is at least 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. I usually let the beans dry in the pods then harvest, but can be frozen or cooked fresh!

      @@LearnToGrow1 Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure when I should start drying beans. I've grown the borlottis but not any other variety for drying. I tried lima beans but it was too late in the season and they were small when I had to harvest them due to damp cold weather and they were not drying well. Thanks again for doing your blog. It's interesting to see what you're doing and compare what I know against what you are talking about and have experience with.:)

    Tried scarlet runner beans for first time this year in Oregon beautiful flowers but no beans started seeing little beans but nothing happened any suggestions

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi if the temperature goes over 85 F the fruits won't grow. When it starts to cool down, they should start producing. The tiny beans will eventually grow into bigger pods. Thanks for watching!

  • @genevievefortruth

    I would like to grow these!! I actually tried last year but they all failed. I was shocked, but truth be told I didn't put any compost them. Do they take a lot of water, or little?

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can tolerate summer heat and actually do fine in dry soil. Mulching should help retain moisture so you don’t need to water as much. Grow them like you normally grow other beans and adding compost helps. Thanks for watching!

    Do we need to wait till beans are dry on vine or can we pick them when their still green to dry

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sabby yes you can pick the mature pods when they turn leathery and dry them indoors or outdoors in a shaded area. 😊
