Hi little tip to stop stitches from skipping,I noticed that you have a Janome sewing machine, I have a Janome sewing machine and to stop your stitches from skipping I use purple tip Janome sewing needles and that stop the stitches from skipping good luck thankyou for sharing your video ❤️

When I made my first JR rug years ago there were no tools to help make the rope. I’ve used several different tools since. Now I’ve discovered Clovers JR tool and what a joy! I made six rugs for Christmas gifts last year in half the time it used to take me. I think I’m going to get a second tool as a spare. I’m so bad about misplacing things. I cannot thank Clover enough for making this product.
Well, one thing my Mom and her Aunts did that might help you with Jelly Roll Rugs is, they used very clean, only used for fabric projects Trans Cans with clean Laundry Bags inserted and tied off securing them to the rim of the can. Large Fabric Projects, they would have this on the other side of the table and let the project flow into the laundry bag lined can in case a washing was needed, or ironing, They did this for large Blanket Projects, Curtains and Jelly Roll Rugs the size of a large living room making as big as an 18 foot by 12 foot oval.
Whether I’m making a long length quilt binding, rug roll, or rag rug lengths, I collect the lengths in a clean plastic waste basket. That way my fabric stays clean and contained and very easy to sew from without getting anything tangled or dirty. I also use the clean waste basket at my ironing station when ironing my quilt binding in half to collect it while I’m pressing it. Works great!

And she set her zigzag to have the broken stitch, as opposed to the solid stitch to join. I have a brother, which is a computerized model and it has that stitch. I’m in the watch videos before starting phase temp has the batting cheaper, so I’m going to compare that to the more expensive one. This is a great tutorial, and your rug is fabulous. Thanks for posting. My son, who is 33, has to drive all over for his job, and he made the gps voice, and I quoted, to which I just shook my head and rolled my eyes, but it’s a sexy Aussie girl. Ha. I have to admit, it is pretty cool!.
Hello! I have used the broken zig zag stitch, but only as a last resort if I am having lots of skipping stitch problem and the usual changing needles, slowing down, changing threads things don’t fix it. And haha for having an Aussie voice as the GPS! I actually have an English voice on mine 😂😂

This would make a great bathmat if you make a rectangular shape. I’ve done some bowls and shapes with washing line and it’s the same technique but faster!

We found it on ebay, but places like Officeworks (in Australia) have them too. Mine is actually powered, so I just have to press a button and it goes up and down to just the perfect spot! That was very handy for doing the jelly roll rug!

It can be quite tough getting that centre done. Do a little bit (not even one full round) and then take to iron and press with starch. Do a bit more sewing and then back to iron, starch and press. It gets a bit crinkly but the starch keeps it flat. Just keep on going bit by bit. ❤️❤️

That tool is on backorder right now and I’m so sad!! Side question: can I use a layer cake instead of a jelly roll? I have some that would work great but am unsure if it would be essentially the same thing. I understand it would be more work (cutting, and way more sewing of strips…)
Don't worry, I will be ordering more of the tool the MOMENT they arrive here in Australia!! Hmmm... using a layer cake will have a lot more seams in there... and as I sew my strips together on the diagonal, you will lose a bit of fabric on the layer cake strips..... so yes, it will be a LOT more work and effort. But give it a go on a smaller project perhaps a placemat or table topper size before you commit to using the beautiful layer cake you have? And I think you will need more than one layer cake to get it a decent size.... the seams will use up a bit of fabric so it wouldn't be as large as a jelly roll one. And don't forget you can always cut from yardage too!
You can do a layer cake rug. Sew your 10" squares in the order you choose, end to end, finger press open to help stop the bulk. From your 10" square strip sets, I do 7 in a row making 6 strip sets of 7 squares. Hope this is going to make sense... I subcut the 10" square strips into 2½" strips, (each 10" strip set of 7 makes 4 subcut 2½" strip sets). Sew the first cut 2½" strips from each long 10" square strips, (there's (6) sets of 7). Sew these first cut 2½" strip sets from each section end to end using one of every fabric. Repeat for the next 3 sets. Now you'll have 4 strip sets of all fabrics 2½" wide. These will be long just using one strip at a time. I start my rug, WITHOUT attaching all 4 strip sets end to end, using the batting and fabric making my bias like strip that makes the rug. This makes it easier to handle using 1 strip set at a time. Less tangling and easier to manage. When I get close to the end of the first fabric strip I cut my thread. DON'T CUT THE BATTING at this point. Add the next fabric strip to the previous. Go back a few stitches from fabric and batting previously sewn and restart your bias like strip. Continue to the end. Start your rug from one end, if making your rug circular start rolling the start flat about 3 rows around. Sew an X in the center and without cutting your thread, wherever the X ends, take it to one edge and start going around as shown in this video. If you want oblong about 12" from the start, turn the bias like strip back on itself making sure there's no gap at the beginning of the second row and sew zigzag to the end. Work gently around the end forming your oblong. Don't make it too tight or it will curl up. Continuing like this video shows. Use a variegated thread, (that I never seen to use), lol, for a pop of pizzazz. Hope this makes sense. Makes a nice complimentary scrap rug. Can use one of the 4 strip sets for hot pads, totes or for whatever you choose. Connect where needed for length same as above. Options are endless. Stay safe... Babs near Tombstone AZ

A jelly roll is what the roll of fabric is called (2.5" strips by the width of fabric which is about 44") and in a jelly roll there are 40 strips all rolled up. Moda Fabrics trademarked the term Jelly Roll (they have other fabric precuts called Candy, Honeybuns etc so you can see a theme!). And yes, they are washable! It is all cotton fabric and the batting inside is cotton as well. So they wash and dry well. Need an iron once dry to get them flat again, but oh so much fun to make!

I'd tape both to the table and thent sew. I use binders all the time..there is no need to keep pulling them.

If you sew on a vintage singer, you probably already have this attachment. I have a 201-2 with a bias attachment that does this

A jelly roll is what the roll of fabric is called (2.5" strips by the width of fabric which is about 44") and in a jelly roll there are 40 strips all rolled up. Moda Fabrics trademarked the term Jelly Roll (they have other fabric precuts called Candy, Honeybuns etc so you can see a theme!).
And yes, they are washable! It is all cotton fabric and the batting inside is cotton as well. So they wash and dry well. Need an iron once dry to get them flat again, but oh so much fun to make!

Because it is not my pattern! Romaquilts on ETSY sells the pattern and has lots of great tips on how to start the middle of the jelly roll quilts as well as patterns for different size and shape jelly roll quilts!

It is the name of a pattern to make a rug out of a jelly roll (these are precut fabric 2.5” wide across the fabric with 40 strips in each roll). They make great rugs for your bedroom or craft space! ❤
