Thank you for your info.....I have done 2 rugs so far......so addicting....hopefully everyone in the family wants a rug for Christmas.........FYI from my experience it is much cheaper to cut your own strips from a 100% cotton batting, took about 10 minutes easy peasy, if you order the rolls you will need 2 rolls for the rug and gets expensive, my batting was $15 compared to the $25 for the pre cut strips of batting......
I'm glad that I read the reviews before investing time in watching Kea Bee talk. Not that she doesn't have good comments, but I need to see something in the way of a demonstration to know if this project will be a good one to attempt. Thanks, just the same, Kea. I'll still watch you from time to time.
Kea, thank you! Please what is the name of the jelly roll you used. The colors are amazing. Also, the big question, have ever laundered one of those rugs???
I have not made the rug, but plan on it. I have seen one done and it is very nice. I have thought about using flannel, not sure if that is a good idea. There is a sewing shop in our area that does a class on it.
Great job with the tips! Question though on starching every two turns or so by breaking thread...does this add a lot of thread build up by stopping and starting? Not sure I explained my question well enough...hope so. Again, hats off on your video...easy to watch.
Question 1: I realize this would take a lot more time but if the batting were cut in half and run down the middle of the fabric strips there would be much less bulk? I can see where it might be more difficult to fold the fabric and batting over and I don’t know if this would be an advantage or not. Question 2: Also do you think these rugs will stand up to wear and tear or should they be in a less trafficked area?
did you ever do this CJ 1419 with strip down the middle insyead of the full width?....i think this would sew better and maybe use a little heavier batting. there would just be 2 layers rather than 4 of batting. so was just wondering if you treid it that way and what you thought?
thank you for these tips, good to have! your intro was a bit frustrating having to wait 1:35 before finally getting to your content, maybe shorten that up some.
Thank you for all the tips. I've had this pattern for a couple months but just recently found the jelly roll I wanted to use. Can you give more info on the batting roll?
Especially in the earlier rounds, when you get to the part of the strip that will have to curve to turn the corner/bend run a gathering thread by hand on the very inner edge of the strip you're about to sew on and gather it up a little (as much as you need) to ease the strip in as you sew. This way it will be created flat in the first instance and not need to be forced flat later. I learned this principle from heirloom sewing where you pull the thread in the header of the lace to do curved lace insertions - like the inside of this heart: th-cam.com/video/J0G-sscqLjo/w-d-xo.html For our purpose here we are creating our own "gathering thread" by putting it in by hand and then pulling it to create the curve that lays flat. It's a bit of extra work, but it is easy and very satisfying to have it sewn flat in the first place.
Thanks for all the tips! Great things that we may not have thought of. I appreciate you taking the time to help others like me that would definitely struggle making this. Love the fabric that you used. Happy Week! 🌺🌼🌸
Kea the problem I’m having with making my jelly roll rug is it ends up so curly. I finished it once and it was so wavy that it couldn’t be pressed. I wrote Roma and she told me to rip it out and start over but didn’t address the issue. Do you have some tips to avoid this I’m 5 rows in and have the same problem 😕 getting ready to rip it out again!
Linda Roehler I have the same problem! Some tutorials talk about rolling up like a bowl but mine is wavy, and is a mess to press out. Everything else looks great! I can’t tell if I am making using too much pressure and not relaxed enough or if it’s the opposite problem.
Maybe whilst sewing the ‘tail’ into the body section, you pull slightly more on the tail. Waviness often happens when the outside strip is looser compared to the body section
I just used my normal needle that I use for piecing quilts, I didn't have any problem with it. Also, when joining the batting you do not need to have seams. Just but the two ends together and use a zig zag stitch. I didn't even do that, I just butted them together and sewed my fabric right to it.
Those are some great tips Colleen! Thank you! You are right about the batting, I shouldn't have used the term "seams," I as well but the 2 ends together with a zig-zag stitch.
Thanks for sharing your tips for making the rug. For those complaining you didn't actually demonstrate the tips they should understand without permission you can only say and show so much. I get the impression the pattern designer is a bit persnickety about too many details being shared.
Isn't this an Aunties Two technique? Aunties has been using this technique for years and has four or five patterns written using batting in 2 1/2" fabric strips. Shouldn't RJ Designs come up with her own idea?
Sharon, they can absolutely be machine washed! In the pattern she talks about the importance of starching again after each wash... this will allow the rug to lay flat again. Thank you so much for watching!
I really don't know what to say. I don't want to be rude, but it's not really helpful listening to you talk about a project you made. You don't even point anything out on your rug while you're talking. For anyone with dyslexia, this video is a bit pointless. Makes no sense! Also, your intro is not really making any sense.
Thank you for the feedback Paula. This video is only intended to give some Tips and Tricks as people are preparing to make the rug. It is not a tutorial. What part of the pattern are you struggling with, I'd be happy to try and help? I appreciate your willingness to join us in fostering an encouraging environment for quilters!
Thanks Kea. I have been wanting to try this very project. I was gonna wing it because I always think I don't need a pattern, I'll save money! But...I don't save frustration :) Ok I'll get the pattern and also I madly scribbled all your tips. Many I had not heard before. Thanks so much!
Kea isn't doing a tutorial because she would need permission from the pattern designer. I have this pattern but haven't done anything with it yet. Didn't even read it yet. I've read people say keep the rug flat while sewing it. One lady said she had the aluminum baking pans and propped up the rug and it stopped the wobbly from happening. Also read to use a bigger zig zag stitch helps to keep it from wobbling. Maybe in a few weeks I can get mine done.
Thanks for joining us in the give Theresa! I am a very visual person as well :) That's why I love TH-cam! I love that I can see and hear helpful tutorials and Tips & Tricks to better my quilting skills! Thank you so much for watching!
Kea Bee I don't come on TH-cam to listen to someone talk about something they've done. Maybe you should title your talks so people who don't want to listen can have the option to skip that video. I was only saying that if you're trying to give tips you could have at least had the photo of the rug and held it and pointed out places on the rug that you were talking about. Then at least people could see what you meant and at what part etc etc. I'm not trying to be nasty. Please don't get upset or defensive. I'm trying to be helpful and I'm probably saying something many people are thinking but are too worried to say because they don't want to look like a bi*$% like I probably do. I'm just giving my opinion because I like your channel and I thought it would help having some constructive critique. I get the feeling from other replies you've given me that you're offended. I'm not trying to upset you.... :) i hope you have a great day!
Totally rude! If you had taken the time to read through most of the comments, instead of busting your chops at her you would have found out why! I could be nice & tell you, but I think not, you can just read thru and find out - GOOD GAWD lot of complainers on here! Thank you KB for your time! Disregard those that have no common sense.
It’s better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. Your comment was ridiculously rude and totally unnecessary...
There are so many negative comments. I want to thank you for your tutorial. All tips are helpful in my opinion!

