    I’d been using MicroSD cards for years, not necessarily because I went out of my way, but simply that when I need one in that moment, the MicroSD cards were all that Wal-Mart carries that were actually fast.
    I’ve not had problems with any of them, and they handle 100 mbps from my A7C just fine. However, I don’t tend to ever remove them from the adapter, so this may mitigate potential issues with the additional point of contact.
    Of all the flash media I’ve owned the past twenty years, I’ve only had a few failures. A 16 MB Panasonic SD card, a Patriot 1 GB Micro SD card, and a 32 GB Kingston flash drive.

  • @gwapster13
    @gwapster13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Good warning but this is over generalisation. If your adapter has good contacts and fits the microsd really well... it all just depends on the speed and reliability of your microsd. I have benchmarked a few microsd with adapters before and it all turned out good.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Literally the video is just a warning. As many have said and commented. They’ve had issue too and failures. So it’s not just an over generalization. It’s case to case sure. There’s zero point in risking it though. Sd cards are very affordable now.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, it depends on the quality of the microsd adapter. I have tested many, and they are all over the map. Do you really want to trust one is the question.

      Well microsd should not be used in a camera designed for full size SD cards.
      Now saying that, and newer cameras only use microSD cards. I use a DJI pocket OSMO camera all the time. It writes 100 megabit 4K video files and I have been using it now for almost a year using a Lexar 633x A1 ultra speed 3 v30 microsd 128 gig. I have also used that same card, also recording video at 100 mbit on my Sony FDR-AX100 using a micro sd to sd adapter with no trouble at all. The same could not be said for a Sandisk 128 gig Ultra Plus card. Both the microSD version and the full size SD card both came up with an error message on both my Sony cameras warning me that the write speed was too slow for 100mbit but they work fine at 60. I don't have any experience with Samsung microSD. I do have one that was sent to me as a promo. An EVO plus, but I have not tried it for 4K recording as it is only a 32 gig card. Too small for what I do.

      They will work, but you are compromising your speed. I also use microSD in cameras that require them, and when I put them into an SD adapter and into my SD reader they read painfully slow. I can take it out of one SD adapter and into another and it reads faster, but still too slow. My SD card reader is a USB3 type. I can take the microSD card out, and put in in my ancient USB2 microusb reader and plug that into a USB port on the computer and it reads much, much faster.

    • @lionellosanti
      @lionellosanti 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends. it didnt' work for me with videos because I suppose they require more speed for writing. It worked pretty well for photos tho.

    • @PTechMedia
      @PTechMedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Speed depends on device supporting it. Same with size. Larger SD cards generally had smaller limitations. You have to bear this in mind.
      The adapters are nothing more than wires to realign the pins.
      If a camera can only support a 32gb SD card it can only support 32msd

  • @4partmedia
    @4partmedia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The number reason to use micro SD card is when you are out in the field shooting and want to quickly see how the shots / video are turning out on a bigger screen-- a tablet. This is very beneficial for all photogs: the ability to have a lightweight previewing device on hand, instead of hoping it'll look good at home when it's already too late to reshoot. Micro SD's have been doing the same as SD cards according to many reviewers and personal anecdotes. I'm considering getting a tablet to check my video work on the spot-- most tablets have micro slots. USB adapter to Micro would just add another thing to lose/break while connected.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm really a tablet? It depends on the user. Most it seems use actual monitors and laptops. Thats interesting though that some use tablets. That being said, this video isnt saying to abandon micro SD, just be careful thats all.

    My Samsung EVO micro sd works fine for continuous 4k video playback with an adapter with read speeds up to 100mbs. Only thing that can cause failure perhaps is that extra layer and dust or damage to the connectors.

  • @st08121982
    @st08121982 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I mostly use Sandisk, Lexar and sometimes Sony .
    I once put a Sandisk Ultra Class 10 MicroSD in a Samsung SD card adapter and used this in a Nikon 3300 to record 1080p @60 fps . This was purely for laughs and giggles, but it worked . I recorded around 5 clips of 10 minutes each . Worked perfectly.
    Then I formated the MicroSd and put it in my Samsung Galaxy .

    If you open up the adapter it's just micro pins to normal size pins there is no converting of signals or anything like that just metal traces. So it's not gonna cause slow down or anything. Possibly failure because it's not making contacts if your adapter is super cheap

  • @Razor2048

    One of the main issues is that micro SD cards are not designed for lots of writes. They often use lower quality flash, as well as compromises such as triple level flash or quad level flash. They are find if they won't get too many writes over their life, but in a camera where you may be filling them on a daily basis, they will likely corrupt far sooner than a full sized SD card, where they can go with a die size that can get away with 2 bit per cell flash.

      take the card out and see if its locked, theres a small switch on the side of it. If its locked it may be the issue

    I just recently switched from film to digital and got a Nikon D300 and I do have a question as I can not find an answer. It takes a CF card and I have read that on the D300 it does not like anything over a 16g card (not sure of how true that is), could you offer some insight as to what I should look for? Thanks!

    They're also not good in a tablet or phone if you're going to take a lot of video and images with them. Micro SD broke. 10 year warranty so no loss except for the images. It's one of the reasons I bought an actual camera.

  • @ArchLinuxTux
    @ArchLinuxTux 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    All the zNikons seem to be keyed in such a wzy that adaptor will not fit. . And enen though it sounds like a good way to save a buck, its not worth it because there is now a second chance to bend a pin and then the camera may want to format the card for whatever odd reason , it may see the card as corrupt, looking for a specific format.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never said it was, just a caution. Plenty of people did have issues trying to use the micro SD instead. Others havent had an issue, thats all. So its NOT a fact, just a warning.

  • @kfotoprm

    Surely, the "Camera" will give an "Error" message, prior to recording, so you will know, that it may not be "Seated" properly.

    Eric: Off topic but this should be of interest...have you tested or do you plan to test the new Commlite Version Electronic Lens Mount Adapter
    CM-ENF-E(1)? Quote: It is featured with double-side electronic signal transmitting
    based on the mount adapter from Nikon F lens to Sony E-mount Camera or
    Camcorders, successfully achieve the functions of EXIF parameter
    transmitting / Aperture adjustment / AF (mainly for AF-I, AF-S which
    comes with lens' internal motor) / IS funtion, and highly increases the
    adapter convenience. Unquote.

      all depends on what you want to do, if you want more video focused get the 7D, if you want more photo side of things get the D7000. If you want something more portable and has a good mix of photo/video is a good option.

    I wondered about this for so long. Glad to see someone addressed the issue. I never used the adapters though because I felt like it was one more "route" the photos had to go through which could possibly degrade the photos, even the smallest amount. Its not worth it, just buy full sized cards.

    In my case works similar. I have two 64 Gb Kingston u3 cards - one sd, other microsd (I bought it for Samsung Note3). MicroSd I keep as secondary card, when Sd is full. No problems. You only must use original adapter, that comes with MicroSd card.

    Thanks dude. You saved me a lot of time. For those saying that this isn't true.......
    He's not saying that the micro sds don't work at all. He's saying that the cameras, at least the ones he's referring to, were not designed for the micro sds. They're designed to be compatible with the full sized sds. I think it's pretty straight forward logic..it's not to say that adapters won't work, it's that the ones that the camera is designed for will work better and more consistently.
