African Blue Basil for a Pollinator's Paradise

I am obsessed with this African Blue Basil and how awesome it is in the garden. It's easy to grow, hard to kill, and the pollinators love in. In this video I tell you a bit more about growing it, and show you the progress my plants have made this summer.
I asked Gemini to provide us additional context, and here's what I learned:
African Blue Basil, also known botanically as Ocimum kilimandscharicum × basilicum 'Dark Opal', is a hybrid basil variety that stands out for its unique characteristics and captivating beauty.
Distinguishing Features:
Appearance: It boasts stunning dark green leaves with striking purple veining, further complemented by purple stems, flowers, and flower spikes.
Scent: The entire plant emanates a warm, sweet camphor aroma, making it a sensory delight.
Growth Habit: It tends to grow as wide as it is tall, often forming a bushy, rounded shrub.
Sterility: It is a sterile hybrid, meaning it does not produce seeds and can only be propagated through cuttings.
Perennial Nature: Unlike many other basil varieties, it is perennial, meaning it can live for several years, especially in warmer climates.
Uses & Benefits:
Ornamental: Its vibrant colors and attractive growth habit make it a popular choice for ornamental gardens and landscaping.
Culinary: While its flavor is stronger than that of sweet basil, it can still be used in culinary applications, particularly in dishes that benefit from a more robust basil flavor.
Pollinator Attractant: Its abundant flowers are a magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to any pollinator-friendly garden.
Growing Tips: Sunlight: It thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Soil: It prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during hot and dry periods, but be careful not to overwater as this can lead to root rot.
Pruning: Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and helps to maintain its shape.
Propagation: As it is sterile, it can only be propagated through cuttings taken from healthy plants.
In summary, African Blue Basil is a versatile and visually appealing herb that offers a unique blend of ornamental, culinary, and ecological benefits. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a beginner, this captivating plant is sure to add a touch of beauty and fragrance to your outdoor space.

Michelle, I love African Blue Basil too!! The pollinators really do love it also, the plant is always alive with native bees. I need to take some cutting from mine too. This is a must have plant for me. I planted Seminole pumpkins for the first time about a month or two ago and the green caterpillars are really taking a toll on the leaves. The vines are still “growing on”though. 😊

Now that its been two years. What do you think of them both ?? 2024, Australia has become little China so in all honesty it doesn’t really matter where you buy it from! Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. I’m in Northwest Florida and have 2- 1000 square-foot in ground gardens and am considering slowly but surely replacing with raised beds. We have a metal roofing manufacturer here near Panama City and they sell double sided painted sheets so my neighbor made her raised garden out of that material and I’m thinking that the paint would definitely protect from aluminum leakage, but I am considering these as well..

I have 14 birdies beds so far. I only have the tall in 6' and none of them have the braces, they are all fine after about 4 years. I do have braces in some low beds that are 8' or more and havent seen a problem yet. The high beds do settle up to a foot a year still. seems every spring Im still buying a lot of peat. I have used them for composters for a year or two filling with whatever leaves, waste I can get. The next high bed I fill, I may try filling the bottom half or 2/3 with sand, then soil on top to try to curb the sink.

Hi 🖐🏽 yes I have them planted around just before hurricane 🌀 Beryl hit us. They were in seed trays 🙌🏽so safe safe. We're in Houston 9b. I can't find information about how long before they fruit. A channel showed day 1 and 45. Anyway, I planted a few plants on the north, south, east and nw of the house, trying to figure which side is best for next year. ☺️ Houston heat is a beast. But I bought a traveller's palm from someone in Florida & giant white birds of paradise and 😮😅 they're like... bring it. Hurricane 🌀 Beryl did bend my one year old traveller's but didn't uproot her. I do hope I get lots of wing beans before mid November. Ah ☝🏽🥳 I have green and purple variety. Thank you for sharing your successes and failures. If I get half your harvest, I'll consider it a bumper crop. I do want to pickle and can some for power outages during hurricane 🌀 season ❤ blessings to you and your family

My area just got the stuffing kicked out of us by Beryl. I hope you do not get hit nearly that hard. Fortunately summer is downtime here so the damage wasn't as bad as it could have been. For the orchard row trees - 3/8" rebar is really cheap at HD/Lowes. I like to buy the 10' lengths and cut them in half with an angle grinder but you can also buy 5' lengths. Jam those into the ground by a foot or so and tie the skinny little trees to them. The rebar is flexible but if anchored deeply it will help brace them. Good luck to you. Be safe!

I put excess cat food out in the back of the yard and it keeps most of the raccoons out of the garden. But they are terrorizing my neighbor, who is feeding the cats, while I am gone. I also put an electric fence around the main garden but it will ground out while I am away as the weeds grow. I'm sure the coons will have a feast on the corn I left growing as soon as they get past the fence.

You might try "Safer 5929 Critter Ridder Animal Repellent". or a Motion Activated Water Sprayer. Considering what you have been dealing with I think your garden looks great. Thank you for sharing your progress with us.

Thank you, Wendy. Ooh, I like the motion activated water sprayer idea. I'm going to check that out.