Do you have a link for that spray or can you tell me the name of it. Edited just to say thank you I love your tips.
If you make it half the size, would that work as a centerpiece on a dining room or kitchen table?
Kea, thank you! Please what is the name of the jelly roll you used. The colors are amazing. Also, the big question, have ever laundered one of those rugs???

Also, I found the booklet pattern you used & it came with 2 rolls of the batting you refer to. $39 for all 3 on Amazon.
Just loved your video. How about a demo on how you did it?
Hi Kea, Love your jelly roll rug. Is the batting the same kind used for making quilts?
These are beautiful rugs. I'm interested to know how well they wash. Have you done that, yet?
I love that rug !!! I want to make one just like it !! thanks
Beautiful rug. Thank you for your tips. I am going to make a little Ruby rug for my grand daughter.
I love the quilt backdrop behind you. The larger one. Do you know the pattern?
Thanks for your tips. I think that might just be my next project.
What is the name of the batting and measurement when you buy it?
what is the name of the fabric line used used on the wall hanging over your right shoulder?? looks like another Bonnie & Camille.
I wish I could have visually seen how to make it, it’s beautiful, I’m going to try and find a video, I’m from the show me state, lol Very beautiful!
I love this idea. Started mine yesterday. I can NOT figure how to do the curve. 😥
What can you add to one side of the rug that would keep it from sliding or slipping on vinyl or wood floors?
Hey blebeck! I grabbed a no slip mat from our local Dollar Tree (dollar store) and it fit perfectly! In the studio I have tile floors, it works great!
Thank you for all the tips. I've had this pattern for a couple months but just recently found the jelly roll I wanted to use. Can you give more info on the batting roll?
How do you keep it from curling. I press and press and still curls?
Especially in the earlier rounds, when you get to the part of the strip that will have to curve to turn the corner/bend run a gathering thread by hand on the very inner edge of the strip you're about to sew on and gather it up a little (as much as you need) to ease the strip in as you sew. Thank you Pam! I'm glad you find this helpful! I LOVE this fabric! Have a great week!
What do you do,when as your rug grows the edges start to “wave”?
5boys1mom using your irn press it down about every three rows.
Imma have to bust out the damn iron arent I. Damnit this thing is rolling hard.
@@FatNebraskaMom how’d that rug come out?
Kea the problem I’m having with making my jelly roll rug is it ends up so curly. I finished it once and it was so wavy that it couldn’t be pressed. Have the same problem. Seen a coupple videos no one addresses the issue.
Maybe whilst sewing the ‘tail’ into the body section, you pull slightly more on the tail.
Waviness often happens when the outside strip is looser compared to the body section
Thank you for all the tips. Just starting my first rug and any tips certainly help.
Did you use a zig zag stitch? I don't see your stitches at all. Does the instructions have the dimensions you can make?
I did use a zig-zag stitch, it discusses that inside the pattern! Good luck sewing!
What type of thread do you use?
I just used my normal needle that I use for piecing quilts, I didn't have any problem with it. Also, when joining the batting you do not need to have seams. Just but the two ends together and use a zig zag stitch. I didn't even do that, I just butted them together and sewed my fabric right to it.

