Original April was not a damsel in distress. She'd help the turtles, sometimes get kidnapping as part of the job, but was never put in a negative light. They do a disservice to the character when "remaking" her, but thats on par for making Donatello super nerdy so you know he's the geek of the team, and Raphael has to be a hulk now so you know he's a fighter.

I've been rewatching the original 1980s TMNT show and it's fantastic to watch it again. I love April O'Neil in the show, my favourite version of April is the 2003 series and the 1990 TMNT movie with Judith Hoag. Her performance is marvellous.
First 4 seasons of the 2003 version is my favorite tmnt of all time. Sadly the rest of the seasons of this series kinda got boring

To be fair. The OG April, from the TMNT comics, had curly dark hair, not red hair..
But she wasn't black. And she certainly wasn't a 'fat acceptance' walrus.
As a kid I has to fight nail and tooth against my mom to get a TMNT action figure. And I loved the series (it had a German intro song that was pretty iconic here).
And yeah, April was a capable woman and also a very welcomed eye candy between all these burly mutants.
To think that she's now uglier (and possibly heavier) than Rocksteady makes me sad.

I've been re-watching the original TMNT cartoons. I love them. I remember why TMNT was such a big phenomenon for kids in the late 80s. I remember why we played the game even though it had so many classic NES issues. It seems like people have quite literally forgotten how to just be entertaining. Everything has to be political crap. TMNT set out purely to entertain kids and it still holds up today. If you've noticed attacks on nostalgia over the past decade, it's all because nostalgia is the worst enemy of progressive revolutionary psychos. Nostalgia is memory of how things were so much better before they "improved society."

Exactly this is why (with a few exceptions) most of the entertainment i enjoy & invest in are things from a time when entertainment was entertaining. If one of the many red flags are spotted in something new i proceed to pretend like it doesn't exist. Won't talk about it, won't look at it & damn sure won't support it with money. I shrug & go back to enjoying what i like. My suggestion to others has been just that. Indifference & lack of $$ support is what kills this shit quick. Man I loved the original TMNT comics written by Eastman and Laird. They were crude and violent. It was the perfect comic for me when I was a teenager. When the Last Ronin came out, I was so excited bc it was a direct continuation from the OG comics. And now, I can't wait for the video game of Last Ronin to come out. Sad to see what the turtles' legacy has come to today. Hopefully, it'll recover. I'm optimistic about that. TMNT can't die. It's had its falters, but I know it'll come back to stardom like it did all those years ago

Changing a character's race and making them look like a fat, ugly, and offensive stereotype does not make them "relatable" nor "grounded", their personality, actions, backstory, and motivations is what truly makes a character relatable and grounded, and if I were a black woman I would be even more mad at April's new design knowing that 4 out of 5 people of the same race and gender as me are overweight and are very often being represented as such in an unflattering Manor in Media. On another note I find it weird and ironic that the same people in Hollywood and other media Industries who "hate" racism and praise diversity constantly turn white minorities like Gingers and natural redheads like April O'Neil into black people.

Yeah, I watch less than half as many movies now as I did just a few years ago. Also, I had subscriptions to HBO Max, Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus. Now I have none of those and very little interest in trying again. Anime makes up about 90% of the shows I watch, all from Crunchyroll for $10/month.

It would have honestly been better for the studio to follow the design for "Black April" from the 'Rise of the TMNT' show, or better yet, they should have taken April's design from the 3rd issue of the original TMNT comics, which is ironically the issue that defenders of this "april" design pointed to, because in it she decided to have a makeover by getting a perm and the colouring of the comic panels made people assume she was black.
Taking that design and de-aging it so she looks like a high-schooler, would have been a massive improvement that fits the 80's vibe better than the film's design of "girl who looks like she's a university school paper reporter in her late 20's".

Went to see the new movie with my kids. First interaction between Leo and the new April O’Neil was literally “what a beautiful human being”. I thought Donatello was the one in need of seeing glasses.

A reminder that we should be paying more attention to Japanese animators. Most of them are very passionate about their work, and they dedicate +14rs a day to meet those ridiculous deadlines. Not all Japanese animations are great, but they are miles ahead of whatever American entertainment can dish out.
Not sure rewarding burnout like that is a good idea either, it feels more like rewarding one bad behavior because we don't like another, but yes, quality work should get more attention than slipshod work, regardless of the hours put in.

As Gundam AI version of a black April O'Neil shows. A race swap could have been done in good faith. But the goal is actually to destroy.