Do you think it would be good for placemats? How many placemats do you think one jelly roll would make?
This would be adorable as placemats! My GUESS would be maybe 4 placemats... I'm not really sure!
Thank you for the tips. I totally want to make a rug for each of my kids. Will pick up the pattern and get started!
Amy you should! They are super fun!!!
Where do you get the pattern
Thank you for all the tips. I love your rug!
How many rolls do I need to make that leg rug? Thanks, karen
I think you are great! Very thorough..and cute as a bug!
Thanks Kea for your time 😄
Your quilts are beautiful!!! Subscribing now!
Thank you so much Lori!
I couldn't understand the spray starch tip on how exactly that would help. A short demonstration would have been nice. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your tips for making the rug. For those complaining you didn't actually demonstrate the tips they should understand without permission you can only say and show so much. I get the impression the pattern designer is a bit persnickety about too many details being shared.

Sharon, they can absolutely be machine washed! In the pattern she talks about the importance of starching again after each wash... this will allow the rug to lay flat again. Thank you so much for watching!
I thought it was helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips. However it would be nice if you demo some of the tips. Instead of just talking.
Thank you Norene Divita for the suggestion!
Love your vids.
What size denim needle did you use?
Hi Brenda! I used 130/705 H-J 100 which is what my machine calls for. Thanks for joining me in the Hive today!
Kea Bee awesome! Thank you!
she used size 16 needle.
The pattern is so badly written, I wanted my back. I doubt anyone could follow it without the various TH-cam tutorials.
Hi! Please do a video on making this rug. Thanks
I love your rug! This would be great to make for my granddaughters rooms. I need to get the pattern now. ☺
That is large rug?
Sapporo nice

Hello peeps did you hear her intro? Haha Love all your helpful hints Kea.
Thank you for the encouragement Lorraine!
I also prefer a hard copy as opposed to a online pattern
Thanks Kea. I have been wanting to try this very project. I was gonna wing it because I always think I don't need a pattern, I'll save money! But...I don't save frustration :) Ok I'll get the pattern and also I madly scribbled all your tips. Many I had not heard before. Thanks so much!
I appreciate the attempt you’ve made to give tips. Since it’s a paid for pattern, I think it’s impossible to show any helpful visual tips.

Cut to the chase, give us quilting info and be done.
HEADS UP.....there is no demo here....it's all talking.
You re absolutely right Judy Wirkkala, this is a Tips and Tricks video on my experience of making the Jelly Roll Rug. Just a helpful chat!
I pressed and starched my rug everytime I went Round once.
KB... I've worked with older women and newbees. They are visual......just sayin......

You talk to much and don’t show a demo of your tips
I really wanted to subscribe but. . .
No offense but I’d have preferred to have tips SHOWN. We come to TH-cam for that reason, otherwise we would probably just read! Sorry
For a whole 10 min and 43c sec you said absolutely nothing worthy. Rather show , teach the pattern or shut up!
Totally rude! If you had taken the time to read through most of the comments, instead of busting your chops at her you would have found out why!
